High school roundup for March 31, 2025: Knoch 7-footer Zane Pacek throws no-hitter

Zane Pacek, Knoch’s 7-foot right-hander, threw a complete-game no-hitter, striking out four, to lead the Knights to a 7-0 victory over Greensburg Salem (2-3, 0-1) in Section 3-4A baseball Monday.

Cody Stull homered and drove in three, Kyle Morgan doubled and knocked in a pair and Noah Glassic and Ryan McCurdy each had an RBI for Knoch (4-3, 1-0).

Ambridge 7, Hopewell 1 – Winning pitcher Joe Leseiko fanned 12 and allowed one run on three hits while Carter Mason smashed two home runs and drove in three to lead Ambridge (4-1, 2-1) to a Section 1-4A win. Liam Baker homered and finished with three RBIs and Jonathan Janicki tripled and plated a run for the Bridgers. James Armstrong doubled for Hopewell (0-6, 0-3).

Armstrong 6, Penn-Trafford 5 – Chase Jablonski hit a game-winning RBI single in the top of the eighth to lift Armstrong (2-4, 1-2) past Penn-Trafford (4-3, 2-1) in Section 1-5A. Brayden Wright collected two hits and two RBIs and Carson DeLano got the win for the River Hawks. Brayden Stone went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBIs for the Warriors.

Avonworth 15, Steel Valley 0 – Winning pitcher Cooper Scharding smacked a solo home run, Michael Libbon tripled and knocked in a run and Declan Ehrin and Jack Dolan each doubled and drove in a run to power Avonworth (5-1, 1-0) to a shutout win against Steel Valley (1-2, 0-1) in Section 2-3A. Jordan Smith had the only hit for the Ironmen.

Beaver 5, Hampton 1 – Logan Hill knocked in a pair of runs and winning pitcher Ty Butler gave up one run on three hits and struck out nine in a complete game as Beaver (5-1, 3-0) defeated Hampton (0-5, 0-3) in Section 1-4A. Zach Virbitsky drove in the only run for the Talbots.

Bethel Park 5, Trinity 1 – Ethan Stanhoff went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs and Mike Bruckner doubled and knocked in a run as Bethel Park (6-1, 3-0) defeated Trinity (1-3, 1-2) in Section 2-5A. Kaden Hathaway hit a double and drove in a run for the Hillers. Dylan Schumacher struck out eight for the Black Hawks.

Butler 12, North Hills 2 – Trent Best and Owen Boring each drove in two runs and Boden Lenyk went 3 for 4 with a double as Butler (4-0, 1-0) cruised to a Section 1-6A win. Cooper Ravenstahl doubled for North Hills (2-4, 0-1). Winning pitcher Nolan Stefaniak struck out eight for the Golden Tornado.

Central Catholic 7, Seneca Valley 6 – Reece Hankinson delivered the game-winning single and Central Catholic (3-0, 1-0) scored twice in the top of the seventh to squeak by Seneca Valley (2-3, 0-1) in Section 1-6A. CJ Proch homered and drove in two, Yaniel Heredia doubled and knocked in a run and Carson Pettyjohn picked up a win for the Vikings. Brandon Godleski homered and had three RBIs and Micah Olayer tripled and drove in a run for the Raiders.

Connellsville 5, Montour 3 – Grayden Gillott knocked in two runs, Jayden Mickesn and Matthew Firestone each had two hits and an RBI and Ethan Porreca got the win as Connellsville (5-1, 1-0) defeated Montour (1-3, 0-1) in Section 4-5A. Andrew Porto homered and drove in two for the Spartans. Firestone picked up a save for the Falcons.

Eden Christian 10, Serra Catholic 5 – Winning pitcher Noah Emswiler tripled and drove in three runs, Jacob Janicki tripled, doubled and had two RBIs and Brady Hull doubled twice and drove in one as Eden Christian (6-0, 3-0) scored all its runs in the bottom of the sixth to double up Serra Catholic (5-2, 2-1) in Section 3-A. Max Black, Jake Holmes and Owen Dumbrosky each doubled and drove in a run for the Eagles.

Gateway 15, McKeesport 0 – Jon Saunders threw a three-inning no-hitter, striking out eight, and slapped a triple and knocked in a run as Gateway (4-1, 1-0) rolled to a Section 4-5A win against McKeesport (0-6, 0-1). Roman Jennings and Ryan Deselich drove in three runs apiece for the Gators.

