High school roundup for Jan. 15, 2024: Kiski Area boys knock off Penn Hills in clash for 1st place

Carson Heinle scored 21 points, and Jacob Musselman added 20 to lead Kiski Area to a 68-53 win over Penn Hills in a battle of the top two teams in Section 2-5A boys basketball Tuesday night.

Colin Keller added 11 for the Cavaliers (7-6, 5-1), who jumped out to a 15-4 lead after one quarter. Calix Clark scored 20 points for Penn Hills (5-7, 5-1). Amon Hawthorne added 12 and Cam Glenn had 11.

Aliquippa 57, Ellwood City 31 – Joshua Pratt scored 20 points and Qa’lil Goode added 14 to lead Aliquippa (8-3, 5-0) to a Section 1-3A win. Aaron Lake scored 10 points for Ellwood City (8-5, 4-1).

Allderdice 43, Obama Academy 39 – Asher Schwartz scored 14 points and Markus Kuhn put up 12 as Allderdice (6-8, 4-0) erased an Obama Academy (4-6, 3-1) five-point lead with four minutes to go for a City League win. Naron Jackson dropped 16 points for Obama.

Avonworth 57, Beaver 53 – Avonworth and Rowan Carmichael outdueled Brady Mayo and Beaver in a matchup of two of the WPIAL’s top scorers in Section 2-4A. Carmichael scored 44 points for the victorious Antelopes (11-2, 5-0). Mayo scored 19 points and Junior Marino had 16 for the Bobcats (11-4, 3-2).

Baldwin 67, Thomas Jefferson 50 – Nate Wesling scored 22 points, Caden Cherico had 13 and Max Marzina and Matt Schenk added 10 points apiece to lead Baldwin (12-1, 5-1) to a Section 3-5A win. Justin Fry scored 20 points and Noah Kaszer had 14 for Thomas Jefferson (5-7, 1-4).

Beaver County Christian 60, Avella 46 – Hunter Mozely scored 23 points, Rocco DeSarbo added 12 and Nick Necaster had 11 for Beaver County Christian (7-4, 2-2) in Section 1-A. Nate Cilia scored 16 and Rylan Bell added 10 for Avella (7-7, 1-3).

Bentworth 56, Frazier 37 – Ben Hays scored 19 points, Chris Harper added 13 and Ryan Moessner finished with 10 as Bentworth (5-8, 2-5) beat Frazier (3-11, 1-6) in Section 1-2A. Trey Whitehead scored 10 for the Commodores.

Canon-McMillan 64, Connellsville 54 – Michael Detrich scored 28 points and Roman Koenemund added 18 to lead Canon-McMillan (3-10, 1-6) to a Section 2-6A win. Rocco Farrell and Lucas Harwood scored 13 points apiece for Connellsville (3-11, 0-7).

Burgettstown 77, Mapletown 50 – Colton County led Burgettstown (4-10, 1-6) with 14 points, Parker Rommes followed with 13 and James Newark added 10 in a Section 3-2A win. Lucas Stevenson scored 26 points and Carson Vanata had 14 for Mapletown (0-12, 0-7).

Central Catholic 55, Imani Christian 52 – Jaydan Brown, Enzo Khalil, Calvin Vento and Christian Williams scored 12 points apiece to lead Central Catholic (9-4, 6-1) to a Section 2-6A win. R.J. Sledge scored 25 points and Donovan Gordon had 15 for Imani Christian (7-5, 5-2).

Central Valley 63, Quaker Valley 41 – Isaiah Jeter scored 22 points to lead Central Valley (12-2, 4-1) to a Section 2-4A win. Nic Cohen scored 16 points and Harrison Kerley had 10 for Quaker Valley (8-4, 2-3).

Chartiers-Houston 55, Jefferson-Morgan 38 – Nate Gregory scored 13 points, Justus Buckingham and Aaron Walsh each had 12 and Jake Perchinsky added 10 to lead Chartiers-Houston (11-2, 5-1) to a Section 3-2A win. Dayten Marion scored 12 points and Houston Guesman had 10 for Jefferson-Morgan (9-4, 5-2).

