High school roundup for Feb. 21, 2025: Peters Township beats Uniontown for another Class 5A upset

Jake Wetzel scored 18 points as No. 6 Peters Township kept the upsets coming in the WPIAL Class 5A boys basketball bracket Friday night with a 56-52 quarterfinal win over No. 3 Uniontown.
Sean Thelk and Dylan Donovan scored 12 points apiece for Peters (17-7), which will meet No. 10 Mars in the semifinals Tuesday. Calvin Winfrey scored 18 points, Isaac Ellsworth added 14 and Kelan Milsom had 11 for the Red Raiders (20-4).
Aliquippa 71, Shady Side Academy 49 – Top-seeded Aliquippa (19-4) rolled past No. 9 Shady Side Academy (10-13) in the Class 3A quarterfinals, earning a date in the semifinals with No. 4 Bishop Canevin on Tuesday.
South Allegheny 77, Ellwood City 34 – Drew Cook scored 27 points and Cam Epps and Josh Jackowski added 13 each to help No 2 South Allegheny (21-3) to a Class 3A quarterfinal victory. The Gladiators will meet No. 3 Mohawk in the semifinals Tuesday. Aaron Lake led No. 10 Ellwood City (14-10) with 12 points.
Girls basketball
Aliquippa 56, Rochester 25 – Carla Brown scored 20 points to lead No. 2 Aliquippa (18-4) past No. 10 Rochester (10-13) in the Class 2A quarterfinals. The Quips will take on No. 3 Winchester Thurston in the semifinals Tuesday.
Mt. Lebanon 47, Seneca Valley 45 (OT) – Cali Green hit for 19 points and Payton Collins added 12 to lead No. 6 Mt. Lebanon (14-9) to a Class 3A quarterfinal victory. The Blue Devils will take on No. 2 Upper St. Clair in the semifinals Tuesday. Gracie Cato scored 16 and Natalie Hambly added 13 for No. 3 Seneca Valley (15-7).
Neshannock 66, Laurel 40 – Payton Newman scored 28 points and top-seeded Neshannock (22-2) scored 37 points in the first quarter of a Class 2A quarterfinal victory. Ainsley Allison and Nina Medure added nine points each for the Lancers, who will meet No. 4 South Side in the semifinals Tuesday. Maelee Hill scored 10 points and Shyan Tindall added nine for No. 8 Laurel (10-14).
South Side 45, Fort Cherry 32 – Freshman Ariel Poelchor scored 14 points to lead No. 4 South Side (19-5) to a Class 2A quarterfinal win over No. 5 Fort Cherry (19-4). Bailey Strnisa and Ashtyn Michael added 11 points each for the Rams, who will face No. 1 Neshannock in the semifinals Tuesday. Gianna Bianchini and Allison Litman scored eight points apiece for the Rangers.
Upper St. Clair 43, Pine-Richland 22 – Rylee Kalocay scored 22 points and No. 2 Upper St. Clair (17-6) used a 15-3 second quarter to pull away in a Class 6A quarterfinal. The Panthers will face No. 6 Mt. Lebanon in the semifinals Tuesday. Cate Gentile led No. 7 Pine-Richland (7-16) with seven points.
Winchester Thurston 40, Chartiers-Houston 27 – Sky Still and DaShae Cochran scored 12 points apiece to lead No. 3 Winchester Thurston (20-3) to a Class 2A quarterfinal win. Still hit three 3-pointers for the Bears, who will meet No. 2 Aliquippa in the semifinals Tuesday. Ella Richey led No. 6 Chartiers-Houston (19-5) with nine points.
Consolation games
Avonworth 56, Quaker Valley 51 – Greta O’Brien scored 21 points to tie Kelli Costa atop the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,589 career points as No. 6 Avonworth (17-8) won a Class 3A consolation game to clinch a spot in the PIAA tournament. Emma Obersteiner scored a career-high 26 points for the Antelopes, who will meet No. 4 Keystone Oaks for fifth place at a time, date and site to be determined. Junior Mimi Thiero scored 28 points for No. 7 Quaker Valley (14-10) to move into third place on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,248 points.
Baldwin 48, Bethel Park 42 – Julianne Ott and Lynsey Bernotas scored 14 points apiece to lead No. 9 Baldwin (16-9) in a Class 5A consolation game. Sadie Orie scored 16 points and Ella Sabatos added 13 for No. 12 Bethel Park (12-13). The Highlanders will meet No. 3 Penn-Trafford for fifth place at a time, date and site to be determined.
Keystone Oaks 48, Riverside 44 – Laney Wagner scored 15 points and Hannah York added 11 to send No. 4 Keystone Oaks (20-3) to a Class 3A consolation win. Emma Meyer scored 22 points to lead No. 8 Riverside (15-10). The Golden Eagles will meet No. 6 Avonworth in the fifth-place game at a time, date and site to be determined.
Penn-Trafford 42, Indiana 26 – Torrie DeStefano scored 16 points as No. 3 Penn-Trafford (24-1) bounced back from its first loss of the season to win a Class 5A consolation game. Julia Antonacci led No. 7 Indiana (18-7) with nine points. The Warriors will face No. 9 Baldwin for fifth place at a date, time and place to be determined.
