WPIAL champion Peters Township was held to its lowest point total of the season Saturday in the PIAA Class 5A girls basketball quarterfinals.
But that wasn’t because of anything the Indians did wrong.
To the contrary, Peters Township was in control of District 10 champion Cathedral Prep throughout, securing a decisive 35-25 victory and earning a WPIAL finals rematch with South Fayette in the PIAA semifinals next Saturday.
It was more a style of play issue than anything else.
“They do have a tendency to play very deliberately,” Peters Township coach Steve Limberiou said. ”Unfortunately, with no shot clock, you can do some of that, which leads to another discussion about how badly needed it is.
“I thought one of the keys was getting out to a lead. If you have a lead, it’s harder to do that and play like that. For the most part, we were in front all game. Maybe not by as much as would make us feel comfortable, but enough that it was hard to do that as much as they wanted.”
Natalie Wetzel led Peters (26-3) with 14 points.
Addie Biel, a 6-foot-2 impact player for Cathedral Prep (18-8), was held to nine points, including a 3-for-6 night at the foul line. Controlling Biel was a key component of the game plan, Limberiou said.
“Daniela (Radulovich) and Natalie were tremendous defensively,” he said. “One of our goals was keeping Biel off the free-throw line. She shoots a lot of free throws. I don’t think she shot many tonight. They made it really tough for her.”
