High school roundup for Feb. 4, 2019: Mars girls top Armstrong in overtime

Tai Johnson had 20 points, and Alex Johnson had 13 points, including four free throws in overtime, to lift Mars to a 49-41 victory over Armstrong in a Section 2-5A girls basketball game Monday night.

Emma Coffield added 10 points for the Fightin’ Planets (14-5, 7-4) in the senior night win.

North Allegheny 60, Butler 22 — Lizzy Groetsch had 15 points, and Rachel Martindale added 10 as No. 3 North Allegheny (19-1, 12-1) won in Section 1-6A.

Bethel Park 63, Canon-McMillan 41 — Maddie Dziezgowski had 24 points as No. 4 Bethel Park (17-2, 10-2) won in Section 2-6A.

Upper St. Clair 52, Connellsville 30 — Lindsay Meyer had 15 points to pace Upper St. Clair (10-10, 7-6) in a Section 2-6A win. The Panthers held a 29-12 advantage in the second half.

West Allegheny 48, South Fayette 41 — Hannah Lindemuth had 12 points and surpassed 1,000 for her career as West Allegheny (10-9, 5-7) won in Section 1-5A. Patience Ashaolu had 16 points for the Indians.

Blackhawk 72, Ambridge 50 — Mady Aulbach had 26 points, and Mackenzie Amalia had 18 as No. 3 Blackhawk (15-3, 10-1) won in Section 2-4A. Both players had four 3-pointers.

Central Valley 49, Quaker Valley 37 – Kaelyn Underwood had 14 points as No. 2 Central Valley (17-1, 10-1) won in Section 2-4A.

McKeesport 61, Ringgold 38 — Laila Taylor scored 21 points as McKeesport (11-7, 9-4) won in Section 3-4A.

McGuffey 47, Waynesburg 44 — Led by Abby Donnelly’s 15 points, McGuffey (8-11, 5-7) captured a Section 2-3A victory.

Shady Side Academy 64, East Allegheny 41 — Arianna Goitz had 31 points, including seven 3-pointers, as No. 2 Shady Side Academy (16-1, 12-0) won in Section 3-3A. Amaia Johnson had 21 points for East Allegheny (12-7, 7-6).

Laurel 76, New Brighton 18 — Caroline Gibson netted 42 points as No. 4 Laurel (16-4, 12-1) won in Section 1-2A.

Bishop Canevin 68, Fort Cherry 13 — The No. 1 Crusaders opened a 28-2 lead en route to a Section 3-2A win. Gillan Gustine had 19 points to lead Bishop Canevin (18-2, 11-0).

Shamyjha Price had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Diajha Allen tallied 17 points and 10 steals.

Norwin 55, Shaler 28 — Olivia Gribble had 22 points as No. 2 Norwin (18-1, 11-1) rolled to a Section 1-6A win. The Knights opened the game on a 19-2 run.

Hempfield 46, Baldwin 41 — Sarah Liberatore had 17 points to guide Hempfield (9-11, 3-10) to a Section 2-6A win.

Franklin Regional 46, Hampton 33 — Jordan Yaniga had 16 points, and Alex Reitz added 14 as No. 5 Franklin Regional (15-4, 9-2) secured a Section 2-5A victory. The Panthers opened with a 22-5 lead.

Penn-Trafford 84, Laurel Highlands 39 — Bella Long had 23 points, and Mackenzie Powell added 16 as Penn-Trafford (11-9, 7-5) captured a Section 3-5A victory. The Warriors pulled away with a 29-9 run in the second quarter.

Woodland Hills 64, Latrobe 49 — Peyton Pinkney had 20 points to guide Woodland Hills (11-8, 9-3) to a Section 3-5A win. Carly Augustine had 18 points for Latrobe (11-6, 7-5), which was outscored 19-7 in the third quarter.

Belle Vernon 46, Southmoreland 44 (OT) — Lindsay Steeber had 23 points as the host Leopards (13-8, 9-4) won a Section 3-4A game in overtime. Bailey Kuhns had 16 points, and Maggie Moore added 15 for Southmoreland (16-4, 10-3).

Elizabeth Forward 59, Yough 19 — Bri Spirnak had 25 points as Elizabeth Forward (14-5, 12-1) rolled to a Section 3-4A win. Jordan Pater scored eight points for Yough (3-16, 0-12), which trailed 29-7 at halftime.

Deer Lakes 44, Derry 43 — Anna Solomon scored 28 points, including six 3-pointers, as Deer Lakes (15-4, 10-3) earned a Section 3-3A win. Destiny Roberts scored 10 points for Derry (7-11, 5-7).

Monessen 59, Jefferson-Morgan 33 — Kendelle Weston had 22 points as Monessen (6-13, 5-6) won in Section 2-A.

Greensburg Central Catholic 49, Clairton 41 — Bella Skatell had 22 points, including five 3-pointers, as No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic (17-2, 9-0) won in Section 3-A. Anna Eisaman had 11 points, and Melina Maietta added 10 for the Centurions, who made 10 of 13 free throws.

Apollo-Ridge 49, Highlands 22 — Apollo-Ridge is getting closer to a WPIAL playoff berth.

Morgan Gamble scored a game-high 14 points, leading Apollo-Ridge to a Section 1-4A win.