Indiana 12, Highlands 2 – Mark Collinger tripled and drove in a run, Caden Force went 2 for 2 with a double and Greg Minnick picked up a win as Indiana (5-0, 1-0) defeated Highlands (3-1, 0-1) in Section 3-4A. Luke Lattus doubled and knocked in a pair for the Golden Rams.

Keystone Oaks 7, McGuffey 3 – Winning pitcher Nathan Rohe struck out 10 while Roman Keaney, Ethan Shartle and Brady McDine each drove in a run as Keystone Oaks (3-3, 1-2) beat McGuffey (2-3, 0-1) in a Section 4-3A matchup. Lincoln Johnson drove in two for the Highlanders.

Latrobe 15, Penn Hills 0 – Winning pitcher Jack Stynchula threw four shutout innings, giving up one hit and striking out five, while also driving in two runs to lead Latrobe (4-3, 1-2) to a Section 1-5A win. Mason Leonard went 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Hayden Porterfield, Andrew Hantz and Cooper Basciano each knocked in two runs for the Wildcats. Gavin Tierney had the lone hit for Penn Hills (0-6, 0-3).

Mars 5, New Castle 4 – Zachary Rozman gave Mars (2-2, 1-2) its first Section 3-5A win of the season by smacking an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth for a walk-off win. Daniel Costanza doubled and knocked in a pair of runs, Austin Kuremsky doubled and drove in a run and Braden Schmitt earned the win for the Fightin’ Planets. Carlo DeSalvo had two hits and a pair of RBIs for New Castle (0-4, 0-1).

Mt. Pleasant 11, Deer Lakes 1 – Connor Drzal had two hits and four RBIs and Dane Firmstone and winning pitcher Jacob Kitz each doubled and knocked in a run to lead Mt. Pleasant (5-2, 3-0) to a Section 3-3A win. James Gall smacked a solo home run and Noah Shurina went 3 for 3 with a double for Deer Lakes (2-3, 2-1). Kitz struck out six in six innings for the Vikings.

Neshannock 9, Laurel 7 – Lucca Mezzanotte doubled twice and drove in three runs and Ryan Cameron doubled and drove in three as well to power Neshannock (3-0, 1-0) to a Section 2-2A win. Winning pitcher Jake Rynd and Joey Veronesi each doubled and knocked in a run for the Lancers. Kolton Carlson went 3 for 4 with a double and three RBIs for Laurel (2-3, 1-2).

Pine-Richland 7, Fox Chapel 4 – Jake Waddell slugged a solo home run while Sam Heckert and Thomas Kapanowski each drove in two runs as Pine-Richland (5-0, 3-0) beat Fox Chapel (3-3, 0-3) in Section 3-5A. Jeremy Haigh homered, doubled and knocked in two runs and Tristan Blum also plated two runs for the Foxes. Keegan Deihl got the win for the Rams.

Shady Side Academy 5, South Allegheny 3 – Winning pitcher Soren Cooper drove in two runs and Ty McCaskey went 2 for 4 with an RBI as Shady Side Academy (2-4, 1-0) scored two runs in the top of the eighth to come away with a Section 2-3A win. Caleb Jackowski and Dillion Pomocki each drove in a run for South Allegheny (1-4, 0-1).

West Mifflin 4, Yough 1 – Jackson Fite tossed six shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out six, while Nate Fleming and Caden Wills each drove in a run as West Mifflin (5-3) beat Yough (0-4) in nonsection play. John Steban singled and scored for the Cougars. Chase Maggio went 2 for 3 for the Titans.

Winchester Thurston 20, Aquinas Academy 7 – Austin Lenhardt-Barley went 3 for 4 with a double and five RBIs, Sam Hammons knocked in four and Benji Smuckler doubled and drove in three as Winchester Thurston (4-1, 3-0) blew the game open with 11 runs in the fifth to defeat Aquinas Academy (2-2. 2-1) in Section 2-A. Henry Hynds knocked in two and Gio Spotts doubled and drove in a run for the Crusaders. Lucas Picher got the win for the Bears.

