High school roundup for April 3, 2025: Quaker Valley slams rival Sewickley Academy

Winning pitcher Nolan Wagoner singled, doubled twice and drove in four runs and Todd Kagle hit a grand slam to lead Quaker Valley to a 13-2 win over rival Sewickley Academy in nonsection baseball Thursday.
Ryan Finamore and Oscar Roig each went 3 for 3 with a double for the Quakers (4-2). Jacob Stanislaw went 3 for 3 with a double for Sewickley Academy (0-5).
Avonworth 1, Hopewell 0 – Patrick Bykowski threw a complete-game one-hit shutout, striking out three and walking none, to send Avonworth (7-1) to a nonsection win. Carson Franc delivered an RBI single in the second inning for the game’s only run. Alexander Rowe went 2 for 2 for the Antelopes. Drew Donovan was the hard-luck loser for Hopewell (1-7), allowing one run on six hits. Charles Smetana had the Vikings’ lone hit.
Butler 4, North Hills 3 – Winning pitcher Kyle Casteel struck out 12 and walked none in six innings and Tanner Pry doubled and drove in a run to lead Butler (6-0, 3-0) to a Section 1-6A win. Liam Connelly and Austin Ellis doubled for North Hills (2-6, 0-3).
Canon-McMillan 17, Woodland Hills 1; Canon-McMillan 17, Woodland Hills 0 – Canon-McMillan (7-1, 3-0) swept Woodland Hills (2-4, 0-3) in a Section 2-6A doubleheader. In the first game, winning pitcher MJ Maruschak struck out 10, Alexander Shank went 2 for 2 with a double, triple and five RBIs and Nico Patragas went 2 for 2 with a home run. DeVaughn Earl-Hayden doubled and Joe Young singled and drove in a run for Woodland Hills. In the second game, Michael Stafford struck out five in three innings, Brayden Radue went 2 for 2 with a homer and six RBIs and Patragas went 2 for 2 with a double and four RBIs. Earl-Hayden doubled for the Wolverines.
Jeannette 14, Steel Valley 2 – Amari Thomas finished a double short of the cycle, going 4 for 4 with a triple, homer and four RBIs to lead Jeannette (2-3) to a nonsection win. Noah Rattigan had two hits and two RBIs and Noah Sunder, Zion Harper and Dominico Ponzetti each had two hits for the Jayhawks. Adam Keesecker doubled and scored for Steel Valley (1-4).
Knoch 10, Mars 4 – Sean Morgan went 2 for 3 with a three-run homer, Dante Pelloni knocked in three runs and Dave Breese plated two to lead Knoch (5-4) to a nonsection victory. Finn Seideneck doubled and drove in a run and Luke Goodworth also doubled for Mars (2-4).
McGuffey 10, Fort Cherry 9 – Lincoln Johnson hit a walk-off bases-clearing double in the bottom of the seventh to lift McGuffey (4-2) to a nonsection victory. Mason Piatt doubled and scored three runs for the Highlanders. Ryan Huey went 4 for 5 with two doubles for Fort Cherry (0-5).
Pine-Richland 5, Mt. Lebanon 0 – Noah Mackie and Logan Plummer combined on a two-hit shutout to lead Pine-Richland (6-1) to a nonsection win. Mackie struck out four and walked one in five innings. Plummer pitched two perfect innings with three strikeouts. Sam Heckert went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs and Anthony Annichine went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI for the Rams. Dane Barber and Cole Kappeler had base hits for Mt. Lebanon (1-6).
Seneca Valley 3, Central Catholic 1 – Luis Torrenegra threw a complete game, allowing one run on six hits with six strikeouts, to lead Seneca Valley (4-3, 2-1) to a Section 1-6A win. Danny Drennan and Micah Olayer singled and drove in a run for the Raiders. Chase Gelpi singled, walked and scored a run for Central Catholic (3-2, 1-2).
Softball
Chartiers-Houston 15, Fort Cherry 0 – Aubree Randolph hit a three-run homer and Zaylee Fonner went 3 for 3 with three RBIs to lead Chartiers-Houston (7-0, 1-0) to a Section 3-2A win. Sydney English and Seanna Riggle each doubled and drove in a run. Mariah Zombeck had a double for Fort Cherry (0-5, 0-1).
Shenango 11, Riverside 3 – Brianna Aluisa went 3 for 3 with a homer and three RBIs and Emma Herb and Zoe Offie each went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to power Shenango (3-3, 2-0) to a Section 1-2A win. Danny Rosenberger singled and doubled and Joci Cummings drove in two runs for Riverside (1-4, 1-1).
