High school roundup for April 3, 2024: Carson Shuglie’s 6th-inning homer sparks Hempfield past Central Catholic

Carson Shuglie hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Hempfield the lead for good in a 6-4 victory over Central Catholic in Section 2-6A baseball Wednesday.
Quinn Wilkins doubled and collected two RBIs for the Spartans (6-0, 2-0). Landon Greene drove in a pair of runs for the Vikings (3-3, 0-2). Adam Hess got the win for Hempfield.
Ellwood City 5, Quaker Valley 3 – Ryan Widmaier doubled and knocked in two runs while Isaiah Lutz and Nathan Kennedy each drove in a run as Ellwood City (3-2, 1-2) defeated Quaker Valley (1-4, 0-3) in Section 1-3A. Todd Kagle doubled and drove in two runs for the Quakers. Will Nardone picked up the win and Owen Andrews got the save for the Wolverines.
Freeport 5, Deer Lakes 4 – Michael Hanz hit a game-tying two-run double, Ryan Claypool followed with a go-ahead RBI double, and Matt Corfield added an insurance run with an RBI double of his own as Freeport (1-3, 1-2) bested Deer Lakes (2-3, 0-3) in Section 3-3A. Ryan Cochran hit a solo home run for the Lancers.
Keystone Oaks 11, Steel Valley 3 – Winning pitcher Jake LaPorte tripled and drove in three runs and Vinny Kaplack doubled twice and finished with three RBIs as Keystone Oaks (1-3, 1-0) prevailed in a Section 2-3A matchup. Logan Thomas and Garrett Cherpak each collected two hits and an RBI for Steel Valley (1-3, 0-1).
Latrobe 10, Laurel Highlands 0 – Winning pitcher Riley Smith allowed one hit and struck out four in six innings as Latrobe (4-1, 1-0) blanked Laurel Highlands (0-4, 0-1) in Section 2-4A. Cooper Basciano tripled and collected a pair of RBIs, Luke Nipar-Smith tripled and drove in a run, and Jacob Cramer knocked in two runs for the Wildcats. Austin Wingard had the only hit for the Mustangs.
Mars 4, West Allegheny 3 – Jake Johnson smacked the go-ahead two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning as Mars (3-0, 1-0) picked up a Section 3-5A win over West Allegheny (2-1, 0-1). Johnson and Hayden Reisinger each doubled for the Fightin’ Planets. Will Gubba doubled and knocked in two runs for West A.
Mohawk 5, Neshannock 1 – Briar Crawford threw 4 ⅔ no-hit innings with 10 strikeouts and AJ Verdi drove in three runs for Mohawk (5-0, 4-0) in a Section 1-3A win. Jay Wrona singled and drove in a Run for the Warriors. Dom Cubellis tripled and scored for Neshannock (1-4, 0-2).
Mt. Lebanon 2, Canon-McMillan 1 – Sawyer Klasnick slashed a two-run triple and Jake Tinnemeyer also hit a triple as Mt. Lebanon (4-1, 1-0) edged out Canon-McMillan (0-3, 0-1) in Section 2-6A. Ben Peterson and Kolton Smittle each doubled for the Big Macs. Graham Keen struck out five in four innings for the Blue Devils.
North Catholic 5, Hampton 0 – Thomas Schafale threw a complete-game one-hit shutout and fanned 10 to lead North Catholic (1-1, 1-0) to a Section 4-4A win. Schafale also hit a two-run home run. Blake Primrose hit a solo home run and doubled for the Trojans. Sean Sullivan had the only hit for Hampton (2-1, 1-0).
Seneca Valley 11, Allderdice 1 – Winning pitcher Zach Tkatch struck out nine in five innings, Creed Erdos went 4 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, Nick Parrotto was 3 for 3 with a home run and drove in three runs as Seneca Valley (2-1, 1-0) defeated Allderdice (1-2, 0-1) in Section 1-6A. Zack Shook doubled for the Dragons.
Trinity 5, Connellsville 2 – Matthew Robaugh clubbed a two-run home run and Mekhi Bouman doubled and drove in a run to lead Trinity (2-1, 1-0) to a Section 2-5A win. Jonathan Kelly brought home two runs and Anthony Piasecki doubled for Connellsville (2-4, 0-1). J.R. Rieg got the win and Jackson Burt picked up the save for the Hillers.
