High school roundup for Aug. 28, 2024: Mars gets past Hampton in section showdown

Julia Lishia scored the game’s lone goal to lift Mars (4-0, 1-0) to a 1-0 victory over Hampton (2-1, 1-1) in an early season matchup between top teams in Section 1-3A girls soccer Wednesday night.
Ambridge 3, Hopewell 2 (OT) – Megan Conover scored all three goals, including the game-winner in the final minute of overtime, to lead Ambridge (2-1, 1-1) past Hopewell (0-2, 0-2) in Section 3-2A.
Beaver 3, Central Valley 0 – Lilia Battalini scored two goals and Sydney Chontos added another for Beaver (2-0, 1-0) in a Section 3-2A win over Central Valley (0-2, 0-1).
Bentworth 4, Southmoreland 1 – Bella Moyer, Megan Keturakis, Brina Orsatti and Madelyn Johns scored to lead Bentworth (2-0) to a nonsection win over Southmoreland (1-2).
Bethel Park 7, Trinity 0 – Callee Dalbon and River Hendrych-Bondra scored two goals each to help Bethel Park (1-1, 1-1) top Trinity (0-2, 0-2) in Section 2-3A.
Burrell 3, Winchester Thurston 0 – Leah Waldsmith had a goal and an assist, Lilly Householder and Makiah Buchak also scored and Dana Barczykowski made three saves to preserve the shutout as Burrell (2-0-1) defeated Winchester Thurston (2-1) in a nonsection match.
Carlynton 5, South Allegheny 0 – Riley Mauro scored a hat trick and added an assist and Bella D’Antonio had two goals and an assist to lead Carlynton (1-1, 1-1) past South Allegheny (1-2, 0-1) in Section 3-A. It was Carlynton’s first section win in over five years.
East Allegheny 5, Carrick 1 – Sydney Nellis had a hat trick to lead East Allegheny (1-0) to a nonsection win over Carrick (0-1.
Franklin Regional 1, Kiski Area 0 (OT) – Eden Williams scored in overtime to propel Franklin Regional (1-2, 1-1) past Kiski Area (1-3, 1-1) in Section 4-3A. Addison Ayres recorded the shutout.
Hempfield 2, North Hills 1 – Jiana Patterson scored both goals and Jesse Jury recorded an assist as Hempfield (1-1) ended an 18-match losing streak with a nonsection win over North Hills (1-1).
Indiana 2, Greensburg Salem 1 – Sophie Scardina broke a second-half tie and Jillian Ranes also scored to lead Indiana (1-3, 1-0) past Greensburg Salem (0-2, 0-2) in Section 4-3A.
Keystone Oaks 1, McGuffey 0 – Braidy Lugaila scored for Keystone Oaks (2-0, 2-0) in a Section 1-2A win over McGuffey (2-1, 0-1).
Ligonier Valley 2, Valley 0 – Emily Beech and Gabby Springer scored to lead Ligonier Valley (1-0) to a nonsection win over Valley (1-1).
Moon 4, Blackhawk 1 – Lauren Muhanna had a hat trick and Lilly Snyder added a goal to lead Moon (2-0, 2-0) past Blackhawk (1-2, 1-1) in a Section 2-3A win.
Mt. Lebanon 5, Norwin 3 – Ava Heidenreich, Mary McElhattan, Lily Schereli, Tessa Peer and Genevieve Palumbo scored to power Mt. Lebanon (3-0-1) to a nonsection win. Libby Link, Carmella Simco and Cady Pensenstadler scored for Norwin (0-2).
North Catholic 8, Woodland Hills 0 – Lauren Mealie had two goals and two assists and Simone Sharpless and Julia Siket added two goals apiece to help North Catholic (3-0) to a nonsection win over Woodland Hills (0-2). Kathleen Virostek and Katelyn Phillips also scored.
