High school roundup for Jan. 3, 2024: South Fayette hands 1st loss to No. 1 Baldwin

Stefano Vezio scored 12 points and Tyson Wright added 10 as South Fayette handed Trib HSSN Class 5A No. 1 Baldwin its first loss of the season in a Section 3-5a game Friday night.
The Lions (7-3, 4-0) jumped out to a 15-7 lead after one quarter and held off a Baldwin surge in the second half. Nathan Wesling scored 21 points for the Highlanders (9-1, 2-1).
Allderdice 80, Perry 19 – Led by 18 points from Lukas Stead, 15 from Matt Kossis and 11 from Trey Schachter, Allderdice (4-7, 2-0) defeated Perry (0-7, 0-1) in the City League.
Aliquippa 80, Riverside 18 – Three players scored in double digits for Aliquippa (6-1, 3-0) with Joshua Pratt leading the way 19 points in the Section 1-3A win over Riverside (6-6, 1-3). Jeremiah Pratt (15) and Qa’lil Goode (13) combined for 28 points.
Aquinas Academy 64, Cornell 20 – Sam Duer led with 18 points, Jake Guillen followed with 17 and Jonah Burchill added 11 for Aquinas Academy (9-1, 2-0) in a Section 1-A win. Walter Clarit scored 10 points for Cornell (1-8, 0-1).
Beaver 65, Hopewell 50 – Brady Mayo led Beaver (8-3, 1-1) with 24 points, Junior Marino followed with 22 and Logan Weiland added 13 in a Section 2-4A win. Zach Kovell scored 15 points and James Armstrong had 11 for Hopewell (4-5, 0-1).
Belle Vernon 63, Elizabeth Forward 59 – Zion Moore scored 22 points and Trevor Kovatch added 19 to lead Belle Vernon (8-4, 3-1) to a Section 3-4A win. It moved coach Joe Salvino into second place on the WPIAL’s all-time wins list with 731, trailing only longtime North Catholic coach Don Graham (801). Tyler Basic scored 16 points and Daniel Spence had 15 for Elizabeth Forward (8-3, 2-1).
Beth-Center 66, Carmichaels 34 – Parker Amos scored 16 points, Santino Revi and Jason Zellie had 14 points apiece and Brayden Hull added 11 to lead Beth-Center (6-4, 3-1) to a Section 3-2A win. Colin Andrews and Robbie Wilson-Jones scored eight points apiece for Carmichaels (2-7, 1-3).
Carlynton 75, Sto-Rox 49 – Devonte Dean (24) and Damiean Holloway (23) combined for 47 points in a Section 2-3A win for Carlynton (5-5, 1-1) over Sto-Rox (2-6, 0-2). Mikey Jenkins contributed 12 points in the win.
Carrick 73, Westinghouse 49 – Brayden Fisher poured in 41 points and Stephon Malloy added 16 to lead Carrick (5-4, 1-0) to a City League win. Souljah Cook and Jaymeir Wilson each scored 10 for Westinghouse (0-7, 0-1).
Central Catholic 67, Canon-McMillan 13 – Wills Kontul scored 17 points for Central Catholic (6-4, 3-1) in a Section 2-6A win. Michael Detrich scored seven points for Canon-McMillan (2-7, 0-3).
Central Valley 59, Ambridge 35 – Isaiah Jeter scored 19 points and Cameron DeVincentis added 11 to lead Central Valley (9-1, 2-0) to a Section 2-4A win. Julien Hubbard scored 15 points for Ambridge (2-7, 0-2).
Chartiers-Houston 71, Burgettstown 40 – Aaron Walsh led with 18 points and Justus Buckingham followed with 12 for Chartiers-Houston (8-2, 3-1) in a Section 3-2A win. Colton County scored 13 points and Parker Rommes had 10 for Burgettstown (3-7, 0-4).
Chartiers Valley 78, Lincoln Park 38 – Jayden Davis scored 18 points and Logan Helfrick and Luca Federico added 13 points apiece to lead Chartiers Valley (10-1, 3-1) to a Section 4-5A win. Aaron Wehner scored 11 points and Mason Rowan had 10 for Lincoln Park (2-7, 0-3).
Clairton 63, California 41 – Taris Wooding scored 16 points, Jajuan Bailey had 12 and Kahmani Parrotte added 10 to lead Clairton (3-3, 3-1) to a Section 1-2A win. Jacob Ziolecki scored 15 points and Caden Monticelli had 13 for California (2-8, 0-4).
Deer Lakes 63, Highlands 60 (OT) – Collin Rodgers hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lead Deer Lakes to a Section 1-4A win. Rodgers scored 20 points, Luca Mangieri added 18 and JT McCue had 13 for the Lancers (10-2, 4-0). Troy Bielak hit two free throws with 7.9 seconds left in overtime to tie the score for Highlands. Ty Hall scored 29 points and Carmine Lacava added 13 for the Golden Rams (1-8, 0-3).
