High school roundup for Dec. 7, 2024: Neshannock girls sweep day-night tipoff doubleheader

When she looked at the final version of her regular season schedule, Neshannock girls basketball coach Luann Grybowski realized her team had been double booked for Saturday. Rather than cancel one of the games at the last minute, she decided to make a day of it.

The Lancers (4-0) swept their tipoff tournament doubleheader Saturday, defeating General McLane, 53-46, at the Lakeview tournament, then busing to New Castle to beat Quaker Valley, 66-40.

In the Lakeview game, Payton Newman scored 15 points and Jaidon Nogay followed with 12. Libby Opp scored 25 and Kylie Leasure added 10 for General McLane.

In the New Castle game, Nogay scored 27 points, Ainsley Allison added 11 and Newman had 10. Mimi Thiero led Quaker Valley (1-3) with 12 points.

Allderdice 76, Connellsville 49 – Bailey White scored 22 points and Rhyan Sledge added 18 as Allderdice (1-3) downed Connellsville (0-4) at the Laurel Highlands tournament. Peyton Lynch chipped in 15 points for Allderdice. Maggie Orndorf led Connellsville with 17 points and Whitney Bobish tallied 16.

Beaver County Christian 41, Neighborhood Academy 21 – Cheyenne Eury scored 14 points and Ella Michalik added 10 for Beaver County Christian (2-0) in the championship game at the Neighborhood Academy tournament, Neveah Jefferson scored 10 points for Neighborhood Academy (1-3).

Bethel Park 79, Elizabeth Forward 75 – Ella Sabatos had 29 points and Sadie Orie contributed 25 as tournament host Bethel Park (2-0) held off Elizabeth Forward (1-2). Isabella Coleman added 12 points for Bethel Park while Kathryn Boff totaled 10. Mia Sostaric led Elizabeth Forward with 25 points while Michelle Jellison scored 18 and Kaelynn Settles tallied 14.

Bishop Canevin 31, Ellis School 20 – Kya Cooley led Bishop Canevin (3-1) with 15 points and Isabella Sysak added 12 in the consolation game of the Fort Cherry tournament. Taelor Spencer scored nine points for Ellis (0-2).

Butler 65, Slippery Rock 35 – Amelia McMichael scored 14 to lead four players in double figures for Butler (3-0) in the championship game of the Slippery Rock tournament. Sydney Patterson added 13 and Avery Maier and Eva Stutz each had 11. CJ Sabo led the hosts with 21 points.

Carlynton 59, Southmoreland 48 – Cydney McClendon scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures for Carlynton (2-1) in the championship game of the tournament hosted by the Cougars. Lucy Vetter and Carlee Hughes added 13 points and Jocelyn Griffin had 12 for Carlynton. Ashley Seder and Olivia Aumer scored 12 points apiece for Southmoreland (2-2).

Chartiers-Houston 55, Brownsville 34 – Ava Capozzoli scored 14 points, Allison Wingard followed with 13 and Ella Richey added 11 for Chartiers-Houston (4-0) in the championship game of the Brownsville tournament. Ava Clark scored 12 points and Skyler Gates had 11 for Brownsville (1-1).

Chartiers Valley 43, North Allegheny 38 – Emma Reynolds scored 13 points and Ava Shazer and Rachel Boehm each added 11 to power Chartiers Valley (2-2) to a nonsection win. Nat Kinross scored 13 points and Vange Balouris added 10 for North Allegheny (1-2)

Derry 44, Jeannette 34 – Lucie Loucks scored 20 points and Jane Huss added 11 as Derry (2-1) went 2-0 at the Major Corley Memorial Tipoff Tournament at Monessen. Navarah Smith led Jeannette (1-2) with 20 points.

Fort Cherry 47, Beaver 42 – Olivia Kemp scored 12 points and Gianna Bianchini added 10 for Fort Cherry (2-1) in the championship game at the Fort Cherry tournament. Annsley Baker led Beaver (3-1) with 28 points.

Fox Chapel 50, Freeport 29 – Bella Urso hit for 22 points to lead Fox Chapel (2-1) at the Freeport tournament. Natalia Schaffer added nine for the Foxes, who jumped out to a 14-4 lead after one quarter. Lilly Holloway led Freeport (0-3) with eight points.

Franklin Regional 46, Canon McMillian 42 – Madison DeRiggi scored 13 points and Toryn Fulton added 11 for Franklin Regional (2-2) at the Moon tournament. Sam Miller scored 17 points and made five 3-pointers for Canon McMillan (2-2).

