High school roundup for Dec. 11, 2024: North Catholic tops Oakland Catholic in Class 4A girls showdown

Sam Weir hit three 3-pointers and scored 19 points as North Catholic defeated Oakland Catholic, 42-34, in Section 1-4A girls basketball Wednesday night to run its winning streak in section competition to 109 games.

North Catholic (1-2, 1-0) jumped out to a 21-4 lead after one quarter and held off Oakland Catholic (1-2, 0-1) from there. Makayla Canty scored eight points for the Eagles (1-2, 0-1).

Central Valley 67, Steel Valley 14 – Nyah Hayes scored 19 points and Dominique Douglas and Emma Brown added 10 points apiece for Central Valley (2-1) in a nonsection win over Steel Valley (0-4).

Connellsville 45, Belle Vernon 37 – Maggie Orndorff and Elizabeth Painter scored 11 points apiece and Whitney Bobish added 10 to lead Connellsville (1-5) to a nonsection win. Aubrey Brown scored 17 points and Abby Russell had 10 for Belle Vernon (2-3).

Erie 45, Butler 40 – Aundraya Neavins scored 18 points and Aubrey Neavins added 17 for Erie in a nonsection win. Avery Maier scored 16 points for Butler (3-2).

Hempfield 57, North Hills 45 – Ava Shipman led all scorers with 14 points, Allie Cervola followed with 13 and Mads Pevarnik had 12 to lead Hempfield (5-0) to a nonsection victory over North Hills (2-3).

Penn-Trafford 57, Baldwin 46 – Torrie DeStefano led with 15 points, Isabella Fontana followed with 13 and Raya Johnson and Kam Pieper added 11 points apiece for Penn-Trafford (6-0) in a nonsection win. Julianne Ott scored 14 points and Mary Vargo had 13 for Baldwin (2-3).

Quaker Valley 35, Winchester Thurston 34 – Mimi Thiero scored 14 points for Quaker Valley (2-3) in a nonsection win. Sky Still scored 13 points and DaShae Cochran had 11 for Winchester Thurston (3-2).

Boys basketball

Baldwin 58, Penn-Trafford 53 – Nate Wesling scored 18 points and Matthew Schenk added 10 to lead Baldwin (4-0) to a nonsection win. Zach Feldman scored 13 points and Tyler Anthony and Evan Gross had 12 points apiece for Penn-Trafford (2-3).

Carrick 72, Apollo-Ridge 37 – Brayden Fisher led Carrick (2-2) with 26 points and Kelenn Ward followed with 23 in a nonsection win. Zane Beatty scored 15 points and Alexander Clawson had 13 for Apollo-Ridge (1-5).

Chartiers-Houston 72, Brentwood 55 – Aaron Walsh led all scorers with a career-high 28 points, Justus Buckingham followed with 13 and Nate Gregory had 12 for Chartiers-Houston (3-1) in a nonsection win. Colton Rosing scored 31 points and Forrest Betz had 10 for Brentwood (1-3).

Ligonier Valley 70, Leechburg 35 – Parker Hollick scored 22 points to lead Ligonier Valley (2-2) to a nonsection win. Brady Rollinger scored 10 for Leechburg (1-6).

Lincoln Park 63, Hopewell 62 – Damar Johnson led with 17 points, Ahmir Woods followed with 16 and Antonio Goodman added 14 to push Lincoln Park (2-3) to a nonsection win. James Armstrong scored 19 points and Jeremy Benninghoff had 15 for Hopewell (3-3).

Mars 59, Perry 31 – Austen Wroblewski scored 26 points and made six 3-pointers to lead Mars (2-3) to a nonsection win. Landen Boykin and Keith Johnson scored eight points apiece for Perry (0-4).

