High school roundup for April 19, 2018: Shaler baseball tops Pine-Richland on walk-off in 10th inning

Nick Rispoli hit an RBI double to score Colin Harger in the 10th inning and give Shaler a 1-0 win over No. 2 Pine-Richland in a Section 1-6A baseball game Wednesday afternoon.
Patrick Gumto allowed five hits and had nine strikeouts over eight scoreless innings, and Jake Bredl earned the win. Brian Colarusso was 2 for 4 with a double for Shaler (5-4, 3-1).
Matt Wood was 3 for 5 for Pine-Richland (6-3, 1-3).
Seneca Valley 4, Butler 1 — Cory Greiner threw a four-hit complete game, and Mark Trotta was 3 for 3 with two RBIs to lead Seneca Valley (5-4, 2-2) to a Section 1-6A win.
Hempfield 3, Connellsville 2 — Nick DiAndreth belted a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Hempfield a Section 2-6A victory.
He had two hits for the Spartans (7-2, 4-0). Tyler Dancu earned the win after four innings of two-hit relief.
Austin Petraglia took the loss for Connellsville (1-7, 1-3).
Bethel Park 2, Baldwin 1 — Ben Barnot's RBI single in the fifth inning helped Bethel Park (5-3, 5-1) earn a Section 3-6A win.
Canon-McMillan 2, Peters Township 0 — Brandon Kline and Ian Hess each knocked in runs as No. 5 Canon-McMillan (7-3, 4-2) earned a Section 3-6A win. Hess threw a five-hitter with nine strikeouts to earn the victory.
Joe Ehland was 2 for 3 for Peters Township (5-7, 2-4).
Armstrong 11, Kiski Area 6 — The River Hawks broke open a 4-4 game with three runs in the second inning en route to a Section 1-5A victory. Garret Polka went 2 for 4 to lead the Cavaliers (0-5, 0-4).
Greensburg Salem 2, Yough 0 — Matt Wicker hit a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning as Greensburg Salem (5-3, 4-2) won a Section 1-4A game. Andrew Rosenberg added a double and also threw a five-hitter with four strikeouts to earn the win.
Jarett Bach took the loss for Yough (2-4, 2-4).
Indiana 1, Derry 0 — Trajan Jones threw a three-hitter with 15 strikeouts as Indiana (1-4, 1-4) won in Section 1-4A. Conner Watt scattered seven hits and had eight strikeouts, and Zack Karaschak, Jordan Baum and Isaac Buterbaugh had hits for Derry (1-6, 1-5).
Blackhawk 11, Beaver 1 (6 inn.) — John Nixon was 2 for 2 with a double and four RBIs for No. 1 Blackhawk (8-0, 6-0) in a Section 2-4A win. Andy McClymonds threw a five-hitter with seven strikeouts to earn the win.
Hopewell 9, Central Valley 3 — Mitch Heranic hit a grand slam and Joey Rock also homered as Hopewell (5-6, 3-3) won in Section 2-4A.
South Fayette 9, Quaker Valley 4 — Joey Alcorn was 2 for 3 with an RBI and Eli Snider knocked in four runs as No. 4 South Fayette (5-1, 5-1) won in Section 2-4A.
West Mifflin 2, South Park 1 — Mike Rosol hit a walk-off single to lead West Mifflin (8-2, 5-1) to a Section 3-4A victory.
Mt. Pleasant 6, Southmoreland 5 (8 inn.) — Kyle Jones hit an RBI single in the top of the 10th to give Mt. Pleasant (2-3, 2-2) a Section 3-3A win. Asher O'Conner led off with a single and moved to third on a bunt and error. Jared Wagner was 3 for 4 with a double and also earned the win with an inning of relief.
Riverside 14, Freedom 4 — In Section 2-3A, Drew Speicher was 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and Danny Fox had a home run and five RBIs as No. 1 Riverside (6-1, 5-0) earned a victory.
Apollo-Ridge 4, Riverview 1 — The Vikings put up three runs in the first inning, and pitcher Daniel Johnson gave up two hits and struck out four in a Section 3-2A victory. Daniel Rametta singled, doubled and drove in a run, and Zach Hrea singled twice and knocked in two for Apollo-Ridge (3-1, 3-1).
Vincentian Academy 6, Eden Christian 0 — Stephen Turzai and Danny Morgan combined to throw a five-hitter with 12 strikeouts as No. 1 Vincentian Academy (5-1, 3-1) won in Section 1-A. Morgano had two RBIs.
Softball
Seneca Valley 9, North Hills 5 — Julia Ehrman and Karli Hacker each went 3 for 5 as Seneca Valley (5-3, 4-2) won in Section 3-6A.
Franklin Regional 13, Penn-Trafford 9 — Chrissy Kemerer homered twice and drove in six runs to power Franklin Regional (8-1, 6-0) past visiting Penn-Trafford (7-2, 5-1) in a Section 1-5A game, the Panthers' seventh consecutive victory.
