The No. 1 Chartiers Valley girls basketball team kept its perfect season intact Thursday with a tense, hard-fought 41-38 section win at Thomas Jefferson.

The Colts (18-0, 10-0) overcame a 36-32 deficit late in the fourth quarter by scoring nine consecutive points and securing a 41-36 advantage.

Mackenzie Wagner, a 5-foot-10 senior guard, and Aislin Malcolm, a 5-10 freshman guard, were the catalysts for CV in the game’s final eight minutes, netting all 17 of their team’s points.

Wagner poured in 11 of her game-high 15 points then, while Malcolm contributed a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 11 points.

TJ junior guard Alyssa DeAngelo and senior point guard Jenna Clark led Thomas Jefferson (11-6, 7-3) with 11 points apiece. Clark clicked for nine points after halftime.

Two of the higher scoring teams in Class 5A staged a defensive battle in the game’s first half.

Chartiers Valley held leads of 11-5 and 18-14 after the first two quarters; the two teams were tied 24-24 after three quarters.

The Colts also won at home against Jaguars, 68-50, on Jan. 16.

CV holds a three-game lead over TJ and Trinity (9-7, 7-3) with four games remaining in Section 1-5A.

Trinity 49, Montour 33 — Kaylin Vernick, Ashley Durig and Courtney Dahlquist all had 11 points as Trinity (9-7, 7-3) won in Section 1-5A.

Gateway 45, Armstrong 25 — Mary Kromka and Lexi Jackson each scored 14 points to guide No. 4 Gateway (14-3, 8-1) to a Section 2-5A win.

Oakland Catholic 62, Albert Gallatin 37 — Alexis Sestric had 15 points, and Sierra DeAngelo scored 14 to help No. 3 Oakland Catholic (15-2, 9-1) to a win in Section 3-5A.

Blackhawk 95, Hopewell 67 — Mackenzie Amalia had 24 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead No. 2 Blackhawk (13-2, 8-0) to a Section 2-4A victory. Mady Aulbach had 14 assists to break the school record.

Siara Conley tallied 34 points for Hopewell (5-10, 2-7).

Central Valley 47, Ambridge 42 — Christiane Frye had 16 points, and Harlee Johns added 14 as No. 3 Central Valley (14-1, 7-1) won in Section 2-4A.

Keystone Oaks 66, New Castle 44 — In Section 2-4A, Gillian Piccolino had 29 points as Keystone Oaks (10-7, 5-4) earned a victory.

West Mifflin 57, Ringgold 46 — Shelby Genes had 22 points, and Lauren Yuhas added 21 as West Mifflin (6-8, 5-5) won a Section 3-4A game.

Washington 77, Beth-Center 47 — Carly Allen’s 25 points guided No. 5 Washington (13-4, 8-2) to a Section 2-3A win. The Little Prexies opened a 21-8 lead.

Laurel 63, Aliquippa 31 — Caroline Gibson had 24 points and surpassed 1,000 for her career as No. 5 Laurel (12-4, 9-1) won in Section 1-2A. Laurel clinched a playoff berth with the victory.

Bishop Canevin 77, Frazier 35 – Shamijha Price had 24 points to lead No. 1 Bishop Canevin (15-2, 9-0) to a Section 3-2A victory. Alyssa Pollice had 12 points and 13 rebounds for the Crusaders.

Quigley Catholic 46, Sewickley Academy 39 — Taylor Kirschner’s 24 points guided Quigley Catholic (9-6, 6-2) to a Section 1-A win over No. 4 Sewickley Academy (8-4, 5-3). Quigley used a 19-6 third-quarter run to take control.

West Greene 63, Jefferson-Morgan 17 — Kaitlyn Rizor had 16 points and surpassed 1,000 for her career as No. 1 West Greene (15-1, 9-0) won in Section 2-A.

Greensburg Central Catholic 60, Aquinas Academy 48 — Melina Maietta had 17 points, and Gia Scala added 16 to help No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic to a Section 3-A win.

Bella Skatell hit three consecutive 3-pointers in the fourth quarter to seal the win. She had 13 points, and Anna Eisaman added 14 for the Centurions (14-2, 7-0).

Elizabeth Russell scored 30 points for Aquinas Academy (6-7, 4-3).

Canon-McMillan 36, Hempfield 35 — Tamara Mathis had 14 points to guide Canon-McMillan (7-9, 4-6) to a win in Section 2-6A. Mathis hit two free throws, and Abby Daniels scored on a layup in the final minute to give the Big Macs the win. Jessica Persin had 15 points, and Sarah Liberatore added 13 for Hempfield (6-9, 1-9), which led 21-16 at halftime.

