High school roundup for April 22, 2019: Mars blanks No. 4 Shaler

Shane Fox tossed a three-hit shutout and knocked in the lone run of the game as Mars defeated No. 4-ranked Shaler, 1-0, in a Section 2-5A baseball game Monday afternoon.
Jon Wetherholt was 2 for 3 with a double and triple for the Fightin’ Planets (8-4, 3-2).
Hunter Boyan scattered seven hits and took the complete-game loss for Shaler (8-4, 3-2).
Laurel Highlands 15, Trinity 0 (4 inn.) — Andino Vecchiolla allowed one hit with five strikeouts over four innings to lead Laurel Highlands (8-2, 5-2) to a Section 3-5A. Santino Marra was 4 for 4 with two RBIs, and Tyler Becker had three hits and three RBIs.
Chartiers-Houston 13, Burgettstown 0 (5 inn.) — Dustin Weister allowed one hit and struck out eight in four innings to help No. 5 Chartiers-Houston (8-2, 6-0) win a Section 1-2A game. Weister also had two hits and three RBIs. Josh Colletti was 3 for 3 with two RBIs.
Fort Cherry 7, Brownsville 5 — Shane Smith was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Cal Miller had two RBIs as Fort Cherry (6-5, 3-3) won in Section 1-2A.
Vincentian Academy 15, St. Joseph 0 (5 inn.) — Danny Morgano threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts, as No. 1 Vincentian Academy (6-0, 5-0) won in Section 3-A. Jake Stotsky had three doubles and four RBIs for the Royals.
Freedom 7, South Side 6 — Paul Thompson hit a walk-off single to lead Freedom (6-6) to a nonsection win. Zach Rosa was 3 for 4 with a double, and Kevin Lawrence had two hits and an RBI for Freedom.
North Allegheny 14, Hampton 2 (5 inn.) — Ben Petschke and Will Mracna each knocked in four runs to help Class 6A No. 5 North Allegheny (8-5) win a nonsection game.
Serra Catholic 15, South Allegheny 1 (5 inn.) — Patrick Brennan was 2 for 3 with a double and five RBIs, and Mark Black had a double, home run and three RBIs, as No. 2 Serra Catholic (11-1) won in a nonsection game.
Softball
Quaker Valley 17, Rochester 2 (3 inn.) — Isabella DeGori doubled, tripled and had three RBIs to help Quaker Valley (5-4, 2-3) win in Section 3-4A. Winning pitcher Lily Eberlein added three RBIs, and Reese Hamm had two hits and two RBIs.
Serra Catholic 3, Riverview 0 — Serra Catholic’s Kaitlyn Conrad outlasted Riverview’s Alyssa Cappa in a Section 2-2A pitchers’ duel. Conrad pitched a three-hit shutout, striking out nine batters, for Serra (7-2, 7-1). Cappa allowed three runs on five hits and struck out 10 over six innings of work as Riverview (4-3, 3-3) saw its two-game winning streak end. Annie Betler had two of the Raiders’ three hits. Nina Grandey had two hits for the Eagles, who scored a run in the first inning and tacked on two more in the sixth.
Vincentian Academy 13, Shady Side Academy 1 — Sydney Calderaro hit two three-run home runs to lead No. 3 Vincentian Academy (8-0, 7-0) to a Section 2-2A win. Elizabeth Arnold threw a two-hitter with 11 strikeouts.
McGuffey 3, Bentworth 2 — Katie Seabright had two hits, and Clara Barr and Shelby Dobrzynski each had doubles as McGuffey (2-6, 2-5) won in Section 3-2A.
Freedom 23, Aliquippa 0 (3 inn.) — Tara Speicher tossed a no-hitter and also doubled in two runs for Freedom (11-3, 9-3) in a Section 4-2A win. Jenna Engle knocked in five runs, and Ella Jansen had four RBIs. Jordyn Simoni also threw a no-hitter as Freedom beat Aliquippa, 15-0, in three innings as part of the doubleheader. Madison Slowinski had two doubles and five RBIs, and Trisha Speicher was 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs.
Mapletown 12, Monessen 5 — Mekenzie Reda tripled in two runs to help Mapletown (7-1, 4-1) win a Section 2-A game. Hannah Yorty and Mattie Telegraphis had doubles for Monessen (1-7, 1-4). Yorty struck out 10 batters but took the loss.
