High school roundup for March 20, 2025: Southmoreland’s Makayla Etling homers twice in comeback win

Makayla Etling’s second home run of the game was a go-ahead two-run blast as Southmoreland scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat Latrobe, 12-11, in nonsection softball Thursday.
Taryn Hollis went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs, Riley Puckey singled and doubled and Abigail Grabiak doubled and drove in a run for the Scotties (1-2). Macie McHugh went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Sarah Blossey had three hits and four RBIs for the Wildcats (1-1).
Bethel Park 11, Patrick County (Va.) 10 – Audrey Campbell went 4 for 5 with a triple, home run and four RBIs, Kamiya Martin tripled and Julia Bitkowski went 3 for 4 to lead Bethel Park (1-0) in Myrtle Beach, S.C.
Hopewell 15, Sto-Rox 0 – Alana Covalt went 3 for 3 and Isabella Katkich and Kara Barkovich drove in two runs apiece to lead Hopewell (1-1) to a nonsection win over Sto-Rox (0-2).
Inspiration Academy 11, Elizabeth Forward 5 – Avery Bouquin went 4 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs for Inspiration Academy (Fla.) in Orlando, Fla. Addy Nihut and Julia Resnik each hit a double and Berlyn Holibaugh drove in two runs for Elizabeth Forward (1-1).
Shenango 8, South Side 0 – Kennedi Lynn threw a no-hitter and struck out 11 for Shenango (1-1) in a nonsection win over South Side (2-1). Zoe Offie hit two doubles and Sydney Byerly drove in three runs for the Wildcats.
South Park 10, Southmoreland 0 – Sydney Sekely and Reese Katich combined on a no-hitter to lead South Park (1-0) to a nonsection victory over Serra Catholic (0-2). Sekely struck out eight in four innings. Katich fanned four in two innings. Sekely also went 2 for 3 and tripled while Grace Kempton (3 for 3, two doubles, one home run and four RBIs) and Emma Hays (3 for 3, two home runs and four RBIs) combined for eight RBIs for the Eagles (1-0).
St. Anthony (N.Y.) 4, Elizabeth Forward 3 – Angelina Garcia hit a triple for St. Anthony’s in Orlando, Fla. Alivia Grimm drove in two runs for Elizabeth Forward (1-1).
Upper St. Clair 6, Western Beaver 5 – Alexandra Demas hit a walk-off RBI triple in the bottom of the ninth to lead Upper St. Clair (4-0) to a nonsection win. Demas also doubled. Brooklyn Kemp went 3 for 5 with a triple and Sydney Fisher singled, doubled and drove in a run for the Panthers. Kemp went the distance for the win, striking out 11. Kaitlyn Zele went 4 for 4 with a double and triple for Western Beaver (0-2).
Washington 20, Avella 2 – Zkyiah Hines went 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs, MacKenzie Patterson drove in four runs and Tateionna Warren homered for Washington (3-0) in a nonsection win. Avrey Rado and Madison Rush hit a double each for Avella (0-3).
West Allegheny 10, Ambridge 0 – Autumn Bielecki threw a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 11 to lead West Allegheny (1-2) to a nonsection win over Ambridge (1-1). Savanna Benish hit two doubles and Ava Benish, Ava Henke and Alaina Pass each hit a double for the Indians.
Baseball
Canon-McMillan 9, Trinity 7 – Collin Yeager homered and had three RBIs in a nonsection win for Canon-McMillan (1-1). Ben Peterson went 3 for 4 and homered while Teddy Burker had two RBIs for the Big Macs. Derek Falvo and Karson Hathaway combined to drive in four runs for Trinity (0-1).
Carlynton 8, McKeesport 7 – Isaac Anker drove in four runs and Graydon Harvey doubled for the Carlynton (2-1), which scored the winning run on an error during a five-run bottom of the seventh. Matt Miller doubled and drove in two runs for McKeesport (0-2).
Carmichaels 7, California 7 – Dillon Fisher doubled twice and drove in a run and Ryder Kreig had two RBIs as Carmichaels (0-1-1) and California (0-1-1) played to a nonsection tie. Caden Monticelli had two hits and two RBIs and Parker Gillen also drove in two runs for the Trojans.
