High school roundup for Jan. 13, 2025: Penn-Trafford wins section showdown to stay unbeaten

Isabella Fontana and Hanna Weishaar scored 11 points apiece as Penn-Trafford stayed unbeaten with a 50-37 comeback victory over Indiana in a clash of Section 2-5A girls basketball contenders Monday night.

Torrie DeStefano added 10 for the Warriors (13-0, 6-0), who hit seven 3-pointers in the second half to erase a nine-point halftime deficit. Julia Antonucci scored eight points for Indiana (11-3, 5-1).

Albert Gallatin 46, Brownsville 41 – Mya Glisan scored 18 points and Ellie Seese added 10 to push Albert Gallatin (5-7) to a nonsection win. Skyler Gates scored 18 points for Brownsville (6-5).

Aquinas Academy 63, Western Beaver 24 – Tess Duer scored 15 points and Elliot Keverline had 15 to lead Aquinas Academy (8-4, 5-1) to a Section 1-A win. Elizabeth Squicquero scored 12 points for Western Beaver (3-9, 1-6).

Avonworth 67, Steel Valley 14 – Greta O’Brien scored 19 points, Bria Onyshko had 15 and Emma Obersteiner added 14 as Avonworth (7-5, 4-2) defeated Steel Valley (1-12, 1-5).

Beaver 48, Hampton 24 – Annsley Baker scored 13 points and Samantha Springman added 11 to lead Beaver (11-2, 5-1) to a Section 2-4A win. Harper Gibbons scored 11 points for Hampton (8-5, 3-3).

Belle Vernon 48, Southmoreland 20 – Aubrey Brown scored 17 points and Saylor Lee contributed 14 for Belle Vernon (6-8, 4-3) in Section 3-4A. Ashley Seder led Southmoreland (3-11, 1-6) with six points.

Bishop Canevin 53, Mapletown 26 – Kya Cooley scored 21 points and made five 3-pointers and Isabella Sysak added 14 points to lead Bishop Canevin (8-4, 3-3) to a Section 2-A win. Treslee Weston scored six points for Mapletown (2-13, 0-7).

Carmichaels 38, Jefferson-Morgan 32 – Ke’lani Chun scored 15 points to lead Carmichaels (1-12, 1-4) to a Section 3-2A win. Brelynn Wood scored 15 points for Jefferson-Morgan (1-12, 0-4).

Central Valley 55, Hopewell 40 – Nyah Hayes scored 22 points and Isabella Miller added 11 to lead Central Valley (7-4, 3-2) to a Section 2-4A win. Maya Richburg, Avery Boyd and Addison Blosnick scored nine points apiece for Hopewell (2-10, 1-4).

Chartiers-Houston 48, Bentworth 21 – Ava Kolovich scored 19 points and Ava Capazzoli added 12 to lead Chartiers-Houston (9-2, 3-0) to a Section 3-2A win. Kayla O’Dell scored nine points for Bentworth (6-7, 2-2).

Chartiers Valley 57, Mars 41 – Rachel Boehm scored 10 points for Chartiers Valley (9-5, 5-1) in a Section 3-5A win. Cecilia Christy scored 13 and Vita Vargo had 12 for Mars (7-6, 2-3).

Clairton 91, Monessen 57 – Iyanna Wade scored 60 points and Karma Fuqua followed with 21 for Clairton (9-2, 7-0) in a Section 2-A win. Madison Johnson scored 35 points and Na’Jaziah Carter had 15 for Monessen (3-8, 1-6). Wade’s career high is a WPIAL-record 65 points set last season against Steel Valley.

Elizabeth Forward 49, South Park 41 – Michelle Jellison scored 16 points and Mia Sostaric added 11 to push Elizabeth Forward (9-3, 6-0) past South Park (8-3, 5-1) in a Section 3-4A win. Andrea Kuczma scored 16 points and Bella Stromberg had 12 for the Eagles.

Fort Cherry 50, South Side 45 – Olivia Kemp scored 24 points to lead Fort Cherry (11-2, 4-0) to a Section 2-2A win. Bailey Strnisa scored 12 points and Ashtyn Michael had 10 for South Side (8-5, 3-1).

Geibel Catholic 61, Serra Catholic 36 – Emma Larkin scored 28 points, Mallory Clemmer had 19 and Ava Henderson added 10 to lead Geibel Catholic (13-1, 6-1) to a Section 2-A win. Abby Genes scored 14 points and Bella Dumbroski had 13 for Serra Catholic (6-6, 4-2).

