High school roundup for April 18, 2025: Neshannock softball stands alone atop section

Addy Frye gave up two unearned runs and struck out 13 in a complete game and Payton Newman singled, doubled and drove in three runs to lead Neshannock to a 6-2 win over Laurel in a matchup of Section 1-2A softball rivals Friday.

Jaidon Nogay doubled and drove in two runs and Callie Biondi had a double and an RBI for the Lancers (12-0, 9-0). Ivy Pancher had two hits and an RBI for the Spartans (9-4, 6-2).

Indiana 4, Freeport 1 – Samantha Martin struck out 17 in a complete-game win and helped her own cause with a double and an RBI to lead Indiana (4-9, 3-3) to a Section 1-4A win. Kylee Cass went 2 for 2 with a homer and Addie Stossel doubled for Indiana. Lauren Clark doubled for Freeport (4-8, 1-6).

New Brighton 14, Freedom 0; New Brighton 24, Freedom 3 – New Brighton (4-6, 3-4) swept a Section 1-2A doubleheader with Freedom (0-12, 0-9). In the first game, Kylee Kwidis threw a five-inning three-hitter with 10 strikeouts and went 2 for 2 with a double and four RBIs for the Lions. Liza Lambert tripled twice. In the second game, Dixie Wall went 2 for 2 with a double and five RBIs, Kwidis singled, doubled and drove in four runs and Julia Boffo went 3 for 3 for New Brighton. Emily Lawrence tripled for the Bulldogs.

Valley View 14, Thomas Jefferson 3 – Winning pitcher Abbi Call went 4 for 4 with two home runs and four RBIs to lead Valley View (9-1) to a nonsection win. Allie Chalovich had two hits and two RBIs for Thomas Jefferson (6-4).

Chartiers-Houston 8, Yough 5 – Aaron Walsh singled, doubled, tripled and drove in four runs and Dominic Cumer had a double and an RBI to lead Chartiers-Houston (6-4) to a nonsection win. John Steban doubled and drove in a run and Hayden Eicher had two hits and an RBI for Yough (2-7).

New Castle 7, Moniteau 1 – Winning pitcher Joshua Pounds struck out nine in a complete game, Phillip Laurenza doubled and drove in two runs and Alex Rodgers had two hits and an RBI as New Castle (5-9) picked up a nonsection win.

Track and field

Slippery Rock Invitational – Laurel cleaned up Friday, winning seven individual golds. Tori Atkins and Kylie Ruperto finished 1-2 in the girls 100 and 200. Kylie Ruperto won the 400 and the Spartans took the 1,600 relay title. Alexis Sherry won the high jump and Sydney Tomczyk the pole vault. Alexis Geiwitz and Kevin Mahoney swept the shot put titles.

Allderdice won three individual and one relay gold. Eli Coffey won the 3,200 and Will Tew swept the 1,600 and 800. Jamera Green, Allahna Askew, Mikayla Sharif and GiGi Deakings won the girls 400 relay.

For Shenango, Sara Roe swept the long and triple jumps and Thomas Demko won both hurdles.

The Apollo-Ridge quartet of Mason Deyarmin, Kolson Grguric, Hayden Johns and Breydon Orvosh won the 3,200 and 1,600 relays.

New Castle got golds from the 400 relay, Kaevon Gardner in the 200 and Marquise Wise in the triple jump.

Other WPIAL winners were Keystone Oaks’ Carmen Pellarin in the high jump and Riverside’s Carson Emerick in the discus.