Penn-Trafford 83, Uniontown 30 — Bella Long had 19 points, and Maura Suman added 16 as Penn-Trafford (9-7, 6-4) won in Section 3-5A.

Greensburg Salem 43, Knoch 36 — Megan Kallock put up a game-high 26 points to lead Greensburg Salem (5-5, 9-7) to a Section 1-4A victory. Nevaeh Ewing scored 12 points and Madilyn Boyer added 11 for Knoch (8-9, 6-4)

Southmoreland 58, Yough 11 — Bailey Kuhns had 15 points, and Maggie Moore added 14 as Southmoreland (15-2, 9-1) scored a Section 3-4A victory over Yough (3-14, 0-10).

East Allegheny 60, Derry 39 — Amaia Johnson had 40 points to lead East Allegheny (11-5, 6-4) to a Section 3-3A victory. Destiny Roberts scored 13 points for host Derry (7-9, 5-5).

Riverview 67, Jeannette 17 — The Raiders had three players score in double figures, including Olivia Watts’ 13 points as Riverview rolled past Section 2-2A rival Jeannette (3-14, 2-7). Francesaca Lio finished with 11 points and Annie Betler chipped in with 10 for Riverview (6-9, 4-4). Jada Bass had 10 for Jeannette.

Freeport 62, Burrell 29 — The Class 4A No. 4 Yellowjackets held a 31-15 lead at the half and kept rolling as Sidney Shemanski put up a game-high 17 points in a Section 1-4A win.

Sisters Maddie and Samantha Clark scored 12 points apiece, and Harley Holloway added 11 for Freeport (14-2, 9-1).

Burrell (4-11, 2-8) was led by Allison Fisher’s 17 points and Kaylen Sharrow’s 10.

North Allegheny 51, Fox Chapel 32 — Lizzy Groetsch led North Allegheny (17-0, 10-0) with 22 points, and Rachel Martindale added 10 in a Section 1-6A win.

Hampton 52, Kiski Area 21 — Hannah Potter put up a team-high 14 points, but the Cavaliers (4-12, 0-9) lost in Section 2-5A play. Kate Schmitt led Hampton (3-13, 2-6) with a game-best 15 points.

Clairton 62, Leechburg 33 — The Bears led 30-12 at halftime and finished off a Section 3-A win. Iyanna Chapman scored 17 points, and Taylor Jackson added 14 for Clairton (13-3, 6-1). Maddie Ancosky and Kat Yurjevich each scored nine points for the Blue Devils (5-10, 2-5).

Boys basketball

Homer-Center 66, Ligonier Valley 65 — Ligonier Valley (15-2, 9-1) suffered its first loss in the District 6 Heritage Conference, falling at Homer-Center (5-10, 5-6).

Yough 61, California 59 — Jarett Bach and Gamal Marballie each scored 23 points to lift Yough (5-11) to a nonsection win. Malik Ramsey had 33 points for California (11-4).

Hockey

Hempfield 13, Penn-Trafford 2 — Daniel Pronin and Nicholas Lippa each had three goals to lead Hempfield (10-5) to a PIHL Class AA win. Tyler Bosack and Benjamin Leslie scored for Penn-Trafford (6-9).

Deer Lakes 5, Freeport 4 — The Lancers led 4-0 in the second period and held off a Yellowjackets rally for a PIHL Class A North Division victory. Shane Miller scored a hat trick and added an assist to help Deer Lakes (2-11-0-1) record its second victory of the season. Luke Norkus added a pair of goals for the Lancers. Freeport (5-8) got single goals from Case Haberstroh, Alex Colflesh, David Gaspersic and Addison Stewart.

Fox Chapel 4, Blackhawk 1 — Colby Zmenkowski scored the game-winner in the second period, and Michael Kilmer added a pair of goals and an assist for the Foxes in a PIHL Class A North Division matchup. Reed Troutman scored a goal and tacked on an assist, and goalie Nash Wedner made 28 saves for Fox Chapel (6-8). Daniel Frkuska scored for Blackhawk (2-12).

Greensburg Salem 12, Kiski Area 5 — Jason Zuhamesky tallied a hat trick for the Cavaliers, but the Golden Lions (4-10) scored a PIHL Class A East Division victory. Joshua Cook added a pair of goals for Kiski Area (1-13). Brendon Linderman scored four goals and added three assists, and Cole McNair recorded three goals and three assists to lead Greensburg Salem.
