High school roundup for April 11, 2018: Big inning leads Hempfield past Penn-Trafford

Hempfield picked the perfect time for a big inning in its section opener Wednesday afternoon.
Trailing by two runs, the Spartans scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning and defeated Penn-Trafford, 7-3, in a Section 2-6A baseball game.
Reed Hipps was 3 for 3 with an RBI.
Isaiah DiAndreth went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, and Tyler Wiederstein was 2 for 2 with an RBI for the Spartans (4-1, 1-0).
Norwin 5, Plum 3 — Nick Zona had three RBIs and Jayden Walker earned the victory as No. 4 Norwin (2-1, 1-0) won a Section 2-6A game. The Knights scored four runs in the second inning. Tanner Froelich had three hits, including two doubles, for Plum (5-2, 1-1).
Fox Chapel 10, Obama Academy 0 (5 inn.) — Reed Bursic struck out five and walked a two as Fox Chapel (2-1, 1-0) picked up the Section 1-5A win over Obama Academy (0-2, 0-2).
Franklin Regional 2, Thomas Jefferson 1 — Conner Helm was 3 for 3 with an RBI, and Palmer Jackson struck out five over 6 1⁄3 innings to help Franklin Regional (4-2, 2-1) to a Section 3-5A win.
Latrobe 12, McKeesport 0 (5 inn.) — Connor Mondock was 3 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs to help No. 5 Latrobe (3-2, 2-1) to a Section 3-5A win.
Derry 16, Yough 6 (6 inn.) — Isaac Buterbaugh knocked in four runs, Conner Watt was 3 for 5 with an RBI, and Anthony Oshie was 2 for 4 with three RBIs to guide Derry (1-3, 1-2) to a Section 1-4A win.
Aidan Bushey was 2 for 2 with two RBIs for the Trojans.
Dom Koch was 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Scott Houseman knocked in two runs for Yough (1-1, 1-1).
Highlands 12, Indiana 8 — Zac Kuniak doubled, tripled and knocked in four runs as Highlands rolled past Section 1-4A rival Indiana (0-1, 0-1). The Rams never trailed, jumping out to an 8-4 lead after two innings. Kuniak came on in the fourth inning to earn the win for Highlands (1-2, 1-2).
Knoch 8, Greensburg Salem 5 — Ethan Sloane had two doubles and three RBIs, and Andy Pipes was 4 for 5 as Knoch (3-0, 2-0) won in Section 1-4A. Jack Oberdorf had two doubles and two RBIs for Greensburg Salem (0-3, 0-2).
Blackhawk 7, Hopewell 5 — Andrew Cope doubled and had three RBIs, as No. 1 Blackhawk (5-0, 4-0) won in Section 2-4A.
South Park 9, Elizabeth Forward 1 — Tyler Bywalski was 3 for 3 and Seth Jones was 3 for 4 with two doubles to lead No. 2 South Park (6-2, 1-1) to a Section 3-4A win. Kevin Vaupel doubled and homered for the Eagles.
Burrell 9, East Allegheny 1 — Marshall McKallip singled twice and had four RBIs as Burrell earned a Section 1-3A win. Jake Okapal had a double, and Luke Virag struck out 11 to earn the win for Burrell (3-0, 2-0). Austin Tirpak doubled and drove in one run for East Allegheny (0-3, 0-2).
Valley 5, Steel Valley 4 — Andrew Serakowski hit a double down the right-field line to score the eventual game-tying and game-winning runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to lift Valley to a Section 1-3A win.
The section loss was the first for the Ironmen (2-3, 1-1) in two seasons.
Sean Demharter picked up the win for the Vikings (4-2, 2-0). He gave up four hits and struck out seven.
Jake McNabb had three hits for Valley, which collected six hits and overcame six errors on defense.
Avonworth 7, Ellwood City 5 — Jax Miller was 3 for 5 with a triple and two RBIs and winning pitcher Ryan Feller was 2 for 3 with two RBIs as No. 3 Avonworth (5-0, 4-0) won in Section 2-3A.
Seton LaSalle 3, Mt. Pleasant 1 (10 inn.) — Michael Bigley knocked in two runs in the top of the 10th inning to give Seton LaSalle (3-4, 1-2) a Section 3-3A victory. Joe Shrum doubled for Mt. Pleasant (0-2, 0-2).