Cheswick Christian Academy 51, Hillcrest Academy 27 – Joseph Rosio scored 14 points and Brady Rochkind added 10 to lead Cheswick Christian Academy (7-5) to a Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference win.

Fox Chapel 49, Butler 38 – Caden Kaiser produced a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds and John Rehak scored 12 points for Fox Chapel (11-3, 6-1) in a Section 1-6A win. Andrew Gettinger scored 15 points and Tayt Lucas added 13 for Butler (9-5, 2-5).

Gateway 77, McKeesport 52 – Mykel Bruce-McCrommon had 19 points, nine rebounds and eight assists and Paul Nnacho had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Gateway (7-6, 5-2) in Section 1-5A. Chris Settles added 17 points, Assan Wallace finished with 13 points and Jax Vovaris had 12 for the Gators. Lamont Perkins led McKeesport (4-10, 2-5) with 23 points.

Greensburg Central Catholic 57, Springdale 26 – Brandon Martin scored 13 points to lead four players in double figures for Greensburg Central Catholic (12-1, 6-0) in a Section 1-2A win over Springdale (9-5, 3-4). AJ Tarpley added 12 and Samir Crosby and Brady O’Rourke each had 10 for the Centurions.

Hampton 51, Shaler 46 – Gavin Guinn scored 20 points and drained six 3-pointers to lead Hampton (8-6, 4-2) to a Section 2-5A victory. Deron Dixon put up 15 points and Jordan Epps had 12 for Shaler (5-9, 2-4).

Hopewell 62, Ambridge 60 – James Armstrong led with 27 points and Zach Kovell followed with 19 to push Hopewell (5-8, 1-3) to a Section 2-4A win. Jared Astorino scored 22 points and Julien Hubbard had 16 for Ambridge (2-10, 0-5).

Keystone Oaks 63, Carlynton 47 – Joseph Colton dropped 20 points and Erond Jakuoi added 15 to boost Keystone Oaks (10-4, 3-2) to a Section 2-3A win. Damien Holloway scored 23 points to lead Carlynton (6-7, 2-3).

Knoch 71, Freeport 29 – Teegan Finucan put up 26 points and made four three-pointers to power Knoch (10-4, 5-1) to a Section 1-4A win against Freeport (3-10, 1-5). Carson Kane scored 11 for the Yellowjackets.

Laurel 63, Western Beaver 50 – Jayden Iorio put up 33 points and Mason Ernst finished with 10 as Laurel (8-6, 2-4) defeated Western Beaver (2-11, 0-7) in Section 4-2A. Jackson Liller scored 12 for the Golden Beavers.

Ligonier Valley 56, Charleroi 52 – Parker Hollick scored 15 points, Noah Knupp added 12, Brian Wisniewski followed with 11 and Mike Wisniewski contributed 10 for Ligonier Valley (7-6, 2-2) in a Section 3-3A win over Charleroi (8-8, 2-3).

Mohawk 68, Freedom 20 – Bobby Fadden scored 23 points and drained five 3-pointers, Drew Wrona added 14 points and Joey Nail contributed 10 as Mohawk (11-2, 5-0) rolled to a Section 1-3A win over Freedom (1-9, 1-3).

Monessen 71, Geibel Catholic 61 – Rodney Johnson scored 23 points, TyVaughn Kershaw had 16 and Jay’veyon Jeffries added 12 to lead Monessen (8-4, 3-2) to a Section 2-A win. Evan Strimel scored 15 points and Eahn Stevenson and Gary Tarbuk had 10 points apiece for Geibel Catholic (7-5, 2-3).