Indiana 46, DuBois Central Catholic 29 – Julia Antonacci scored 14 points and Addy Hutton added 11 as Indiana (4-1) won the championship game of the DuBois Central Catholic tournament. Ella Elensky scored 12 for the hosts.

Karns City 51, Aquinas Academy 41 – Naomi Venesky scored 19 points to lead Karns City (3-0) to the Aquinas Academy tournament championship win over the host team. Tess Duer tallied 16 points for Aquinas Academy (1-2).

Kiski Area 53, Highlands 27 – Bella Horcicak scored 13 points to lead Kiski Area (4-0) at the Freeport tournament. Tyarah Woods scored 13 points and Bella Bonnett had 11 for Highlands (0-4).

Laurel Highlands 70, Albert Gallatin 38 – Aierra Jenkins had 27 points to lead tournament host Laurel Highlands (3-0) to victory over Albert Gallatin (2-1). Laurel Highlands’ Miya Harris added 13 points while Ayrianna Sumpter chipped in 10. Mya Glison paced Albert Gallatin with 14 points while Mikayla Shea added 13 and Grayce Panos 11.

McKeesport 46, Washington 36 – In nonsection play, Emily Eisenberg scored 15 points and Jessica Miller and Adriana Allison added 12 each as McKeesport (1-4) beat Washington (1-2). Olivia Woods and Nevaeh King led Washington with 10 points each.

Monessen 30, Charleroi 26 – Madison Johnson scored 24 points to lead Monessen (2-0) at the Major Corley Memorial Tipoff Tournament. Monessen took control with a 14-7 advantage in the second quarter. Eden Smith led Charleroi (0-5) with 17 points.

Moon 41, Lincoln Park 19 – Jaedin Griggs led Moon (1-1) with 19 points and Maria Depner added 10 in a win over Lincoln Park (2-3) at the tournament hosted by the Tigers.

North Hills 53, Plum 47 – Gia Minton scored 14 points and Zoe Devlin added 10 to lead North Hills (2-1) to victory at the Plum tournament. Tamia West scored 18 and Riley Stephans added 13 for the host Mustangs (0-2).

Norwin 48, State College 42 – Kendall Berger scored 17 points to lead Norwin (2-1) past the hosts in the championship game of the State College tournament.

Peters Township 56, Pine-Richland 31 – Natalie Wetzel scored 20 points and Bri Morreale had 15 points on five 3-pointers as Peters Township (3-0) beat Pine-Richland (0-3) at the Baldwin/Peters Township tournament. Pine-Richland’s Cait Gentile led all scorers with 21 points.

Ringgold 29, Mt. Pleasant 27 – Jada Gernot scored 12 points and Rihanna Fordham added eight to lead Ringgold (2-1) at the Greensburg Salem tournament. Carmella Spallone led Mt. Pleasant (0-3) with 12 points.

Seton LaSalle 70, Riverview 56 – In the consolation game of the Aquinas Academy tournament, Addie Lonergan scored 22 points and had four 3-pointers as Seton LaSalle (2-1) beat Riverview (1-2). Casey Davis added 15 points and hit four 3-pointers while Tiara Curry added 13 and Amari Elliot 10. Katerina Tsambis had 15 points and Lily Bauer 14 for the Raiders.

Shaler 56, Latrobe 39 – Reese Smetanka hit for 30 points and Bayleigh Perez added 12 to lead Shaler (3-0) past Latrobe (2-2) at the Plum tournament.

Trinity 58, Penn Hills 34 – Kimari Behrens had 12 points and 11 rebounds as Trinity (3-0) defeated Penn Hills (0-2) in a nonsection game. Sutton Williamson and Bentley Layhue added 11 points each for Trinity while Penn Hills’ Milani Oliver led all scorers with 23 points.

Trinity Christian 53, Propel Montour 12 – In the consolation game of the Neighborhood Academy tournament, Elena Myers scored 16 points and Eilidh Edgar added 12 for Trinity Christian (1-1). Ka’Niyah Barbour scored 10 points for Propel Montour (1-3).

Uniontown 45, Bentworth 29 – Tessa Nicholson scored 12 points and Emily Myers added 10 to help Uniontown (0-3) win the consolation game of the Brownsville tournament. Brielle Dillon led Bentworth (1-2) with nine points.

Upper St. Clair 68, Baldwin 54 – Rylee Kalocay scored 35 points and hit five 3-pointers to lead Upper St. Clair (2-1) to win at the Baldwin/Peters Township tournament. Meredith Huzjak added 13 points for Upper St. Clair while Mary Vargo paced Baldwin (1-2) with 14 points.