Derry 76, West Mifflin 57 – Stanley Rajkovich hit for 32 points and John Wasnick added 21 to power Derry (7-3, 4-0) to a Section 3-4A win. Daven Reynolds scored 19 points, Jeremiah Dewberry added 11 and Jose Perez had 10 for West Mifflin (2-10, 1-2).
Eden Christian 61, Leechburg 50 – Mason Dean scored 22 points and James Wilkin and Samuel D’Ippolito added 16 apiece to help Eden Christian (3-7, 2-2) to a Section 2-2A win. Rocco Vigna scored 14, Chase Henry added 11 and Brady Rollinger had 10 for Leechburg (2-10, 1-2).
Fox Chapel 53, North Allegheny 39 – Led by 17 points from Caden Kaiser, 15 from Asher White and 14 from John Rehak, Fox Chapel (9-2, 4-0) picked up a Section 1-6A win. Carter Melzer scored 13 and John Jubeck added 11 for North Allegheny (5-5, 1-3).
Freeport 62, Valley 53 – Carson Kane scored 26 points and Mike Graczyk added 15 to lead Freeport (3-7, 1-2) to a Section 1-4A win. Mickael Allen scored 16, Tayshaun Hawkins followed with 15 and Taireke Davis had 13 for Valley (5-6, 0-4).
Franklin Regional 59, Laurel Highlands 45 – Connor Crossey scored 21 points and Jonah Johnston contributed 15 to power Franklin Regional (5-6, 1-3) to a section 1-5A win. Luke Martin scored 16 for Laurel Highlands (3-8, 0-4).
Gateway 60, Albert Gallatin 42 – Mykel Bruce-McCrommon scored 16 points, Jax Vovaris had 14 and Chris Settles added 10 to lead Gateway (5-4, 3-1) to a Section 1-5A win. Shymere Wilson scored 16 points for Albert Gallatin (7-4, 2-2).
Geibel Catholic 70, St. Joseph 57 – Evan Strimel led Geibel Catholic (6-4, 1-1) with 30 points and Eahn Stevenson added 12 in a Section 2-A win. Gabe Maltese scored 19 points and Ryan McCarthy had 17 for St. Joseph (5-5, 1-1).
Greensburg Central Catholic 67, Bentworth 29 – Brandon Martin hit for 20 points and Liam Gallagher followed with 15 to help Greensburg Central Catholic (10-1, 4-0) to a Section 1-2A win. Christopher Harper scored 10 for Bentworth (3-7, 0-4).
Greensburg Salem 56, East Allegheny 44 – Tyler Martin scored 17 points and Solomon Cain added 14 for Greensburg Salem (3-7, 2-2) in a Section 3-4A win. Jayden Patterson scored 14 and Kasonte Martin had 11 for East Allegheny (3-8, 0-3).
Hampton 66, Indiana 50 – Ray Kirsopp led with 20 points, Jonas Cupps followed with 16 and Andrew Butler added 15 for Hampton (4-6, 2-2) in a Section 2-5A win. Aaron Webb scored 16 points and Stanford Webb had 13 for Indiana (3-6, 0-3).
Jeannette 73, Frazier 33 – Marcus McGowan and Kymon’e Brown scored 16 points apiece to lead Jeannette (10-0, 4-0) to a Section 1-2A win. Xavier Odorisio-Farrow added 13 and Lonnie Greene had 12 for the Jayhawks. Brant Alekson led Frazier (2-9, 0-4) with 10 points.
Jefferson-Morgan 50, West Greene 35 – Led by 13 points from Houston Guesman, 12 from Jeremiah Robertson and 10 from Jase Bedilion, Jefferson-Morgan (8-2, 4-0) took sole possession of first place in Section 3-2A. Lane Allison scored 12 for West Greene (5-5, 3-1).
Keystone Oaks 56, Washington 45 – Joseph Colton had a triple-double with 14 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists and Erond Jakupi scored 26 points to lead Keystone Oaks (9-2, 2-0) to a Section 2-3A win. Vincent Johnson scored 12 points for Washington (2-7, 0-2).
Kiski Area 64, Armstrong 39 – Carson Heinle scored 21 points to send Kiski Area (4-6, 2-1) to a Section 2-5A victory. Amaree Gonzalez added 13, Colin Keller 11 and Andrew Zepeda 10 for the Cavaliers. Jaydon Oliver led Armstrong (4-7, 0-4) with nine points.
Laurel 46, Rochester 37 – Jayden Iorio scored 18 points and Tyler Shearer and Mason Ernst added 10 points apiece for Laurel (7-5, 1-3) in a Section 4-2A win. Jayvin Hemer scored 10 points for Rochester (4-7, 1-3).