Nazareth Prep 87, Aquinas Academy 80 – Will Evans led all scorers with 35 points, Leon Harrison finished with 20 and Khylil Johnson had 11 for Nazareth Prep (10-3, 5-0) in a Section 1-A win. Sam Duer produced 33 points and hit seven 3-pointers, Jake Guillen added 21 points, David Zaharko dropped 11 and Jonah Burchill finished with 10 for Aquinas Academy (12-2, 4-1).

Neshannock 63, Union 52 – Jake Rynd scored 23 points and Tony Perrotta dropped 18 as Neshannock (12-1, 7-0) bested Union (11-4, 5-2) in Section 4-2A. Lucas Stanely led all scorers with 31 points for the Scotties.

New Brighton 64, Riverside 60 – Dash Graham led with 24 points, Carter Jackson followed with 16 and Rashawn Eleazor added 13 to push New Brighton (3-8, 2-3) to a Section 1-3A win. Logan Young scored 18 points and Will Sullivan had 14 for Riverside (7-8, 2-4).

New Castle 46, North Allegheny 37 – Kai Cox scored 14 points, Ralphie Blundo had 13 and Chase Lemmon added nine to lead New Castle (12-1, 6-1) to a Section 1-6A win. Jon Jubec scored 18 points and Carter Melzer had 10 for North Allegheny (5-8, 1-6).

OLSH 53, South Side 38 – Jake Johnson scored 31 points to lead OLSH (10-4, 5-1) to a Section 4-2A win. RJ Fischer scored 12 points for South Side (9-6, 3-4).

Penn-Trafford 66, Laurel Highlands 44 – Tyler Anthony and Brayden Stone each scored 11 points and Evan Gross added 10 for Penn-Trafford (6-6, 3-4) in a Section 1-5A. Antwan Black put up 13 to lead Laurel Highlands (4-10, 1-6).

Plum 71, Indiana 68 – Max Grice scored 23 points, Will Beckner added 17 and Mekhi Samuels chipped in 11 for Plum (7-6, 3-3) in Section 2-5A. Dom Kowchuk scored 19, Aaron Webb had 17 and Darius Webb finished with 11 for Indiana (5-8, 2-4).

Riverview 50, California 47 – Alex Schultheis scored 19 points and Rex Roberts added 15 to lead Riverview (6-7, 4-3) to a Section 1-2A win. Vinny Manzella scored 16 points and Jacob Ziolecki had 15 for California (2-11, 0-7).

Seneca Valley 48, Pine-Richland 45 – Tyler Pepin led with 20 points and Owen Congdon followed with 13 to push Seneca Valley (9-6, 6-1) to a Section 1-6A win. Grant Spacciapolli scored 15 points and Emery Moye had 14 for Pine-Richland (5-7, 3-4).

Serra Catholic 74, Environmental Charter 48 – Owen Dumbroski scored 22 points, Brayden Graham added 18 and Tyler Sapida chipped in 10 for Serra Catholic (11-2, 4-1) in Section 2-A. Tobias Howard and Gerard Williams each scored 11 for Environmental Charter (0-9, 0-5).

Sewickley Academy 74, Leechburg 24 – Lucas Grimsley scored 16 points to lead Sewickley Academy (10-2, 6-0) past Leechburg (2-13, 1-5) in Section 2-2A.

Shenango 61, Rochester 32 – Joe Campoli scored 14 points and Taegan Russo added 11 to lead Shenango (6-7, 4-3) to a Section 4-2A win. Bobby George scored 13 points for Rochester (4-10, 1-6).

Southmoreland 68, Brownsville 32 – Elliot Premus and Ty Whoric scored 18 points apiece, Noah Felentzer had 16 and Stanley Chapman added 11 for Southmoreland (12-2, 5-0) in a Section 4-3A win against Brownsville (3-11, 1-3).

South Park 51, Apollo-Ridge 33 – Luke Scarff scored 24 points and Cooper Hochendoner added 11 to lead South Park (10-3, 3-1) to a Section 3-3A win. Brayden Myers led Apollo-Ridge (3-12, 0-5) with 12 points.