West Allegheny 64, St. Joseph 43 – Alaina Holtz led with 18 points and Ella Smith, Leila Marchinski and Breana Grubba added 12 points apiece for West Allegheny (3-0) in the championship game of the St. Joseph tournament. Gia Richter scored 18 points for the Spartans (3-1).

Winchester Thurston 65, Frazier 24 – Sky Still and DaShae Cochran scored 11 points apiece to lead Winchester Thurston (2-1) in the consolation game at the St. Joseph tournament. Chloe Harger led Frazier (0-4) with eight points.

Boys basketball

Allderdice 68, Hampton 44 – Asher Schwartz scored 16 points as Allderdice (1-2) defeated Hampton (1-2) in the consolation game of the North Hills tournament. Ryan Zuckerbraun and Trey Schachter added 12 points each for Allderdice while teammate Markus Kuhn recorded 11. Gavin Guinn led Hampton with nine points.

Aquinas Academy 84, South Park 77 – Jake Guillen scored 33 points to lead the hosts to victory in the championship game of the Aquinas Academy tournament. Richie Haring added 15 and Sam Duer 14 for Aquinas Academy (3-1). Luke Scarff scored 28 and Cooper Hochendoner added 20 for South Park (2-1).

Archbishop Spalding (Md.) 79, North Catholic 58 – Elijah Barrett scored 22 points and T.J. Moultrie and Braxton Bogard added 17 points each as Archbishop Spalding (Md.) defeated tournament host North Catholic (0-2). Jason Fredericks scored 14 points for North Catholic while Jude Rottmann added 12 points.

Baldwin 73, Altoona 49 – Nate Wesling hit seven 3-pointers on his way to scoring 35 points to lead Baldwin (2-0) over Altoona at the Baldwin/Peters Township tournament. Max Marzina added 11 points for Baldwin while Josh Lowery led Altoona with 13 points.

Butler 78, Freeport 48 – Tayt Lucas had 21 points to lead Butler (4-0) over tournament host Freeport (1-3). Andrew Gettinger added 18 points for the Golden Tornado.

Carrick 75, Brentwood 45 – Brayden Fisher led Carrick (2-1) with 30 points, Kelenn Ward followed with 23 and Stephon Malloy added 14 in the championship game at the Brentwood tournament. Forest Betz scored 14 points and Colton Rosin had 13 for Brentwood (1-1).

Central Valley 67, Nazareth Prep 40 – Isaiah Jeter hit eight 3-pointers and scored 38 points to lead Central Valley (4-0) to the against Nazareth Prep (1-2) in the Sewickley Academy tournament. Micah Caldwell scored 11 points for Nazareth Prep.

Chartiers Valley 71, Plum 52 – Jayden Davis scored 27 points to lead tournament host Chartiers Valley (4-0) to the win against Plum (0-2). Luke Beckner totaled 22 points in the loss.

Cheswick Christian Academy 67, Propel Montour 50 – Joseph Rosio had 29 points and 10 steals and Brady Rochkind added 27 points and 18 rebounds to lead Cheswick Christian Academy (1-1) in the consolation game at the Aquinas Academy tournament. Keith Booth chipped in 11 for the Chargers. Mar’Jai Porch scored 14 points for Propel Montour (1-3).

Cuyahoga Valley Christian (Ohio) 58, Seneca Valley 49 – At the North Catholic tournament, Niles Nuru had 19 points as Cuyahoga Valley Christian beat Seneca Valley (1-3). Andrew Omasits scored 17 points to lead Seneca Valley.

Eden Christian 59, Carlynton 56 (OT) – James Wilkin and River Bartram scored 14 points each and Mason Dean added 12 to lead Eden Christian (1-2) in the consolation game of the Carlynton tournament. Devonte Dean scored 29 points and Damien Holloway added 11 for the host Cougars (1-2).

Fort Cherry 52, Jefferson-Morgan 45 – Shane Cornali scored 17 points and Jack Kitzmiller added 10 as Fort Cherry (2-1) won the consolation game of the tournament hosted by the Rangers. Houston Guesman and John Woodward each scored 10 for Jefferson-Morgan (0-5).

Fox Chapel 72, Ambridge 41 – Caden Kaiser scored a career-high 24 points and added six rebounds and five assists to lead Fox Chapel (3-0) over Ambridge (1-3) at the Chartiers Valley tournament. Fox Chapel’s John Rehak and Joey McGivney also scored career highs — Rehak with 12 points and McGivney with 10. Jared Astorino had 14 points for Ambridge.

