High school roundup for Aug. 28, 2023: Mars tops Hampton in girls soccer section opener

Addi Girdwood and Ainsley Ray had a goal and an assist apiece as Mars opened Section 1-3A play with a 3-1 victory over Hampton in WPIAL girls soccer Monday night.

Rosie Pellegrino also scored for the Fightin’ Planets (2-0, 1-0). Emma Langer scored for the Talbots (1-1, 0-1).

Allderdice 3, North Hills 0 – Anisha Willis, Gwen Bernardini and Moriah Neiss scored and Hallie Cohen recorded the shutout in her first varsity start, leading Allderdice (1-0, 1-0) past North Hills (0-1, 0-1) in Section 1-4A.

Beaver 3, Hopewell 2 – Marina Hahn scored the OT winner for Beaver (1-0, 1-0) in a Section 1-2A matchup against Hopewell (0-1, 0-1). Sydney Chontos and Ana Hahn each scored a goal for the Bobcats.

Bethel Park 4, Norwin 2 – Lexi Tekulve scored the game-winner and Olivia Dawsom added an insurance goal as Bethel Park (1-0, 1-0) defeated Norwin (0-1, 0-1) in Section 2-4A. Emma Impellicceiri scored two first-half goals, both assisted by Artemis Conaboy, for the Black Hawks. Cameryn Reed scored twice for the Knights.

Blackhawk 2, Chartiers Valley 0 – Ella Martin and Mackenize Fonner scored first-half goals and Kaylee Coakely recorded the shutout as Blackhawk (1-0, 1-0) beat Chartiers Valley (1-2, 0-1) in Section 4-3A.

Butler 1, Pine-Richland 0 – Leah Deal scored in overtime to lift Butler (2-0, 1-0) to a Section 1-4A win over Pine-Richland (0-2, 0-1).

Charleroi 3, Bentworth 1 – McKenna DeUnger scored twice and Bella Carroto also scored to lead Charleroi (1-0, 1-0) to a Section 2-A win. Bella Moyer scored for Bentworth (0-1, 0-1).

Connellsville 5, Ringgold 2 – Emma Tikey scored two goals and Claudia Prinkey, Rylee Leasher and Molly Gillot each added a goal to lead Connellsville (2-0, 1-0) to a Section 2-3A win over Ringgold (0-1, 0-1).

Eden Christian 4, South Side 1 – Ava Batch scored a pair of goals to help Eden Christian (1-0, 1-0) past South Side (0-1, 0-1) in Section 3-A.

Franklin Regional 3, Kiski Area 0 – Shaeley Reichbaum, Allyssa Velasquez and Reese Phillips scored and Aris Lamanna recorded the shutout as Franklin Regional (1-0) defeated Kiski Area (0-1) in a nonsection matchup.

Greensburg Central Catholic 4, Riverview 3 – Riley Kerr scored a pair of goals, including the overtime winner, to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (1-0, 1-0) to a Section 1-A win. Lola Abraham scored twice for Riverview (0-1, 0-1), bringing her career goal total to 101. Jiana Patterson and Sophia Fisher also scored for the Centurions. Hannah Hudack scored for the Raiders.

Indiana 3, Obama Academy 0 – Sophie Scardina, Mae Turner and Sydney Anderson scored, Anna McKelvy had two assists, and Bella Antonacci and Julia Antonacci combined on the shutout as Indiana (2-1, 1-0) topped Obama Academy (0-2, 0-1) in Section 1-3A.

Keystone Oaks 2, Bishop Canevin 0 – Nina Deweese and Aly Simon scored and Zoie Bout recorded the shutout as Keystone Oaks (2-1) defeated Bishop Canevin (0-1) in a nonsection matchup.

Latrobe 7, Greensburg Salem 1 – Regan Reilly netted a hat trick and Annalyse Bauer scored a pair to pace Latrobe (1-0, 1-0) in a Section 3-3A win over Greensburg Salem (0-2, 0-1). Alexa Yurko and Bri Hoffer added a goal each for the Wildcats.

Moon 7, Trinity 0 – Sydney Felton scored two goals and Kendall Dydek, Quinn Arnold, Anna Palm, Elizabeth Gallup and Riley Lafayette added a goal apiece for Moon (1-0, 1-0) in a Section 4-3A win over Trinity (0-1, 0-1).

