High school roundup for Jan. 4, 2025: Beaver knocks Neighborhood Academy from unbeaten ranks

Brady Mayo scored 22 points to lead Beaver to a 71-70 victory at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic in Burgettstown on Saturday, handing Neighborhood Academy its first loss of the season.

Junior Marino added 16 points, Nick Krzeczowski had 15 and Jake Peluso contributed 12 for the Bobcats (9-3). Courtney Wallace hit five 3-pointers and scored 29 points for Neighborhood Academy (10-1). Syncer Nicholson chipped in 14 points.

Avella 66, Burgettstown 57 — Bryce Wright had 22 points and Nate Cilia added 14 as Avella (6-5) beat the host team at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown. Colton County had 14 points to lead Burgettstown (4-8).

Butler 61, Woodland Hills 59 – Tayt Lucas had 18 points and five assists and hit five 3-pointers as Butler (8-3, 1-3) beat Woodland Hills (4-5, 0-4) in Section 1-6A. Stainton Forbes added 16 points and and 12 rebounds for Butler. Scoop Smith led Woodland Hills with a game-high 21 points.

Cheswick Christian Academy 61, Plants and Pillars 28 – Joseph Rosio scored 26 points and Brady Rochkind added 20 points as Cheswick Christian Academy (4-5) downed Plants and Pillars in a nonsection game. Ace Laughlin recorded 10 points for Plants and Pillars.

Cumberland Valley 52, Gateway 43 – Nolan Buzalka scored 24 points and Creston Austin added 15 to lead Cumberland Valley (10-2) to a nonsection win. Mykel Bruce-McCrommon had 15 points and 11 rebounds for Gateway (5-5).

Fort Cherry 67, Washington 54 – At the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown, Shane Cornali scored 26 points to lead Fort Cherry (4-6) to victory against Washington (2-8). Evan Rogers added 10 points for Fort Cherry, which trailed by nine at halftime. William Callan led Washington with 20 points while Tristan Reed added 12 and Tayvonne France had 10.

Latrobe 53, Penn-Trafford 50 – Max Butler scored 26 points and sank four 3-pointers to lead Latrobe (11-1, 3-1) to the Section 1-5A against Penn-Trafford (4-5, 1-3). Ian DeCerb added 10 points for Latrobe while Zach Feldman, Brayden Stone and Tyler Anthony all scored 11 points for Penn-Trafford. The win was Latrobe’s sixth straight.

Mt Lebanon 55, Canon-McMillan 49 — Carter Gould had 14 points, and Sam Diebert and Dane Barber each scored 13 as Mt. Lebanon (6-4, 2-2) won a Section 2-6A game. Michael Detrich had 17 points for Canon-McMillan (2-8, 0-4).

North Catholic 75, Pine-Richland 52 – Jason Fredericks scored 23 points and Jude Rottmann added 19 to lead North Catholic (8-4) at the Don Graham Classic. Fredericks and Rottmann each hit five 3-pointers. Emery Moye led Pine-Richland (5-4) with 17 points.

OLSH 64, Hopewell 54 – Austin Avsec scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures for OSLH (7-3) at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic in Burgettstown. Tiernan McCullough had 15, Vann Kavals 14 and Jake Johnson 11 for the Chargers. James Armstrong scored 17 and Zach Kovella added 14 for Hopewell (4-6).

Quaker Valley 65, Weir (WV) 38 – Sam Chapman scored 25 points, Nic Cohen added 15 and Kolton Johnson chipped in 10 as Quaker Valley (7-2) defeated Weir at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown.

Girls basketball

Allderdice 77, McDowell 76 (OT) – Bailey White scored 24 points and Peyton Lynch and Ryhan Sledge added 20 points each as Allderdice (7-5) defeated McDowell in an overtime nonsection game. Kaylee Bithell paced McDowell with 21 points while Madison Zack added 17.

Chartiers-Houston 54, McGuffey 36 — Allison Wingard had 14 points, and Mylie McCrerey added 11 as Chartiers-Houston (8-2) won at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown. Madi Gaso tallied 10 points for McGuffey (8-3).

Fort Cherry 69, Washington 48 – Led by 15 points from Brooke Cornali and 10 each from Olivia Kemp and Bella Bianchini, Fort Cherry (9-2) picked up a win at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown. Olivia Woods led Washington (4-6) with 25 points.

North Catholic 51 Pine-Richland 42 – At the Don Graham Classic, Brady Wehner scored 18 points and Sam Weir and Lauren Reitz added 13 points each as host North Catholic (9-2) won its ninth straight game by defeating Pine-Richland (3-8). Cate Gentile scored 20 points in the loss.

Plants and PIllars 48, Cheswick Christian Academy 12 – Ruth Bartley scored 17 points and Elise Mathews added 10 to lead Plants and Pillars. Lauren Weng led Cheswick Christian (0-1) with five points.

South Fayette 57, Bethel Park 34 – Haylie Lamonde scored 17 points to lead four players in double figures for South Fayette (11-1) in a nonsection win. Ryan Oldaker had 13, Lailah Wright 11 and Ella Vierra 10. Sadie Orie led Bethel Park (6-5) with 14.

South Range (Ohio) 46, Mohawk 33 – Ceci Foster had 10 points as South Range (Ohio) beat Mohawk (3-7) in nonsection play. Mohawk’s Reagan Magno led all scorers with 15 points while Gianna Pezzuolo added 10 points.

West Allegheny 61, OLSH 52 – Emma Ruperto scored 15 points and Ella Smith added 13 to power West Allegheny (7-3) to a win at the Chuckie Mahoney Classic at Burgettstown. Claudia Ierullo hit for 25 points and Leah Parker had 14 for OLSH (9-2).

Wrestling

MAC championships – West Allegheny crowned four champions and got past Quaker Valley to win a close team race at Laurel. Michael Johnson (107), Thomas Bencho (121), Logan Slovick (139) and Cam Danna (285) won titles for West A. Quaker Valley had three champs: Bruce Anderchak (114), Matt Danna (145) and Marcus Richey (172).

Freedom’s Gavyn McCray (152) and Zeshawn Williams (189) also won championships, as did Central Valley’s Antonio Boni (127), Moon’s Cael Yanek (133), Ellwood CIty’s Gabe Lilly (160) and Laurel’s Kolton Carlson (215).

TRICADA championships – Led by 139-pound champion Lucas Barr and three third-place finishers, McGuffey won the team title at West Greene. Dominic Canali (127) and T.J. Allison (145) took titles to lead Trinity to a second-place finish in the team race.

Ringgold, which finished fourth, crowned the most champs with three: Leif Syrko (107), Evan Tolliver (121) and Jake Conroy (215). Peters Township had two champs – Nicholas McGarrity (114) and Darius McMillon (152) – as did Bentworth – Owen Ivcic (160) and Alex Rusilko (285).

Canon-McMillan’s Collier Hartman (133), Frazier’s Jackson Angelo (172) and Fort Cherry’s Braedon Welsh (189) also won titles.

Bo Wood tournament – Four WPIAL teams crowned two champions each at the annual tournament at Indiana.

Plum finished second in the team standings with Julien Sepelyak (172) and Frank Grazulis (285) claiming titles. Host Indiana was third with champs Nico Fanella (133) and Carter Putt (139).

Javeon Chambers (107) and Kyren Veasley (160) were champs for third-place Highlands and Elizabeth Forward was seventh behind first-place finishes from Preston Bubash (114) and Lucas Boyer (152).

Baldwin’s Ramil Islamov (145) also won a title. Mifflinburg won the team title with three individual champs.