Mariah Deriggi was 4 for 4 with three RBI and Abby Kane also had 3 RBI for Franklin Regional.
Emma Armstrong had three hits to lead Penn-Trafford, which entered the day on a three-game winning streak by outscoring its opponents 43-3.
Greensburg Salem 14, Armstrong 1 (5 inn.) — Nikki Mellinger was 4 for 4 with two doubles, two home runs, including a grand slam, and six RBIs, as Greensburg Salem (4-5, 3-4) won in Section 1-5A. The Golden Lions also defeated Armstrong, 8-3, in the second game of the doubleheader. Rena Caruso threw a five-hitter to earn the win.
Kiski Area 8, Woodland Hills 2 — The Cavaliers (3-3, 3-3) used a six-run fifth to stretch their winning streak to three games with the Section 1-5A triumph. Megan Andree earned the win, striking out 13 batters and giving up four hits. Courtney Moyer doubled, and Alayna Mintz homered.
Plum 5, Gateway 4 — Plum rallied with two runs in the bottom of the seventh to claim a Section 1-5A victory.
Sidney Young crossed home with the winning run on a wild pitch. Young went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs for Plum (5-3, 4-3).
Gateway (3-3, 3-3) had taken a 4-3 lead with two runs in the top of the seventh.
Plum's Melanie Mienke pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and striking out six.
Emma Kennedy went 3 for 4 with two home runs, a double and three RBIs to lead the Gators.
Belle Vernon 1, Keystone Oaks 0 — Bailey Parshall threw a three-hitter with 11 strikeouts as No. 4 Belle Vernon (6-2, 4-2) won in Section 2-4A.
Mekenzie Sokol had a double for the Leopards.
West Mifflin 7, South Fayette 2 — Annie Modrick and Jaden Arcuri each had three hits, and Arcuri added two RBIs as West Mifflin (6-4, 4-3) won in Section 2-4A.
Central Valley 15, Quaker Valley 4 (5 inn.) — Winning pitcher Tomasina Sciaretta was 3 for 4 with two RBIs to help Central Valley (5-1, 4-1) win in Section 3-4A.
Burrell 12, East Allegheny 0 (5 inn.) — Lea Coffman homered and had two RBIs as Burrell (4-2, 4-1) took Game 1 of a Section 1-3A doubleheader. Brittany Dunn had a two-run double and drove in three. She also picked up the win with seven strikeouts.
Burrell 14, East Allegheny 0 (5 inn.) — Gabby Britton singled and drove in two runs as the Bucs posted a shutout in Game 2 of a Section 1-3A doubleheader. Elizabeth Gural also singled and had two RBIs. Kelly Nitowski struck out four and picked up the win for Burrell (5-2, 5-1).
Seton LaSalle 4, Serra Catholic 2 — Lexi Wagner hit a two-run walk-off home run to give No. 3 Seton LaSalle (6-1, 4-0) a Section 1-2A win over No. 5 Serra Catholic (5-1, 4-1). Wagner also hit a solo home run.
Apollo-Ridge 10, Springdale 0 (5 inn.) — Mollie Charlton gave up one hit and struck out 11 as the Vikings cruised in a Section 2-2A matchup. Charlton doubled twice, and Adeline Baustert went 2 for 3 for Apollo-Ridge (3-2, 3-1).
Monessen 18, Avella 0 (3 inn.) — Dana Vatakis threw a three-inning no-hitter with eight strikeouts to guide No. 2 Monessen (6-1, 5-1) to a Section 2-A victory. Mattie Telegraphis was 3 for 3 with two home runs and seven RBIs.
Leechburg 8, Riverview 2 — The Raiders held a 2-0 lead going into the bottom of the third before the Class A No. 3 Blue Devils came back to post a Section 3 win.
Morgan Pierce earned the win for Leechburg (8-1, 7-0), giving up five hits and striking out five. Aubry Skeel singled three times and knocked in two runs, and Kristen Knapp singled, doubled and drove in a run. Despite striking out 11, Riverview pitcher Carys Kenny-Howell took the loss after giving up nine hits and walking four batters through 4 2⁄3 innings.
Chartiers-Houston 13, West Greene 11 — In nonsection play, Kasey Scears was 3 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs, and Ella Brookman hit at three-run homer as Class 2A No. 2 Chartiers-Houston (7-1) earned a win.
Madison Renner and Jade Renner homered for Class A No. 1 West Greene (7-2).
Central Martinsburg 7, Ligonier Valley 5 — Dylan Claycomb homered, had two doubles and was the winning pitcher as Central Martinsburg (3-3) won a nonconference game in District 6. Abi Cmar had two doubles for Ligonier Valley (6-1).
Boys tennis
Franklin Regional 5, Mt. Lebanon 0 — Freshmen Anup Nadesan, Shrey Ramesh and Advait Kulkarni all won singles matches to lift Franklin Regional to victory in the first round of the WPIAL Class AAA playoffs. Franklin Regional will play No. 1 Fox Chapel in the quarterfinals.