Boys tennis
Section 1-3A – Gateway dominated the section singles tournament with top seed Adam Memije defeating teammate Zidaan Hassan, the second seed, in the finals, 6-1, 6-1. Franklin Regional teammates Collin Stalnaker and Sanshiro Ogawa played for third place with Stalnaker winning, 6-2, 6-2. In the semifinals, Memije defeated Ogawa in straight sets and Hassan outdueled Stalnaker in three sets. The top four players in each section advance to the WPIAL tournament Tuesday and Wednesday.
Section 2-3A – In a matchup of last year’s WPIAL boys singles tennis champs, North Allegheny’s Advaita Sircar rolled past Sewickley Academy’s Severin Harmon, 6-0, 6-0, in the section singles final. Sircar is the reigning Class 3A champ. Harmon won at Class 2A last year before the Panthers bumped up in class this season. Pine-Richland’s Ryan Moore defeated North Allegheny’s Sri Thirumala in three sets in the third-place match.
Section 3-3A – Top seed Sai Chaudhry of Shady Side Academy won the section singles title, defeating teammate Robert Bartolacci in straight sets in the semifinals and winning the championship match when Baldwin’s Nikita Petruk retired. Petruk, the sixth seed, defeated second-seeded Rylan Barr of Thomas Jefferson in the semifinals.
Section 4-3A – Second-seeded Ari Plutko defeated fifth-seeded Shawn Khurna, 6-3, 6-4, in an all-Upper St. Clair final. Khurna knocked off top seed Luca Ritivoi of Mt. Lebanon in three sets in the semifinals. Plutko beat Devin Collier of Bethel Park in straight sets in the semis.
Section 1-2A – Valley’s Landon Harclerode defended his section singles title in dominant fashion, defeating Indiana’s Gabe Nettleton in the finals, 6-0, 6-2. Harclerode lost only five games in four matches in the tournament. In the semifinals, he defeated Mt. Pleasant’s Ayden Gross, 6-3, 6-0. In the other semifinal, Nettleton beat Greensburg Salem’s Silas Morris, 6-3, 6-2. In the third-place match, Gross defeated Morris, 7-5, 6-4.
Section 2-2A – For a school without a tennis team, Belle Vernon sure has its share of top-notch tennis players. On the heels of the success of two-time WPIAL girls singles champ Gabby Dusi, Leopards junior Max Henson, the top seed, won a section singles title, defeating Jonah Jasek of South Park, 6-0, 6-2, in the finals. Henson, a Cleveland State recruit, swept Jasek’s South Park teammate Steven Duing in the semifinals. Jasek made the finals by beating Montour’s John Rohrkaste in straight sets.
Section 3-2A – North Catholic’s Justin Garvey defeated Quaker Valley’s Will Meagher, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, in a three-set battle between the top two seeds for the section singles title. The finalists won their semifinal matches in straight sets with Garvey defeating Quaker Valley’s Tanner Schultz and Meagher downing North Catholic’s Alex Weber. Weber won the third-place match in straight sets.
Section 4-2A – It was a three-set battle between the top two seeds when No. 1 Ben Crefeld of Blackhawk defeated No. 2 Zack Masters of Beaver, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, for the section title. The third-place match also went three sets with Central Valley’s Hunter Hazelwood defeating Blackhawk’s Mike Lanigan.
Girls lacrosse
Allderdice 17, West Allegheny 1 – Chloe Crawford scored five goals and Angela Alacio, Addie Wilkinson, Mae Balog and Crosby Hanna added two goals apiece to lead Allderdice to a nonsection win.
Franklin Regional 14, Ellis School 3 – Ingrid Varley scored five goals, Taylor Murphy added three and Emerson Funari had two as Franklin Regional picked up a Section 1-2A win. Goalkeeper Kaitlyn Patts made her 400th career save.
Quaker Valley 14, Trinity 4 – Alexa Westwood had three goals and five assists to lead Quaker Valley to a nonsection win. Lucy Roig, Meredith Fallgren, Lily Millet and Anna Campbell each scored twice for the Quakers. Kennedy Tracey had two goals for Trinity.
Boys volleyball
Canon-McMillan 3, Peters Township 1 – Justin Peters collected 16 kills, 15 assists and four blocks to lead Canon-McMillan to a Section 1-3A win. Jack Steele had eight kills and three blocks, Landon Patterson finished with seven kills and nine digs and Aydin Winkelblech dished out 18 assists for the Big Macs.
Shaler 3, North Catholic 0 – Nate Myers had 14 kills and Adam Hoffman collected nine kills and four blocks to lead Shaler to a Section 2-2A win. Aiden Smith handed out 35 assists and Justin Truong recorded 16 digs.