Fort Cherry 10, Beth-Center 8 — Hunter Terpach was 3 for 3 with a double and five RBIs as Fort Cherry (3-0, 3-0) won in Section 1-2A.
Apollo-Ridge 10, Northgate 3 — Daniel Rametta doubled and drove in two runs, and TJ Stiffy knocked in three to help lead Apollo-Ridge (1-1, 1-1) get past Section 3-2A rival Northgate (0-2, 0-2). Vikings' pitcher Daniel Johnson pitched a complete game, striking out eight batters.
Carlynton 6, Riverview 1 — Carlynton (4-1, 3-1) jumped out to a 6-0 lead after the first two innings as Riverview (1-3, 0-3) fell to the Cougars in a Section 3-2A matchup. Ben Blacksmith doubled for the Raiders.
Serra Catholic 20, Sto-Rox 0 (3 inn.) — Zach Brown threw a no-hitter with six strikeouts and also went 4 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs as No. 1 Serra Catholic (8-0, 4-0) won in Section 3-2A. Mark Black and Patrick Brennan also were 3 for 3.
Eden Christian Academy 3, Leechburg 2 — Mark Williams hit a walk-off single to give Eden Christian a Section 1-A win. Dylan Kingan picked up the win for Eden (1-1, 1-0). Corey Korecz and Mario Leonard each had an RBI single for the Blue Devils (0-3, 0-1).
Vincentian Academy 14, Springdale 3 (5 inn.) — Kyler Fedko doubled twice, singled and drove in three runs as Vincentian Academy (3-0, 1-0) defeated Springdale in Section 1-A play. Dylan Hargenrader doubled and singled for Springdale (0-3, 0-1).
Greensburg Central Catholic 18, Geibel 1 (3 inn.) — Joel LoNigro threw a three-inning no-hitter with five strikeouts as No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic (3-1, 3-0) won in Section 2-A. Bryce Kurpiel was 3 for 3 with three RBIs, and Paul Rice was 2 for 4 with three RBIs.
Jeannette 16, Mapletown 4 (6 inn.) — Drake Petrillo knocked in three runs and Seth Howard hit a double for Jeannette (4-1, 2-1) in a Section 2-A win.
Jefferson-Morgan 17, West Greene 7 (5 inn.) — Jake Broadwater was 3 for 3 with five RBIs, and Zack Gamble was 3 for 3 with two doubles, a triple and three RBIs as No. 4 Jefferson-Morgan (3-1, 2-1) won in Section 2-A.
Quigley Catholic 1, Cornell 0 — Jonathan Jansma hit a walk-off single with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to give Quigley Catholic (2-1, 1-0) a Section 3-A win.

Mt. Lebanon 15, Brashear 0 (3 inn.) — Catie Rogan threw a three-inning no-hitter with two strikeouts as Mt. Lebanon (2-1, 2-1) won in Section 1-6A.
Latrobe 4, Fox Chapel 0 — Kiley Myers threw a two-hitter with 12 strikeouts as No. 2 Latrobe (5-0, 5-0) won in Section 2-6A. Makayla Munchinski was 3 for 4 for the Wildcats. Emma Humes took the loss for Fox Chapel (2-2, 1-2).
North Allegheny 3, Seneca Valley 1 — Ashley Adams threw a three-hitter with six strikeouts as No. 5 North Allegheny (3-2, 2-0) won in Section 3-6A.
Franklin Regional 5, Woodland Hills 3 — Mariah Deriggi had a double and two RBIs for Franklin Regional (5-1, 3-0) in a Section 1-5A victory. Kaitlyn Conard struck out 11 in the win.
Gateway 3, Greensburg Salem 2 — Danielle Taylor had two doubles, and Maura Ryan scattered five hits and struck out eight batters to lift Gateway (1-2, 1-2) to a Section 1-5A win.
Mattie White allowed eight hits with two strikeouts for Greensburg Salem (2-3, 1-2).
Penn-Trafford 5, Kiski Area 4 — Penn-Trafford scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure a Section 1-5A win. Emma Nedley was 2 for 2 with an RBI, and Allie Prady was 2 for 4 with two RBIs for the Warriors (4-0, 4-0).
Megan Andree struck out eight batters for Kiski Area (0-3, 0-3).
Plum 3, Armstrong 2 — The Mustangs (3-1, 2-1) rallied with two runs in the top of the seventh to score a Section 1-5A victory. Gabby Fischetti and Francesca Beighley each singled home runs for Plum in the decisive frame. Mackenzie Lake added an RBI single in the third. Abbey Froehlich struck out seven to pick up the victory. Hallie Hooks hit a home run for the River Hawks (0-3, 0-2).
