Ryan Piekutoski went 3 for 3 with a double, homer and two RBIs and Andrew Malichky allowed one unearned run on three hits with four strikeouts in a complete game as WPIAL champ Seneca Valley defeated District 10 champ McDowell, 7-1, in a PIAA Class 6A first-round baseball game Monday.
Brandon Godleski homered and Micah Olayer doubled and drove in a run for the Raiders (18-6), who will take on Cedar Cliff in the quarterfinals Thursday. Calvin Hiltabidel doubled for McDowell (17-6).
Bethel Park 15, DuBois 1 – Mike Bruckner had three doubles and four RBIs, Ethan Stanhoff had two doubles and five RBIs and Bethel Park (20-5) scored 13 runs in the fourth inning of a Class 5A first-round win over DuBois (14-8). Eric Miehl went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Joey Levis drove in two runs for the Black Hawks, who will meet WPIAL champion Shaler in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Central Valley 3, Cathedral Prep 2 – Antonio Perry hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the eighth to lead Central Valley (14-11) to a Class 4A first-round win. Cameron Miller doubled and drove in a run and Will Ciucci pitched 1⅓ innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win for the Warriors, who will meet WPIAL champion Indiana in the quarterfinals Thursday. KJ Williams singled, doubled and drove in two runs for District 10 champion Cathedral Prep (17-6).
Clarion 3, Serra Catholic 2 – Winning pitcher Derek Smail hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning as District 9 runner-up Clarion (14-7) knocked out the WPIAL champs in the Class A first round. Max Black had two hits and Jake Jellison singled and drove in a run for Serra Catholic (21-3).
Eden Christian 4, DuBois Central Catholic 0 – Noah Emswiler threw a three-hit shutout with six strikeouts and went 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs to lead Eden Christian (17-5) to a Class A first-round win. Brett Feldman doubled for the Warriors, who will face Homer Center in the quarterfinals Thursday. Marek Hoyt hit a double for DuBois Central Catholic (18-4).
Elizabeth Forward 5, Punxsutawney 3 – AJ Grese delivered the game-tying RBI single and winning pitcher Cy Herchelroath followed with a go-ahead two-run homer as Elizabeth Forward (17-4) scored three runs in the top of the seventh to win in the Class 4A first round. Herchelroath allowed four hits and three unearned runs with seven strikeouts. Grese also doubled and finished with three RBIs, Jacob Peterspn had three hits and Charlie Nigut went 2 for 2 and scored three runs for the Warriors, who will meet East Pennsboro in the quarterfinals Thursday. Brody Stouffer had a single and an RBI for Punxsutawney (17-5).
Freedom 5, Bishop McCort 3 – Boden Hillard struck out nine in 5⅔ innings and Xavier Robbins followed with 1⅓ scoreless innings to lead Freedom (16-7) to a Class 2A first-round win. Erik Radkowski went 3 for 4 with a double for Bishop McCort (13-9). Mason O’Donnell tripled and drove in a run and Tommy Ward had a single and an RBI for the Bulldogs, who will face the Redbank Valley/Greenville winner in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Homer-Center 10, Carmichaels 0 – Colin Dunn went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and Domenick Smiko threw a five-inning, three-hit shutout with six strikeouts to lead District 6 champ Homer-Center (20-5) past Carmichaels (15-6) in a Class A first round win. Homer-Center will face Eden Christian in the quarterfinals.
Indiana 1, Bellefonte 0 – Ryan Okopal and Greg Minnick combined on a 12-inning one-hitter and Tim Birch doubled and scored on a walk-off RBI single by Ethan Shank in the 12th inning to lift WPIAL champion Indiana (23-1) to a Class 4A first-round win. Okopal gave up one hit and struck out eight in eight innings and Minnick fanned eight in four innings for Indiana, which will meet Central Valley in the quarterfinals Thursday. Payton Vancas had the lone hit for District 6 champion Bellefonte (12-9).
Lampeter-Strasburg 2, Peters Township 1 – Devin Aponte allowed one run in 4⅔ innings and Cooper Hillen followed with 2⅓ scoreless innings to lead District 3 champ Lampeter-Strasburg (20-5) to a Class 5A first-round win. David Oberschelp had two hits and Jackson Stocker drove in a run for Peters Township (15-10).