Mohawk 70, Ellwood City 50 – Drew Wrona led with 23 points, Joey Nail followed with 18, Blake Logan had 12 and Bobby Fadden added 11 for Mohawk (8-2, 2-0) in a Section 1-3A win. Aaron Lake scored 24 points and Kaleb Servick had 13 for Ellwood City (7-5, 3-1).
Moon 79, Blackhawk 36 – Michael Santicola led with 21 points, Carter Tumulty followed with 19 and Amir Turner added 11 for Moon (9-2, 2-1) in a Section 4-5A win. Justin Shanor scored 13 points for Blackhawk (3-8, 0-4).
Nazareth Prep 53, Beaver County Christian 19 – Will Evans scored 17 points, Mikey Keyes had 11 and Christian Rucker added 10 for Nazareth Prep (7-2, 2-0) in a Section 1-A win. Hunter Mozley scored seven points for Beaver County Christian (5-3, 0-1).
Neighborhood Academy 65, Environmental Charter 29 – Kedron Gilmore scored 24 points, Shamar Simpson added 15 and Junior Onwubiko chipped in 10 to lead Neighborhood Academy (10-0, 2-0) to a Section 2-A win. Tyler Hurst led Environmental Charter (0-6, 0-2) with eight points.
Neshannock 63, South Side 23 – Tony Perrotta scored 19 points and Jake Rynd added 15 for Neshannock (8-1, 4-0) in Section 4-2A. Talan Anderton and David Kwiat each chipped in 11 for the Lancers. Andrew Corfield led South Side (7-4, 2-2) with 13 points.
Norwin 51, Mt. Lebanon 49 (OT) – Christopher McKnight hit the go-ahead layup with 25 seconds left in overtime to lead Norwin over Trib HSSN Class 6A No. 5 Mt. Lebanon in Section 2-6A. McKnight led the Knights (6-5, 2-2) with 21 points and Nathan Kuch blocked a game-winning 3-point attempt by Mt. Lebanon at the overtime buzzer. Jacob Zaber scored 15 points and Carter Gould had 13 for the Blue Devils (5-4, 1-2).
Penn Hills 82, Shaler 70 – Amon Hawthorne scored 27 points, Calix Clark had 19 and Cam Glenn added 14 to lead Penn Hills (4-6, 4-0) to a Section 2-5A win. Jordan Epps scored 19 points and Deron Nixon had 16 for Shaler (5-6, 2-1).
Pine-Richland 70, North Hills 57 – Grant Spacciapolli scored 22 points to lead Pine-Richland (5-3, 3-1) to a Section 1-6A win. Alexander Kastner added 15, Emery Moye 13 and Eli Catalano 11. Zach Pollaro scored 21 and Nathan Schanbacher had 16 for North Hills (2-9, 1-3).
Plum 67, Bethel Park 62 – Max Grice scored 22 points, including a 10-for-10 showing at the foul line, to lead Plum (6-4) to a nonsection win. Owen Proskin added 17 points, Trey McMurray had 12 and Will Beckner chipped in 10 for the Mustangs. Tanner Pfeuffer led Bethel Park (4-6) with 14 points. Will Sabatos had 12 and Michael Bruckner added 10.
Serra Catholic 63, Monessen 50 – Owen Dumbroski scored 26 points, Mark Johnson had 15 and Brayden Graham added 12 to lead Serra Catholic (9-1, 2-0) to a Section 2-A win. Davonte Robinson scored 15 points and Dennis Hawkins had 14 for Monessen (5-4, 0-2).
Seneca Valley 57, New Castle 54 – Four players eclipsed double digits for Seneca Valley (4-6, 3–1) with Andrew Omasits (19), Owen Congdon (12), Tyler Pepin (11) and Nico Santapau (11) combining for 53 points in a Section 1-6A win. Kai Cox had 20 points and Ralphie Blundo scored 11 for New Castle (7-1, 3-1).
Seton LaSalle 60, Steel Valley 43 – Noah Sear scored 23 points and Jaleel Wright added 15 to lead Seton LaSalle (3-8, 1-1) to a Section 3-3A win. Da’Ron Barksdale and Nate Yuhas scored 15 points apiece for Steel Valley (3-8, 1-1).
South Allegheny 82, Apollo-Ridge 41 – Drew Cook scored 23 points, Cam Epps followed with 19 and Josh Jackowski chipped in 16 for South Allegheny (10-1, 2-0) in Section 3-3A. Zane Beatty led Apollo-Ridge (3-9, 0-2) with 17 points.
Union 69, Shenango 57 – Maddox Thompson scored 18 points, Jamel Mitchell added 13 and Landon Eckert had 12 to lead Union (9-3, 3-1) to a Section 4-2A win. Joey Campoli scored 25 and Taegan Russo added 11 for Shenango (4-6, 2-2).