Albert Gallatin 14, Ringgold 2 (5 inn.) — Ally Bezjak was 3 for 4 with two doubles and six RBIs, and Harlie Vance was 4 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs to lead No. 3 Albert Gallatin (4-0, 3-0) to a Section 2-5A win.
Connellsville 10, Laurel Highlands 0 (6 inn.) — Mia Burd threw a three-hitter with nine strikeouts as Connellsville (2-4, 2-3) won in Section 2-5A. Kylee Yothers and Jenna Hixson each had three hits.
Mt. Pleasant 12, Derry 1 (5 inn.) — Chloe Poulich was 2 for 4 with a double and home run as No. 1 Mt. Pleasant (3-0, 3-0) won a Section 1-4A game. Sydney Kanuch was 3 for 4 with a triple, and Meadow Uncapher threw a two-hitter with eight strikeouts.
Chelsea Bisi doubled for Derry (1-3, 0-2).
Uniontown 5, Highlands 3 — Lyndsey Glenn pitched a complete game and struck out four as Uniontown picked up a Section 1-4A win over Highlands. Lindsey Marschot doubled twice for Uniontown (2-4, 1-1). Rachel Blackburn doubled, singled twice and drove in one run, and Emily Cochran struck out 10 for Highlands (0-2, 0-2).
Yough 7, South Fayette 1 — Kierra Waywood tossed a three-hitter with 14 strikeouts as No. 2 Yough (6-1, 3-0) rolled to a Section 2-4A win. Nina Maroney was 3 for 3 with a double, and Kayley Westerman was 2 for 4 with two RBIs in the win.
Deer Lakes 15, East Allegheny 0 (4 innings) — Katelynn Blair hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs as Deer Lakes (2-1, 1-1) cruised to a Section 1-3A win. Casey Buechel added a solo home run, and Danielle Huffman had an RBI double. Marleen Meyer struck out eight and picked up the win.
South Allegheny 12, Valley 2 (6 inn.) — The game was tied 2-2 before South Allegheny (5-2, 1-1) put up 10 runs in the sixth inning in a Section 1-3A matchup. Madison Gatto and Andie Jo Conwell both went 2 for 3 for Valley (0-2, 0-1).
Southmoreland 12, McGuffey 2 (6 inn.) — Jess Matheny was 4 for 4 with three doubles and three RBIs to help Southmoreland (3-2, 3-1) to a Section 3-3A win. Emily Eutsey doubled, homered and had two RBIs in the win.
Apollo-Ridge 14, Northgate 7 — The Vikings (1-1, 1-0) collected 14 hits in a Section 2-2A victory. Kylee Wynn led Apollo-Ridge with four hits, Teresa Desimone added a pair of hits including a triple, and Mollie Charlton also tripled and picked up the victory. Maddy Abramowicz had two hits to lead the Flames (0-1, 0-1).
Laurel 7, Shenango 6 — Mackenzie Latness hit a walk-off single as Laurel (2-0, 2-0) won in Section 4-2A. Kayla Ruperto was 3 for 3 with two homers and five RBIs for Laurel.
Monessen 8, Jefferson-Morgan 0 — Dana Vatakis threw a one-hitter with 18 strikeouts as No. 2 Monessen (3-1, 2-1) won a Section 2-A game. She also went 3 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Mattie Telegraphis was 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and Sydney Caterino was 4 for 5.
Riverview 10, Bishop Canevin 7 — Carys Kenny-Howell knocked in two runs and Kelsey Phillips added three RBIs as Riverview (2-1, 2-1) downed Section 3-A rival Bishop Canevin (1-2, 1-2). Alyssa Cappa picked up the win, striking out six and walking four.
St. Joseph 17, Ellis 2 (3 inn.) — The Spartans broke the game open with an 11-run first inning, and Morgan Brown picked up the win over Section 3-A rival Ellis (0-3, 0-3). Anna Swierczewski and Ava Swanson both doubled and knocked in three runs for St. Joseph (3-0, 2-0).
Girls lacrosse
Latrobe 10, Norwin 9 — Raven Dupilka scored with 11.5 seconds left to give Latrobe (3-4-1, 3-3) a Section 2-AAA win. She had two goals. Ainsley Novotny had three for the Wildcats.