Mohawk 5, Titusville 4 – Jackson Chapman hit two doubles and scored three runs to lead Mohawk (13-11) to a Class 3A first-round win. Kameron Mong doubled and drove in a run for District 10 champ Titusville (18-4). Kamren O’Lare singled and pinch-runner Tallan Swanson scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to give the Warriors the lead for good. Mohawk will face Riverside in the quarterfinals.
Pine-Richland 8, Central Mountain 5 – Sam Heckert singled, tripled and scored twice, Breck Hemphill doubled and drove in two runs and Pine-Richland (21-4) jumped out to a 7-0 lead en route to a Class 5A first-round win. Anthony Mengine and Benjamin Husted each had a double and an RBI and Austin Cwynar had two hits and drove in a run for the Rams, who will face District 3 champ Lampeter-Strasburg in the quarterfinals Thursday. Isaiah Maldonado singled, doubled and drove in two runs for previously unbeaten Central Mountain (15-1).
Quaker Valley 22, Bedford 6 – Todd Kagle went 3 for 4 with a three-run homer, two-run homer and nine RBIs as Quaker Valley (16-7) cruised to a Class 3A first-round win. Kyle Rader singled, doubled and drove in two runs, Oscar Roig had three hits and three RBIs and Nolan Wagoner homered for the Quakers, who will take on South Park in the quarterfinals Thursday. Gabe Taylor tripled for Bedford (13-10).
Riverside 9, Huntingdon 0 – Christian Lucarelli, who did not pitch in the WPIAL playoffs to rest a sore arm, was back for a PIAA Class 3A first-round game in a big way, throwing a three-hit shutout with seven strikeouts to lead the Panthers (18-2) past Huntingdon (16-6). Dylan Meyer had two hits and two RBIs and Hunter Garvin and John Bowser each had two hits and drove in a run for the Panthers, who will face Mohawk in the quarterfinals Thursday.
South Park 5, Forest Hills 3 – Cooper Hochendoner struck out 11 in 6⅓ innings and Bryce Berzansky got the final two outs to lead South Park (16-7) to a Class 3A first-round win over Forest Hills (15-6). Andrew Mittleider had three hits and an RBI and Ryan Spitznagel collected two hits and drove in a run for the Eagles, who will meet Quaker Valley in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Tussey Mountain 7, OLSH 6 – Landon Myers doubled and drove in two runs and Connor Jones and Aidan Lane each singled and doubled to lead Tussey Mountain (14-10) to a Class 2A first-round win. Dean Douglass went 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBIs and Chad Minton doubled and drove in a run for OLSH (15-9).
Softball
Bald Eagle Area 8, Avonworth 2 – Sydney Thompson had a double and two RBIs and Kailey Eckert had two singles and two RBIs to lead Bald Eagle Area (20-3) to a Class 3A first-round win. Sydney Savatt had a double and RBI for Avonworth (16-6).
Berlin Brothersvalley 3, Carmichaels 0 – Sam Walker threw a two-hit shout and hit a double and triple to lead District 5 champion Berlin Brothersvalley (20-3) to a Class A first-round win. Kaitlyn Waggett and Carys McConnell had the hits for Carmichaels (16-2).
Blackhawk 9, Bellefonte 3 – Addy Ramer hit a home run and Keira Rodu and Brynn Hysong drove in two runs apiece to lead Blackhawk (15-6) to a Class 4A first-round win. Jaylee Lose and Sloan Moore doubled for Bellefonte (16-3). Kylie Prisuta struck out 13 for the Cougars, who will meet District 3 champ Kennard-Dale in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Cambridge Springs 9, West Greene 0 – Jaydan Simmons hit two home runs and winning pitcher Kayla Crawford struck out 10 to lead Cambridge Springs (16-2) past West Greene (16-5) in the Class A first round.
