High school roundup for Feb. 20, 2025: North Catholic, Oakland Catholic girls win to set up semifinal showdown

Brady Wehner scored 18 points to lead No. 3 North Catholic to a 41-25 victory over No. 6 South Park in the WPIAL Class 4A girls basketball quarterfinals Thursday night.

The Trojanettes (21-3) broke open a close game with a 22-3 third quarter. Bella Stromberg led the Eagles (16-6) with nine points.

The win sets up a third meeting this season between North Catholic and No. 2 Oakland Catholic in Monday’s semifinals. North Catholic won the first meeting 42-34 Dec. 11. Oakland Catholic won the rematch, 39-37 on Jan. 29, to end the Trojanettes’ 112-game section winning streak.

Oakland Catholic 66, Central Valley 29 – Josie Fontana scored 16 points to lead No. 2 Oakland Catholic (21-3) past No. 7 Central Valley (15-8) in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Zephania Troxler-Scott added 12 points and London Creach had 10 for the Eagles.

Aquinas Academy 64, Serra Catholic 45 – Tess Duer poured in 27 points as No. 5 Aquinas Academy (15-7) used a 23-8 second quarter to pull away in its Class A quarterfinal win. Elliot Keverline (15) and Rebecca Guillen (12) combined for 27 points to help the Crusaders advance to take on No. 1 Union in the semifinals Monday. Bella Dumbroski had a team-high 20 points and Abby Genes added 10 for No. 4 Serra Catholic. (13-10).

Blackhawk 59, Laurel Highlands 32 – Aubree Hupp led No. 1 Blackhawk (22-2) with 27 points in the Class 4A quarterfinals. Andrea Kinger (13) and Mia Sheesley (12) combined for 25 for the Cougars, who will play No. 4 Elizabeth Forward on Monday in the semifinals. Miya Harris had 13 points and Ayrianna Sumpter scored 11 points for No. 8 Laurel Highlands (17-6).

Canon-McMillan 58, Butler 41 – Clair Madison scored 16 points in a Class 6A opening-round win for No. 4 Canon-McMillan (14-8). Sam Miller added 13 to help the Big Macs advance to the semifinals Tuesday. Cameryn Booher scored 12 points and Amelia McMichael and Avery Maier both had 10 for No. 5 Butler (11-11).

Elizabeth Forward 63, Beaver 52 – Mia Sostaric led a trio of double-digit scorers with 19 points for No. 4 Elizabeth Forward (19-5) in its Class 4A quarterfinal win. Chloe Zombek scored 13 points and Michelle Jellison had 11 points for the Warriors, who advanced to take on No. 1 Blackhawk in the semifinals Monday. Ava Wright (19) and Annsley Baker (17) combined for 36 for No. 5 Beaver (18-5)

Union 38, Bishop Canevin 16 – Miera Gunn led all scorers with 12 points as No. 1 Union (23-0) didn’t allow a second-half point in its Class A quarterfinal win. Kylie Fruehstorfer added eight points for the Scotties, who advance to take on No. 5 Aquinas Academy in the semifinals Monday.

Boys basketball

Neshannock 72, Northgate 64 (4OT) – David Kwiat hit six 3-pointers and finished with 27 points to lead No. 4 Neshannock (21-2) in a four-overtime marathon in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Talan Anderson added 18 points and Jake Rynd had 11 to help guide the Lancers to a matchup with No. 8 Union in Monday’s semifinals. Kadenne Kemp had a team-high 19 points for No. 5 Northgate (14-10). Des Williams scored 18 and Ty Daniels added 10.

New Castle 64, Butler 43 – Kai Cox scored 16 points as No. 2 New Castle (20-3) jumped out to a 15-3 lead after one quarter and cruised to a Class 6A quarterfinal win. Damian Harrison and Kyrell Harris each added 14 points for the Red Hurricanes, who will meet No. 6 Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals Monday. Stainton Forbes and Andrew Gettinger each scored 13 points for No. 7 Butler (16-7).

Sewickley Academy 48, Chartiers-Houston 39 – Lucas Grimsley hit five 3-pointers and finished with 17 points and Adam Ikamba added 11 points to power No. 2 Sewickley Academy (19-4) to a Class 2A quarterfinal win. The Panthers will meet No. 3 Jeannette in the semifinals Monday. Nate Gregory scored 23 points, including five 3-pointers, and Justus Buckingham added 10 points for No. 7 Chartiers-Houston (20-4).

