High school roundup for Feb. 20, 2026: Defending champ South Allegheny knocks off top seed Mohawk in 3A thriller

Defending WPIAL champion South Allegheny knocked off top seed Mohawk, 64-63, in a Class 3A quarterfinal thriller Friday night.

Mohawk’s Bobby Fadden, who led all scorers with 33 points, made a steal and scored a three-point play with 32 seconds left to give the Warriors a 63-62 lead.

Drew Cook, who led South Allegheny with 20 points, scored on the putback of a partially blocked Jake Uher dunk attempt with six seconds left to make it 64-63.

Alijah Cook scored 17 points and Uher had 15 for the Gladiators (15-8), the defending WPIAL champs who struggled to find their footing at times this season and came in as the No. 8 seed with eight losses. South Allegheny will meet No. 13 Shady Side Academy in the semifinals Tuesday.

Joey Nail added 14 points for Mohawk (21-2).

Hampton 48, Ringgold 47 – Luca Romero-Lauro scored 11 points, including the game-winning free throw with 17 seconds left, as No. 10 Hampton (15-7) defeated No. 15 Ringgold (15-10) in the upset-heavy top-right corner of the Class 5A bracket. Jonas Cupps scored 13 points and Zach Danner had 11 for the Talbots, who will face No. 3 Thomas Jefferson in the semifinals Tuesday. Demetri Lowe scored 20 points for the Rams.

Aliquippa 50, Seton LaSalle 33 – Second-seeded Aliquippa (16-6) defeated No. 7 Seton LaSalle (18-6) in the Class 3A quarterfinals. The Quips will meet No. 3 South Park in the semifinals Tuesday.

Girls basketball

Chartiers-Houston 52, Aliquippa 44 – MacKenzie Walsh scored 20 points and Ali Wingard finished with 13 as No. 4 Chartiers-Houston (20-3) dethroned the defending champs in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Denim Odom scored 19 to lead No. 6 Aliquippa (15-8). The Bucs will face No. 2 Winchester Thurston in Tuesday’s semifinals.

Neshannock 67, Laurel 29 – Payton Newman had a double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds as top-seeded Neshannock (20-3) rolled in the Class 2A quarterfinals. Maddie Arrow added 16 and Sophia Bonner had 10 for the Lancers, who will take on No. 5 Rochester in the semifinals Tuesday. Callie Baker scored nine to lead No. 9 Laurel (13-11).

Rochester 47, Fort Cherry 39 – Kamryn Newman scored 19 points and Tia Yellock added 15 to lead No. 5 Rochester (14-9) past No. 4 Fort Cherry (17-6) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The Rams, who will meet top-seeded Neshannock in the semifinals Tuesday, took control with a 14-3 advantage in the third quarter. Brooke Cornali scored 15 points to lead the Rangers.

Seneca Valley 31, Pine-Richland 29 – Natalie Hambly scored 13 points, including the game-winning free throws with 3.2 seconds left, to lead No 5 Seneca Valley (14-6) past No. 4 Pine-Richland (15-8) in the Class 6A quarterfinals. Makayla Canty added 10 points for the Raiders, who will take on No. 1 Canon-McMillan in the semifinals Tuesday.

Winchester Thurston 59, Burgettstown 20 – Jasmine Hollins scored 25 points and DaShae Cochran followed with 19 to power No. 2 Winchester Thurston (20-3) past No. 7 Burgettstown (17-7) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The Bears will meet No. 3 Chartiers-Houston in the semifinals Tuesday.

Consolation

Baldwin 49, Trinity 38 – Lynsey Bernotas scored 11 points and Kelsey Meyer chipped in 10 as No. 4 Baldwin (20-5) won in the Class 5A consolation bracket. Sutton Williamson and Gabby Humphreys each scored seven for No. 9 Trinity (17-8). Baldwin will play Indiana for fifth place and Trinity will meet Fox Chapel for seventh place on Tuesday. The top eight teams advance to states.

Indiana 49, Fox Chapel 28 – Addy Hutton scored 17 points and Laken Kugler added 11 as No. 3 Indiana (21-4) defeated No. 7 Fox Chapel (15-10) in a Class 5A consolation game. Nine Kulikowski led the Foxes with nine points. Indiana (21-4) will face No. 4 Baldwin for fifth place Tuesday while Fox Chapel will meet No. 9 Trinity for seventh place. The consolation bracket merely determines seeds for the state tournament as the top eight finishers all qualify.

Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 68, Waynesburg 51 – Rowan Winter scored 18 points to lead four players in double figures for No. 6 OLSH (19-7) in a Class 3A consolation game. Leah Parker added 14, Lola Garner had 11 and Shae Trombetta chipped in 10 for the Chargers, who will face Quaker Valley for fifth place on Monday. The top six teams make states. Emma Blair scored 15, Addison Cowell had 13 and Tess Pauley scored 10 for No. 7 Waynesburg (21-4).

Quaker Valley 54, Avonworth 35 – Mimi Thiero scored 29 points to become Quaker Valley’s all-time leading scorer, boys or girls, with 1,980 career points, in a Class 3A consolation victory for the No. 4 Quakers (18-7). Keira Watson added 16 points for Quaker Valley, which will meet OLSH for fifth place on Monday. The top six teams advance to states. Bria Onyshko scored 13 points and Natalie Frank and Julia Nardozzi each added 10 for No. 8 Avonworth (12-13).