The Vikings (15-5, 7-5) moved ahead of Knoch, which lost to Freeport, for sole possession of third place in the section with two games remaining. They held Highlands to single-digit point totals in all four quarters.

Sarah Sawhook scored eight points for Highlands (2-17, 0-13).

North Catholic 93, Burrell 40 — Tess Myers (14 points) and Dani Short (20 points) each surpassed 1,000 points for their career for Class 4A No. 1 North Catholic (18-2, 13-0) in a Section 1 victory. Allison Fisher led Burrell (4-13, 2-10) with 16 points and Kaylen Sharrow scored 10.

Seneca Valley 56, Fox Chapel 42 — Fox Chapel trailed 19-4 at the end of the first quarter and couldn’t overcome a slow start in a Section 1-6A loss to Seneca Valley. Gabby Guerrieri scored 19 points for the Foxes (13-6, 8-5). McKenna Gross led Seneca Valley (14-6, 8-5) with 14 points.

Serra Catholic 39, Riverview 29 — No. 3 Serra Catholic took a 20-10 lead into halftime and cruised to a Section 2-2A win over Riverview. Gigi Mele-Madiquan scored nine points to lead Serra Catholic (14-4, 9-1). Francesca Lio scored 10 points for Riverview (7-11, 5-6).

Boys basketball

Seton LaSalle 65, Fort Cherry 32 — Michael Bigley had 15 points, and Jake Verner added 14 as No. 4 Seton LaSalle (14-3, 9-1) won in Section 2-3A.

West Greene 67, Mapletown 38 — Joey Reed had 17 points, and Nathan Brudnock added 15 as West Greene (6-11, 4-6) won in Section 2-A.

Clairton 58, West Mifflin 57 — Andress Wiggins and Leonard Robinson each scored 13 points, and Kenlein Ogletree had 14 rebounds to lift Clairton (7-8) to a nonsection victory.

Serra Catholic 78, Summit Academy 53 — Jimmy Moon had 33 points and 19 rebounds, and Khalil Smith added 23 points as Class 2A No. 2 Serra Catholic (15-3) won a nonsection game.

Latrobe 59, Norwin 57 — Bryce Butler scored 27 points, and Ryan Sickenberger had 18 for the No. 1-ranked Wildcats (16-2, 9-0), who have won three of their past five Section 3-5A games by one or two points.

With the win, Latrobe clinched the outright section title.

Jayden Walker had 18 points, and Gianni Rizzo added 14 for Norwin (8-10, 1-8), which missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

Knoch 78, Derry 61 — Jared Schrecengost had 20 points to lead Knoch (13-5, 7-1) to a Section 1-4A victory over Derry (12-5, 5-3). John Kerr had 19 points for Derry.

Washington 43, Southmoreland 35 — Ian Bredniak’s 11 points led Washington (11-7, 9-1) to a win in Section 4-3A. Riley Comforti had 13 points for the Scotties (11-8, 6-4).

Woodland Hills 64, Hempfield 55 — In a nonsection game, Keandre Bowles had 33 points to lead Class 5A No. 5 Woodland Hills (16-4) to victory. Christian Zilli had 18 points for Hempfield (9-11).

Boys basketball

Riverview 56, Trinity Christian 27 — Riverview shut out Trinity Christian, 22-0, in the first quarter en route to snapping a five-game losing streak with a nonsection victory . Thanny Black had 19 points for the Raiders (7-11) and Aiden Sebastian scored 12. Ben Blackburn had eight points for Trinity Christian (3-12).

Steel Valley 62, Deer Lakes 50 — Class 3A No. 5 Deer Lakes was outscored 36-24 over the final two quarters and saw its bid for a undefeated Section 3 season come to an end with a loss at Steel Valley (12-7, 8-3). Jack Hollibaugh led the Lancers (13-5, 9-1) with 16 points, Brad Perrotte added 14 points and Zac Herbinko scored 11. Kameron Williams had 20 points for Steel Valley, Camden Polak scored 16 and Andre Hoye added 11.

Mars 61, Plum 51 — Plum outscored or tied Class 5 No. 1 Mars in three of four quarters, but a 24-11 margin for the Planets in the the second was enough to propel them to victory. Connor Moss had 20 points for the Mustangs (4-15, 4-8) and Lamar Whiting scored 16. Khori Fusco scored a game-high 22 points for Mars (19-1, 12-0) and Andrew Recchia added 16 points.

Hockey

Burrell 11, Knoch 2 — Tyler Stewart recorded a hat trick and four assists as Burrell won in PIHL Division II play. Dylan Zelonka had two goals and four assists, and Logan Schoepf added two goals for Burrell (18-0). Caleb Miller and Christopher Miller scored one goal each for Knoch (5-12).

North Hills 5, Deer Lakes 3 — Shane Miller, Christopher Rudy and Cameron Miller scored a goal apiece, but Deer Lakes (2-13-1) fell to North Hills (11-5) in PIHL Class A action.

Westmont Hilltop 8, Kiski Area 4 – Hunter Partsch scored four goals as Westmont Hilltop defeated Kiski Area in PIHL Class A play. Ryan Welsh had a hat trick for Kiski Area (1-15).

Franklin Regional 5, Plum 2 — Trent Lunden scored two goals as Franklin Regional (9-6) defeated Plum in PIHL Class AA action. Anthony Adamski and Logan Schlegel scored one goal each for Plum (3-11).