Geibel Catholic 61, Freedom 50 – Evan Strimel scored 28 points and Gary Tarbuk added 14 to help Geibel Catholic (2-1) past Freedom (0-2) in the consolation game of the Brentwood tournament.

Greensburg Central Catholic 81, Greensburg Salem 45 – Liam Gallagher sank five 3-pointers on his way to 21 points to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (3-0) over Greensburg Salem (0-2) in the Hempfield tournament. Samir Crosby added 13 points, A.J. Tarpley contributed 12 and Brandon Martin scored 10 for the Centurions. Tyler Martin scored 19 points for the Golden Lions.

Hempfield 51, Franklin Regional 44 – Danny Husenits scored 18 points and Max Williams added 11 as Hempfield (2-1) won at the tournament hosted by the Spartans. Connor Crossey led Franklin Regional (2-2) with 18 points.

Jeannette 75, Steel Valley 29 – Markus McGowan scored 23 points and Jayce Powell followed with 13 to lead Jeannette (3-0) past Steel Valley (0-6) in the tournament hosted by the Jayhawks.

Kiski Area 65, Seton LaSalle 43 – Colin Keller scored 16 points, Amaree Gonzalez added 15 and Kiski Area (1-2) used a 20-8 advantage in the second quarter to take control of the consolation game at the Upper St. Clair tournament. Brady Walsh led Seton LaSalle (0-3) with 12 points.

Knoch 67, International Sports Academy (Ohio) 44 – Zane Pacek had a triple-double with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 11 blocks as Knoch (2-1) won at the McDowell tournament. Teegan Finucan also scored 12 points and Jackson Bauman added 10 for the Knights.

Laurel Highlands 62, Ligonier Valley 47 – Luke Martin hit five 3-pointers and finished with 25 points to lead Laurel Highlands (1-2) in the consolation game of the Derry tournament. Aiden Black added 14 and Antwan Black had 10 for the Mustangs. Simon Pope led Ligonier Valley (1-2) with 17 points. Michael Vargulish-Graver added 11 for the Rams.

McKeesport 61, Woodland Hills 60 – Matt Sebelia scored 20 points and Lamont Perkins added 17 as McKeesport (1-3) beat Woodland Hills (2-1) in nonsection play. Brian Jones tallied 12 points for McKeesport while Darryl McCullough contributed 10. Scoop Smith led Woodland Hills with 23 points while Landon Akins added 15.

Montour 60, Kipp Legacy 59 – Ama Sow had a double-double with 23 points and 20 rebounds to lead Montour (2-0) at the Pittsburgh vs. DC Showcase at CCAC Allegheny. Colton Straight added 14 points and AJ Alston had 11 for the Spartans.

Moon 55, Central Catholic 52 (OT) – Carter Tumulty scored 26 points and Michael Santicola added 14 to lead Moon (3-1) at the Jack Twyman tournament at Central Catholic. Enzo Khalil scored 16 and Calvin Vento had 13 for the host Vikings (1-1).

Mt. Lebanon 78, North Hills 66 – Sam Diebert scored 22 points and Carter Gould added 11 points as Mt. Lebanon (2-0) won the championship game of the North Hills tournament. Tournament MVP Jacob Zaber contributed 11 points while Ryan Kokot chipped in 10 points. Nathan Schanbacher led North Hills (1-1) with 27 points while Zach Pollaro added 21.

Neighborhood Academy 67, Beaver County Christian 8 – Courtney Wallace scored 19 points, Kedron Gilmore had 13 and Syncer Nicholson added 10 to lead Neighborhood Academy (4-0) past Beaver County Christian (2-1) in the championship game at the Neighborhood Academy tournament.

Neshannock 64, Mohawk 38 – David Kwiat scored 20 points and had five 3-pointers for Neshannock (2-0) in the championship game at the Neshannock tournament. Bobby Fadden scored 22 points for Mohawk (2-1). Tony Perrotts scored 18 points for the Lancers.

Northgate 75, Penn Hills 73 (OT) – Ty Daniels and Dez Williams scored 24 points apiece to lead Northgate (1-1) at the Jack Twyman tournament at Central Catholic. Kaden Kemp added 14 for the Flames. Calix Clark led Penn Hills (0-2) with 22 points. Cato Cahill added 18, Amon Hawthorne 15 and Cam Glenn 13.

North Allegheny 53, Bishop Shanahan 51 – Will Robertson scored as time expired to give North Allegheny (2-1) the consolation win at the State College tournament. John Jubeck and Carter Melzer scored 16 points each to lead North Allegheny while Sean Griffin’s 16 points paced Bishop Shanahan.

