High school football roundup for Sept. 13, 2024: Sa’Nir Brooks helps carry No. 1 Aliquippa past No. 5 Mars

Sa’Nir Brooks ran for three touchdowns and Class 4A top-ranked Aliquippa took control in the second half to earn a 49-17 victory over No. 5 Mars (1-3) in a nonconference football game Friday night at Heinz Field.

Aliquippa outscored Mars, 34-6, in the second half.

Arison Walker and Qa’lil Good caught touchdowns passes from Marques Council Jr. for the Quips (2-0).

Ayden Yocum scored on a fumble recovery, and Eric Kasperowicz Jr. scored on an 8-yard run for Mars.

Here’s some highlights from other games across Western Pennsylvania:

Class 6A

Central Catholic 59, Mt. Lebanon 7 — Jy’Aire Walls and Elijah Faulkner ran for two touchdowns each as No. 2 Central Catholic (2-2, 1-0) defeated Mt. Lebanon (0-4, 0-1) in Class 6A.

North Allegheny 42, Hempfield 14 — In Class 6A, Luke Rohan ran for three second-half touchdowns as top-ranked North Allegheny (4-0, 1-0) defeated No. 4 Hempfield (1-3, 0-1). The game was tied at 14 at halftime. Rogan Katchur scored on a 4-yard run, and Aidan Allison caught a 6-yard TD pass from Dominic Detruf for Hempfield.

Class 5A

Penn Hills 54, Fox Chapel 0 — Jay’mere Ellis threw for 158 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 102 yards and one TD to lead Penn Hills (1-3, 1-0) over Fox Chapel (1-2, 0-1) in Northeast Conference play. Naytel Mitchell added 106 rushing yards and one touchdown.

Plum 24, Shaler 7 — Nick Odom ran for 120 yards and two touchdowns as Plum (1-3, 1-0) beat Shaler (2-2, 0-1) in the Northeast Conference. John Nonnenberg added 120 passing yards in the win.

Class 3A

Imani Christian 46, Valley 0 — Steve Vandiver threw for 124 yards and four touchdowns, including two each to Robert Torres-Johnson and Markus Williams, as top-ranked Imani Christian (4-0, 1-0) blanked Valley (0-4, 0-1) in an Allegheny 7 Conference game. Imani Christian led at halftime, 40-0.

Beaver 49, Hopewell 17 — Travis Clear tossed for 125 yards and three touchdowns to lead Beaver (3-1, 1-0) to the Western Hills Conference win against Hopewell (2-2, 0-1).

Central Valley 49, McGuffey 0 — Braddock Ambrose tossed for 224 yards and five touchdowns as No. 4 Central Valley (1-3, 1-0) downed McGuffey (0-3, 0-1) in the Western Hills Conference. Mason Dixon rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns and caught two passes — both for touchdowns — for 73 yards.

North Catholic 38, Quaker Valley 0 — In the Western Hills Conference, Joey Felitsky threw for 285 yards and two touchdowns — both to Ryker Kennedy — for 285 yards as North Catholic (2-2, 1-0) shut out Quaker Valley (0-3, 0-1). Kennedy caught five passes for 155 yards while teammate Logan Schade ran for 103 yards and two touchdowns.

Class 2A

Ligonier Valley 40, Shady Side Academy 28 – Ligonier Valley (2-2, 1-0) opened Class 2A Allegheny Conference play with a victory over Shady Side Academy (1-3, 0-1) at Weller Field.

South Allegheny 23, OLSH 7 — In Allegheny Conference play, Ryan Cortes threw for 134 yards and two touchdowns as South Allegheny (4-0, 1-0) beat OLSH (1-2, 0-1) to move to 4-0 for the first time since 1977.

South Park 7, Steel Valley 0 — Robert Lenzi scored the game’s only touchdown on a 1-yard run with 57 seconds left in the fourth quarter as No. 3 South Park (3-1, 1-0) beat No. 4 Steel Valley (1-3, 0-1) in an Allegheny Conference matchup. Eric Doerue ran for 160 yards for South Park, which controlled the ball for 34 minutes.

Keystone Oaks 24, Sto-Rox 8 — Billy Bricker ran for 142 yards and three touchdowns to lead Keystone Oaks (1-2, 1-0) to the Century Conference win against Sto-Rox (0-3, 0-1).

Seton LaSalle 48, Charleroi 8 — Michael Pastirik threw for 229 yards and six touchdowns to lead top-ranked Seton LaSalle (4-0, 1-0) over Charleroi (0-4, 0-1) in Century Conference play. Khalil Taylor caught three passes for 101 yards and a 60-yard scoring pass while Richard Littlejohn added three receptions for 48 yards and two touchdowns.

Waynesburg Central 21, Washington 13 — Jacob Stephenson ran for two touchdowns and threw for another to lead Waynesburg Central (3-1, 1-0) over Washington (2-2, 0-1) in Century Conference play.

