High school roundup for Jan. 3, 2026: Chartiers Valley takes care of Aliquippa

Julian Semplice scored 26 points to lead Trib HSSN Class 5A No. 3 Chartiers Valley to a 60-45 boys basketball victory over Class 3A No. 2 Aliquippa at The Rumble at North Allegheny on Saturday.

Logan Helfrick added 12 points and the Colts (9-1) jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter. Antonio Reddic scored 14, QaLil Goode added 11 and Cam Evanochko had 10 for the Quips (6-1).

Avella 60, Burgettstown 47 – Brayden Fuller scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures for Avella (8-2) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic. Nate Cilia added 14, Bryce Wright 13 and Cameron Ullom 12 for the Eagles. Blake Neal led host Burgettstown (1-9) with 13 points.

Cheswick Christian Academy 49, Plants and Pillars 47 – Joseph Rosio scored 21 points, including 19 in the second half, and Brady Rochkind added 16 points, including a pair of tiebreaking free throws with seven seconds left, to lead Cheswick Christian (4-5) in the Southwestern Christian Athletic Conference. Hal DeGraaf scored 16 points and Desmond Lowe added 13 for Plants and Pillars (3-3).

Central Catholic 49, Woodland Hills 39 – Enzo Khalil scored 16 points as Central Catholic (11-1) picked up another nonsection win. Scoop Smith led Woodland Hills (6-5) with eight.

Cumberland Valley 52, Gateway 46 – Led by 17 points from Sam Parsons, 13 from Aiden Diehl and 10 from Elijah Welsh, Cumberland Valley (6-3) picked up a nonsection win. Mykel Bruce-McCrommon led all scorers with 30 for Gateway (4-5).

Eden Christian 70, Highlands 63 – Mason Dean and Samuel D’Ippolito scored 19 points apiece and Michael Sample and Brady Salvia chipped in 12 points each to lead Eden Christian (9-3) to a nonsection win. Ty Hall scored 19, Troy Bielak followed with 16 and Carmine Lacava contributed 15 for Highlands (6-6).

Hickory 71, South Allegheny 65 – Noah Kovac scored 20 points to lead Hickory (7-1) past South Allegheny (7-5) at The Rumble at North Allegheny.

Kiski Area 45, McKeesport 36 – Amaree Gonzalez scored 13 points to lead Kiski Area past the host Tigers at the Slammin’ At The ‘Port showcase. The Cavaliers (6-6) led by two at halftime and pulled away in the second half. Lamont Perkins scored 11 and Jayir Bray had 10 for McKeesport (6-4).

Laurel Highlands 57, Connellsville 35 – Tyrone Burton scored 16 points and Luke Martin followed with 11 to lead Laurel Highlands (8-4) to a nonsection victory. Rocco Farrell led Connellsville (4-8) with nine points.

McDowell 79, Butler 62 – AJ Tarasovitch hit for 23 points, Liam Marsh added 19 and Zane Simons had 13 to boost McDowell (8-2) in a nonsection win. Stainton Forbes scored 24 and Andrew Gettinger chipped in 10 for Butler (4-7).

Mt. Lebanon 67, Bethel Park 45 – Liam Sheely sank eight 3-pointers on the way to scoring 39 points to lead Mt. Lebanon to a nonsection victory over Bethel Park. Carter Gould added 15 points – all on 3-pointers – for the Blue Devils (8-3). Joe Parisi led the Black Hawks (0-11) with 28 points and seven 3-pointers.

Neighborhood Academy 74, Beaver 53 – Kedron Gilmore scored 35 points to lead Neighborhood Academy (8-1) past Beaver (4-6) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown. Julius Page added 17 points in the win. Logan Weiland’s 21 points paced the Bobcats while Jake Peluso tallied 13 and Junior Marino added 10.

Obama Academy 64, Bishop Canevin 46 – Eric James scored 17 points, Elijah Rawlings added 11 and Naron Jackson II finished with 10 points and 10 assists to boost Obama Academy (5-5) at the Slammin’ at The ‘Port event in McKeesport. Drew Allen scored 11 and Raukeem Hawkins had 10 for Bishop Canevin (5-7).