Hockey

Avonworth 5, Indiana 2 – Jack Dolan scored twice, Cooper Powell added a goal and two assists, Jimmy Shields had a goal and an assist and Linus Jesionowski handed out four assists for Avonworth (15-3-2) in a Class A win. Gabe Nettleton and Jackson Albert scored for Indiana (9-7-4).

Armstrong 3, Baldwin 2 – Joshua Rullo, Jake Graff and Aiden Morando scored and Cole Ruffaner made 24 saves to lead Armstrong (9-10) to a Class 2A win. Austin Klein and Gabe Herrle scored and Austin Landosky made 37 saves for Baldwin (3-13-2).

Bishop Canevin 6, Central Valley 2 – Jack Misterka had two goals and an assist, Aidan Malay also scored twice, Brian Kalanish added a goal and two assists and Dom Ventura dished out four assists to lead Bishop Canevin (9-10) to a Division 2 victory. Mikey Crea and Caleb McQuaid scored for Central Valley (5-14).

Blackhawk 5, Beaver 4 (OT) – Bryce Leiper scored the overtime winner and added a pair of assists to lead Blackhawk (10-9-1) to a Class A win. Grant Shroads had two goals and two assists and Daniel Ostrom and Dante Unen also scored for Blackhawk. Sammy Mecchi had a hat trick and added an assist and Colin Justice also scored for Beaver (4-13-3).

Carrick 6, Trinity 2 – Ethan Semenov had two goals and an assist and Drew Bird also scored twice to power Carrick (9-7-3) to a Division 2 win. Collin Clegg and Chris Topassi also scored for Carrick. Zachary Jibits and Seamus Coyle had goals for Trinity (5-12-1).

Cathedral Prep 4, Hempfield 1 – Ethan Cunningham scored twice and Tucker Kinnear had a goal and an assist to lead Cathedral Prep in Class 2A. Chris Bruschi also scored and Ian Brown made 29 saves for Cathedral Prep (15-4). Jonny Holtzman scored for Hempfield (8-10-1).

Deer Lakes 12, Knoch 4 – Ryan Grunden collected four goals and two assists and Mason Cervone racked up four goals and one assist to lead Deer Lakes in Division 2. Max Redinger had two goals and two assists, Blake Toback also scored twice and Austin Veri dished out four assists for Deer Lakes (13-4-1). Nick Olshanski scored twice and Bryce Davis and Brayden Kanuss also scored for Knoch (7-10-2)

Latrobe 6, Norwin 2 – Joey Crimboli collected two goals and an assist, Preston Miller added a goal and an assist and Jaxson Kettering and Dylan Morris and Jackson Hayburn also scored for Latrobe (14-5) in a Class 2A win. Mitch Soltysiak and Colin Czekaj scored for Norwin (1-17-1).

North Hills 5, Freeport 3 – Jonathan Trosky scored a hat trick and Thomas Rowse and Devin McBride added goals to send North Hills (12-8) to a Class A win. Bantam Semenko scored twice and Jacob Miller added a goal for Freeport (4-15-1).

Ringgold 10, Wilmington 2 – Landon Vaccaro and Matt Sylvester each scored twice and Brady Lippert had a goal and an assist to lead Ringgold (11-8) to a Division 2 win. Nick Mahalko had three assists. Alex Rodgers and Justin Girman scored for Wilmington (2-16-1).

Shaler 4, Montour 2 – Matthew Stelitano scored twice, Jacob Skerlong added the go-ahead goal and an assist and Bradyn Whiteman also scored to help Shaler (16-3-1) to a Class A win. Trey Varga had a goal and an assist and Cole Dallas scored for Montour (14-6).

Wheeling Park 4, West Allegheny 3 – Landon Szazynski (1-1) and Cooper Abraham (1-1) each had two points to lead Wheeling Park (13-5-2) to a Class A win. Kaden Schnarr and Brody Davis each had a goal. Austin Falick (1-1), Branden Switalski and Cole Milburn had the goals for West Allegheny (8-12-0).