Ellwood City 41, Mohawk 34 — Elijah Palmer-McCane ran for 146 yards and four touchdowns to lead No. 2 Ellwood City (3-0, 1-0) past Mohawk (1-2, 0-1) in the Midwestern Athletic Conference. Chris Smiley threw for 206 yards and two touchdowns for Ellwood City. Bobby Fadden tossed for 172 yards and two TDs for Mohawk.

New Brighton 32, Freedom 24 — Jaron King threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns to lead New Brighton (3-1, 1-0) to the Midwestern Athletic Conference win against Freedom (1-1, 0-1). Michael Veon caught seven passes for 107 yards and a touchdown for New Brighton. Freedom’s Kaden Bailey rushed for 161 yards and a touchdown and scored on a 52-yard punt return.

Riverside 21, Union 6 — Robert Janis ran for 137 yards and a touchdown as Riverside (2-2, 1-0) scored 18 points in the fourth quarter in its Midwestern Athletic Conference win against Union (0-3, 0-1). Riverside’s Aidan Gaydoz threw for 119 yards and a touchdown to Zack Hare, who caught four passes for 116 yards. Lucas Stanley threw for 118 yards and ran for Union’s only touchdown.

Class A

Neshannock 21, Rochester 0 — Jino Mozzocio tossed for 140 yards and a touchdown as Class A No. 5 Neshannock (3-1, 1-0) shut out Rochester 0-3, 0-1).

Shenango 25, Northgate 20 — Sam Patton ran for 196 yards and three touchdowns to lead Shenango (1-1, 1-0) to the Big 7 Conference win at Northgate (2-2, 0-1). Darius Fields rushed for 124 yards and a touchdown for Northgate.

South Side 42, Summit Academy 14 — Slayton Williams and Amare Morman each scored two touchdowns as No. 3 South Side (3-0, 1-0) defeated Summit Academy (1-2, 0-1).

Cornell 42, Burgettstown 0 — Mark Stuckey threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns as Cornell (4-0, 1-0) blanked Burgettstown (1-2, 0-1) in the Black Hills Conference. Khylil Johnson caught three passes for 87 yards and a touchdown, ran for 68 yards and one TD and returned a punt 85 yards for another score for the Raiders while teammate Walter Clarit added 115 yards and one touchdown.

Fort Cherry 42, Chartiers-Houston 6 — Matt Sieg ran for 225 yards and four touchdowns to lead top-ranked Fort Cherry (4-0, 1-0) over Chartiers-Houston (2-2, 0-1) in the Black Hills Conference.

Brentwood 48, Springdale 6 — Colton Rosing threw for 222 yards and three touchdowns to lead Brentwood (2-2, 1-0) to the Eastern Conference win at Springdale (0-3, 0-1). Forrest Betz caught two passes — both for touchdowns — for 129 yards. Nathan Gebauer scored on a 13-yard run for Springdale.

Jeannette 43, Frazier 24 — Kymon’e Brown threw three touchdown passes and Jayce Powell scored twice as Jeannette (4-0, 1-0) beat Frazier (1-3, 0-1) in the Class A Eastern Conference. Brown threw touchdown passes of 70 yards to Noah Sunder, 32 yards to Powell and 19 yards to Xavier Odorisio-Farrow. Powell also scored on a 64-yard punt return. The Jayhawks got touchdown runs of 52 yards from Nick Mendoza and 60 yards from Markus McGowan. Brady Secrist threw for 109 yards and a TD and ran for a score for Frazier.

California 72, Bentworth 14 — Lee Qualk scored five touchdowns as California (2-2, 1-0) scored 58 first-half points in its Tri-County South win at Bentworth (2-2, 0-1).

Carmichaels 18, Beth-Center 0 — In the Tri-County South, Will Murray and Robbie Wilson-Jones ran for touchdowns and Cannon Bupka threw to Brandon Yekel for another as Carmichaels (2-0, 1-0) shut out Beth-Center (0-3, 0-1).

Jefferson-Morgan 62, Mapletown 14 — Houston Guseman threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more as Jefferson-Morgan (4-0, 1-0) downed Mapletown (1-3, 0-1) in Tri-County South play.

West Greene 23, Avella 12 — West Greene (1-3, 1-0) beat Avella (1-3, 0-1) in a Tri-County South game.

Nonconference

Ambridge 28, Mt. Pleasant 10 – Ambridge moved to 2-2 overall with a nonconference victory over visiting Mt. Pleasant (2-2). The loss snapped a two-game winning streak for the Vikings.

Bethel Park 62, West Mifflin 14 — Tanner Pfeuffer threw for 250 yards and five touchdowns as Class 5A No. 4 Bethel Park (4-0) defeated Class 4A West Mifflin (2-1). Ja Vaughn Moore added 173 rushing yards and two touchdowns for Bethel Park and teammate Mitch Paschi caught five passes for 119 yards and two TDs.

