High school roundup for Jan. 7, 2018: Thomas Jefferson girls earn key Section 1 victory

The Section 1-5A girls basketball race is heating up, and Thomas Jefferson kept pace with No. 1-ranked Chartiers Valley atop the standings Monday night.
The Jaguars used a strong third quarter to defeat South Fayette, 59-51, on the road.
Alyssa DeAngelo had 15 points, Jenna Clark scored 13, and Dalaney Ranallo added 12 for Thomas Jefferson (8-3, 4-0), which stayed tied with the Colts (11-0, 4-0).
Clare Relihan scored 19 points for South Fayette (8-4, 3-2).
North Allegheny 56, Pine-Richland 25 — Rachel Martindale had 12 points as No. 1 North Allegheny (12-0, 5-0) won in Section 1-6A.
Mt. Lebanon 55, Canon-McMillan 37 — Jamey Napoleon had 18 points, and Patrice Smith added 15 as Mt. Lebanon (5-6, 4-1) won a Section 2-6A game. Tamara Mathis scored 15 for the Big Macs (5-6, 2-3).
Upper St. Clair 73, Baldwin 52 — Cassie Kartsonas scored 20 points to lead the way for Upper St. Clair (6-4, 3-2) in its Section 2-6A win.
Chartiers Valley 63, West Allegheny 45 — Mackenzie Wagner scored 20 points, and Megan McConnell added 16 for No. 1 Chartiers Valley (11-0, 4-0) in a Section 1-5A victory.
Neshannock 61, Avonworth 42 — Bella Burrelli had 24 points to lead No. 2 Neshannock (9-2, 4-1) to a Section 1-3A victory. Hayden Robinson had 18 points for Avonworth (6-4, 4-1).
Beth-Center 47, McGuffey 40 — Olivia Greco had 13 points, including four 3-pointers, as Beth-Center (7-3, 3-1) won in Section 2-3A.
Shady Side Academy 53, Carlynton 46 — Catherine Jewart scored 21 points to lift No. 5 Shady Side Academy (9-1, 5-0) to a Section 3-3A win.
Bishop Canevin 72, Chartiers-Houston 24 — Shamijha Price scored 28 points to lead No. 1 Bishop Canevin (9-2, 5-0) to a Section 3-2A win.
Quigley Catholic 75, Eden Christian 41 — Taylor Kirschner had 33 points, and Hailey Drutarosky added 29 as Quigley Catholic (6-5, 3-1) won in Section 1-A.
Southmoreland 46, Elizabeth Forward 40 — Maggie Moore and Bailey Kuhns had double-doubles to lead Southmoreland in a Section 3-4A win.
Moore scored 15 points, and Kuhns added 14. Both had 10 rebounds for the Scotties (10-2, 4-1).
Bri Spirnak had 13 points for Elizabeth Forward (6-5, 4-1).
Norwin 60, Butler 49 — Emily Brozeski scored 22 points to help No. 4 Norwin (9-1, 4-1) pick up a Section 1-6A win at Butler (5-5, 2-3). Jessica Kolesar added 14 points for the Knights.
Woodland Hills 65, Penn-Trafford 53 — Bella Long had 12 points, MacKenzie Powell scored 11 and Reaghan Panza added 10 for Penn-Trafford (5-5, 2-3), but the Warriors lost at Woodland Hills (5-6, 4-1) in a Section 3-5A game.
Latrobe 59, Uniontown 30 — Latrobe made a 27-3 run in the second quarter en route to a Section 3-5A victory. Carly Augustine had 15 points, and Rachel Ridilla added 12 for the Wildcats (7-2, 3-2).
McKeesport 72, Belle Vernon 53 — Nevaeh Stepanik had 18 points to lift McKeesport (5-5, 3-2) to a Section 3-4A victory. Lindsay Steeber had 17 points for Belle Vernon (7-4, 4-1). The Tigers used a 26-12 third-quarter surge to take control.
Mt. Pleasant 56, Ringgold 30 — Led by Chloe Jaworski’s 22 points, host Mt. Pleasant (3-8, 2-3) earned a Section 3-4A victory. The Vikings, who snapped a five-game losing streak, opened on a 15-6 run and led 30-18 at halftime.
West Mifflin 58, Yough 4 — In Section 3-4A, Shelby Genes had 14 points, and Lauren Yuhas added 12 as West Mifflin (4-4, 3-2) won at Yough (3-9, 0-5).
