High school roundup for March 29, 2025: Latrobe gets past Hempfield in thriller

Luke Nipar-Smith went 2 for 2 with two runs scored and an RBI double in the top of the seventh to lift Latrobe to a 6-5 win over Hempfield in nonsection baseball Saturday.
Latrobe (3-3) built a four-run lead before Hempfield (2-3) tied it in the bottom of the sixth. Dylan Firmstone, Owen Shuglie and Colin Polechko all had two hits and an RBI for Hempfield. Latrobe’s Aaron Gaskey got the final out with runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh.
Central Valley 14, South Side 1 – Nathan Angelo went 2 for 2 with a home run and five RBIs to lead Central Valley (3-3) past South Side (3-2) in a five-inning nonsection game. Luke Lyons pitched all five innings, striking out four and giving up four hits.
Connellsville 3, Penn-Trafford 2 – Easton Bryner drove in two runs and Jeff Dunaway picked up the win as Connellsville (4-1) held off Penn-Trafford (4-2) in a nonsection matchup.Ethan Septak singled and drove in a run for the Warriors.
Laurel 4, Wilmington 3 – William Zwolenik’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth inning drove home the eventual winning run as Laurel (2-2) defeated Wilmington in nonsection play. Danny Leonard went 4 for 4 for Wilmington.
Peters Township 3, Moon 1 – Zachary Miner gave up five hits, struck out five and got Moon to ground into a double play to end the game in Peters Township’s Section 2-5A win. Six different players picked up singles for Peters (5-1, 1-1). Jarrod Golden had two hits for Moon (2-4, 2-2).
United Local (Ohio) 13, West Greene 3 – Jason Pratt went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs to lead United Local (Ohio) at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Hunter Gordy went 2 for 2 with an RBI for West Greene (0-6).
Softball
Avonworth 9, Columbiana (Ohio) 5 – At the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C., Sydney Savatt went 3 for 4 with a triple and an RBI as Avonworth (4-0) beat Columbiana (Ohio).
Chartiers-Houston 3, St. Mary’s Ryken (Md.) 2 – Lauren Rush hit a three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to lead Chartiers-Houston (6-0) past St. Mary’s Ryken at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Rush also doubled and finished 3 for 3. Meadow Ferri picked up the complete-game win, striking out 12.
Christian Academy of Knoxville 3, West Allegheny 2 – Gracie Kringen scored on an error in the bottom of the eighth inning to give Christian Academy of Knoxville the win against West Allegheny (3-3) at the Ripken Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Ella Borbeck pitched all eight innings for the win, striking out 15. Ava Henke hit an inside-the-park home run for West Allegheny while Autumn Bielecki took the complete-game loss, striking out three and giving up an unearned run.
Frazier 13, Charleroi 1 – Grace Vaughn homered and drove in three runs as Frazier (1-1) beat Charleroi (2-3) in nonsection play. Malana Burton went 3 for 4 with a triple and Addison Hiles went 2 for 3 with an RBI while picking up the five-inning complete-game win, striking out six.
Howland (Ohio) 3, OLSH 0 – Brooke Tatar threw a complete-game shutout, striking out 13, while going 3 for 3 with two triples, to lead Howland (Ohio) over OLSH (2-3) at the Ripken Experience in Pigeon Forge, Tenn. Madison Schmitz had an inside-the-park home run for Howland. Camryn Hummel took the loss in a complete game for OLSH.
Mt. Lebanon 10, Canon-McMillan 6 – In Section 1-6A, Lily Dwyer homered twice and drove in five runs to lead Mt. Lebanon (3-2, 1-1) over Canon-McMillan (2-3, 1-2). Lila Gaetano added a home run for Mt. Lebanon. Lyla Mowery had a home run and two RBIs for Canon-McMillan.
North Allegheny 11, Butler 1 – Leah Carlson tripled three times, drove in two runs and scored twice as North Allegheny (3-3, 2-1) beat Butler (0-6, 0-2) in a five-inning Section 1-6A game. Sammy Plotsko doubled twice and drove in three runs while picking up the win, giving up three hits and striking out seven over four innings.
Plum 8, West Mifflin 4 – Liana Yusko and Jaiden Gentile drove in two runs each as Plum (5-1) beat West Mifflin (2-3) in nonsection play. Adilee Salopek went 3 for 3 with an RBI for West Mifflin. Gentile and Danielle Pici each had two hits and Lily DeLuca doubled for the Mustangs.
West Allegheny 12, Xavierian (NY) 2 – In its second game of the day at the Ripken Experience, West Allegheny (4-3) scored 11 runs over the first two innings on the way to its five-inning win over Xavierian (N.Y.). Alexis Santucci homered twice and drove in seven runs. Ava Henke hit her second inside-the-park home run of the day and had two RBIs.
West Greene 4, Avonworth 3 – Payton Gilbert went 3 for 4 while tossing a three-hit complete game for West Greene (5-0) at the Ripken Experience in Myrtle Beach, S.C. Emmaline Beazell went 4 for 4 with an RBI for West Greene. Reese Long had a three-run homer for Avonworth (4-1).
Wilmington 8, Shenango 2 – Avery Lynn went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two runs scored as Wilmington beat Shenango (1-3) in nonsection play. Zoe Offie had both Shenango hits.
Girls lacrosse
Canon-McMillan 18, Trinity 3 – Bella Urso scored five goals to lead Canon-McMillan (4-2) to the nonsection win against Trinity (1-3). Halle Stimpson added three goals while Haylee Phenneger and Carli Phenneger tallied two goals each.
Sewickley Academy 10, Franklin Regional 8 – Emma Eannarino and Lauren Retlaff scored three goals apiece to lead Sewickley Academy to a nonsection win. Taylor Murphy had a hat trick for Franklin Regional.