Summit Academy 66, Cornell 35 – Led by 19 points from Robert Young, 17 from Ky’zir Rowan and 16 from Quaran Joiner, Summit Academy (4-6, 1-3) picked up a Section 1-A win. Edmundo Benitez led Cornell (1-11, 0-4) with 11 points.

Trinity 67, Ringgold 63 – Jacob Dunkle led Trinity (7-5, 2-4) with 31 points and Jonah Williamson followed with 22 in a Section 3-5A win. Szyair Dungee scored 23 points and Demitri Lowe and Xavion Thomas had 16 points apiece for Ringgold (3-8, 0-4).

Uniontown 75, Franklin Regional 58 – Calvin Winfrey scored 29 points and Notorious Grooms followed with 20 to lead Uniontown (12-3, 7-0) in Section 1-5A. Kelan Milson chipped in 13 for the Red Raiders. Jonah Johnston scored 18 and Connor Crossey had 16 for Franklin Regional (6-8, 2-5).

Upper St. Clair 37, Mt. Lebanon 29 – Tyler Robbins scored 16 points to lead all scorers as Upper St. Clair (14-1, 7-0) defeated Mt. Lebanon (7-6, 3-4) in Section 2-6A.

Washington 57, McGuffey 55 – Will Callan scored 20 points as Washington (4-9, 2-3) edged McGuffey (11-4, 3-2) in a Section 2-3A win. Aydan Cunningham led all scorers with 25 points and Mason Nemeth produced 10 for the Highlanders.

Waynesburg 87, Mt. Pleasant 67 – Alex VanSickle led all scorers with 31 points, Dan Woods dropped 19 and Cole Headlee followed with 18 as Waynesburg (3-9, 3-1) defeated Mt. Pleasant (0-14, 0-5) in Section 4-3A. Brady Brooks scored 17, Kade Hutchinson finished with 12 and Cole Massari and Aiden Johnson each put up 10 for the Vikings.

West Allegheny 62, Lincoln Park 53 – Donovan O’Connor recorded a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds to power West Allegheny (6-8, 2-4) to a Section 4-5A victory. Ty Blatz and Josiah Johnson scored 10 points apiece for the Indians. Damar Johnson put up 20 points and Dionte Henry had 14 for Lincoln Park (2-10, 0-6).

West Greene 59, Beth-Center 55 – Lane Allison and Landen Hill each scored 15 points and Patrick Durbin added 11 to lift West Greene (7-6, 5-2) past Beth-Center (7-6, 4-3) in a close Section 3-2A contest. Jason Zellie dropped 24 points and Brayden Hull followed with 20 for the Bulldogs. Zellie and Hull each made five 3-pointers.

West Mifflin 59, Greensburg Salem 50 – Daven Reynolds led all scorers with 28 points and Julian Drewberry had 10 as West Mifflin (4-12, 3-4) beat Greensburg Salem (3-9, 2-4) in Section 3-4A. Solomon Cain scored 14 and Tyler Martin followed with 13 for the Lions.

Westinghouse 43, Brashear 40 – Souljah Cook scored 10 points for Westinghouse (2-8, 2-2) in a City League win. Mike Lee scored 17 points for Brashear (4-11, 1-3).

Winchester Thurston 63, Eden Christian 46 – Led by 20 points from Michael Hemmerling, 19 from Anthony Pipkin and 14 from Marcus Southers, Winchester Thurston (8-4, 3-2) claimed a Section 2-2A win. Brady Salvia and River Bartram each scored 12 for Eden Christian (3-10, 2-4).

Allderdice 72, Obama Academy 34 – Peyton Lynch scored 15 points, Seena Teshome followed with 13, Bailey White added 12 and Rhyan Sledge chipped in with 10 as Allderdice (10-5, 4-0) cruised to a City League victory. Arianna Treadwell had 13 and Taylor Phillips finished with 11 points for Obama Academy (3-7, 3-1).