North Allegheny, Shaler 1 – Samantha Braden and Abigail Stager scored two goals apiece to lead North Allegheny (3-0, 1-0) past Shaler (0-1, 0-1) in Section 1-4A.

Oakland Catholic 3, Armstrong 2 – Emma Gompers scored the game-winning goal for Oakland Catholic (1-1, 1-0) with 12 minutes remaining in a Section 1-3A matchup against Armstrong (0-1, 0-1).

Penn-Trafford 7, Penn Hills 0 – Emilie Oslosky scored twice and Emma Stovar, Jess Gadagno, Hanna Weishaar and Avery Bosack each had a goal and an assist to lead Penn-Trafford (2-0, 1-0) past Penn Hills (0-1, 0-1) in Section 3-3A. Aurelia Solomon also scored, Miley Currie had a pair of assists, and Reese Solomon and Alannah Hall combined on the shutout for the Warriors.

Plum 6, Gateway 0 – Ava Weleski had two goals and an assist and Gianna Revetta added a goal and an assist as Plum (1-0, 1-0) blanked Gateway (0-1, 0-1) in Section 3-3A. Serena Carnahan, Rayla Smith and Olivia Bigger also scored and McKenna Anderson, Malayna Smith and Sam Fields combined on the shutout.

Seneca Valley 2, Fox Chapel 1 – Karly Majeski and Ashlee Libby scored second-half goals to lead Seneca Valley (1-0, 1-0) past Fox Chapel (1-1, 0-1) in Section 1-4A.

Serra Catholic 2, Steel Valley 1 – Lydia Reith scored on an assist from Milena Poziviak and Jules Filia also scored to lead Serra Catholic (1-0, 1-0) past Steel Valley (0-3, 0-1) in a Section 1-A win.

Southmoreland 5, Brownsville 1 – Megan Mehall had a hat trick to lead Southmoreland (1-1) past Brownsville (0-1) in a nonsection win.

Thomas Jefferson 8, Belle Vernon 1 – Sami Maglicco had a hat trick and Aislin Majoris scored a pair of goals to lead Thomas Jefferson (1-1, 1-0) in Section 2-3A. Ava Butchki scored for Belle Vernon (0-1, 0-1).

Upper St. Clair 15, Hempfield 0 – Sierra Dupre scored five goals and Helena Walker and Mary Mascaro added two each for Upper St. Clair (3-0, 1-0) in a Section 2-4A win over Hempfield (1-1, 0-1).

Waynesburg 8, Monessen 1 – Ella Miller had a hat trick and added an assist and Lake Litwinovich recorded two goals and an assist to power Waynesburg (1-0, 1-0) in Section 2-A. Sam Saylor scored for Monessen (0-1, 0-1).

West Mifflin 14, McKeesport 0 – Caroline Chelosky and Jada Downs scored four goals a piece for West Mifflin (2-1) in a nonsection win over McKeesport (0-1).

Boys soccer

California 9, Brentwood 0 – Darryl Ray scored four goals to lead California (1-0) to a nonsection win over Brentwood (0-1). Caleb Amoroso scored twice and Alex Merritt made four saves to pick up the shutout.

Hopewell 4, Blackhawk 1 – Chris Colonna scored a pair of goals to lead Hopewell (1-0) to a nonsetion win over Blackhawk (0-1).

Field hockey

Penn-Trafford 5, Norwin 1 — Ava Hershberger scored three goals, including the 100th of her career, in a nonsection victory for Penn-Trafford. Phoebe Gross and Rilie Moors also scored for the Warriors.

Boys golf

Ligonier Valley 204, Mt. Pleasant 220 – Brody McIntosh shot a team-best 39, including a hole-in-one on the sixth hole at Norvelt Golf Club, to lead Ligonier Valley to a Section 2-2A victory. Mt. Pleasant’s Ryan Karfelt was medalist with a 38.

Girls volleyball

Knoch 3, Laurel 0 – Karlee Buterbaugh had 12 kills, Brynne Smith added 14 service points and 20 assists and Sabrina Schlott contributed 10 service points to help Knoch (1-0) sweep Laurel (0-1) in a nonsection match.
