High school roundup for Aug. 23, 2025: Kemon Spell fills highlight reel in McKeesport win

Kemon Spell ran for 295 yards and four touchdowns after returning the opening kickoff 98 yards for a score to lead McKeesport to a 51-24 victory over Delaware Valley on Saturday at the KDKA Kickoff Classic at Wolvarena.
Spell, a Penn State recruit, scored on runs of 56, 80, 38 and 54 yards. Javien Robinson added three receptions for 88 yards for the Tigers (1-0). Colin McGarvey threw for 190 yards and a touchdown for Delaware Valley (0-1).

Elizabeth Forward 28, West Mifflin 14 – Ryan Messina was 8 of 12 passing for 111 yards and ran for 78 yards and three touchdowns as Elizabeth Forward (1-0) pulled away in the second half of a victory over West Mifflin (0-1) at the Wolvarena. Rocco Thompson also scored a rushing touchdown for the Warriors. Armand Hill had a 56-yard touchdown run and Zawaun Glover and Jose Perez hooked up for a 21-yard TD pass for the Titans.
Boys soccer
Bentworth 4, Blackhawk 0 – Ryan Moessner scored three goals and goaltender Isaac Vipperman posted the shutout as Bentworth (1-0) defeated Blackhawk (0-1) at the Canon-McMillan tournament.
Brentwood 5, South Side 1 – Bryan Correa scored twice as Brentwood (1-0) beat South Side (0-1) in a nonsection contest.
Chartiers-Houston 7, Brownsville 1 – Josh Hawkins scored twice and Ryan Thomas had two assists to lead Chartiers-Houston (1-0) past Brownsville (0-1) at the Bucs kickoff tournament. Ashton Kennedy, Jhersson Cruz, Bryson Boskovich and Carter Metzler also scored for Chartiers-Houston.
Deer Lakes 8, Gateway 2 – Collin Rodgers scored five goals and Peyton Kushon had three assists to lead Deer Lakes to a nonsection win. Cuyler Crim, Jake Orseno and Colton Bish also scored for the Lancers. Conrad Wierzchowski scored twice for Gateway (0-2).
Franklin Regional 2, Norwin 1 – Aiden Alexander scored a pair of goals to lead Franklin Regional (1-0) to a 2-1 nonsection win over Norwin. Ryan Schoemer scored for the Knights (0-1).
Freeport 5, Jeannette 0 – Spencer Valasek scored three goals to lead Freeport (1-0) to the nonsection win over Jeannette (0-1). Conor Rumbaugh added one goal and one assist while Henry Good recorded the clean sheet.
Harbor Creek 2, Winchester Thurston 0 – Sean Kirsten scored one goal and set up another as Harbor Creek beat Winchester Thurston (0-1) at the Pine-Richland tournament.
Mt. Pleasant 3, Connellsville 0 – Grant Zahrobsky scored on a penalty kick and added two assists as Mt. Pleasant defeated Connellsville in a nonsection game. Grayson Gardner had two saves in the shutout.
North Allegheny 7, Mercyhurst Prep 0 – At the Pine-Richland tournament, seven different players scored as North Allegheny (2-0) shut out Mercyhurst Prep.
Neshannock 10, Sharpsville 0 – Caeden Turner scored five goals to lead Neshannock (1-0) past Sharpsville in nonsection play. Zayden Herb added three goals.
Penn Hills 2, West Mifflin 2 – Cooper Hilligsberg and Zaim Sharafe scored second-half goals to lead West Mifflin (0-0-1) to a nonsection draw. Jesse Truman and Oshea Ward scored for Penn Hills (0-0-1).
Penn-Trafford 3, Hempfield 0 – Brendan Neubauer, Dom Daykon and Ryan Geyer scored to lead Penn-Trafford (1-0) to a nonsection win over Hempfield (0-1).
Peters Township 3, Bethel Park 1 – Anthony Maiello netted a pair of goals and Nathan Matuszewski also scored to help Peters Township (1-0) to a nonsection win over Bethel Park (0-1).
Plum 4, North Hills 0 – Jimmy Jodkin and Kent Holmes scored two goals apiece as Plum (2-0) won the kickoff tournament hosted by the Mustangs with a 4-0 win over North Hills (1-1). Andy Strasser had three assists ad Chase Eber and Jack Majchar shared the shutout for Plum.
Ringgold 1, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Izaiah Wilson scored the game’s only goal as Ringgold (1-0) shut out Elizabeth Forward (0-1) in the Moe Rosensteel Memorial tournament.
Seneca Valley 2, LaSalle College 0 – Zach White and Ben Baronner scored to lead Seneca Valley (1-0) at the Pine-Richland tournament.
Seton LaSalle 6, Bishop Canevin 0 – Tyler Kovalcik scored three goals and Charlie Kicinski picked up the shutout in net as Seton LaSalle (1-0) defeated Bishop Canevin (0-1).
Shaler 4, Upper St. Clair 3 – Tyler Shaw had two goals and Anthony Tylenda and Tazanie Hinds also scored to lead Shaler (1-1) over Upper St. Clair (0-2) at the Plum tournament.
Thomas Jefferson 5, Baldwin 1 – In nonsection play, Owen Householder had two goals as Thomas Jefferson (1-0) shut out Baldwin (0-1).
Girls soccer
Ambridge 6, Eden Christian 2 – Norah Marchionda had a hat trick, Hayden Grant, Ada Stojan and Nadia Benkowski also scored and Ambridge (1-0) rallied from a 2-1 deficit in the second half to beat Eden Christian (0-1) in a nonsection opener.
Chartiers-Houston 4, Brownsville 0 – Amelia Brose scored a hat trick in the first half, Nana Bimpong also scored and Hailey Seige made eight saves for the shutout as Chartiers-Houston (1-0) blanked Brownsville (0-1) in the Bucs’ kickoff tournament.
Franklin Regional 1, Thomas Jefferson 0 – Reese Regelski scored the lone goal and Addison Ayres picked up the shutout as Franklin Regional (1-0) beat Thomas Jefferson (0-2) at the Moe Rosensteel Memorial tournament.
Mars 3, Kiski Area 0 – Liv Halliday scored twice and Miley Gratton added a goal as Mars (2-0) defeated Kiski Area (0-1) at the Mars kickoff tournament.
Montour 3, Hampton 1 – Irelynn Hobbs notched the hat trick as Montour (1-0) beat Hampton (0-1) in a nonsection game.
North Catholic 2, Latrobe 1 – Simone Sharpless scored twice and Megan Heinbach had two assists as North Catholic (1-0) won at the Moe Rosensteel Memorial Kickoff Classic. Liv Ross scored for Latrobe (0-1).
South Park 4, Baldwin 0 – Arianna Beck, Aubrey Tabak, Ella Voyten and Gabriella Bonacci scored as South Park (2-0) blanked Baldwin (1-0) at the South Hills Classic.
West Mifflin 5, South Allegheny 0 – In nonsection play, Jada Downs scored two goals and Caroline Chelosky added one goal and two assists as West Mifflin (1-0) beat South Allegheny (0-1). Isabella Simak recorded six saves for the shutout.
Volleyball
Brownsville 3, Carmichaels 0 – At Jefferson-Morgan, Kenzie Adams has 12 service points and 15 assists while Skyler Gates recorded 12 kills as Brownsville beat Carmichaels, 25-23, 25-22, 25-19.