Uniontown 75, McKeesport 36 – Notorious Grooms and Calvin Winfrey scored 23 points apiece to lead Uniontown (9-3, 4-0) to a Section 1-5A win. Lamont Perkins scored 13 points for McKeesport (4-7, 2-2). Isaac Ellsworth and Kelan Milsom also scored 12 points apiece for the Red Raiders.
Upper St. Clair 70, Connellsville 15 – Kaamil Jackson scored 16 points and Ryan Robbins and Dane York added 10 each to lead Upper St. Clair (11-1, 4-0) past Connellsville (3-8, 0-4) in Section 2-6A.

Allderdice 79, Perry Traditional Academy 35 – Bailey White scored 15 points to lead four players in double figures for Allderdice (7-5, 2-0) in a City League win. Peyton Lynch and Rhyan Sledge each scored 14 and Seena Teshome added 13. Nikea Johnson led Perry (0-2, 0-2) with 10 points.
Beaver 59, Hopewell 36 – Ainsley Baker led with 22 points, Ava Wright followed with 13 and Emerson Connelly added 11 for Beaver (8-2, 2-1) in a Section 2-4A win. Addison Blosnick scored 13 points for Hopewell (1-8, 0-3).
Bentworth 39, Carmichaels 26 – Jesse Laskey scored 13 points for Bentworth (6-5, 2-0) in a Section 3-2A win. Ali Jacobs was the leading scorer for Carmichaels (0-10, 0-2) with seven points.
Carrick 44, Westinghouse 21 – Jocelyn Fisher scored 16 points to help Carrick (6-5, 1-0) past Westinghouse (3-6, 0-1) in the City League.
Canon-McMillan 54, Mt. Lebanon 51 – Sam Miller hit five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points to help Canon-McMillan (6-5, 1-1) hold off Mt. Lebanon (6-4, 1-1) in Section 2-6A. Lauren Borella added 13 points and Madison Clair had 11 for the Big Macs. Cali Green scored 17 and Payton Collins and Riley Collins each added 13 for the Blue Devils.
Chartiers Valley 51, New Castle 23 – Rachel Boehm scored 16 points and Emma Reynolds added 14 to lead Chartiers Valley (8-4, 4-0) to a Section 3-5A win. Rihanna Boice scored 11 points for New Castle (6-4, 0-3).
Ellis School 52, Jeannette 26 – Taelor Spencer scored 20 points, Julia O’Brien had 11 and Angelina Jones added 10 to lead Ellis School (5-3, 2-0) to a Section 4-2A win. Navarah Smith scored 17 points for Jeannette (3-6, 0-2).
Greensburg Central Catholic 63, Avonworth 39 – Erica Gribble led with 34 points and Jayla Peterson added 12 for Greensburg Central Catholic (7-2, 3-0) in a Section 2-3A win. Emma Obersteiner scored 17 points and Greta O’Brien had 13 for Avonworth (5-4, 2-1).
Oakland Catholic 47, Knoch 16 – Josie Fontana scored 15 points for Oakland Catholic (7-2, 3-1) in a Section 1-4A win. Neah Ewing scored eight points for Knoch (4-7, 3-1).
Peters Township 51, Trinity 33 – Natalie Wetzel scored 14 points and Daniela Radulovich chipped in 10 for Peters Township (10-1, 3-0) in a Section 4-5A win. Sutton Williamson scored 10 for Trinity (6-4, 1-3).
Pine-Richland 34, North Allegheny 25 – Cate Gentile scored 13 points and Rebekah Shaffer added 11 to lead Pine-Richland (3-7, 2-0) to a Section 1-6A win over North Allegheny (2-7, 0-2).
Seton LaSalle 49, Waynesburg 34 – Tiara Curry scored 21 points, Addie Lonergan had 15 and Amari Elliott added nine to lead Seton LaSalle (8-3, 4-0) to a Section 3-3A win. Avery Davis scored 18 points and Peyton Cowell had 10 for Waynesburg (6-3, 2-1).
Shaler 49, Penn Hills 10 – Reese Smetanka led with 19 points and Noelle Roth added 16 with four 3-pointers for Shaler (10-1, 3-0) in a Section 1-5A win. Caral Crawford scored eight points for Penn Hills (1-8, 1-2).
Union 58, Springdale 11 – Kylie Fruehstorfer scored 18 points and Addison Nogay added eight to lead Union (10-0, 4-0) past Springdale (5-7, 2-2) in Section 1-A.
Upper St. Clair 63, Norwin 53 – Meredith Huzjak scored 16 points and Mia Huzjak added 12 to lead Upper St. Clair (7-2, 2-0) in Section 2-6A. Kendall Berger scored 19 and Averi Brozeski contributed 10 for Norwin (4-5, 1-1).