Wrestling

Bentworth 42, Frazier 26 – Owen Ivcic (160) knocked off Ryan Celaschi, 4-1, in a matchup of the top two ranked Class 2A wrestlers at 160 pounds to lead Bentworth (3-4, 1-0) to a Section 3-2A win. Bryce Crowson (145) and Brayden Taggart (215) won by fall and Josh Hancock (121) and Drake McClure (139) also picked up wins for Bentworth. Jonah Erdely (152) and Jackson Angelo (189) had pins and Tanner Hayes (133) and Andrew Bandish (172) won by major decision for Frazier (3-3, 0-1).

Butler 58, Mars 15 – Troy Ritson (189), Ace McElravy (215) and Diamond Cantera (285) recorded pins in the final three weights to lead Butler (2-0, 1-0) in Section 4-3A. Nicholas Savannah (114), Charlie Rodgers (139) and Leo Iarrapino (145) also had pins and Kase Chopp (152) and Sutton Stoner (160) won major decision for the Golden Tornado. Samuel Passarelli (121) won by decision for Mars (1-1, 0-1).

Franklin Regional 43, Moon 12 – Franklin Regional won 10 bouts to secure a nonsection win. Salvatore Nassif (127) and John Montgomery (215) had pins, Titus Colangelo (114), Max Firestine (145) and Henry Patts (189) won by tech fall, Beau Fennick (107) and Michael Ruane (133) recorded major decisions and Nico Sarnic (139), Luke Ankney (152) and Ethan Cartwright (160) won decisions for the Panthers (4-0). Michael Olszewski (172) won by fall and Landon Lower (121) and Khalil Razipour (285) took decisions for Moon (0-1).

Jefferson-Morgan 52, South Park 9 – Jefferson-Morgan (1-1) won 10 bouts en route to a nonsection win. EJ Lingenfield (127), Colton Humphreys (139), Payton Bastian (160) and Landon Heath (285) won by fall, Connor Pinchok (121) by tech fall, James Dulaney (133) and Jase Bedilion (215) by major decision and Johnny Gilbert (145), Dominic Sowden (152) and DeSean Johnson (172) by decision. Gino Pecora (145) and Cael Ott (160) also had pins and Luke DeSantis (127) won by tech fall for the Warriors. Joel Kline (133), Trent Reese (152) and Frank Grazulis (285) won by fall and Owen Campbell (139) had a tech fall and Julien Sepelyak (172) won by decision for Plum (0-1, 0-1).

Seneca Valley 44, Pine-Richland 28 – Dean Sauers (152), James Bidoli (160), Cooper Beres (189), Landon Davis (215), Thomas Wuycheck (285) and Bryce Berekstazi (114) all recorded pins for Seneca Valley (4-4, 1-0) in Section 4-3A. Zach Hill (145) won by tech fall and Logan Brethauer (127) by decision. Southmoreland 53, Yough 21 – Landyn Queer (139), Shawn Hollis (152), Hunter Pepiot (160), Kaden Shannon (215) and Jacob Govern (285) recorded pins and Landon Delara (172) won by tech fall for Southmoreland (3-5, 1-0) in a Section 7-2A win. Upper St. Clair 36, Baldwin 34 – George Drutis (145), Derek Worstell (160) and Luca Coury (172) had pins to power Upper St. Clair (1-0, 1-0) to a Section 3-3A win. Baldwin (0-1, 0-1) won seven of the 10 contested matches but forfeited three weights. Dylan Fleming (114), Jason Alex (127), Mike Griffiths (139) and Javad Yoususuzi (215) won by pin, Ramil Islamov (152) by tech fall and Cole Deicas (133) and Aiden Guthrie (121) by decision for the Highlanders.

Valley 42, Riverview 30 – Antonio Perkins (160) and Omar Sanchez (215) won by fall to lead Valley (1-0, 1-0) to a Section 9-2A win. Riverview (1-2, 0-1) won five of the seven contested bouts but forfeited five weights. Brady Daugherty (152), John Moses (172), Cole Brunn (189), Pierce Colvin (285) and Chase Siburt (114) had pins for the Raiders.