Seneca Valley 71, Canon-McMillan 62 (2OT) – Owen Congdon had 24 points as Seneca Valley (6-5) defeated Canon-McMillan (5-6) in a double-overtime nonsection game. Ryan Priester added 16 points for Seneca Valley while Roman Koenemund hit for 26 points and Keegan Williams had 15 for Canon-McMillan.

Serra Catholic 59, Mt. Pleasant 40 – Brayden Graham scored 27 points to lead Serra Catholic (6-4) to the nonsection win against Mt. Pleasant (3-8).

Shady Side Academy 66, Hopewell 58 – Cam Mallory scored 20 points and Willis Price-Wheeler added 17 as Shady Side Academy (2-7) defeated Hopewell (4-5) in a nonsection game. James “Booboo” Armstrong scored a game-high 31 points for Hopewell.

Thomas Jefferson 71, Erie 69 – Nick Trklja scored 33 points to lead Thomas Jefferson (10-1) at The Rumble at North Allegheny. Kane Eggeron added 13 and Justin Fry had 10 for the Jaguars. Sebastian Wofford and Akeylen Pervice each scored 16 for Erie (9-1).

Washington 59, Fort Cherry 40 – Tristan Reed scored 22 points and William Callan followed with 11 to power Washington (5-6) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown. Connor Vansickle and Tyler Wolfe each scored 10 for Fort Cherry (5-4).

Girls basketball

Allderdice 56, McDowell 52 – Bailey White scored 31 points to lead Allderdice (8-3) to the nonsection win against McDowell. Seena Teshome added 13 points for Allderdice while Adison Rivera paced McDowell with 14 points.

Burgettstown 56, Weir (WV) 31 – Paige Klodowski hit for 30 points and Emilyn Harrison added 11 to lead host Burgettstown (9-3) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic. Bella Weber led Weir (1-8) with nine points.

Chartiers-Houston 52, McGuffey 40 – Ali Wingard scored 19 points to send Chartiers-Houston (9-1) to a win at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgsttstown. Eliana Janovich scored 18 for McGuffey (7-5).

Chartiers Valley 46, North Allegheny 45 (OT) – Mckenna Helfrick had 13 points and Alyssa Davis added 12 as Chartiers Valley (4-9) defeated North Allegheny (4-6) in an overtime nonsection game. Vange Balouris led North Allegheny with 14 points while Rae Shanahan added 11 points and Rosalia Varlotta chipped in 10.

Fort Cherry 44, Washington 28 – Julie Klose had 14 points and 10 rebounds while Gianna Bianchini also scored 14 points as Fort Cherry (7-4) beat Washington (5-4) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown. Allison Litman added 10 points for Fort Cherry while Olivia Woods led Washington with 12 points.

McKeesport 52, Obama Academy 10 – At Slammin’ at The Port, Adriana Allison had 14 points and Dannah Sebelia and Emily Eisenberg added 11 points each as host McKeesport (6-5) beat Obama Academy (5-4).

Mt. Lebanon 46, Union 28 – In nonsection play, Elizabeth Twyman scored 15 points to lead Mt. Lebanon (3-6) to victory over Union (9-3). Miera Gunn recorded nine points in the loss.

Mt. Pleasant 47, Ligonier Valley 17 – Ryleigh Drzal had 13 points and Morgan Gesinski and Grace Arrigo added 12 each as Mt. Pleasant (5-6) beat Ligonier Valley (3-7) in a nonsection game.

Neshannock 85, New Castle 18 – Payton Newman scored 20 points to lead four players in double figures for Neshannock (7-3) in a nonsection win. Lilly Cain added 13, Maddie Arrow 12 and Jaidon Nogay 11 for the Lancers. Rhiauna Brothers led New Castle (0-9) with eight points.

Pine-Richland 42, Bethel Park 28 – Mia LeDonne had 11 points as Pine-Richland (6-5) beat Bethel Park (7-3) in a nonsection game. Kat Boff scored 12 points for Bethel Park, which had a six-game winning streak snapped.

Plants and Pillars 45, Cheswick Christian Academy 23 – Joanna McCrady scored 12 points and Giselle Janicki added 10 to lead Plants and Pillars. Grace Kostick scored a game-high 17 points for Cheswick Christian.

Southern Garrett (MD) 48, Indiana 31 – In nonsection play, Emelee Parks scored 13 points and Jayden Weaver had 12 as Southern Garrett handed Indiana (11-1) its first loss of the season. Addy Hytton led Indiana with 15 points.