Carrick 53, Perry 32 – Kaliyah Hairston and Jocelyn Fisher scored 18 points apiece to lead Carrick (7-7, 2-2) to a City League win. Kiesha Adams scored 16 points for Perry (1-3, 1-3).

Fox Chapel 41, Plum 23 – Lyla Jablon scored 14 points to lead Fox Chapel (9-5, 4-2) to a Section 1-5A win. Serena Carnahan scored eight points for Plum (4-8, 3-3).

Moon 43, Montour 40 – Maria Depner scored 18 points and Jaedin Griggs had 13 to push Moon (8-4, 4-2) past Montour (6-7, 1-4) in a Section 3-5A win.

Peters Township 55, Bethel Park 35 – Daniela Radulovich scored 16 points and Natalie Wetzel added 14 to lead Peters Township (13-1, 6-0) to a Section 4-5A win. Kat Boff scored 10 points for Bethel Park (6-8, 3-3).

Serra Catholic 68, West Greene 50 – Bella Dumbroski lit up the scoreboard with 34 points and Abby Jones put up 22 to power Serra Catholic (7-6, 5-2) to a Section 2-A victory. Madelyn Roberts scored 17 and Kendra Tharp finished with 13 for West Greene (8-3, 3-3).

Thomas Jefferson 65, Baldwin 60 – Maggie Spell led with 15 points, Kaylee DeAngelo followed with 13 and Riley McCabe and Allie Wilson added 10 points apiece to push Thomas Jefferson (13-2, 5-1) to a Section 4-5A win. Lynsey Benotas scored 23 points and Isabella Niles had 14 for Baldwin (7-7, 3-3).

Cathedral Prep 5, Bishop McCort 2 – Tucker Kinnear scored a hat trick, Ethan Cunningham had a goal and two assists and Chris Bruschi added a goal and an assist for Cathedral Prep (10-3) in Class 2A. Nate Riek and Isaiah Lieb scored for Bishop McCort (5-8-1).

Connellsville 11, Bishop Canevin 0 – Alex Boone scored a hat trick and Tony Fleck added two goals and two assists as Connellsville (7-4-1-1-1) shut out Bishop Canevin (8-7) in Division 2. Ethan Frazee, Braden Rodgerson, Hunter Garlick, Ty Snyder, Sam Denny and Santo Crucio scored for the Falcons. Nick Daniels-Nimmick had the shutout for Connellsville.

Fox Chapel 5, Canon-McMillan 0 – Liam Wiseman had a goal and two assists, Parker Haberman added a goal and an assist and Miles Carey made 21 saves to lead Fox Chapel (10-2-1) to a Class 2A win over Canon-McMillan (4-9-1).

Mars 7, North Catholic 5 – Jack Weaver, Cooper Stevens and Gavin Stevenson each had a goal and an assist and Ben Bowser doled out three assists to lead Mars (13-3) to a Class A win. Beckett Dunn scored four goals for North Catholic (11-4).

Penn-Trafford 9, Norwin 2 – Came Kist had a hat trick and two assists and Robert Thatcher collected two goals and three assists to lead Penn-Trafford (13-2-1) to a Class 2A win. Mason Driskill and Marco Ferraccio each had a goal and an assist. Cade Zeravica and Zayn Zeravica each had a goal and an assist for Norwin (1-11-1).

Peters Township 4, Central Catholic 3 – Cole Neupaver scored two goals while John Ripepi and Brendan Monko each scored one as Peters Township (4-8-1-1) beat Central Catholic (7-6-2) in Class 3A. Noah Hritz, Santino Strobel and Cain Phillip each scored for the Vikings.

Wrestling

Washington 34, Fort Cherry 18 – Camron Shaffer (139) and Kar’zell Daugherty (285) recorded pins and Jahvon Woods (152) won by major decision as Washington (1-1) won a nonsection match, giving coach Kyle Cline his first dual meet victory. Christian Yanosko (172) won by fall for Fort Cherry (0-3).
