High school roundup for April 12, 2025: Pine-Richland softball knocks off Seneca Valley

Maya Rippole hit a go-ahead two-run single in the bottom of the sixth to lead Pine-Richland to a 3-2 victory over Seneca Valley in Section 1-6A softball Saturday.
Winning pitcher Keelee Kalinoski allowed two runs on two hits and struck out six and Sydney Bezila doubled and drove in a run for the Rams (5-3, 4-3). Abby Kalkowski had two RBIs for the Raiders (7-1, 5-1). Hard-luck losing pitcher Lexie Hames gave up one earned run on three hits and struck out 19. She was intentionally walked four times.
Baldwin 5, Bethel Park 3 – Winning pitcher Cam Temme struck out nine, Jordan Gerendash singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Ryley Shaw had three hits and two runs scored for Baldwin (10-1, 6-0) in a Section 4-5A win. Sia Spano had two hits and three RBIs and Courtney Roberts singled and doubled for Bethel Park (6-3, 2-3).
Belle Vernon 6, Elizabeth Forward 4 – Taylor Beech had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs as Belle Vernon (5-5, 3-1) beat Elizabeth Forward (4-2, 2-1) in Section 2-4A. Kaylee Sypolt and Bella Williams added home runs for Belle Vernon. Julia Resnik homered and drove in three runs for Elizabeth Forward while Addy Nigut added a solo home run.
Deer Lakes 8, Yough 5 – In Section 1-3A, Siena Plummer belted two solo homers and scored three runs as Deer Lakes (4-6, 2-1) defeated Yough (2-4, 0-2). Laney Dineff added three hits and two RBIs. Shiann Kaefer had three hits and two RBIs for Yough.
Hampton 7, Beaver 5 – Eden Lawrence singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Alena Zottola also had two hits and two RBIs to lead Hampton (5-3, 4-0) to a Section 3-4A win. Marissa Snyder doubled twice and drove in a run, Cassie Vidic singled, doubled and knocked in a run and Teresa Fritsch had two singles, a double and an RBI for the Talbots. Bridget Mayo singled twice, doubled and drove in three runs, Rhiannon Rabassi also had three hits and Sami Springman went 2 for 3 with a homer for Beaver (6-3, 1-2).
Baseball
Central Valley 5, Beaver 4 – Jackson Christopher struck out four in five innings of relief as Central Valley (5-4, 2-1) defeated Beaver (7-3, 4-2) in 11 innings in the completion of a Section 1-4A game started Wednesday. Cameron Miller had three hits and one RBI in the win. Derek Hughes drove in three runs for Beaver, including one tying the game for Beaver in the top of the seventh.
DuBois Central Catholic 12, Bishop Canevin 2 – Winning pitcher Aiden Snowberger struck out 11 and went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs to lead DuBois Central Catholic to a nonsection win. Tyler Maddix singled and scored for Bishop Canevin (5-5).
Indiana 13, Derry 1 – In Section 3-4A, Mark Collinger went 3 for 4 and drove in five runs to lead Indiana (8-0, 3-0) past Derry (3-3, 2-1) in five innings. Tim Birch also went 3 for 4 while driving in four runs.
Kiski Area 13, Gateway 1 – Zach Hald hit a solo home run and Kiski Area (1-7) scored nine runs in the fourth inning on the way to beating Gateway (6-4) in a five-inning nonsection game. Austin Bachar added three RBIs.
New Castle 10, Laurel 0 – Paul Malley went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and two runs as New Castle (2-8) shut out Laurel (3-5) in a six-inning nonsection game. Dominic Miller, Phillip Laurenza and Parker Bailey added two RBIs each.
Norwin 3, Canon-McMillan 0 – Ethen Culbertson tossed a complete-game one-hitter, striking out four and walking one as Norwin (5-6, 3-3) beat Canon-McMillan (8-3, 4-2) in Section 2-6A. Jake Sincak drove in two of Norwin’s three first-inning runs.
Girls lacrosse
Canon-McMillan 10, Moon 8 – Abby Neugebauer scored three goals and Bella Urso added two as Canon-McMillan (6-6) beat Moon (7-2) in nonsection play.
Track and field
Chartiers-Houston Invitational – Carlynton’s Jordynn Carter won four individual golds at the annual event, winning the 100 and 200-meter dashes and the long jump and triple jump. Carlynton girls teammates Lani Blevins (3,200) and Clare Ruffing (300 hurdles) and the 400 relay team also took titles.
Emily Frankovich won the 1,600 and relay teams won the 1,600 and 3,200 to lead Fort Cherry to the girls team title.
Ella Fike (100 hurdles) and Ella Neil (high jump) took first for California. Other winners were Burgettstown’s Peyton Mermon (400), Trinity Christian’s Eilidh Edgar (800), Chartiers-Houston’s Brooklyn Havelka (discus), Burgsttstown’s Peyton Mermon (javelin) and West Greene’s Pieper Whipkey (shot put).
Jonah Pfender won the discus and shot put and Shane Cornali took first in the 400 as Fort Cherry also took the boys team title.
DeJuan Croumbles-Booker swept the 100 and 200 and Neighborhood Academy won the 400 relay. For Carlynton, Jermell Lindsay swept the hurdles and Ethan Moldovan won the 3,200.
California got first-place finishes from Carter Kent in the 800, Lee Qualk in the long jump, Andrew Typovsky in the javelin and the 1,600 relay team.
Other winners were Trinity Christian’s Caleb Schmidt in the 1,600, Keystone Oaks’ Carmen Pellarin in the high jump, Brentwood’s Daysaun Spencer in the triple jump and Beth-Center’s 3,200 relay.
TSTCA championships – Norwin swept the boys and girls team titles at West Mifflin.
For the boys, Ryan Schiller swept the hurdles events and the 1,600 relay team also took first place for the Knights.
Butler was second in the team race behind wins from Nicco Baggetta in the javelin, Brendan Eicher in the 3,200 and the 400 relay team.
Seneca Valley was fourth with champs Gavin Skarbek in the 400 and Dakari Payne in the high jump. Dino Nadarevic won the discus and shot put to lead Gateway to a sixth-place finish.
Other WPIAL winners were New Castle’s Kaevon Gardner in the 100, Elizabeth Forward’s Connor Stokes in the 200, Pine-Richland’s Ben McLean in the 800, Freeport’s Michael Braun in the 1,600 and the Mt. Lebanon 3,200 relay team.
On the girls side, Melani Schmidt won the 400 and Annie Czajkowski took the top spot in the 3,200 for Norwin.
Seneca Valley took second, led by champs Audrey Wolfe in the javelin and Jordan Monteleone in the high jump and the 1,600 relay team.
Upper St. Clair’s Sadie Tomczyk swept the sprints, winning the 100 and 200. Butler got first-place finishes from Julianna Lockwood in the discus and the 3,200 relay team. Daphne Fierl won the long jump and the 400 relay team also won for North Catholic.
Other WPIAL winners were South Fayette’s Delaney Schumaker in the 100 hurdles, Pine_Richland’s Abby Satina in the 300 hurdles, Winchester Thurston’s Alexis Bansah in the triple jump and Shaler’s Jayla Antomachi in the shot put.
Boys volleyball
Koller Classic – North Allegheny finished as runner-up in a tournament at Central York. The Tigers went 7-1 in pool play and defeated Northern York, Central York and Cedar Crest before falling to Cumberland Valley in the finals.