Thomas Jefferson 55, Upper St. Clair 33 – Emily Hirtz scored 16 points as Thomas Jefferson (10-2) beat Upper St. Clair (3-7) in a nonsection game. Emma Altavilla contributed 12 points while Maggie Spell had 10 points. Nadia Vetere led Upper St. Clair with 11 points.

Trinity 46, Penn Hills 28 – Sutton Williamson had 11 points and five blocks as Trinity (8-3) defeated Penn Hills (5-5) in a nonsection game. Vitt Emerich added 10 points for Trinity while Bently Layhue grabbed 10 rebounds. Milani Oliver led Penn Hills with 13 points.

Waynesburg 64, Beth-Center 32 – Emma Blair scored 20 points and hit four 3-pointers as Waynesburg (9-1) beat Beth-Center (4-6) in a nonsection game. Tess Pauley added 15 points and Chatham Knight tacked on 10 points. Kyleigh McDaniel had 11 points for Beth-Center and Alexia Fischer had 10.

West Allegheny 60, Our Lady of the Sacred Heart 29 – At Burgettstown, Emma Ruperto had 15 points as West Allegheny (7-2) downed OLSH (8-4) in the Chuckie Mahoney Classic. Bre Gubba and Alexis Santucci added 11 points each while Ella Smith chipped in 10. Macie Trombetta led the Chargers with 10 points.

Wilmington 53, Aquinas Academy 37 – Alyssa Flick scored 24 points on eight 3-pointers and Reese Bruckner added 12 points to help Wilmington (8-0) at The Rumble at North Allegheny. Carly Bezila led Aquinas Academy (7-1) with 15 points.

Boys wrestling

Bo Wood Tournament – Seneca Valley, West Mifflin and Plum each crowned two champions at Indiana.

Riley Smith (107) and Zach Hill (145) took titles for the Raiders, LaShawn Haley (127) and Cooper Dietz (160) were victorious for the Titans and Owen Campbell (152) and Frank Grazulis (285) topped the podium for the Mustangs.

Other champs from the WPIAL were Highlands’ Javeon Chambers (114), Penn Hills’ Daemon Phipps (121) and Chartiers Valley’s Michael Lawrence (172).

Tri-CADA – Canon-McMillan crowned five champs and cruised to the team title at West Greene. Lee Dreshman, fresh off a semifinals appearance at Powerade, took the 107-pound title. Gionno Gardner (127), Jon Emma (133), Collier Hartman (145) and Bryce Collins (189) also took first place.

McGuffey crowned two champs: Tucker Main (121) and Lucas Barr (139). Led by 114-pound champ Jackson Hoy, Trinity took second in the team race.

Other champs were Frazier’s Jonah Erdely (152), Bentworth’s Owen Ivcic (160), Jefferson-Morgan’s Alek Palko (172), Beth-Center’s Noah Layhue (215) and West Greene’s Colin Whyte (285).

Ed Driscoll MAC tournament – Behind a trio of champs, Moon claimed the team title at Laurel. Bryce Thomas (107), Liam Costa (172) and Michael Olszewski (189) topped the podium for the Tigers.

Laurel and Quaker Valley also had three champs each. Zach Rolli (148), Kolton Carlson (215) and Casey Wilson (285) took titles for the Spartans. Bruce Anderchak (121), Harper Sipes (145) and Matt Danna (160) were winners for the Quakers.

Led by a pair of champs – Michael Johnson (114) and Ricky Hammel (127) – West Allegheny finished second in the team race. Other champs were Central Valley’s Antonio Boni (133), Mars’ Olympic Serrao (139) and Montour’s Rook Smith (152).

Girls wrestling

Lady Falcon Invitational – Plum was the only school to crown multiple champs in Connellsville, with Saphia Davis winning at 136 pounds and Alaina Claassen reigning at 190. Both Mustangs pinned their opponents in the finals in less than a minute.

Plum finished second in the team race, however. The host Falcons took the top spot, led by 112-pound champ Trinity Moore.

Other WPIAL champs were Ringgold’s Rhiana Tolliver (118), South Park’s Anna Duncan (124), Burrell’s Katie Koehler (142), Brownsville’s Alexa Lewandowsky (155) and Beth-Center’s Bailey Bernot (170).
