High school roundup for Feb. 7, 2019: No. 4 Bethel Park locks up 2nd in Section 2-6A

Four players reached double figures to spark the No. 4 Bethel Park girls basketball team to a 68-39 Section 2-6A win Thursday night at Baldwin.
Olivia Westphal, a 5-foot-9 sophomore guard, clicked for a game-high 22 points and was complemented by 5-11 junior guard Madelyn Dzierzgowski with 18 points.
Senior point guard Maria Cerro and freshman guard Emma Dzierzgowski chipped in with 10 points apiece.
For Baldwin, Lexi Bernotas, a sophomore guard, and Kayla Radomsky, a sophomore forward, finished with 13 and 12 points.
The Black Hawks (18-2, 11-2) clinched second place in Section 2-6A with the victory, the team’s 10th in its past 11 games.
They have lost only to section champion and top-ranked Peters Township (21-0, 14-0) this season.
Baldwin dropped to 8-13 and 3-11 with its eighth loss in its past nine contests.
The Highlanders cut into a 33-24 halftime deficit against the visitors to make it a six-point game early in the third quarter.
But the BP girls went on a 14-2 run at the end of the quarter to secure a 51-33 advantage.
Hempfield 61, Connellsville 46 — Sarah Liberatore had 22 points to guide Hempfield (10-11, 4-10) to a Section 2-6A victory. Jessica Persin had 15 points, and Emma Hoffner added 11 for the Spartans, who outscored Connellsville (5-15, 1-12), 25-14 in the first half.
Mt. Lebanon 63, Upper St. Clair 34 — Jamey Napoleon had 15 points to lead Mt. Lebanon (11-10, 10-4) to a Section 2-6A win.
Shaler 39, Pine-Richland 36 — Emily Cavacini scored 14 points as Shaler (7-14, 5-9) won a Section 1-6A contest. The Titans opened a 19-2 lead before the Rams rallied.
Albert Gallatin 51, Laurel Highlands 46 — Bryn Bezjak had 27 points as Albert Gallatin (7-11, 4-9) won in Section 2-5A.
Oakland Catholic 79, Uniontown 35 — Jayde Boyd scored 21 points to lift No. 2 Oakland Catholic (19-2, 13-1) to a Section 3-5A triumph. The Eagles led 29-5 in the first quarter.
Blackhawk 84, New Castle 47 — No. 3 Blackhawk (17-3, 11-1) opened a 38-8 lead and rolled to a Section 2-4A win. Mackenzie Amalia had 20 points, and Mady Aulbach added 19 for the Cougars.
Belle Vernon 64, Elizabeth Forward 52 — Rachel Wobrak had 23 points, and Lindsay Steeber scored 20 as the Leopards defeated section champion Elizabeth Forward in Section 3-4A.
Grace Henderson added 12 points for Belle Vernon (14-8, 10-4), which also defeated section runner-up Southmoreland on Monday.
Bri Spirnak had 12 points for the Warriors (14-6, 12-2).
Southmoreland 57, Mt. Pleasant 34 — On senior night, Navy recruit Maggie Moore had 16 points and 12 rebounds as Southmoreland (17-4, 11-3) recorded a Section 3-4A win. Bailey Kuhns led the Scotties with 17 points.
Chloe Jaworski tallied 11 points for Mt. Pleasant (5-16, 3-11).
Ringgold 62, Yough 32 — Led by Faith Martin’s 21 points, Ringgold (5-15, 3-11) won a Section 3-4A game. Jordan Pater had 13 points for Yough (3-18, 0-14).
Avonworth 69, Freedom 37 — Hayden Robinson had 22 points and 23 rebounds as No. 5 Avonworth (14-6, 11-3) won in Section 1-3A.
Washington 71, McGuffey 47 — Carly Allen scored 28 points as Washington (17-4, 12-2) won in Section 2-3A.
Carlynton 60, Steel Valley 38 — Jada Lee scored 18 points to lead No. 3 Carlynton (18-2, 12-2) to a Section 3-3A victory.
Derry 62, Valley 38 — Derry (9-11, 7-7) opened a 21-8 lead in the first quarter and rolled to a victory in the section 3-3A finale.
East Allegheny 49, South Allegheny 32 — Abby Henderson had 22 points to guide East Allegheny (14-7, 8-6) to a win in Section 3-3A.
Laurel 76, Shenango 28 — In Section 1-2A, Caroline Gibson had 29 points to lead No. 4 Laurel (17-4, 13-1) to the first section title in program history.
OLSH 63, South Side 29 — Maddie Hoff and Ashley Norling each had 24 points as No. 5 OLSH (16-4, 13-1) won in Section 1-2A.
