High school roundup for Feb. 1, 2025: South Fayette tops Norwin in battle of WPIAL contenders

Haylie Lamonde scored 13 points as Trib HSSN Class 5A No. 2 South Fayette defeated Class 6A No. 1 Norwin, 48-36, in a nonsection battle of WPIAL girls basketball title contenders Saturday.
Lailah Wright and Ryan Oldaker added 11 points each for the Lions (19-1), who ran their winning streak to 11 games. Kendall Berger scored 13 points to hit the 1,000-point mark for her career for Norwin (11-7). Averi Brozeski contributed 10 points for the Knights.
Beaver Falls 74, Sewickley Academy 9 – Taylor Pullen scored 26 points to lead Beaver Falls (11-6) past Sewickley Academy (4-13) at the Win Palmer Memorial Classic. Dreana Haskins added 16, Dreaven Haskins had 14 and Tamera Eastelle chipped in 11 for the Tigers.
Bethel Park 57, Albert Gallatin 33 – Ella Sabatos scored 18 points to lead Bethel Park (10-9, 6-4) to the Section 4-5A win against Albert Gallatin (7-11, 1-10). Fiona O’Neal added 13 points for Bethel Park while teammate Sadie Orie chipped in 12 points. Grayce Panos tallied 18 points for Albert Gallatin.
Cheswick Christian Academy 45, Harvest Baptist Academy 30 – Grace Kostick scored 25 points and Abby Louis contributed 10 to lead Cheswick Christian (4-2) to a Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference win. Rylee Maruski scored 11 and Addy Frain had 10 for Harvest Baptist (4-3).
Elizabeth Forward 52, Kennedy Catholic 50 – Kaelynn Settles scored 13 points and Kaylin Staszak added 11 points as Elizabeth Forward (16-3) defeated Kennedy Catholic in nonsection play. Madison Pfleger, Bella Magestro and Tori Harvey all scored 14 points each for Kennedy Catholic, which led by three going into the final quarter.
Ellwood City 65, Eden Christian 13 – Delaney Sturgeon scored 28 points to lead Ellwood City (12-7) past Eden Christian (5-11) at the Win Palmer Memorial Classic. Caitlin Kreitzer added 14 and Kayla Jones had 10 for the Wolverines.
Hampton 49, Ambridge 13 – Katie Christy and Ellie Klocko had 12 points each as Hampton (10-8, 5-5) downed Ambridge (1-13, 0-10) in Section 2-4A play.
Hopewell 63, Rochester 33 – Alyssa Spang scored 24 points to lead Hopewell (7-12) past Rochester (9-9) at the Win Palmer Memorial Classic at Sewickley Academy. Caylee Sundy added 14 points for Hopewell and Addison Blosnick chipped in 12 points. Tia Yellock’s 16 points led Rochester.
Karns City 51, Aquinas Academy 38 – Naomi Venesky had 13 points and Savanna Prescott and Brooklyn Taylor added 12 and 11 points for Karns City in its nonsection win against Aquinas Academy (11-7). Katie Tarquinio scored 10 points in the loss.
McKeesport 46, South Park 45 – Sunny Harper had 10 points as McKeesport (6-15) slipped past South Park (13-5) in nonsection play. Bella Stromberg and Hayley Bennett had 13 and 10 points for South Park, which led by seven entering the fourth quarter.
Monessen 55, Frazier 40 – Na’Jaziah Carter (26 points) and Madison Johnson (24 points) accounted for all but five points for Monessen (5-12) in its nonsection win against Frazier (5-15). Chloe Harger had 12 points for Frazier while Malana Burton had 10.
Neshannock 60, Lincoln Park 21 – Payton Newman had a double-double with 15 points and 18 rebounds to lead Neshannock (18-2) to a nonsection win. Jaidon Nogay added 14 points and Ainsley Allison had 10 for the Lancers. Patty Weselowski led Lincoln Park (4-14) with 12 points.
North Allegheny 51, Indiana 39 – Vange Balouris hit six 3-pointers and finished with 23 points and Rosalia Varlotta added 19 points to send North Allegheny (8-10) to a nonsection win. Addy Hutton scored 13 and Emily Betsinger added 10 for Indiana (15-4).
Oakland Catholic 46, Erie 33 – Alayla Bivens scored 16 points to lead Oakland Catholic (16-3) past Erie in nonsection play. Aubrey Neavins scored 14 points for Erie.
