High school roundup for Dec. 20, 2018: No. 4 Norwin girls take down No. 5 Seneca Valley

The Norwin girls basketball team faced one of its toughest tests of the young season Thursday night and passed with flying colors.

Emily Brozeski scored 16 points, and Olivia Gribble added 14 as No. 4-ranked Norwin picked up a 62-41 victory over No. 5 Seneca Valley in a Section 1-6A game.

Jessica Kolesar added 11 points for Norwin (6-0, 3-0), which closed the game on an 18-4 run.

McKenna Gross scored 18 points for No. 5 Seneca Valley (5-2, 1-2).

Butler 38, Pine-Richland 33 — Led by Julia Gibson’s 12 points, Butler (4-2, 2-1) earned a Section 1-6A win. Meghan Luellen had 15 points for Pine-Richland (2-5, 0-3).

Shaler 53, North Hills 44 — Emily Cavacini had 19 points, and Meghan Lacey added 18 as Shaler (1-5, 1-2) scored a Section 1-6A win. Savannah Powers had 17 points for North Hills (0-6, 0-3).

Peters Township 52, Upper St. Clair 32 — Journey Thompson had 16 points to help Class 6A No. 2 Peters Township (6-0, 3-0) tally a Section 2 victory.

Gateway 47, Armstrong 23 — Lexi Jackson had 18 points to pace No. 4 Gateway (5-2, 2-1) in a Section 2-5A victory.

Blackhawk 85, Hopewell 50 — Mackenzie Amalia had 20 points and Mady Aulbach added 16 as No. 2 Blackhawk (5-1, 2-0) won a Section 2-4A game. Siara Conley tallied 27 points to lead Hopewell (3-3, 1-2).

Keystone Oaks 67, New Castle 57 — Gillian Piccolino scored 23 points, and Isa Bodgan added 20 as Keystone Oaks (5-2, 2-1) won in Section 2-4A. Olivia Valenti scored 21 points for New Castle (3-4, 0-3).

Penn-Trafford 70, Uniontown 34 — In Section 3-5A, Bella Long had 20 points as Penn-Trafford (3-3, 2-1) rolled to victory. The Warriors led 42-16 at halftime.

Southmoreland 54, Yough 16 — Maggie Moore had 17 points, and Bailey Kuhns added 14 as Southmoreland (6-1, 2-1) cruised to a Section 3-4A victory over Yough (2-6, 0-3). The Scotties opened the game on an 18-2 run.

East Allegheny 54, Derry 48 — Amaia Johnson had 25 points, and Abby Henderson added 15 as No. 1 East Allegheny (5-1, 2-1) won in Section 3-3A. Johnson hit 13 of 14 free throws. Destiny Roberts scored 15 points to lead Derry (2-3, 2-1).

Riverview 56, Jeannette 41 — The Raiders blew the game open with a 19-point third quarter as Riverview picked up a Section 2-2A win over rival Jeannette. Sydney McDonough scored 16 points and Francesca Lio added 14 for Riverview (3-4, 2-0). Dymond Crawford finished with a double-double, scoring a game-high 23 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for Jeannette (2-4, 1-2).

Avella 44, Monessen 42 — Brianna Jenkins hit the game-winning shot with 24 seconds left as Avella (4-1, 2-0) won in Section 2-A. Bess Lengauer and Jordan Rush each had 13 points for Avella. Marqula Green scored 13 points for Monessen (1-6, 1-2).

Franklin Regional 61, Obama Academy 31 — Jordan Yaniga had 15 points, and Cali Konek added 14 as Franklin Regional (4-2) won a nonsection game. The Panthers opened on a 20-5 run and led 39-11 at halftime.

Blairsville 72, Ligonier Valley 20 – Peyton Potter had 15 points to lead Blairsville (5-2, 2-1) to a Heritage Conference win. Destiny Sheriff had four points for Ligonier Valley (1-5, 1-3).

Apollo-Ridge 45, Indiana 39 — Maddy Moore scored a game-high 15 points and Rylee Eaton added 12 as Apollo-Ridge (5-1, 2-1) picked up the Section 1-4A win over Indiana (2-4, 0-3).

Carlynton 56, Deer Lakes 44 — After a hot start to the game, the Lancers’ offense went cold in the second quarter as Deer Lakes dropped it’s first game of the season to Section 3-3A opponent Carlynton. Anna Solomon led Deer Lakes (5-1, 2-1) with 17 points, and Reese Hasley added 10. Jada Lee finished with a game-high 21 points to lead Carlynton (5-1, 2-1).

Steel Valley 41, Valley 30 — Valley took an eight-point lead into halftime, but the Vikings were unable to hold off a furious second half rally by Steel Valley in a Section 3-3A matchup. Kelsey Salopek scored 15 points and Soraya Gibbs scored 10 points for Steel Valley (1-5, 1-2). Dominica Wolfe scored 11 points for Valley (1-6, 0-3).

Canon-McMillan 67, Sir Winstron Churchill (Canada) 45 — Jenna Cromp scored 15 points to lift Canon-McMillan (4-3) to a win at the KSA Disney Classic in Orlando.

North Allegheny 73, Townsend Harris (N.Y.) 31 — Lizzy Groetsch had 19 points, and Rachel Martindale added 16 as Class 6A No. 1 North Allegheny (6-0) cruised to a win at the KSA Disney Classic in Orlando.

Prestonwood Christian (Texas) 57, Oakland Catholic 56 (OT) — Alexis Sestric had 16 points, and Jayde Boyd added 15, but Class 5A No. 3 Oakland Catholic (5-1) fell short at the KSA Disney Classic in Orlando.

Boys basketball

Uniontown 70, South Park 55 — Jahmere Richardson had 17 points, and Billy Deshields added 16 as Uniontown (4-1, 1-0) won in Section 3-4A.

Sewickley Academy 63, Shenango 45 — Isiah Warfield had 25 points to lead No. 1 Sewickley Academy (4-2, 2-0) to a Section 3-2A win.

Moon 60, South Fayette 25 — In Section 2-5A, Jioni Smith had 16 points, and Taru Jones added 14 as No. 2 Moon (6-0, 3-0) earned a win. Connor Mislan had 13 points for South Fayette (4-2, 1-2).

Lincoln Park 74, Mt. Vernon (N.Y.) 66 — Isaiah Smith had 15 points to lead Class 3A No. 1 Lincoln Park (5-0) to a win at the KSA Disney Classic in Orlando.

Upper St. Clair 72, Doris Johnson (Nassau, Bahamas) 61 — At the Atlantis Beach Bash in the Bahamas, Josh Russell had 23 points, including seven 3-pointers, as Class 6A No. 3 Upper St. Clair (6-0) earned a win.

Highlands 61, Yough 48 — Seth Cohen scored 11 points and Luke Cochran put up his second consecutive 20-point effort as Highlands (2-2, 1-0) used a strong second quarter to pick up a Section 1-4A win over Yough (3-3, 0-1). Gamal Marballie had 17 points for the Cougars.

Mater Academy Charter (Fla.) 63, Penn-Trafford 46 — Penn-Trafford (4-1) dropped its first game of the season at the Kreul Classic at Coral Springs, Fla.
