High school roundup for Feb. 17, 2025: 15th-seeded Ringgold drops No. 2 Lincoln Park in Class 5A 1st-round stunner

Demetri Lowe scored 26 points and Dennis Hawkins added 20 as No. 15 Ringgold shocked No. 2 Lincoln Park, 79-77, in a WPIAL Class 5A boys basketball first-round matchup Tuesday night.

David Wachinski and Takeo Tolliver each scored 10 points for the Rams (15-9), who took a seven-point lead at halftime and fended off the Leopards (16-6) from there. Ringgold will meet No. 10 Hampton in the quarterfinals Friday.

Josh Pratt scored 25 points, Amaizen Straughters added 19 and Jeremiah Pratt finished with 12 for Lincoln Park.

Aliquippa 68, Sto-Rox 48 – Qa’lil Goode led with 18 points and DeJuan Hill followed with 15 to push No. 2 Aliquippa (15-6) to a Class 3A first-round win. Daluan Harris scored 13 points and Marcus Griffith had 11 for No. 15 Sto-Rox (7-15). Anthony Ingram added 10 points for the Quips, who will meet No. 7 Seton LaSalle in the quarterfinals Friday.

Chartiers Valley 61, Montour 48 – Julius Best scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures for top-seeded Chartiers Valley (20-2) in a Class 5A first-round win. Julian Semplice added 14, Danny Slizak 11 and Luca Federico 10 for the Colts, who will take on No. 9 Shaler in the quarterfinals Friday. Mark Carter scored 12 to lead No. 17 Montour (9-15).

Cheswick Christian Academy 77, First Baptist Christian 37 – Joseph Rosio had 26 points, 12 rebounds, seven assists and five steals to lead Cheswick Christian in the Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference quarterfinals. Rosio (1,651) passed Nate Davis (1,627) for third on the school’s all-time scoring list. Brady Rochkind added 16 points and Sam Kostick had 10 for the Chargers, who will face Plants and Pillars in the semifinals Thursday. Trace Daugherty led First Baptist Christian with 11 points.

Gateway 56, Indiana 50 (OT) – Mykel Bruce-McCrommon scored 23 points, leading No. 5 Gateway (16-7) to an overtime victory in the Class 5A first round. Jax Vovaris added 16 for the Gators, who will take on No. 4 Moon in the quarterfinals Friday. Aaron Webb scored 20 points to lead No. 12 Indiana (13-9).

Hampton 50, Peters Township 45 – Jonas Cupps scored 13 points and Zach Danner and Tanner Ohodnicki added 12 points apiece to lead No. 10 Hampton (14-7) to a Class 5A first-round win. Dylan Donovan scored 13 points and Lucas Saxe had 10 for No. 7 Peters Township (16-7). The Talbots will meet No. 15 Ringgold in the quarterfinals Friday.

Mohawk 74, Waynesburg 49 – Joey Nail led with 25 points and Bobby Fadden followed with 21 for top-seeded Mohawk (21-1) in a Class 3A first-round win. Cole Headlee scored 19 points and Jackson Dean had 13 for No. 16 Waynesburg (7-16). Drew Wrona added 14 points for the Warriors, who will meet No. 8 South Allegheny in the quarterfinals Friday.

Penn Hills 48, South Fayette 27 – Calix Clark scored 22 points and Amon Hawthorne added 13 to lead No. 6 Penn Hills (17-6) past No. 11 South Fayette (10-13) in a Class 5A first-round win. The Indians will meet No. 3 Thomas Jefferson in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Seton LaSalle 80, Charleroi 52 – Gabe Gizzi scored 18 points and Will Martin added 14 to power No. 7 Seton LaSalle (18-5) to a Class 3A first-round victory. The Rebels, who jumped out to a 23-8 lead after one quarter, will face No. 2 Aliquippa in the quarterfinals Friday. Jackson Keranko scored 13 points to lead No. 10 Charleroi (13-10).

Shady Side Academy 61, Bishop Canevin 48 – Kai Lambertson hit seven 3-pointers and finished with 32 points as No. 13 Shady Side Academy (9-14) pulled off the Class 3A first-round upset. Alex Demchak added 12 points for the Bulldogs, who will meet No. 5 Southmoreland in the quarterfinals Friday. Drew Allen scored 15 and Lamier Wade added 12 for No. 4 Bishop Canevin (13-9).