OLSH 61, Brownsville 31 – Jake Johnson scored 25 points and Tiernan McCullough added 11 for OLSH (3-0) in the Brownsville tournament championship game. Preston Rosado scored 13 points for Brownsville (0-3).

Penn-Trafford 70, Connellsville 44 – Jack Weishaar scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures for Penn-Trafford (2-1) at the Hempfield tournament. Brayden Stone and Zach Feldman each added 13 and Evan Gross had 11 for the Warriors. Jayden Mickens scored 11 and Tyler Burkus chipped in 10 for Connellsville (2-1).

Peters Township 74, Shaler 44 – Dylan Donovan scored 29 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the host Indians (3-0) at the Baldwin/Peters Township tournament. Jordan Epps scored 15 and Josh Berger added 14 for Shaler (0-3).

Quaker Valley 58, Derry 27 – Zach Washington scored 18 points and Nic Cohen and Sam Chapman added 10 each to lead Quaker Valley (3-1) in the championship game of the Lake Ethel Classic at Derry. Logan Irvin led Derry (2-2) with eight points.

Sharon 81, Mars 55 – Derek Douglas scored 26 points and Levi Hailstock added 25 to lead the hosts in the championship game of the Sharon tournament. Austen Wrobolewski scored 18 points, Ben Deitsch added 13 and Nicholas Santoro had 11 for Mars (1-2).

Southmoreland 41, East Allegheny 36 – Noah Felentzer scored 24 points and Southmoreland (2-1) rallied from a 10-2 deficit after the first quarter to defeat East Allegheny (2-1) in the championship game of the Carlynton tournament.

Springdale 53, Burrell 51 (OT) – Pat Wylly hit the game-winning shot at the buzzer to lead Springdale (3-0) past Burrell (1-2) in the championship game of the St. Joseph tournament. The Dynamos had four players in double figures: Landon Linderman with 12, Liam Dexter and Rob Simmen with 11 and Wylly with 10.

Trinity Christian 48 , Propel Braddock Hills 44 – Darnell Kyte and Luke Kost scored 13 points apiece for Trinity Christian (1-2) in the consolation game at the Neighborhood Academy tournament. Jarrel Santiago led Propel Braddock Hills (0-3) with 27 points.

Uniontown 77, Elizabeth Forward 50 – Notorious Grooms scored 21 points and Calvin Winfrey had 20 points as Uniontown (2-1) picked up the nonsection win. Kelan Milsom added 17 points for Uniontown while Isaac Ellsworth contributed 14 points. Tyler Basic led Elizabeth Forward (3-2) with 17 points while Cy Herchelroath chipped in 10.

Upper St. Clair 82, Bethel Park 23 – Tyler Robbins scored 23 points and Kaamil Jackson and Dane York added 11 points each as Upper St. Clair (3-0) routed Bethel Park (1-2) in the championship game of the tournament hosted by the Panthers.

Winchester Thurston 65, St. Joseph 49 – Anthony Pipkin scored 21 points and Matt Southers added 16 for Winchester Thurston (1-1) in the consolationgame of the St. Joseph tournament. Ben Bartolovic scored 17 points for St. Joseph (1-2).

Wrestling

Chartiers-Houston Invitational – Bethel Park advanced five wrestlers to the finals and crowned two champions in Pierce Reinhart (121) and Seth Miller (133) to take the team title.

Quaker Valley and Peters Township also had two champions each: Matthew Danna (145) and Brennan Breisinger (215) for the Quakers and Nicholas McGarrity (114) and Darius McMillon (152) for the Indians.

Other WPIAL champs were Shaler’s Anthony Jones (107), Butler’s Santino Sloboda (127), Plum’s Owen Campbell (139), Montour’s Rook Smith (160), North Hills’ Carter Morvay (172), South Side’s Slayton Williams (189) and West Greene heavyweight Colin Whyte.

Hickory Invitational – Latrobe took second in the team race crowned three champions. Kai Maxwell (107) beat Hermitage’s Dante Stevenson by a 16-0 tech fall, Luke Willochell (133) won a 3-0 decision over Saint Mary’s Aiden Beimel, and Hunter Snyder (189) won by 10-2 major decision over Penn-Trafford’s Tasso Whipple. Latrobe also had a pair of runners-up: Leo Joseph (127) and heavyweight Marco Scarton.

Penn-Trafford finished fourth in the team race and had two champs. Dylan Barrett (121) won by 17-1 tech fall over Hermitage’s Elijah Scriven and Sidney Hand (145) took a 14-6 major decision from Hermitage’s Mike Reardon.

Host Hickory won the team title with two champions.
