High school roundup for Jan. 2, 2019: Mars edges Shaler in Section 3-5A battle

The No. 1 boys basketball team in Class 5A faced a stern challenge in its first game of 2019 but held its spot atop the Section 3 standings.
Andrew Recchia poured in 27 points to lead Mars to a 68-62 win over Shaler on Wednesday night.
Khori Fusco added 15 points, and Michael Carmody had 11 points and 16 rebounds for the Planets (8-1, 3-0). Zac Schlegel had 12 points in the win.
Mekhi Reynolds scored 19 for Shaler (7-3, 2-1).
Aliquippa 62, Sewickley Academy 59 — Zuriah Fisher had 16 points, and William Gipson added 14 as Class 3A No. 2 Aliquippa (5-3) won a nonsection game.
Nate Ridgeway had 26 points, and Isiah Warfield added 22 for Class 2A No. 1 Sewickley Academy (4-3).
Fox Chapel 74, McKeesport 61 — Ryan Kerr scored a team-high 22 points and the Foxes pulled away with a 26-point fourth quarter to upend McKeesport in a nonsection matchup. Will Livingston put up 18 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, and Sam Brown finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds for Fox Chapel (5-4). Deamonte Diggs led McKeesport (5-4) with a game-high 24 points.
Pine-Richland 82, Franklin Regional 52 — Logan Murray scored 26 points to guide Class 6A No. 3 Pine-Richland (8-2) to a nonsection win.
Johnny O’Toole scored 13 points, and Thomas Merante added 12 for the Class 5A No. 5 Panthers (7-3), who were outscored 26-8 in the second quarter.
Trinity 68, Washington 56 — Michael Koroly had 22 points, and Dylan King added 18 as Trinity (4-5) won a nonsection contest. Zahmere Robinson scored 25 for Class 2A no. 5 Washington (3-4).
West Shamokin 64, Leechburg 54 — The Blue Devils struggled in the second quarter and finished 5 of 17 from the foul line as Leechburg suffered a nonsection loss to District 6 Heritage Conference foe West Shamokin. Dylan Cook led Leechburg (6-4) with 21 points, and Jake Blumer chipped in with 18. Carson DeWitt led West Shamokin with a game-high 29 points.
Girls basketball
Blackhawk 63, South Fayette 50 — Mackenzie Amalia had 19 points, and Mady Aulbach added 16 as Class 4A No. 2 Blackhawk (7-2) won a nonsection game over South Fayette (7-3).
Wrestling
Mt. Pleasant 42, Yough 36 — There were six contested bouts between Mt. Pleasant and Yough in their Class AA, Section 3B match Wednesday night. The Vikings won all of them.
Luke Geibig (106 pounds), Noah Teeter (120), Damian George (138), Patrick Brewer (152), Kyle Jones (170) and Dayton Pitzer (182) all had pins for the Vikings (4-4, 2-1).
Mt. Pleasant forfeited six weight classes to Yough (3-6, 1-2), and there was no match at 132.
Penn-Trafford 58, Plum 9 — Led by pins by Luke Paszek (120 pounds), Wesley Stull (138), Nick Coy (145) and Lukas Johnson (170), Penn-Trafford (2-1, 2-1) secured a Class AAA, Section 1A victory.
Penn-Trafford also won four matches by forfeit.
Latrobe 73, Gateway 3 — Marino Angelicchio (113 pounds), Enzo Angelicchio (120), Gabe Willochell (132), Jack Pletcher (152), Logan Zitterbart (160), Tyler Ross (195) and Luke Shaffer (285) all had pins as Latrobe (3-1, 2-1) rolled to a Class AAA, Section 1B victory.
Nate Cochran (106) added a major decision, and the Wildcats won four matches by forfeit.
