High school roundup for Dec. 21, 2024: Shady Side Academy girls rally past Blackhawk in clash of contenders

Karis Thomas and Leah Buford scored 14 points each to lead Trib HSSN Class 3A No. 1 Shady Side Academy to a 51-48 comeback win over Class 4A No. 2 Blackhawk at the PBC Classic at Ambridge on Saturday.

Aniyah Mitchell added 13 points for the Bulldogs (8-0), who trailed by four points entering the fourth quarter. Aubree Hupp paced the Cougars (7-2) with 16 points. Mia Sheesley added 11 and Ava Pagani had 10.

Allderdice 55, Montour 38 – Bailey White scored 21 points and Peyton Lynch added 17 points and 12 rebounds as Allderdice (4-4) defeated Montour (4-4) at the PBC Classic at Ambridge. Rhyan Sledge chipped in 14 points for Allderdice, which trailed by two heading into the fourth quarter before outscoring Montour 27-8 the rest of the way.

Bethel Park 63, Penn Hills 26 – Sadie Orie had 14 points and Ella Sabatos and Bella Coleman scored 12 points each as Bethel Park (6-2) defeated Penn Hills (1-6) at the PBC Classic at Ambridge.

Keystone Oaks 45, Aliquippa 37 – At the PBC Classic at Ambridge, Lainey Wagner’s 22 points led Keystone Oaks (5-1) past Aliquippa (5-2). Hannah York added 15 points for Keystone Oaks while Carla Brown led Aliquippa with 16 points.

Neshannock 67, Armstrong 29 – Jaidon Nogay scored 16 points to lead Neshannock (6-1) to a nonsection win against Armstrong (1-6). Payton Newman added 13 points for Neshannock, which outscored Armstrong 38-11 in the second half. Amylia Gaiser scored 11 points in the loss.

Oakland Catholic 55, Chartiers Valley 41 – At Ambridge, Josia Fontana scored 13 points and Alayla Bivins and Savanna Daye contributed 12 points each as Oakland Catholic (4-2) beat Chartiers Valley (6-3) in the PBC Classic. Chartiers Valley’s Emma Reynolds led all scorers with 17 points.

OLSH 67, Hopewell 25 – Claudia Ierullo had 17 points as OLSH (6-0) beat Hopewell (1-7) at the PBC Classic at Ambridge. Sara Daeschner added 11 points while Lola Garner tallied 10 points for OLSH.

Peters Township 74, North Atlanta (Ga.) 29 – Natalie Wetzel scored 21 points to lead Peters Township (7-1) to a win at the Tampa Bay Invitational. Alina Sopko added 14 points and Jordyn Welsh had 10 for Peters.

Seton LaSalle 61, Lincoln Park 29 – Tiara Curry scored 16 points as Seton LaSalle (6-1) beat Lincoln Park (2-4) at the PBC Classic at Ambridge. Libby Michalski added 10 points for Seton LaSalle, which led 42-12 at the half.

Southern Garrett (Md.) 41, Indiana 28 – Carly Wilt scored 13 points and Jayden Weaver and Emelee Parks added 10 each to lead Southern Garrett to a nonsection win. Julian Antonacci led Indiana (6-2) with 11 points.

Wilmington 83, Laurel 45 – Lia Krarup hit for 42 points to power Wilmington to a nonsection win. Maelee Hill scored 14 and Jael Henderson had 13 for Laurel (3-5).

Woodland Hills 50, Frankford 35 – Kalena Earl-Hayden scored 18 points and Mylee Young followed with 16 to spark Woodland Hills (4-1) to a win at the Cream of the Crop tournament at Imhotep Charter.

Boys basketball

Aliquippa 78, Farrell 56 – Jeremiah Pratt scored 24 points and Joshua Pratt followed with 20 to power Aliquippa (4-0) to a nonsection win. Qa’lil Goode added 13 for the Quips. Juelz Johnson scored 21 for Farrell.

Belle Vernon 56, Hempfield 45 – Trevor Kovatch had 21 points to lead Belle Vernon (6-3) over host Hempfield (4-4) at the WCCA Shootout. Dom Ghitani added 11 points and 13 rebounds for Belle Vernon while Drew Gordon scored 11 points for Hempfield.