Greensburg Central Catholic 66, Deer Lakes 21 – Erica Gribble scored 21 points and Jayla Peterson added 17 to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (8-3, 4-1) to a Section 2-3A win over Deer Lakes (9-4, 4-3).

Greensburg Salem 56, West Mifflin 28 – Mya Heasley scored 17 points and Blessing Gantt added 10 to lead Greensburg Salem (8-6, 2-4) to a Section 2-5A win over West Mifflin (2-10, 0-6). Savaughn Wimbs scored 16 points for the Titans.

Highlands 61, Valley 49 – Tyarah Woody scored 29 points, Bella Bonnett had 13 and Kailah Jones added 11 to lead Highlands (4-9, 3-4) past Valley (1-13, 0-7) in a Section 1-4A win.

Keystone Oaks 65, Washington 32 – Laney Wagner led Keystone Oaks (10-1, 4-1) with 16 points, Payton Hamilton followed with 13, Hannah York added 11 and Kailyn Brannon had 10 in a Section 3-3A win. Olivia Woods scored 20 points for Washington (4-9, 1-5).

Knoch 37, Freeport 23 – Neah Ewing scored 12 points and Aubrey Spencer added 10 to lead Knoch (5-8, 4-2) to a Section 1-4A win. Nia DiSanti scored 11 points for Freeport (3-11, 2-5).

Laurel 55, Freedom 32 – Maelee Hill scored 12 points and Macey Cwynar, Jael Henderson and Shyan Tindall added 11 points apiece to lead Laurel (6-9, 2-3) to a Section 1-2A win. Olivia Henderson scored 12 points and Mackenzie Mohrbacher had 11 for Freedom (3-9, 1-4).

Laurel Highlands 68, Yough 17 – Sierra Jenkins led with 20 points, Maya Harris followed with 17 and Aryianna Sumpter added 11 for Laurel Highlands (10-4, 5-2) in a Section 3-4A win. Hailey Bock scored six points for Yough (8-5, 3-3).

Lincoln Park 54, Ambridge 13 – Patty Wesolowski scored 24 points, Scarlet D’Amico had 13 and Maddi Jannuzi added 12 to lead Lincoln Park (3-7, 1-2) to a Section 2-4A win over Ambridge (1-9, 0-6).

Mt. Pleasant 51, Ringgold 32 – Ryleigh Drzal scored 16 points to lead Mt. Pleasant (2-11, 2-5) to a Section 3-4A win. Jada Gernot scored 17 for Ringgold (6-7, 0-6).

North Catholic 64, Derry 25 – Kate Vislosky, Brady Wehner and Lauren Reitz scored nine points apiece to lead North Catholic (12-2, 7-0) to a Section 1-4A win. Jane Huss scored seven points for Derry (3-8, 1-5).

Oakland Catholic 48, Burrell 13 – Zephania Troxler-Scott and Madi Pullen each scored 11 points to lead Oakland Catholic (10-2, 6-1) to a Section 1-4A win. Jules Fisher scored 10 for Burrell (9-5, 4-3).

OLSH 61, Mohawk 13 – Claudia Ierullo scored 19 points and Camryn Hummel added 12 for OLSH (12-2, 7-0) in a Section 1-3A win over Mohawk (3-10, 2-5).

Penn Hills 41, Gateway 20 – Led by 16 points from Milani Oliver, 12 from Malaya Middleton and 10 from Cara Crawford, Penn Hills (2-10, 2-4) beat Gateway (0-9, 0-5) in Section 1-5A.

Quaker Valley 53, Ellwood City 45 – Mimi Thiero scored 34 points and Quaker Valley (7-6, 5-2) rallied from 16 points down in the first half for a Section 1-3A win. Kayla Jones scored 16, Delaney Sturgeon had 15 and Caitlin Kreitzer added 12 for Ellwood City (8-5, 4-3).

Redeemer Lutheran 49, Nazareth Prep 7 – Jordan Mitchell scored 17 points, Anika Van Wyk added 14 and Molly Hagey had 10 to lead Redeemer Lutheran.

Seton LaSalle 54, McGuffey 38 – Tiara Curry led with 14 points, Addie Lonergan followed with 13 and Natalie Pascarella added 12 to push Seton LaSalle (10-3, 6-0) to a Section 3-3A win. Taylor Schumacher scored 14 points for McGuffey (9-5, 4-2).