Chartiers-Houston 5, Cranberry 2 – Trailing 2-0 entering the seventh inning, Cherish Wilson worked a bases-loaded walk and Ella Richey followed with a grand slam to lead WPIAL runner-up Chartiers-Houston (21-2) past District 9 champ Cranberry (13-5) in a Class 2A first-round win. Meadow Ferri struck out 10 and allowed three hits for the Bucs, who will face District 10 champ Seneca in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Fort LeBoeuf 10, Elizabeth Forward 6 – Ibree Rodgers went 3 for 4 with a double, homer and three RBIs and Mirabela Zaczyk singled, homered and plated three to lead District 10 champ Fort LeBoeuf (18-3) to a Class 4A first-round win. Aubri Cimba singled, tripled and drove in a run, Sophia Pasinsky had two hits and two RBIs and Hannah Evans singled and doubled for Elizabeth Forward (16-6).
Penn-Trafford 3, Central Mountain 2 – Giuliana Youngo delivered an RBI double with one out in the first inning, giving Penn-Trafford the lead for good in a Class 5A first-round win over District 6 champion Central Mountain. Kylie Anthony brought in Bella Rubbe with a squeeze bunt and Lorryn Seppe followed with an RBI single. Central Mountain (15-2) got an RBI single from Cora Myers in the bottom of the first and a run-scoring double from Cirstyn Watson in the bottom of the third. Allyson Paulone threw a four-hitter with seven strikeouts for Penn-Trafford (21-3), which will meet District 3 champion Red Land in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Red Land 8, North Hills 1 – Addie Wagenheim went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Abby Snyder drove in three runs to lead District 3 champion Red Land (20-3) to a Class 5A first-round win. Alexa Edmunds, Emma Culver and Natalie Anzaldi hit a double apiece for North Hills (17-7).
Seneca 7, Riverside 2 – Olivia Matson and Haylee Farrell each drove in two runs and winning pitcher Sophia Primavere struck out 12 to lead District 10 champion Seneca (21-1) to a Class 2A first-round win. Adelaide Burry doubled and drove in a run and Saeryn Hoover had a single and an RBI for Riverside (10-10).
Sharon 2, South Park 1 – Mya Bundrant drove in the game-winning run as District 10 champion Sharon (22-1) scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to secure a walk-off Class 3A first-round win. Winning pitcher Madelyn Vogan gave up three hits and struck out 12 and helped her own case with a double and an RBI. Kylie Mettrick hit a double and Sydney Sekely struck out 11 for South Park (20-2).
St. Mary’s 4, Mohawk 2 – Sophia Surra went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Kelsie Fledderman had a double and RBI to lead St. Mary’s (18-3) to a Class 3A first-round win. Mylie Pistorius hit three doubles and Gianna Pezzuolo went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Mohawk (16-6).
Twin Valley 4, Shaler 3 – Hailie Barton hit the go-ahead RBI single in the top of the eighth to lead Twin Valley (21-5) past WPIAL champ Shaler (18-5) in the Class 5A first round. Winning pitcher Erin Cromwell struck out 12 and homered and Barton also homered for the Raiders. Alyssa Schaffold and Taylor London hit run-scoring doubles in a three-run seventh for the Titans. Bria Bosiljevac struck out 16.
Union 12, Purchase Line 0 – Mia Preuhs threw a six-inning no-hitter with 13 strikeouts to lead WPIAL champ Union (20-2) past Purchase Line (13-10) in the Class A first round. Preuhs, who no-hit Carmichaels in the WPIAL championship game, has allowed a total of one hit in four postseason starts, striking out 49 in 21 innings. She also doubled and homered against Purchase Line. Irelyn Fisher homered twice, Olivia Benedict doubled, homered and drove in three, Olivia Williams singled, doubled twice and knocked in a run and Maggie Joseph had a single, double and two RBIs for the Scotties, who will face DuBois Central Catholic in the quarterfinals Thursday.
West Allegheny 10, Solanco 4 – Savanna Benish had two home runs and four RBIs, Jenna Nolan homered and Alaina Pass had a triple and two RBIs to lead West Allegheny (17-5) past District 3 runner-up Solanco (24-3) in a Class 5A first round win. West A will face Twin Valley in the quarterfinals Thursday.
West Shamokin 11, Bentworth 5 – Madi Keirn went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs and Leah Grantz doubled and drove in two runs to lead District 6 champion West Shamokin (20-4) to a Class 2A first-round win. Sydney Gonglik went 2 for 3 with a triple and three RBIs for Bentworth (10-12).