Boyd Anderson (Fla.) 41, Mt. Lebanon 32 – Demarcus DeRoach scored 14 points to lead Boyd Anderson to a win at the Seahawk Classic at Hilton Head, S.C. Sam Deibert led Mt. Lebanon (4-3) with 12 points.

Burrell 63, Derry 56 – Tucker Bitar scored 22 points, breaking the 1,000-point mark for his career on a first-quarter 3-pointer, as Burrell (4-4) defeated Derry (6-3) at the WCCA Shootout at Hempfield. Parker Pruitt added 14 points for Burrell and teammate Adam Wass contributed 10 points. Derry’s Stanley Rajkovich led all scorers with 27 points and 12 rebounds while John Wasnick tallied 17 points.

Jeannette 81, Mt. Pleasant 21 – At the WCCA Shootout, Kymone Brown scored 14 points and Stone Markham contributed 13 points as host Jeannette (7-0) downed Mt. Pleasant (0-8). Jayce Powell and Marcus McGowen added 12 points each for Jeannette.

Ligonier Valley 53, Yough 38 – Parker Hollick scored 28 points to lead Ligonier Valley (5-3) to victory over Yough (1-8) at the WCCA Shootout at Jeannette.

Mainland (Fla.) 70, Uniontown 67 – Kade Manley scored 27 points to lead Mainland (Fla.) to the win at the KSA Tournament in Kissimmee, Fla.. Calvin Winfrey paced Uniontown (7-2) with 20 points while teammates Kelan Milsom and Isaac Ellsworth scored 17 and 16 points.

North Catholic 65, Mariemont (Ohio) 41 – Eli Stofko hit four 3-pointers on the way to scoring a career-high 20 points to lead North Catholic (3-4) over Mariemont (Ohio) at the Queen City Classic in Cincinnati. Jason Fredericks added 16 points for North Catholic while Joe Waskiewicz and Jude Rottmann contributed 11 and 10 points.

Norwin 64, Valley 42 – Stefano Giannikas hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 23 points to lead Norwin (4-4) past Valley (3-5) at the WCCA Shootout at Jeannette.

Southmoreland 53, Greensburg Salem 47 – At the WCCA Shootout at Hempfield, Noah Felentzer scored 13 points and Ty Whoric added 11 as Southmoreland (5-2) beat Greensburg Salem (1-6). Tyler Martin led Greensburg Salem with a game-high 16 points while Braedon Leatherman added 14 points.

Springdale 81, Cheswick Christian Academy 32 – Liam Dexter’s 15 points led five players scoring in double figures for Springdale (7-1) in its nonsection against Cheswick Christian Academy (2-4). Robby Simmen and Garrett Myers each added 12 points while Landon Linderman and Pat Wylly chipped in 10 points each.

Boys wrestling

King of the Mountain – Latrobe’s Luke Willochell (133) and Hunter Snyder (189) won championships at the annual tournament at Central Mountain. Willochell won by tech fall over Bald Eagle Area’s Caden Judice, 17-2 in 4:49. Snyder defeated Bald Eagle Area’s Caleb Close 10-5 in overtime.

Shaler’s Anthony Jones (107) also took home a title, defeating Mifflin County’s Andrew Alexander, 4-2. Canon-McMillan’s Brayden Collins (215) was a runner-up.

Nurse Pro Plus Tournament – Six Connellsville wrestlers brought home tournament titles from West Virginia – Tommy Gretz (106), Nolan Rice (120), Jake Lilley (132), Kai Vielma (138), Evan Petrovich (157) and Lonzy Vielma (165).

Other WPIAL winners were Frazier’s Jonah Erdely (150) and Jackson Angelo (175, Trinity’s Dominic Canali (126) and Fort Cherry’s Braedon Welsh (190).

Girls wrestling

Kiski Area 30, Burrell 30 – Ava Golding (136) recorded a pin to lead Kiski Area to victory on criteria. The Cavaliers won by virtue of having more forfeit victories (4-2). Carmen Bives (124), Isabella Stewart (130) and Katie Koehler (142) had pins for Burrell.