Softball

Beaver 3, North Catholic 0 – Taylor Young threw a two-hitter and struck out six for Beaver (6-1, 1-0) in a Section 3-4A win. Young also hit two doubles. Kennedy Brown struck out 12 for North Catholic (4-1, 1-1). Bridget Mayo drove in two runs for the Bobcats.

Bethel Park 14, Peters Township 7 – Taylor Striegel went 3 for 4 with a double, home run and four RBIs, Madison Timms hit three doubles and a home run and Kamiya Martin homered to lead Bethel Park (5-0, 1-0) to a Section 4-5A win. Addie Brunette went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Emery Grimes hit two singles for Peters Township (2-4, 0-1).

Elizabeth Forward 15, Uniontown 3 – Alivia Grimm went 2 for 5 with a home run and four RBIs, Julia Resnik clubbed a solo home run and doubled and Berlyn Holibaugh went 4 for 5 with four RBIs as Elizabeth Forward (3-2, 1-0) cruised to a Section 2-4A win. Lauren White hit a solo home run and Emmaleigh Noah doubled for Uniontown (2-3, 0-1). Julia Johnson struck out five and got the win for the Warriors.

Greensburg Salem 7, Indiana 6 – Winning pitcher Alle Scarpa struck out 16 for Greensburg Salem (5-0) in a Section 1-4A win. Scarpa hit two doubles and drove in two runs. Kylee Cass hit a home run, Maggie Cunningham tripled and homered and Rylin Blystone doubled for Indiana (1-6). Tymara White went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs and Marley Perrone doubled for the Golden Lions.

Hempfield 10, Canon-McMillan 0 – Riley Miller and Julia Varhola combined to throw a five-inning one-hitter for Hempfield (6-0, 3-0) in a Section 1-6A win. Miller struck out eight and allowed one hit, an infield single, in four innings. Varhola struck out three in one inning and went 2 for 2 with a double, home run and two RBIs. Hailey Swope singled for Canon-McMillan (2-4, 1-3). Lauren Howard went 3 for 3 with a double and triple, Allie Cervola homered and Reagan Reamer tripled for the Spartans, who threw no-hitters in their previous two games.

Kiski Area 16, Gateway 2 – Kyla Hutcherson and Kaylee Morrow hit a double and drove in two runs apiece and Samantha Matson drove in three runs to lead Kiski Area (1-3, 1-0) to a Section 2-5A win. Malia Clemens and Samantha Robi doubled for Gateway (2-1, 0-1).

Neshannock 6, Union 4 – Winning pitcher Addy Frye struck out 13, walked one and allowed only four hits in 10 innings for Neshannock (3-0) in a nonsection win. Frye went 2 for 3 with two doubles and an RBI. Gabby Quinn hit a home run and had two RBIs for the Lancers. Mia Preuhs struck out 14 and allowed three hits for Union (3-1). Olivia Benedict hit a home run for the Scotties.

New Castle 16, Penn Hills 0 – Zoe Shields threw a three-inning one-hitter and struck out six to lead New Castle (3-3, 1-0) past Penn Hills (2-4, 0-1) in a Section 1-5A win. Olivia Hood went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and four RBIs and Mya Dwyer, Gabby Mangieri, Aliyah Stalczynski and Keara Mangieri hit a double apiece for the Hurricanes.

Plum 12, Mars 3 – Liana Yusko went 5 for 5 with a double, home run and five RBIs, Brooke Bernosky went 3 for 4 and Lily Deluca homered to lead Plum (6-1, 2-0) to a Section 1-5A win. Abby Robinson went 2 for 3 with a home run and two RBIs for Mars (1-6, 0-1).

Riverside 18, Freedom 3 – Emma Stockton went 3 for 3 with a double and two RBIs for Riverside (1-3, 1-0) in a Section 1-2A win over Freedom (0-3, 0-1).

Seneca Valley 3, Norwin 2 – Winning pitcher Lexie Hames struck out 19 and allowed two runs on three hits for Seneca Valley (4-0, 2-0) in a Section 1-6A win. Demi Wardzinski and Madelyn Kugler singled and scored for Norwin (1-5, 1-2). Lauren Folino doubled and drove in a run for the Raiders.