Bishop Canevin 48, Laurel 23 — In nonconference play, Kole Olszewski threw for 293 yards and three touchdowns to lead Bishop Canevin (2-1) to victory at Laurel (0-4). Myontae Mott ran for 184 yards and two touchdowns, caught a TD pass and returned a kickoff 92 yards for another touchdown for Bishop Canevin.

Canon-McMillan 45, Armstrong 35 — Class 6A Canon-McMillan (1-3) took to the road to beat Class 5A Armstrong (2-2). Jaydon Oliver threw for 296 yards and four touchdowns, and Kyan Kline added eight catches for 212 yards for Armstrong.

Carlynton 42, Apollo-Ridge 14 — Devonte Dean threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 173 yards and one TD to lead Carlynton (3-1) to the nonconference win against Apollo-Ridge (0-3). Mark Jameson caught three passes for 111 yards and two touchdowns for Carlynton while teammate Damien Holloway added four receptions for 106 yards. Avery Grant scored on two touchdown runs for Apollo-Ridge.

Chartiers Valley 21, Baldwin 13 — Tayshaun Lewis rushed for 165 yards and two touchdowns as Class 4A Chartiers Valley (2-1) defeated Class 5A Baldwin (0-4).

Connellsville 19, Berlin-Brothersvalley 7 — Jayden Mickens ran for 187 yards and two touchdowns as Connellsville (1-3) beat Berlin-Brothersvalley (2-2) in nonconference play.

Derry 32, Burrell 13 — Damauri Robinson and Justin Papuga ran for two touchdowns each as Derry (2-2) beat Burrell (0-4) in nonconference play. Papuga finished with 97 rushing yards. Trey Coury rushed for 153 yards and a touchdown for Burrell.

Greensburg Salem 7, Ringgold 0 — Brody Chismar’s 18-yard scoring pass to Max Topper in the third quarter accounted for the game’s only touchdown as Class 3A Greensburg Salem (4-0) shut out Class 4A Ringgold (1-3) in a nonconference game.

Hollidaysburg 24, Butler 0 — Mitchell Baronner ran for two touchdowns as Hollidaysburg (4-0) defeated Butler (2-2) in nonconference play. Preston Simko ran for 92 yards for Butler.

Laurel Highlands 10, Indiana 7 — Laurel Highlands (2-1) beat Indiana (1-3) in a nonconference matchup.

New Castle 27, Yough 7 — Kyrell Harris scored on touchdown runs of 22 and 94 yards as Class 4A New Castle (3-0) defeated Class 3A Yough (2-2). Chase Lemmon also returned a punt 44 yards for a Red Hurricanes touchdown. Raidon Kuroda scored on a 3-yard run for Yough.

Northern Garrett (Md.) 31, Albert Gallatin 21 — Liam Stewart ran for two touchdowns as Northern Garrett (Md.) defeated Albert Gallatin (2-2) in a nonconference game. Tee Guseman scored two rushing touchdowns for Albert Gallatin.

Peters Township 35, Trinity 6 — Nolan DiLucia threw for 234 yards and two touchdowns and ran for a TD as Class 5A No. 1 Peters Township (4-0) beat Class 4A Trinity (1-3).

South Fayette 38, Elizabeth Forward 19 — Drew Welhorsky threw for 279 yards and five touchdowns to lead Class 5A South Fayette (4-0) to the win at Class 3A No. 5 Elizabeth Forward (1-3). Ryan Messina threw for 180 yards and three touchdowns for Elizabeth Forward.

Thomas Jefferson 44, Avonworth 7 — The Jaguars (4-0) used a big-play offense to rout Avonworth (1-2) in nonconference action. Thomas Jefferson scored on an 85-yard pass from Luke Kosko to Brayden White, a 45-yard Tyler Eber run and a 78-yard run by Elias Phiri. Kosko also threw a pair of touchdown passes to Kane Eggerton and Eber scored on a 4-yard run. Carson Bellinger scored on a 78-yard run for the Antelopes.

Upper St. Clair 62, Hampton 7 — Dante Coury ran for 154 yards and two touchdowns and John Banbury contributed 119 rushing yards and two TDs as Class 5A No. 3 Upper St. Clair (4-0) beat Class 4A Hampton (1-3). Ethan Hellmann threw for 131 yards and two touchdowns for Upper St. Clair, which led at the half, 49-7.

City League

Allderdice 21, Uniontown 15 — In nonconference play, Allderdice (3-1) won on the road at Uniontown (2-2).

Carrick 36, Brashear 2 — Carrick (1-3) downed Brashear (0-4) in a nonconference game.

Steubenville (Ohio) 38, University Prep 8 — In a nonconference game, Steubenville (Ohio) (4-0) defeated University Prep (0-3).