Serra Catholic 54, Jeannette 33 — Rayna Andrews had 12 points and a school-record 26 rebounds as No. 3 Serra Catholic (15-4, 10-1) won in Section 2-2A. The Eagles clinched at least a share of the section title. Dymond Crawford scored 21 points and had 10 rebounds for Jeannette (4-16, 2-9).
West Greene 57, Avella 37 — Madison Lampe had 18 points to lead No. 1 West Greene (20-2, 12-0) to its 33rd straight section victory and third straight Section 2-A title.
Riverview 55, Springdale 10 — Riverview got stingy and punched its postseason ticket.
The Raiders shut out rival Springdale in three of four quarters, rolling to a Section 2-2A win.
Riverview (9-11, 6-6) finished in a three-way tie with Ellis School and Winchester Thurston for third place in the section. The teams all split with each other this season, so all three qualify for the WPIAL playoffs.
Olivia Watts scored nine points to lead a balanced scoring effort for Riverview; Tenaeja Sheffey, Sydney McDonough and Francesca Lio scored eight points apiece. The Raiders blanked Springdale in the first, third and fourth quarters.
Burrell 68, Highlands 38 —Hope Clark and Kaylen Sharrow each had double-doubles and scored 18 points apiece to help Burrell (5-14, 3-11) score a Section 1-4A win. Sharrow had 15 rebounds and Clark chipped in 14 rebounds. Grace Omecinski scored 16 points for the Bucs. Sarah Sawhook led Highlands (2-19, 0-14) with 12 points.
Freeport 46, Indiana 42 — The Yellowjackets survived Indiana’s fourth-quarter run to pick up the Section 1-4A win. Sidney Shemanski scored a game-high 19 points and Maddie Clark chipped in with 14 for No. 4 Freeport (16-4, 11-2). Hope Clark led Indiana (8-14, 6-8) with 18 points.
Leechburg 39, Propel Andrew Street 25 — Kat Yurjevich led a balanced effort for Leechburg (7-11, 4-6) with nine points in a Section 3-A win. Maddie Ancosky scored eight points for the Blue Devils and Aubrey Skeel and Kristen Knapp scored seven points apiece. Keeley Brockington had a game-high 12 points for Propel Andrew Street (5-14, 1-9).
Shady Side Academy 41, Deer Lakes 38 (OT) — Ariana Goitz scored all eight of Shady Side Academy’s points in overtime, finishing with a game-high 21, as the Class 3A No. 2 Indians (17-2, 13-1) held on for a Section 3-3A win. Anna Solomon hit a game-tying 3-pointer late in regulation, her third of the game, for Deer Lakes (15-5, 10-4). She and fellow senior Julia Hollibaugh scored 13 points apiece.
Cheswick Christian Academy 25, Evangel Heights 13 — Bethany Kosor put up a game-high 15 points as Cheswick Christian Academy (15-5, 8-1) rolled to a win in the first game of the February Frenzy Tourney at Neighborhood Academy. In game two, Julia Mangiapane scored a game high 17-points to help lead Portersville Christian to a 25-13 win over the Chargers.
North Catholic 69, Knoch 33 — The top-ranked Trojans jumped out to a 40-17 halftime lead to put the game out of reach early in a Section 1-4A matchup. Dani Short led North Catholic (19-2, 14-0) with 16 points. Lauren Cihonski scored 10 points to lead Knoch (9-12, 7-7).
Gateway 68, Plum 25 — Lexi Jackson had a double-double with 23 points and 16 rebounds to help Class 5A No. 3 Gateway (18-3, 11-1) roll to a Section 2-5A victory over Plum (10-11, 6-6).
Boys basketball
Belle Vernon 77, California 72 — Cam Nusser had 25 points, and Larry Callaway and Mitch Pohlot each had 21 as Belle Vernon (8-14) won a nonsection game.
Yough 48, South Allegheny 42 — Jarett Bach had 20 points, and Gamal Marballie added 16 as Yough (8-14) won a nonsection matchup.
St. Joseph 91, Imani Christian 48 — Andrew Sullivan and Grant Bendis scored 16 points apiece to help St. Joseph (16-5, 9-2) clinch at least a share of the Section 3-A title with a win over Imani Christian (4-13, 4-7). St. Joseph can win the section outright with a win over Leechburg on Friday. Matt Arvay added 12 points for the Spartans, C.J. Singletonhad 11 and Eli Swierczewski scored 10.
Nazareth Prep 58, Highlands 52 — Highlands led by two points late in the fourth quarter, but Nazareth Prep (14-3) closed the game on a 10-2 run to steal a nonsection victory. Luke Cochran led the Golden Rams (14-6) with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Korry Myers added 14 points and Johnny Crise scored 10. Will Taylor had 15 points to lead Nazareth Prep.