Sewickley Academy 16, Carlynton 0 – Gabby Edmunds went 2 for 2 with a double and four RBIs, Marie Bigi went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs and Sophie Crichton and Charlotte Andrews doubled to lead Sewickley Academy (2-0) to a nonsection win. Lily Barber hit a double for Carlynton (0-4). Winning pitcher Charlotte Andrews threw a one-hitter and struck out seven for the Panthers.

Shaler 14, Fox Chapel 0 – Winning pitcher Bria Bosiijevac threw a five-inning no-hitter and struck out 13 for Shaler (3-2, 1-0) in a Section 1-5A win over Fox Chapel (4-2, 0-2). Jayla Antomachi went 2 for 2 with a triple and four RBIs, Emily Spears hit two doubles and Taylor London hit a two-run homer for the Titans.

South Park 2, Bentworth 0 – Winning pitcher Sydney Sekely struck out 12 and allowed no runs on five hits for South Park (5-0) in a nonsection win. Sydney Gonglik hit a double for Bentworth (3-3). Emma Hays hit a home run and drove in two runs for the Eagles.

Steel Valley 19, Sto-Rox 1 – Darwin Brooks went 3 for 3 with a double, triple, home run and three RBIs, Ana Weher went 2 for 2 with a double and three RBIs and Lundyn Seay tripled for Steel Valley (2-2) in a nonsection win over Sto-Rox (0-5).

Trinity 11, Albert Gallatin 1 – Maddie Ray and Kaylee Danneker combined to throw a no-hitter for Trinity (3-3, 1-0) in a Section 4-5A win over Albert Gallatin (2-2, 0-1). Danneker also hit a grand slam. Ally Krenzelak went 2 for 2 with a triple and three RBIs and Gabrie Humphreys doubled for the Hillers.

Waynesburg 7, Jefferson-Morgan 3 – Gina Teadrow struck out 13 and allowed three runs on three hits for Waynesburg (3-3) in a nonsection win. Teadrow went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Ashlynn Snyder drove in two runs for Jefferson-Morgan (2-1). Breanna Kerr had a double, home run and two RBIs for the Raiders.

West Mifflin 2, Belle Vernon 0 – Winning pitcher Rylie Dobnak struck out 15 and allowed five hits for West Mifflin (3-3, 1-0) in a Section 2-4A win. Dobnak went 2 for 3 with a double. Mailey Hayes went 2 for 2 with a double for Belle Vernon (2-5, 0-1). Brianna Dobnak, Kayleigh Tatters and Mia Bey hit a double apiece for the Titans.

Boys lacrosse

Indiana 14, Freeport 4 – Garrett Goodrich scored eight goals and Parker Bowersox added three to help Indiana to a Section 2-2A win.

Penn-Trafford 13, Seton La Salle 4 – Elias Habura scored four goals, Carter Vandrak collected three goals and four assists and Mason Nigut, Abram Glaser and Josh Maga each scored twice in a Section 1-2A win for Penn-Trafford.

Girls lacrosse

Canon-McMillan 14, Baldwin 9 – Haylee Phenneger, Abby Neugebauer and Ava Miller scored three goals apiece and Bella Urso and Halle Stimpson added two goals each for Canon-McMillan in a Section 1-3A win over Baldwin.

North Hills 15, Knoch 4 – Maddie Korbel scored six goals while Jillian Wilkonson, Mallory Lutz and Maddie Dembrowski scored two goals apiece as North Hills (2-4) defeated Knoch (2-4) in nonsection play. Lauren Patsilevas, Georgia Krogman and Sarah Mollenauer each added a goal for the Indians.

Pine-Richland 21, Butler 7 – Cate Gentile collected six goals and five assists to lead Pine-Richland to a Section 2-3A win. Mallory Boivin added four goals and two assists, Madeline Mill scored three and Kendyll Jerry had two for the Rams.

Trinity 14, Yough 10 – Kennedy Tracey scored eight goals and had an assist and Georgia Poach added a pair of goals and an assist to lead Trinity (2-3, 1-1) to a Section 1-2A win over Yough (1-3, 0-2). Taylor Phillips, Myah Agmon, Avery Powell and Zaleigha Steadman each added a goal for the Hillers.

Boys volleyball

Shaler 3, North Hills 0 – Jacob Crissman and Nate Myers had eight kills each, Justin Truong recorded 19 digs and Aiden Smith handed out 26 assists to lead Shaler to a nonsection win.