Penn Hills 45, Serra Catholic 36 – Milani Oliver scored 20 points and Cara Crawford added 14 to power Penn Hills (3-15) to a nonsection victory. Abby Genes led Serra Catholic (12-7) with 19 points.
Boys basketball
Chartiers Valley 71, Peters Township 57 – Jayden Davis scored 38 points to become the 40th WPIAL boys basketball player to reach 2,000 points for his career, leading Chartiers Valley (17-3) to a nonsection victory. Julian Semplice added 18 points for the Colts. Dylan Donovan scored 22 for Peters Township (13-6).
Cheswick Christian Academy 66, Harvest Baptist Academy 31 – Junior Joseph Rosio scored 24 points, including a 3-pointer to make him the 10th Cheswick Christian player to hit 1,000 career points, as the Chargers (8-0) defeated Harvest Baptist Academy (4-5) to clinch the SWCAC Greater Pittsburgh Division. Brady Rochkind added 16 points and Keith Booth recorded 14 points. Josh Stambaugh scored eight for Harvest Baptist.
Eden Christian 62, Ellwood City 50 – Mason Dean hit for 33 points and James Wilkin added 11 to power Eden Christian (6-14) at the Win Palmer Memorial Classic. Aaron Lake scored 19 and Chris Smiley added 10 for Ellwood City (12-7).
Greensburg Central Catholic 74, Clairton 34 – Liam Gallagher sank four 3-pointers and scored 16 points as Greensburg Central Catholic (17-2, 11-0) defeated Clairton (7-9, 7-5) in Section 1-2A play. Brady O’Rourke added 12 points for Greensburg Central while Daniel Wachinski tallied 11 points. Taris Wooding led Clairton with 15 points.
Greensburg Salem 57, Geibel Catholic 50 – Tyler Martin scored 25 points to lead Greensburg Salem (5-14) to a nonsection win over Geibel Catholic (11-9). Braedon Leatherman added 11 points in the win. Evan Strimel scored 19 points for the Gators while Seth Dolan added 11.
Monessen 71, Carmichaels 40 – In nonsection play, Jay’veon Jeffries scored 11 points and Torry Williams and Kayden Kolbeck added 10 points each for Monessen (12-6). Chase Ankrom scored 15 points for Carmichaels (5-14).
Mt. Lebanon 64, Bethel Park 45 – Liam Sheely had 19 points and Sam Deibert had 16 as Mt. Lebanon (13-6) beat Bethel Park (7-12) in a nonsection game. Jazob Zaber added 12 points for Mt. Lebanon and Carter Gould chipped in 10. Jack Bruckner led Bethel Park with 11 points.
Nazareth Prep 26, Sewickley Academy 25 – Will Evans scored nine points to lead Nazareth Prep (15-4) past the host Panthers at the Win Palmer Memorial Classic. Mamadou Kane led Sewickley Academy (15-3) with eight points.
Neshannock 58, South Side 39 – David Kwiat hit seven 3-pointers on the way to scoring 26 points to lead Neshannock (16-2, 11-1) to a Section 4-3A win. Tony Perrotta added 16 points for Neshannock while Andrew Corfield led South Side (11-9, 5-7) with 16 points.
South Park 61, Ringgold 49 – Luke Scarff scored 24 points to lead South Park (14-5) to the nonsection win against Ringgold (4-13). Danny Battista hit four 3-pointers and added 16 points for South Park while Cooper Hochendoner picked up 15 points. Xavion Thomas paced Ringgold with 13 points while Szyair Dungee and Brayden Lomax added 10 each.
West Greene 57, Burgettstown 48 – Lane Allison went off for 35 points and Patrick Durbin added 10 for West Greene (11-7, 9-3) in a Section 3-2A win. Parker Rommes scored 17 and Sam Elich had 13 for Burgettstown (5-14, 2-10).
Girls wrestling
North Allegheny Invitational – Moon’s Haley Smarsh was named outstanding wrestler and a pair of teammates from both Kiski Area and Norwin claimed championships.
Smarsh defeated Plum’s Saphia Davis, 13-4, in the 130-pound finals.
Kiski Area’s Ava Golding defeated Connellsville’s Janayah Nobles, 4-1, in the 136-pound final and Alyssa Tresco pinned Upper St. Clair’s Grace Nasman at 142.
Norwin’s Jo Dollman pinned Pine Grove’s Eve Kurtz in 37 seconds in the 148-pound final and Karsyn Champion pinned Cumberland Valley’s Myah Mulgrew in the third period.
Plum’s Alaina Claassen also took a title, pinning Peters Township’s Liliana Giulianelli in the 190-pound final.