Sewickley Academy 30, Leechburg 29 – Grace Jardini scored 17 points to lead Sewickley Academy (4-7, 3-4) to a Section 1-A win. Addie Zanotto scored 15 points and Joselyn Collini had 14 for Leechburg (0-11, 0-6).

Shady Side Academy 57, East Allegheny 10 – Cassie Sauer scored 16 points to lead Shady Side Academy (14-0, 7-0) to a Section 2-3A win over East Allegheny (1-9, 0-6).

South Allegheny 27, Ligonier Valley 12 – Ella Lotz scored 12 points and Jaz Farnan added 11 to lead South Allegheny (2-9, 2-3) past Ligonier Valley (3-8, 2-4) in Section 2-3A.

St. Joseph 70, Springdale 36 – Gia Richter scored 22 points, Kasey Cienik added 15 and Bella Bartolovic had 14 to power St. Joseph (9-5, 5-2) in Section 1-A. Ashlyn Ferderbar scored 12 and Jocelyn Dexter chipped in 10 for Springdale (7-8, 4-3).

Trinity 73, Uniontown 18 – Sutton Williamson and Bentley Layhue scored 15 points apiece and Vitt Emerich added 11 for Trinity (8-4, 3-3) in a Section 4-5A win. Emily Myers scored eight points for Uniontown (4-9, 1-5).

Trinity Christian 39, Propel Braddock Hills 32 – Elena Myers scored 14 points and Eilidh Edgar added 12 to lead Trinity Christian. Jasmin Smith scored 10 for Propel Braddock Hills.

Union 64, Eden Christian 16 – Kylie Fruehstorfer led with 20 points and Olivia Benedict followed with 14 for Union (13-0, 7-0) in a Section 1-A win. Hannah Wallace scored nine points for Eden Christian (3-9, 2-5).

Upper St. Clair 46, Mt. Lebanon 37 – Rylee Kalocay scored 31 points to lead Upper St. Clair (10-2, 4-0) to a Section 2-6A win. Elizabeth Twyman scored 13 points for Mt. Lebanon (7-6, 2-3).

Waynesburg 55, Charleroi 33 – Avery Davis led with 18 points, Peyton Collins followed with 17 and Mya Smith added 10 for Waynesburg (8-5, 3-3) in a Section 3-3A win. Eden Smith scored 12 points for Charleroi (0-15, 0-6).

West Greene 72, Avella 41 – Kendra Tharp led with 22 points, Madelyn Roberts followed with 20 and Kylee Davis added 10 for West Greene (8-2, 3-2) in a Section 2-A win. Ava Frank scored 18 points for Avella (6-8, 2-5).

Winchester Thurston 57, Riverview 36 – Jasmine Hollins scored 15 points and Sky Still added 14 to lead Winchester Thurston (10-2, 5-0) in a battle of top teams in Section 4-2A. Isabel Chaparro scored 17 and Katerina Tsambis had 10 for Riverview (7-3, 3-1).

Boys basketball

Belle Vernon 90, West Mifflin 60 – Zion Moore scored 24 points to become the program’s second-leading scorer, helping Belle Vernon (11-4, 6-1) to a Section 3-4A win. Trevor Kovatch scored 23 points, including 13 in the first quarter, and Curtis Wade had 12 for the Leopards. Daven Reynolds scored 16 points and Julian Dewberry added 10 for West Mifflin (3-12, 2-4).

Chartiers Valley 68, Mars 65 – Jayden Davis and Chartiers Valley (12-1, 5-1) outdueled Austen Wroblewski and Mars (7-6, 3-2) in a matchup of top teams in Section 4-5A. Davis scored 36 points and Julian Semplice added 18 for the Colts. Wroblewski scored 32 and Ben Detisch added 12 for the Fightin’ Planets.

Neighborhood Academy 74, St. Joseph 29 – Courtney Wallace had 18 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists and Kedron Gilmore added 16 points to lead Neighborhood Academy (14-1, 5-0) to a Section 2-A win. Shamar Simpson and Syncer Nicholson each had 11. Ryan McCarthy scored eight points for St. Joseph (6-7, 2-3).

Avonworth 5, West Allegheny 3 – Conner Ralston had a hat trick and added an assist to lead Avonworth (12-3-1) to a Class A win. Cooper Powell and Linus Jesionowski also scored and Aidan O’Dell had two assists. John Wineland had a hat trick and Branden Switalski doled out three assists for West Allegheny (5-8).

