High school roundup for Aug. 25, 2025: Defending champion Peters Township girls pick up 1st win

Marina Hajnosz and Rylie Busch scored to lead defending WPIAL Class 4A champ Peters Township (1-0-1) to a 2-0 victory over Penn-Trafford (0-1) in nonsection girls soccer Monday.

Belle Vernon 4, Steel Valley 1 – Ali Watson, Saylor Lee, Payton Walsh and Chessa Mertz scored to lead Belle Vernon (1-0, 1-0) to a Section 1-2A win over Steel Valley (0-3, 0-1). Jordyn McDowell had two assists and Mertz also set up a goal for the Leopards.

Bentworth 4, Albert Gallatin 0 – Brielle Dillon and Brina Orsatti scored in the first half and Bella Moyer netted a pair in the second to lead Bentworth (1-0) past Albert Gallatin (0-1) in a nonsection match.

Burrell 0, Mt. Pleasant 0 — Playoff rivals Burrell (0-0-1) and Mt. Pleasant (1-0-1) played to a scoreless draw in a nonsection match.

Canon-McMillan 11, Woodland Hills 0 – Rachel Tomley scored four goals and Sarah Coffman and Sarah Warzinski each produced a goal and an assist as Canon-McMillan (1-0) shut out Woodland Hills (0-1) in nonsection play. Audrey Calgaro, Chloe Laskosky, Paige Masci, Quinn Paris and Taylor Withers also scored for the Big Macs.

Fox Chapel 2, Shaler 1 – One day after announcing her verbal commitment to Pitt, Emily McKee scored a pair of goals to lead Fox Chapel (2-0, 1-0) to a Section 1-3A victory. Naudia Zotter scored for Shaler (0-1, 0-1).

Freeport 8, Indiana 0 – Peyton Los had two goals and an assist and Nia DiSanti also scored twice to lead Freeport (1-0) to a nonsection win. Camryn Woods and Ella McConville had a goal and an assist, CeCe Schlegel and Elena Jenkins also scored and Alyssa Alcorn recorded the shutout for the Yellowjackets.

Keystone Oaks 1, Ringgold 0 – Bailey Barkley scored an unassisted goal that stood as the deciding tally as Keystone Oaks (1-0, 1-0) blanked Ringgold (0-2, 0-1) in Section 1-2A.

Kiski Area 9, Greensburg Salem 3 – Ellie Arnold had a hat trick and Addison Bell scored twice to send Kiski Area (1-1, 1-0) to a Section 4-3A win. Marlea Reiner, Gretchen Freund, Maria Safranyos and Addison Buffone also scored for the Cavaliers. Laila McDade had two goals and Tieanna Ventura also scored for Greensburg Salem (0-1, 0-1).

Mars 3, Yough 0 – Mackenzie Powell, Liv Halliday and Maeve O’Leary scored to power Mars (3-0) to a nonsection shutout win over Yough (0-1).

Montour 2, Central Valley 1 – Irelynn Hobbs scored both goals for Montour (2-0) as the Spartans bested Central Valley (0-1) in a nonsection match.

North Catholic 11, Brashear 0 – Simone Sharpless had three goals and an assist and Julia Silet added a goal and three assists to send North Catholic (2-0) to a nonsection win over Brashear (0-1). Megan Heinbach and Frankie Liberati each had a goal and an assist for North Catholic.

Pine-Richland 1, Norwin 0 – Charlie Kline scored and Shea Best recorded the shutout as Pine-Richland (1-0) picked up a nonsection win over Norwin (0-1).

Riverview 9, Greensburg Central Catholic 1 – Freshman Mia Murphy had a hat trick and Mary Quinlan and Hannah Hudack scored two goals each to lead Riverview (1-0, 1-0) to Section 4-A win over Greensburg Central Catholic. Georgia Tsambis and Catie Hoolahan also scored for the Raiders.

Serra Catholic 5, Bishop Canevin 1 – Bella Dumbroski scored a hat trick and Milena Poziviak produced three assists as Serra Catholic (1-0, 1-0) beat Bishop Canevin (0-1, 0-1) in Section 3-A.

Seton LaSalle 4, Carlynton 2 – Kennedy Bakota and Tori Carter scored two goals apiece to lead Seton LaSalle (1-1, 1-0) to a Section 3-A win. Shania Purdom and Mary Crawford scored for Carlynton (0-1-1, 0-1).

Springdale 7, Ellis School 0 – Hailey Marchlewski had a hat trick and added two assists to lead Springdale (1-0, 1-0) past Ellis School (0-1, 0-1) in Section 4-A. Ariana Caltagarone had a goal and an assist, Tessa Derringer, Shelby DiPalma and Ainsley Wade also scored and Mia Pesce had a pair of assists for the Dynamos.

West Allegheny 4, Bethel Park 0 – Mariana Parilli, Eliana Rosenwald, Maddy Pons and Mia Bardelli scored as West Allegheny (1-1, 1-0) defeated Bethel Park (0-1, 0-1) in Section 2-3A.

Winchester Thurston 5, Apollo-Ridge 0 – Jessie Kaufmann scored twice to power Winchester Thurston (2-1, 1-0) past Apollo-Ridge (0-1, 0-1) in Section 4-A. Kimiko Smuckler, Chengxi Tao and Avi Keller also scored for the Bears.

Boys soccer

Brentwood 8, Valley 0 – Palsen Tamang scored a hat trick and Carter Covey recorded the shutout as Brentwood (2-0) picked up a nonsection win over Valley (0-1).

Charleroi 3, Belle Vernon 2 – Dylan Klinger scored a goal and had two assists while Otis McIntyre and Blake Pendo each buried a goal to lead Charleroi (1-0) to a nonsection victory over Belle Vernon (0-1). Jackson Pressel and Anthony Sawa scored for the Leopards.

Girls volleyball

Mapletown 3, Turkeyfoot 0 – Leah Williamson served up eight aces, Rowan Eisiminger added six aces and four kills, Treslee Weston had six kills, and Marley Shiflett produced 11 assists as Mapletown (1-0) swept Turkeyfoot in nonsection play.

Mars 3, Armstrong 0 – Cecilia Christy had 10 kills and three blocks to lead Mars (1-0) to a nonsection win over Armstrong (0-1). Rylee Wooldridge also had 10 kills, Natalie Janusz recorded eight kills and Gabi Weidemann dished out 26 assists.

McKeesport 3, East Allegheny 0 – Harmony Morris recorded eight aces, including seven in a row, John’Nasya Mack also had eight aces and Sunny Harper had five kills as McKeesport (1-0) defeated East Allegheny (0-1) in a nonsection match.

Mohawk 3, West Middlesex 0 – Marli McBride had five kills and Reagan Magno added four while Macey Tanner had nine assists and Riley Shaffer chipped in seven as Mohawk (1-0) beat West Middlesex in a nonsection matchup.