South Allegheny 52, Ellwood City 50 – Drew Cook scored 25 points and Jake Uher added 17 to lead No. 8 South Allegheny (14-8) to a Class 3A first-round win. Aaron Lake scored 20 points and Kaleb Servick had 15 for No. 9 Ellwood City (12-11). The Gladiators will face No. 1 Mohawk in the quarterfinals Friday.

South Park 58, Riverside 29 – Third-seeded South Park (19-3) defeated No. 14 Riverside (15-8) in the Class 3A first round and will meet No. 11 Ligonier Valley in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Girls basketball

Aliquippa 43, Beth-Center 34 – Sixth-seeded Aliquippa (15-7) defeated No. 11 Beth-Center (10-12) in the Class 2A first round and will face No. 3 Chartiers-Houston in Friday’s quarterfinals.

Burgettstown 39, Jeannette 35 – Paige Klodowski scored 15 points as No. 7 Burgettstown (17-6) held off No. 10 Jeannette (15-7) in the Class 2A first-round. Savanna Rush scored 11 points and Emilyn Harrison added 10 for the Blue Devils, who will meet No. 2 Winchester Thurston in the quarterfinals Friday. Navarah Smith scored 16 to lead the Jayhawks, who trailed by 16 heading into the fourth quarter.

Chartiers-Houston 70, South Side 16 – Ali Wingard scored 14 points, Ava Kolovich had 13 and Sophie Palone added 12 to lead No. 3 Chartiers-Houston (19-3) to a Class 2A first-round win over No. 14 South Side (9-13). The Buccaneers will face No. 6 Aliquippa in the quarterfinals Friday.

Laurel 41, California 21 – Jael Henderson scored 14 points to lead No. 9 Laurel (13-10) past No. 8 California (11-11) in a Class 2A first-round win. The Spartans will meet No. 1 Neshannock in the quarterfinals Friday.

Neshannock 76, Brentwood 16 – Payton Newman led with 22 points and Nina Medure followed with 16 for top-seeded Neshannock (19-3) in a Class 2A first-round win over No. 16 Brentwood (7-16). The Lancers will face No. 9 Laurel in the quarterfinals Friday.

Winchester Thurston 67, Bentworth 13 – DaShae Cochran scored 30 points and Jasmine Hollins contributed 22 as No. 2 Winchester Thurston (19-3) rolled to a Class 2A first-round win over No. 15 Bentworth (9-14). The Bears will meet No. 7 Burgettstown/No. 10 Jeannette in the quarterfinals Friday.

Hockey

Avonworth 9, Westmont Hilltop 2 – Cooper Powell and Austin Dzadovsky scored hat tricks, Brendan Hennigan and Linus Jesionowski each had a goal and two assists and Owen Stiers also scored to lead Avonworth (15-3-1) to a Class A win. Cullen Carlson and Brett Hoffman scored for Westmont Hilltop (2-16).

Beaver 8, Richland 5 – Sammy Mecchia had a hat trick and added an assist, Brady George scored twice and Jack Wilson and Roman Guido each had a goal and an assist to lead Beaver (8-11) to a Class A win. Xypher Zamias had two goals and two assists and Wesley Dunlap added a goal and an assist for Richland (2-17).

Bethel Park 6, Wheeling Park 0 – Caden Busch, Lukas Crisson, Lucas Bombich and Lochlan Kennedy each had a goal and an assist and Logan Colella made 19 saves to lead Bethel Park (12-5-1) to a Class 2A win over Wheeling Park (3-11-4). Sinjin Stainbrook and Owen Riether also scored in the win.

Bishop McCort 5, Cathedral Prep 1 – Zakhar Bryndin scored a hat trick and Mark Pazniak and Ben Cannizzaro each had a goal and an assist to lead Bishop McCort (10-9-1) to a Class 2A win. Chris Bruschi scored for Cathedral Prep (4-12-2).

Trinity 5, Knoch 1 – Seamus Coyle had two goals and an assist, Bobby Daddea and Henry Coyle each added a goal and an assist and Kory Taylor also scored to lead Trinity (11-7-1) to a Division 2 win. Synjun McHattie scored for Knoch (13-6).
