High school roundup for Jan. 11, 2025: South Allegheny tops Avonworth in battle of top-ranked teams

Cam Epps hit six 3-pointers and finished with 26 points to lead South Allegheny to an 83-77 victory over Avonworth in a battle of top-ranked teams Saturday at the PBC Classic at La Roche College.

Drew Cook added 22 points, Josh Jackowski finished with 17 and Jake Uher had 12 for the Gladiators (13-1), ranked No. 1 in Class 3A by Trib HSSN. Nate Goetz scored 29 points and Rowan Carmichael added 24 for the Antelopes (10-2), ranked first in Class 4A.

Bishop Canevin 57, Shady Side Academy 56 – Drew Allen scored 23 points to power Bishop Canevin (6-7) to a win at the PBC Classic at La Roche. Jackson Maddix added 13, including the game-clinching free throws, and Lamier Wade chipped in 10. Seamus Riordan scored 26 and Landon Mauser added 10 for Shady Side Academy (4-9).

Cheswick Christian Academy 73, Cornerstone Prep 46 – Brady Rochkind poured in 33 points to lead Cheswick Christian (6-5) to a Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference win. Joseph Rosio added 17 and Marqis Johnson added 10 for the Chargers. Landon Tomasiak scored 14 points and Drew Rowland and Joe Ferguson each added 11 for Cornerstone Prep.

Hampton 55, Thomas Jefferson 52 (OT) – Jonas Cupps scored 15 points and Gavin Guinn added 12 to lead Hampton (7-6) to an overtime win at the PBC Classic at La Roche. Nicholas Trklja had 12 points and Noah Kaszer and Brady Kraus each added 11 for Thomas Jefferson (5-6).

McDowell 77, Allderdice 56 – Kamden Kramer scored 23 points and Leo Finazzo added 21 to lead McDowell to a nonsection win. Lukas Stead scored 20 and Trey Schachter added 16 for Allderdice (5-8).

McGuffey 64, Brentwood 47 Ayden Cunningham scored 28 points to lead McGuffey (11-3) past Brentwood (5-7) in a nonsection matchup. Wyatt Frazee chipped in 16 points for McGuffey. Forrest Betz led Brentwood with 17 while Colton Rosing contributed 13 points.

Neighborhood Academy 63, Hickory 52 – Courtney Wallace had 17 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists and Shamar Simpson also scored 17 points to lead Neighborhood Academy (13-1) at the Ron Galbreath Classic at Westminster. Derrick Hardeman set a school record with 10 blocked shots and Kedron Gilmore added 15 points. Ashton Boal led Hickory with 14 points.

Neshannock 55, Nazareth Prep 46 – David Kwiat scored 26 points and Tony Perrotta added 13 to lead Neshannock (11-1) to a win at the Ron Galbreath Classic at Westminster. Michel Keyes scored 13 and Leon Harrison added 11 for Nazareth Prep (9-3).

New Castle 66, Mars 43 – Led by 19 points from Kai Cox, 15 from Raphie Blundo and 11 from Damian Harrison, New Castle (11-1) won at the Ron Galbreath Classic at Westminster. Ben Detisch led Mars (7-5) with 12 points.

Richmond Heights (OH) 67, Aliquippa 63 – Mehki Ansberry scored 17 points to lead Richmond Heights to an overtime win at the Burger King Classic in Erie. Joshua Pratt scored 26 points, Qa’lil Goode added 11 and Marques Council had 10 for Aliquippa (7-3).

Seton LaSalle 62, OLSH 54 Keenu Brooks had 14 points, DayVaughn Williams added 13 and Noah Sear had 12 as Seton LaSalle (5-9) defeated OLSH (9-4) at the PBC Classic at La Roche. OLSH’s Tieman McCullough led all scorers with 21 points while Jake Johnson added 20 points.

South Fayette 54, Steel Valley 22 Gavin Orosz scored 13 points as South Fayette (9-4) downed Steel Valley (3-11) in nonsection play. Nate Yuhas scored 16 of Steel Valley’s 22 points.

Waynesburg 45, Charleroi 33 Cole Headlee had 16 points as Waynesburg (2-9, 2-1) defeated Charleroi (8-7, 2-2) in Section 4-3A play. Austin Surber added 12 points for Waynesburg, which trailed by four at halftime. Shea Smith tallied 11 points to pace Charleroi.

Girls basketball

Bishop Canevin 57, Eden Christian 29 Isabella Sysak had 21 points and Kya Cooley had 19 as Bishop Canevin (7-4) defeated Eden Christian (3-8) in nonsection play. Hannah Wallace scored 10 points for Eden Christian.

Cheswick Christian Academy 43, Cornerstone Prep 21 – Abby Louis hit for 22 points to lead Cheswick Christian (1-1) to a Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference win. Maddie Gessler scored 10 for Cornerstone Prep.

Neshannock 49, Mars 33 – Jaidon Nogay scored 15 points and Payton Newman added 12 to help Neshannock (12-2) to a win at the Ron Galbreath Classic at Westminster. Cecilia Christy led Mars (7-5) with 10 points.

Serra Catholic 64, West Mifflin 61 (2OT) – Bella Dumbroski scored 26 points to lead Serra Catholic (6-5) to a nonsection win in double overtime. Abby Genes added 20 and Nikki Sfanos had 13 for the Eagles. A’ryah Scott scored 22 points, Neraul Parms added 14 and Savaughn Wimbs chipped in 12 for West Mifflin (2-9).

Slippery Rock 52, Laurel 31 C.J. Sabo scored 18 points and Madison Romanovich added 16 points as Slippery Rock defeated Laurel (5-9) at the Ron Galbreath Classic at Westminster.

Waynesburg 49, Beth-Center 36 Avery Davis scored 37 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead Waynesburg (7-5) to the nonsection win against Beth-Center (8-6). Callie Dorsey recorded 16 points for Beth-Center.

Boys wrestling

Burgettstown tournament – Laurel claimed a pair of championships to lead the WPIAL contingent at Burgettstown. Domenic Willis pinned Armstrong’s Taye Bradshaw in the 189-pound finals and Kolton Carlson beat Quaker Valley’s Brennan Breisinger, 7-3, at 215.

Other WPIAL champs were Quaker Valley’s Bruce Anderchak (114), Mt. Lebanon’s Jonathan Emma (121), Central Valley’s Antonio Boni (127), Bentworth’s Drake McClure (133), Pine-Richland’s Dominic Ferraro (139), Ellwood City’s Gabe Lilly (160) and West Greene’s Colin Whyte (285).

Grove City won the team title with three champs, followed by Armstrong, North Hills and Laurel.

Mid-Winter Mayhem – Butler’s Santino Sloboda (121) and Thomas Jefferson’s Bode Marlow (172) claimed titles at IUP. Sloboda beat Altoona’s Braiden Weaver, 4-2, in the finals. Marlow topped Abington Heights’ Brian Heard, 26-17. Highlands’ Javeon Chambers (107) and Thomas Jefferson’s Shepherd Turk (285) were runners-up. Bishop McCort won five titles.

Girls wrestling

Mid-Winter Mayhem – Kiski Area’s Ava Golding (136) and Norwin’s Josephine Dollman (142) brought home titles from IUP. Golding pinned North Allegheny’s Lorelei Bungard in 36 seconds and Dollman pinned Bradford’s Shelby Shirley in 41 seconds. Plum’s Saphia Davis (130) and Peters Township’s Liliana Giulianelli (190) were also runners-up.
