High school roundup for April 10, 2025: Norwin evens up section series with Canon-McMillan

Trevor Vitsas went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Jake Knight drove in two runs to lead Norwin to a 4-3 victory over Canon-McMillan on Thursday night, evening their three-game Section 2-6A baseball series at a game apiece.

Winning pitcher Brayden Wardzinski gave up six hits in six innings and struck out four. Jayden Marcius pitched a scoreless seventh to pick up the save for the Knights (4-6, 2-3). Massimo Falconi drove in two runs for the Big Macs (8-2, 4-1).

Freedom 13, Sewickley Academy 11 – Elias Boyd tied the game with a two-run single and Zach Kuntz took a bases-loaded walk to force in the go-ahead run as Freedom (6-4) won a nonsection game. Boden Hilliard singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Kuntz finished with three RBIs. Winning pitcher Jonny Davis threw four scoreless innings of relief. Jacob Stanislaw doubled twice and drove in two runs and Charlie Scally had two hits and three RBIs for Sewickley Academy (1-7).

North Hills 3, Central Catholic 1 – Austin Ellis gave up one run on four hits in 6⅔ innings and helped his own cause with a double and an RBI to lead North Hills (4-7, 2-4) to a Section 1-6A victory. Cooper Ravenstahl had two hits and Gabriel Negri got the final out via strikeout to earn the save for North Hills. CJ Proch singled and drove in a run for Central Catholic (4-4, 2-4). Hard-luck loser Liam Pekarsky gave up two unearned runs on four hits in 3⅔ innings.

Washington 5, Jeannette 4 – Caleb Patton went 3 for 4 with a double and an RBI and winning pitcher Zander Henderson threw two scoreless innings of relief as Washington (3-9) rallied past Jeannette (2-6) in nonsection play. Tyler Bainer had a single and two RBIs for the Prexies. Amari Thomas doubled and drove in a run and Noah Sunder also had a hit and an RBI for the Jayhawks. Hard-luck losing pitcher Evan Yargeau gave up three earned runs and struck out seven in six innings.

Western Beaver 7, Aquinas Academy 3 – August Licthner and Christian Stefankis each doubled and drove in a run to lead Western Beaver (6-3, 5-2) to a Section 2-A win. Vinny Ross singled and doubled, Sawyer Chaffee had two hits and two RBIs and winning pitcher Brendon Fortner allowed no earned runs and fanned nine in 5⅔ innings. David Zaharko had two hits and Jonah Burchill drove in two runs for Aquinas Academy (2-6, 2-5).

Softball

Baldwin 15, Peters Township 0 – Camryn Temme hit a grand slam and combined with Melina Defelice on a three-inning no-hitter as Baldwin (8-1, 4-0) defeated Peters Township (2-8, 0-6) in Section 4-5A. Ryley Shaw doubled and Avery Herrington drove in three runs for the Highlanders.

Boys lacrosse

Franklin Regional 8, Latrobe 4 – Cole Stackiewicz had a hat trick and Matthew Kukura, Roman Vollero, Jameson Rusiewicz, Nicholas Sachs and Heath Silva also scored to lead Franklin Regional to a Section 1-2A win. Caden Mikulsky, Kyle McNeil, Jaxson Kettering and Brock Polinsky scored for Latrobe.

Girls lacrosse

Seton LaSalle 14, Franklin Regional 12 – Megan Kelley had eight goals and an assist and Lizzie Dorley added five goals and five assists to lead Seton LaSalle to a Section 1-2A victory. Taylor Murphy scored five goals for Franklin Regional.

Boys volleyball

Canon-McMillan 3, Upper St. Clair 1 – Landon Patterson had 12 kills and Justin Peters collected 10 kills, 21 assists and eight aces to power Canon-McMillan to a Section 1-3A victory. Henry Klinar added 10 kills, Aydin Winkelblech doled out 10 assists and Jack Steele had four blocks for the Big Macs.

Montour 3, Trinity 1 – Dylan Huff had 12 kills and Ben Slifkey dished out 37 assists to lead Montour to a Section 4-2A win. Gaige Schoff added nine kills and Wyatt Bucek collected eight kills and four blocks for the Spartans.