Ellis School 62, Jeannette 47 — Natalie Jasper had 27 points to lead Ellis School (9-2, 2-2) to a Section 2-2A win. Dymond Crawford scored 24 points to lead Jeannette (2-9, 1-4).
California 42, Monessen 34 — McKayla Boda had 14 points as California (6-4, 4-1) won in Section 2-A. Quitarah Hardison scored 14 for Monessen (1-9, 1-3). The Trojans held a 23-12 advantage in the second half.
Greensburg Central Catholic 55, Leechburg 30 — Melina Maietta had 23 points to guide No. 2 Greensburg Central Catholic (10-1, 3-0) to a Section 3-A win.
Anna Eisaman had 13 points, and Bella Skatell added 10 for the Centurions, who used a 23-7 run in the second quarter to take a 38-20 lead at halftime.
Deer Lakes 51, East Allegheny 36 — Behind 20 points from freshman Reese Hasley, Deer Lakes rallied in the second half for a win over Class 3A No. 4 East Allegheny in a Section 3-3A game.
Anna Solomon added 14 points for the Lancers (8-2, 4-1), who outscored East Allegheny, 32-15, in the second half. Deer Lakes held Wildcats star Amaia Johnson to nine points.
Abby Henderson led East Allegheny (7-3, 3-2) with 20 points.
Knoch 40, Burrell 22 — Skylar Burkett scored a team-high 15 points, and Knoch (6-4, 4-1) held a second consecutive opponent below 30 points to earn a Section 1-4A victory over Burrell. Kaylen Sharrow put up a game-high 16 points to lead Burrell (3-7, 1-4).
Brentwood 60, Riverview 25 — Natalie Murrio scored a game-high 21 points as No. 4 Brentwood blew past Riverview in Section 2-2A play. Abby Wolf scored 15 points and Anna Betz added 14 for Brentwood (8-3, 4-1). Sydney McDonough scored seven points to lead Riverview (4-7, 2-2).
Indiana 62, Highlands 21 — Indiana broke the game open with an 22-point first quarter and cruised past Highlands in a Section 1-4A matchup. Hope Cook put up a game-high 17 points to lead Indiana (4-7, 2-3). Sara Sawhook led Highlands (2-7, 0-5) with seven.
Aquinas Academy 41, St. Joseph 19 — Anni Truschel scored 14 points as Aquinas Academy defeated St. Joseph in Section 3-A play. Emilia Kartsonas added 11 points for Aquinas Academy (4-6, 2-1). Alyssa Swierczewski scored six points for St. Joseph (1-9, 1-2).
Boys basketball
Ambridge 67, Central Valley 29 — Liam Buck had 20 points and Aaron Hilzendeger added 19 as No. 3 Ambridge (8-4, 3-0) won in Section 2-4A.
Brownsville 67, Bentworth 59 — Nick Seto had 26 points, and Phil Pace added 25 as Brownsville (2-8) won a nonsection game. Shawn Dziak tallied 29 points for Bentworth (1-9).
South Side 87, Freedom 44 — Jake McDougal had 19 points, and Brandon Barber added 18 as South Side (8-4) won a nonsection game.
Hockey
Sewickley Academy 4, Freeport 3 — Logan Fullerton scored with 4 minutes, 36 seconds left in the third period to break a tie and lift the Panthers (7-5) to a PIHL Class A victory. The Yellowjackets (5-7) rallied to take a 3-2 lead into the third on goals from Alex Colflesh, Slade Ohl and Lukas Hooks. Freeport’s Sean Fennell and Sewickley Academy’s Thomas Sykes each made 33 saves.
Hempfield 12, Plum 2 — Jared Gerger scored six goals, including four in a row, as Hempfield defeated Plum in PIHL Class AA play. Christian Konieczka scored two goals and had one assist. Trent Gray recorded four assists for Hempfield (9-3). Anthony Adamski tallied one goal and one assist for Plum (3-7).
Meadville 7, Fox Chapel 3 — Nicholas Frantz scored five goals, including a natural hat-trick, as Meadville defeated Fox Chapel in Class A play. Frantz also added one assist, while Cohl Weber had a goal and three assists for Meadville (10-2). Colby Zmenkowski scored two goals, and Ronald Baird scored one for Fox Chapel (4-8).
Wrestling
Penn Hills 24, Riverview 18 — Hunter Shields and Michael Devito won by fall in the only two contested bouts of the night as Penn Hills beat neighboring Riverview in a nonsection match. Steve Tucibat and Justin Perkins won by forfeit for the Indians. Lucas Murphy, Gage Howard and Giovanni Savko won by forfeit for Riverview.
