High school roundup for Aug. 30, 2025: Seton LaSalle surges past Bishop Canevin

Kymarr Freeman scored on a pair of second-half touchdown runs as Seton LaSalle surged to a 22-7 victory over Bishop Canevin in nonconference football Saturday night.

Freeman ran 23 times for 61 yards with scoring runs of 3 and 1 yards, Kia Jones also had a 3-yard TD run, and Deondre Hill ran 17 times for 78 yards for the Rebels (1-1). Damar Olds caught six passes for 165 yards, including an 80-yard touchdown from Brady Wagner in the first quarter, for the Crusaders (0-2).

Boys soccer

Avonworth 8, Knoch 0 – Owen Dugan had two goals and an assist and Jimmy Quinn also scored twice to lead Avonworth (2-1) past Knoch (0-2-1) in the ‘Lopes Cup tournament. Nate Kline had a goal and two assists, Calder Mahan and Cody Cwynar each notched a goal and assist and Hal Bevington also scored.

Beaver County Christian 2, Blackhawk 0 – Mike Lanigan recorded his third shutout of the season as Beaver County Christian (3-0) beat Blackhawk (0-4) in nonsection play. Ben Crefeld and Zach Stephens scored second-half goals in the win.

Belle Vernon 1, Connellsville 1 – Jesse Sobczak scored to help Belle Vernon (2-2-1) to a draw with Connellsville (1-2-1) at the Paul Sasko Classic.

Freeport 11, Leechburg 0 – Ryan Sutara scored three goals and added two assists to lead Freeport (2-1, 1-1) to the Section 1-2A win over Leechburg (0-3, 0-2). Carson Rowley and Nate Watson contributed two goals each.

Laurel Highlands 4, Southmoreland 0 – Cole Radcliffe scored three goals and tacked on one assist to lead Laurel Highlands (3-1) to its second win of the day by beating Southmoreland (0-2) in the Fayette County Coaches tournament.

Laurel Highlands 4, Uniontown 2 – In the first game of the Fayette County Coaches tournament, four different players scored goals for host Laurel Highlands (3-1) in its win over Uniontown (0-3).

Montour 6, Mercyhurst Prep 0 – Owen Leibhart scored two goals and Mario Passaro, Jefferson Lopez, Tyler Fritzius and Samuel Rose each added a goal to lead Montour (4-0) at the ‘Lopes Cup tournament at Avonworth.

Neshannock 7, Wilmington 2 – Zayden Herb had two goals as Neshannock (3-0) beat Wilmington in a nonsection game. Neshannock has scored 24 goals over three games this season.

Norwin 0, North Allegheny 0 (OT) – The Knights (0-3-1) and Tigers (3-1-1) played to a scoreless draw in a nonsection match.

South Allegheny 6, Jeannette 1 – Kaden Gatchie and Brayden Hernandez had two goals and one assist each as South Allegheny (1-2) defeated Jeannette (1-2) in nonsection play. Eli Noel added a goal and an assist while Revan Sheader saved nine out of 10 shots to claim the win.

South Side 3, Bishop Canevin 2 (OT) – Logan Leatherman scored his third goal of the game in overtime to give South Side (1-1) the nonsection win against Bishop Canevin (0-3). Nate Ashcroft had two assists for South Side.

Thomas Jefferson 4, Belle Vernon 0 – Jacob Surrena, Tyler Schrello, Evan Olson and Cody O’Hare scored and Sam Wessel preserved the shutout to lead Thomas Jefferson (2-2) past Belle Vernon (2-2-1) at the Paul Sasko Classic.

Girls soccer

Allderdice 3, Obama Academy 0 – Alexa Leventon scored two goals and Emma Daley picked up the shutout as Allderdice (4-0) beat Obama Academy (0-3) in nonsection play. Allderdice allowed one goal in its first game of the season and has recorded three shutouts since.

Beaver 3, Blackhawk 2 – In nonsection play, Mia Furda had one goal and two assists as Beaver (2-3) beat Blackhawk (0-2-1). Ana Hahn added a goal and an assist for Beaver while Cali Coups made 10 saves to pick up the win in goal.

Belle Vernon 3, Greensburg Salem 1 – Ali Watson scored twice and Abby Russell added a goal to lead Belle Vernon (2-1) at the Paul Sasko Classic. Eden Wilson scored for Greensburg Salem (2-2).