West Mifflin 3, Elizabeth Forward 2 – Jacob Cannon hit a walk-off single in the eighth to lift West Mifflin (5-1, 1-0) over Elizabeth Forward (3-1, 0-1) in Section 3-4A. Zane Griffaton and Chase Maggio each drove in a run for the Titans. Jacob Peterson was 2 for 4 with an RBI and Kaden Faychak doubled and drove in a run for the Warriors.
Softball
Armstrong 6, Deer Lakes 1 – Madison Baker struck out 11 and allowed one unearned run in seven innings and Natalie Zeigler went 2 for 4 with three RBIs to lead Armstrong (3-0) past Deer Lakes (3-2) in nonsection play. Maddie Kee fanned 10 for the Lancers.
Burrell 13, Steel Valley 3 – Bella Stewart hit a pair of doubles and drove in two runs, Pyper Ferres smacked a two-run triple, and winning pitcher Shelby Novak also tripled as Burrell (2-2) 10-runned Steel Valley (1-3) in nonsection play.
Knoch 2, West Mifflin 0 – Winning pitcher Marlee Fraser allowed one walk and three hits while striking out 14 in a complete-game shutout to lead Knoch (3-2, 1-0) to a Section 1-4A win. Alena Tekely and Sylvia Luffy each doubled and drove in a run for the Knights. Kaleigh Tatters had a hit and a walk for West Mifflin (3-3, 0-1).
Boys lacrosse
Hempfield 7, Franklin Regional 5 – Luke Krebbs and Logan Hleman each scored a pair of goals, while Maddyn Bompiani, Colby Herron and Breckin Vilella scored a goal apiece to lead Hempfield (1-3) over Franklin Regional (2-2) in a nonsection match. Colel Vollero scored a hat trick and Logan Klein followed with two goals for the Panthers.
Girls lacrosse
Blackhawk 17, Ambridge 4 – Mia Piocquidio, Ryleigh McKnight and Andrea Kinger each recorded a hat trick while Ava Pagani, Lauren Fair, Sidney Ritz and Mara Armstrong scored two goals apiece as Blackhawk (5-0, 2-0) rolled to a Section 2-2A win over Ambridge (0-6, 0-3).
Moon 19, Quaker Valley 4 – Allyssa Anstis scored six goals, Seanna Rodriguez followed with five, Avery Machusko netted four, Reese Keslar added a pair and Marleigh Therrien and Gianna DeLuca each chipped in with one as Moon (5-0, 3-0) beat Quaker Valley (1-2, 1-1) in Section 2-2A.
Boys tennis
Section 4-3A – The top seeds advanced to Thursday’s section finals but not without a fight. No. 1 Devin Collier of Bethel Park defeated Avi Sharma of Peters Township, 3-6, 6-2, 5-1, when Sharma retired in the third set of one semifinal. No. 2 Ari Plutko of Upper St. Clair battled for a 0-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over teammate Ronan Gibbons in the other. The top four finishers make the WPIAL tournament in Class 3A.
Section 1-2A – Top seed Landon Harclerode of Valley lost a total of two games in two matches en route to the section singles finals. He will meet Aydan Gross of Mt. Pleasant in the finals Thursday. Harclerode beat Gabe Nettleton of Indiana in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-0. Gross got past Silas Morris of Greensburg Salem, 6-2, 7-5, to reach the finals. Nettleton and Morris will square off for third place Thursday. In Class 2A, the top three finishers make the WPIAL tournament.
Section 3-2A – Top seed Jack Gillespie of Aquinas Academy bested North Catholic’s Justin Kontul, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the section finals. He will take on North Catholic’s Justin Garvey in the finals. Garvey beat No. 2 seeded Vitaliy Pikalo of Hampton 6-4, 7-5 in the semifinals.
Section 4-2A – Top seed Severin Harmon of Sewickley Academy lost only one game en route to the section finals. He will go against teammate Finn Wentz on Thursday. Harmon beat No. 4 seeded Zack Masters of Beaver, 6-1, 6-0, in the semifinals. Wentz defeated No. 3 Ben Crefeld of Blackhawk, 6-2, 6-1, to make the finals.
Section 5-2A – Top seeded John Rohrkaste of Montour defeated No. 5 seed Nikou Nourbakhsh of Winchester Thurston, 6-2, 6-1, to advance to the section finals. He will take on Noubakhsh’s teammate, No. 3 seed Chris Zhu, in the finals. Zhu took down No. 2 Chase Merkel of Quaker Valley, 6-3, 6-4, in the semifinals.