Chartiers-Houston 8, Fort LeBoeuf 3 – Justus Buckinham drove in two runs and Aaron Walsh, Josiah Mouschlian, Paul Williamson and Julius Livingston each singled and drove in a run to lead Chartiers-Houston (2-0) to a nonsection win. Ethan Billey went 3 for 4 for Fort LeBoeuf.
Eden Christian 3, Laurel 1 – Noah Emswiler struck out 15 and allowed four hits in seven innings for Eden Christian (3-0) in a nonsection win. Jacob McBride singled for Laurel (0-1). Brady Hull doubled and drove in two runs for the Warriors.
Frazier 11, Southmoreland 1 – Chase Fulmer went 3 for 4 and Dailan McManus had two singles for Frazier (2-0) in a nonsection win. Brendan Geho went 2 for 3 for Southmoreland (1-1). Winning pitcher Brant Alekson struck out seven in seven innings for the Commodores.
Gateway 18, Penn Hills 2 – Miles Beavin led Gateway (2-0) with four RBIs, going 2 for 2 in a nonsection win. Jon Saunders (2 for 2 with two RBIs), Roman Jennings (2 for 3 with two RBIs), Martin Howard (2 for 2 with two RBIs), Grady Dunsmore (1 for 2 with two RBIs) and Donovan DeLuca (1 for 2 with two RBIs) all contributed to the Gators’ 18 runs. Anthony Sipple drove in a run for Penn Hills (0-2).
Keystone Oaks 10, Winchester Thurston 3 – Bryce Altenbaugh went 3 for 4, tripled and homered in a Keystone Oaks (2-0) nonsection win. Ian Bickel doubled and had two RBIs, while Shane Falcone also had a double for the Golden Eagles. Mason Witten had three hits, doubled and drove a run in for Winchester Thurston (2-1).
Knoch 8, Burrell 1 – Alex Eddy, Collin McSwaney and Mason Heller combined on a four-hitter in a nonsection win for Knoch (2-1). Eddy gave up a run on two hits with three strikeouts in four innings. McSwaney pitched two scoreless innings and Heller worked a scoreless ninth. Dylan Roth and Sean Morgan both singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Cooper Allison had a single, triple and two RBIs for the Knights (2-1). Parker Logut singled and knocked in a run for the Bucs (0-2).
McGuffey 6, Ligonier Valley 4 – Sam Stout singled, tripled and drove in two runs and winning pitcher Reno Presto also had two RBIs to lead McGuffey (1-1) to a nonsection win. Noah Knupp singled, doubled and drove in a run and Tyler Smith had three hits and an RBI for Ligonier Valley (0-2).
Peters Township 6, North Hills 0 – James Stewart and Matthew Scouvart combined to lead Peters Township (3-0) to a nonsection win. Stewart allowed one hit and struck out five in four innings. Scouvart allowed two hits in three innings. Zachary Sprinkle went 2 for 3 for North Hills (0-2). Zachary Miner doubled and drove in two runs for Peters.
Uniontown 8, Monessen 7 – Brayden Hinzy and Gary Smitly went 2 for 4 with a double and two RBIs each and Ethan White doubled to lead Uniontown (1-1) to a nonsection win. R.J. DiEugenio went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs for Monessen (0-3).
Boys lacrosse
Hempfield 8, Trinity 6 – Frank Somers scored three goals and Maddyn Bompiani added a pair to lead Hempfield to a nonsection win.
Girls lacrosse
Franklin Regional 9, Norwin 8 – Ingrid Varley scored four goals and Taylor Murphy and Isabella Ioannou each added a pair to lead Franklin Regional to a nonsection win.
Boys volleyball
Canon-McMillan 3, Moon 1 – Justin Peters had 12 kills and 21 assists and Jack Steele and Landon Patterson added nine kills apiece to lead Canon-McMillan to a nonsection win. Nolan Rosing had 12 digs and Aydin Winkelblech dished out 14 assists for the Big Macs.
