High school roundup for Feb. 27, 2025: Canon-McMillan girls claim spot in state tournament

Madison Clair scored 18 points to lead No. 4 Canon-McMillan to a 36-34 victory over No. 6 Mt. Lebanon in the Class 6A girls basketball third-place game Thursday night, claiming the WPIAL’s third and final spot in the PIAA playoffs.

Faye Saunders added 10 points for the Big Macs (15-9). Elizabeth Twyman scored 11 for the Blue Devils (14-11).

Winchester Thurston 62, South Side 43 – Sky Still scored 20 points to lead five players in double figures for No. 3 Winchester Thurston (21-4) in the Class 2A third-place game. DaShae Cochran added 12 points and Alexis Bansah, Jasmine Hollins and Aleah Cooper each chipped in 10. Bailey Strnisa scored 15 and Ashtyn Michael added 14 for No. South Side (19-7). Both teams advance to states.

Boys basketball

Mohawk 70, Bishop Canevin 64 – Bobby Fadden went off for 35 points, hitting four 3-pointers, Joey Nail added 17 points and Drew Wrona had 15 as No. 3 Mohawk (20-6) won the Class 3A third-place game. Lamier Wade scored 29 points and Drew Allen had 11 for No. 4 Bishop Canevin (15-11). Both teams made the state playoffs.

Montour 81, Mars 72 – Colton Straight hit for 33 points and Kaleb Platz and Ama Sow added 15 points apiece to lead No. 1 Montour (24-2) in the Class 5A third-place game. AJ Alston chipped in 10 for the Spartans. Drew Navetta scored 21 points, Will Wilson finished with 13 and Austen Wroblewski contributed 10 for No. 10 Mars (14-12). Both teams made the state playoffs.

Hockey

Bishop McCort 4, Fox Chapel 3 – Mikaels Vasilevskis had two goals and an assist, Isaiah Lieb added a goal and an assist and Sammy Treager also scored as Bishop McCort (9-10-1) knocked off Fox Chapel (16-3-1) in Class 2A. Dominic Casile had a goal and two assists and Hayden Ferra added a goal and an assist for Fox Chapel.

Central Catholic 3, Seneca Valley 2 – Griffin Lewis netted a pair of third-period goals, Chris Sargo also scored and Ben Balla made 28 saves to lead Central Catholic (9-8-3) to a Class 3A win. John Nikolajski scored twice for Seneca Valley (15-5).

Deer Lakes 10, Central Valley 1 – Ryan Grunden collected three goals and two assists and Mason Cervone, Max Redinger and Austin Veri each scored twice to lead Deer Lakes (15-4-1) in Division 2. Jacob Bradley dished out four assists. Logan Sullivan scored for Central Valley (5-15).

Elizabeth Forward 6, Neshannock 5 (OT) – Bobby Boord Jr. scored the overtime winner and added three assists to lead Elizabeth Forward (12-8) to a Division 2 win. Blacke Hvozdik scored twice and Patrick Malanda had a goal and an assist. Sam Mezzanotte and Will Kinchloe each had a goal and an assist for Neshannock (13-3-5).

Hempfield 7, Baldwin 2 – Guerin Gardner and Giulio DiPietro each had a goal and an assist and Nino DiPietro handed out three assists to lead Hempfield (9-10-1) to a Class 2A win. Mats Martz, Colby Herron, JJ Williams, Nick Crupie and Andrew Bryant also scored for Hempfield. Gabe Herrle had a goal and an assist for Baldwin (4-14-2).

Latrobe 6, Armstrong 1 – Jackson Hayburn had two goals and an assist, Preston Miller added a goal and two assists and Adam Pellis finished with a goal and an assist to help Latrobe (15-5) to a Class 2A win. Jason Rullo scored for Armstrong (9-11).

Peters Township 5, Bethel Park 2 – Troy Jones had two goals and an assist and Luca Marietta added a goal and two assists to help Peters Township (8-10-2) to a Class 3A victory. Erik Husa had a goal and an assist for Bethel Park (5-15).

Pine-Richland 4, Franklin Regional 2 – Carson Verszyla scored twice and Josh Lanyard added a goal and an assist for Pine-Richland (8-10-2) in a Class 3A. Grant Williams and Ryan Crouse scored for Franklin Regional (8-11-1).

Trinity 5, Bishop Canevin 4 (OT) – Seamus Coyle completed his hat trick with the overtime winner and Zachery Jibits scored twice to lead Trinity (6-13-1) to a Division 2 win. Brian Kalanish had two goals and an assist for Bishop Canevin (9-10-1).

Upper St. Clair 2, North Allegheny 0 – Eli Rankin and Nico Galardini scored and Owen Laurent made 22 saves to lead Upper St. Clair (10-9-1) to a Class 3A win. Cam Junker made 21 saves for North Allegheny (12-8).