Bentworth 5, Albert Gallatin 1 – Five players scored for Bentworth (2-1) in its win over host Albert Gallatin (0-2) at the Fayette County Coaches tournament.

Bentworth 4, Laurel Highlands 4 – Megan Keturakis scored three goals, giving her four on the day, as Bentworth (2-1-1) tied Laurel Highlands (1-1) in its second game at the Fayette County Coaches tournament.

Burrell 4, Keystone Oaks 0 – Leah Waldsmith netted a pair of goals and Makiah Buchak and Myla Buchak also scored to lead Burrell (1-0-1) past Keystone Oaks (2-1) at the West Allegheny tournament.

Butler 4, Mercyhurst Prep 0 – Malina McElroy, Cecelia Wolford, Kara Lubinsky and Callie McKindley scored as Butler (2-1) shut out Mercyhurst Prep in a nonsection game.

Canon-McMillan 8, Chartiers Valley 0 – Ellie Semple and Rachel Tomley scored two goals each as Canon-McMillan (2-1) defeated Chartiers Valley (0-3) in nonsection play.

Cathedral Prep 7, Avonworth 0 – At the Avonworth tournament, Alex Senz had two goans and an assist as Cathedral Prep shut out the host team (1-2).

Deer Lakes 9, Highlands 0 – Claire Cacurak and Cadence Drum scored three goals each as Deer Lakes (3-0) shut out Highlands (0-3) in nonsection play. Tessa Hollibaugh added two goals.

Moon 2, Fort LeBoeuf 1 – Maddie Shaver and Ally D’Alesio had goals and Samantha D’Alesio recorded the shutout as Moon (3-0) beat Fort LeBoeuf in nonsection play.

North Allegheny 3, Norwin 0 – Kieran Shannon scored twice and Mwende Abai added a goal to lead North Allegheny (3-1-1) past Norwin (1-2) in a nonsection match.

Pine-Richland 1, Quaker Valley 0 – Emme Kline scored the decisive goal in the second half and Shea Best earned the shutout as Pine-Richland (3-0) defeated Quaker Valley (1-1) at the West Allegheny tournament.

Plum 4, Gateway 0 – Olivia Bigger had two goals and Ali Joyce added one goal and two assists as Plum (3-0) defeated Gateway (2-1) in nonsection play. Malayna Smith recorded the shutout.

South Fayette 4, Bethel Park 0 – Quinn Miller had two goals, Mia Deramo and Lexi Deutschendorf also scored and Caitlyn Thompson and Lainey Kuglar combined on the shutout to help South Fayette (1-1-1) past Bethel Park (1-2) at the Avonworth tournament.

Thomas Jefferson 2, West Allegheny 1 – Sam Maglicco and Natalie Narr scored to lead Thomas Jefferson (1-2) past West Allegheny (2-2) at the West Allegheny tournament.

Waynesburg 8, Uniontown 0 – Emily Rafferty collected three goals and two assists and Kolbi Rastoka also had a hat trick to lead Waynesburg (3-0) past Uniontown (0-3) at the Fayette County Coaches Association tournament. Rylei Rastoka added a goal and three assists, Gracie Knisley also scored, Ava DiAlesandro had two assists and Peyton Cowell recorded the shutout.

Waynesburg 4, Albert Gallatin 1 – Kolbi Rastoka and Emily Rafferty each had two goals and an assist and Tess Pauley added a pair of assists for Waynesburg (3-0) in a win over Albert Gallatin (0-3) at the Fayette County Coaches Association tournament.

Cross country

Gateway Invitational – Fox Chapel swept the team titles and Kiski Area’s Samuel Plazio won the boys race in a time of 16:30.30. On the boys side, Fox Chapel got top 10 finishes from Michael Costello (second), Asher Eckel (third), Nolan Home (seventh) and Nolan Gwin (eighth).

On the girls side for the Foxes, Claire Loudice was fourth, Cecilia Ressler fifth, Maeve Sherry sixth, Bridget Hemingway eighth and Ella Shevchuk ninth.

West Allegheny’s Grace Fritzman won the girls race, topping Gateway’s Piper Munyon.

Girls volleyball

Fayette County Coaches Association tournament – Skyler Gates had 35 kills, eight blocks and 12 aces to lead Brownsville to a 25-21, 26-24 win over Laurel Highlands in the tournament finals. Aijanae Foster had 13 kills, nine blocks and six aces, Kenzie Adams dished out 23 assists, Ari Johnson added 17 assists and Ashley Evanchak recorded 41 digs.
