On the heels of a perfect game in the WPIAL finals, Zach Hare threw another no-hitter Thursday, striking out 13 and walking three to lead Riverside (19-2) to a 6-0 victory over Mohawk (13-12) in the PIAA Class 3A baseball quarterfinals at Seneca Valley.
Hare, who said he leaned on his fastball and curveball against Mohawk, hasn’t given up a hit in five postseason outings, running his streak of consecutive no-hit innings to 31⅓.
“I try my absolute best to try to not think about this streak, but it’s almost impossible to not think about it,” Hare said after the game. “I try to just go out there and just pitch to the best of my abilities for my team and not put added pressure on myself for no reason, but it’s inevitable that someone will get a hit at some point. I mean, it’s baseball. So I try to just pitch my game and be extremely grateful for what I have accomplished but not allow it to add pressure because a hit will come at some point.”
Hunter Garvin hit an RBI double in the third inning to give the Riverside the lead for good. Dylan Meyer went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, John Bowser went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI, and Sean Hayes had two hits and an RBI for the Panthers, who will face South Park in the semifinals Monday.
Riverside defeated South Park, 1-0 in 12 innings, in the WPIAL semifinals. Hare threw seven no-hit innings with 10 strikeouts.
“My body is very sore, but that is to be expected,” Hare said. “My recovery process these next few days is going to be extremely crucial in preparing myself for my next outing. I know I can’t waste a single day because we are going to need everyone available for this next game because South Park is very talented and it’s going to be a fight, just like our 12-inning game against them earlier this playoff season.”