Butler 4, Richland 0 – Seamus Griffith had a goal and an assist, Zachary Zandarski, Ethan Geibel and Brayden Hardsock also scored and Kaidon Vorel made 14 saves to lead Butler (3-8-3) past Richland (1-15) in Class A.

Carrick 5, Central Valley 1 – Max Hagan and Ethan Semenov each had a goal and an assist and Shane Birkenfeld and Drew Bird also scored for Carrick (7-4-2) in a Division 2 win. Caleb McQuaid scored for Central Valley (4-10).

Chartiers Valley 8, Beaver 1 – Brady Nairn had a hat trick and Jackson Chorey added a goal and an assist to lead Chartiers Valley (13-1) to a Class A win. Ryan Viola, Noah Callender, Calum Staab and Darien Strosnider also scored. Brooke Goulder scored for Beaver (3-9-1).

Deer Lakes 9, Sewickley Academy 1 – Ryan Grunden had four goals and an assist and Mason Cervone and RJ Norkus added two goals and two assists apiece to lead Deer Lakes (11-4) to a Division 2 win. CJ Wright scored for Sewickley Academy (0-13-1).

Greensburg Salem 9, Kiski 0 – Jake Fink, Luke Dieter and Jeremiah Faulk each scored two goals and Hayden Henry made 13 saves to lead Greensburg Salem (5-9) past Kiski (0-14-1) in Class A. Luca Vento and Bryce Ferace each had a goal and an assist and Nathan Ross also scored.

Indiana 5, Hampton 2 – Matt Stone had a goal and an assist and Luke Rowe made 32 saves to lead Indiana (7-5-3) to a Class A win. Jackson Albert, Ryan Bell, Spencer Hillsberry and Andrew Manzek also scored. Joey Stephenson had a pair of goals for Hampton (6-10).

Latrobe 5, Baldwin 0 – Joey Crimboli had two goals and an assist and Brock Pflugh made 27 saves to lead Latrobe (12-2) to a Class 2A win. Dale Henigan, Dylan Morris and Jackson Hayburn also scored. Tony Herman made 33 saves for Baldwin (3-10-1).

Meadville 7, Wheeling Central Catholic 3 – Robert Mahoney had four goals and an assist and Graham Shellhaas scored twice to lead Meadville (6-8) to a Class A victory. Bode Burge scored twice for Wheeling Central Catholic (7-7-1).

Montour 5, McDowell 2 – Aiden Moskovitz scored four goals and Thomas Barefoot had four assists to lead Montour (11-4) to a Class A win. Cole Dallas also scored. Cameron Tenant and Dylan Payne had goals for McDowell (5-8).

Moon 8, Freeport 1 – Landon Watson had two goals and two assists, Josh Koren added a goal and two assists and Sawyer Baron and Brody Eckert had a goal and an assist each to lead Moon (13-2-1) to a Class A win. Landen Kozma scored for Freeport (3-12-1).

Mt. Lebanon 3, Bethel Park 1 – Kaden Lane, Liam Shinn and Chayce Stasiowski scored and Xavier Bias had two assists for Mt. Lebanon (11-1-1) in a Class 3A win. Tyler Miller scored for Bethel Park (5-10).

Neshannock 5, Gateway 4 – John Monoides scored the game-winning goal shorthanded with 6.6 seconds left for Neshannock (10-3-1) in Division 2. Gateway (5-8-1) rallied from a 4-0 deficit to tie the score.

North Allegheny 4, Franklin Regional 3 (SO) – William Kasunich scored the tying goal in the third period and Joey Mitchell scored twice to lead North Allegheny (7-5) to a shootout win in Class 3A. Joey Casella scored twice and Ryan Crouse had a goal and an assist for Franklin Regional (6-6-1).

Plum 9, Westmont Hilltop 1 – Luca Lapiana had a hat trick and added an assist, Tyler Bartos scored twice, and Colby Bartos and Nick Majors each had a goal and an assist for Plum (10-3-1) in a Class A win. Cullen Carlson scored for Westmont Hilltop (1-13-1).

Quaker Valley 5, Shaler 4 (OT) – Jace Vasbinder scored the overtime winner and Max Modrovich had a goal and an assist to lead Quaker Valley (16-0) in Class A. Charlie Pyle, Colin York and Luke Koehler also scored. Brendan Fitzgerald scored the tying goal in the third period and added an assist for Shaler (10-3-1). Colby Colamarino, Darius Malecki and Lucca Laquatra also scored.