Peters Township 2, Seneca Valley 1 (OT) – Julia Spergel netted the game winner and Natalie Faingnaert also scored for Peters Township (3-0) in a nonsection victory over Seneca Valley (2-2).
Plum 2, Elizabeth Forward 0 – Emily Grubich and Ali Joyce scored, Mia Nardo had an assist and Makenna Anderson and Malayna Smith combined on the shutout as Plum (2-0, 2-0) defeated Elizabeth Forward (1-1, 1-1) in Section 4-3A.
Riverview 2, Ellis School 0 – Hannah Hudack and Molly Morrissey scored to lead Riverview (2-0, 2-0) to a Section 4-A win over Ellis School (0-2, 0-2).
Seton LaSalle 8, Bishop Canevin 0 – Angelina McGrath scored twice to lead Seton LaSalle (2-0-1, 2-0) to a Section 3-A win over Bishop Canevin (1-1, 1-1). Sydney Towers, Sydney Morgan, Kendall DeMarino, Brynlee Robinson, Kennedy Bakota and Torri Carter also scored for the Rebels.
South Fayette 4, West Allegheny 0 – Gabriella Beinecke scored two goals and Quinn Miller and Emily Sinton added a goal apiece to lead South Fayette (1-1) to a nonsection win over West Allegheny (1-1).
South Park 7, Belle Vernon 1 – Ella Voyten and Madelynn Serechin scored two goals apiece to lead South Park (2-2, 2-0) to a Section 1-2A win. Jordyn McDowell scored for Belle Vernon (1-1, 1-1).
Springdale 10, Apollo Ridge 0 – Bri Ross had two goals and two assists and Tessa Derringer, Carissa Walsh and Ainsley Wade added two goals apiece to power Springdale (2-0, 2-0) past Apollo-Ridge (0-2, 0-2) in Section 4-A. Kaitlyn Shock had a goal and an assist and Lacey Shondeck also scored for the Dynamos.
Upper St. Clair 2, Penn-Trafford 0 – Sierra Dupre and Penny Walker scored and Cam Friday secured the shutout as Upper St. Clair (3-0) defeated Penn-trafford (0-2) in a nonsection match.
West Mifflin 5, Laurel Highlands 3 – Jada Downs had a hat trick and Caroline Chelosky added two goals to lead West Mifflin (1-1) past Laurel Highlands (0-1) in a nnonsection win.
Yough 10, Highlands 0 – Brooke Wieland had a hat trick and Britany Baumeister and Kate Slavick added two goals each to carry Yough (3-1) to a nonsection win over Highlands (0-2). Gionna Piontka, Grace Tomko and Daisy Miller also scored.
Boys soccer
Brentwood 4, St. Joseph 1 – Chris Lopez had a hat trick and Evan Mingle also scored to lead Brentwood (1-0) to a nonsection win over St. Joseph (0-2).
Charleroi 7, Southmoreland 0 – Landon Barcus had a hat trick and Ethan Hartley added a pair of goals to lead Charleroi (1-0, 1-0) to a Section 4-2A win over Southmoreland (2-1, 0-1). Dylan Klinger and Blake Pendo also scored and Max Goodwin recorded the shutout.
Girls volleyball
Derry 3, Ligonier Valley 0 – Haylee Myers had nine kills and Julia Mucci added seven kills to lead Derry to a 26-24, 25-18, 25-20 nonsection victory. Kayla Enos recorded seven digs and Regan Repak dished out 30 assists for Derry. Riley Monticue led Ligonier Valley with nine kills and three blocks.
Hempfield 3, North Hills 1 – Elle Berkebile had 16 kills and Preslee Horchak had 35 assists for Hempfield in a 27-25, 25-12, 25-10 win over North Hills.
Mars 3, Shaler 1 – Cecilia Christy had a dozen kills and Rylee Wooldridge tallied 11 kills to push Mars past Shaler in nonsection play. Fightin’ Planets setter Hailey Duker finished with 33 assists.
