High school roundup for May 12, 2025: North Hills rallies past Baldwin in Class 5A 1st-round thriller

Natalie Anzaldi hit the go-ahead RBI single in the sixth inning to lead No. 4 North Hills to a 4-3 victory over No. 13 Baldwin in a first-round WPIAL Class 5A softball game Monday at North Allegheny.

Anzaldi finished 2 for 3 with three RBIs and Emma Culver singled, doubled and drove in a run for the Indians (16-4), who will face No. 12 Fox Chapel in the quarterfinals. Winning pitcher Abigail Sutton struck out six and walked none. Camryn Temme homered and Kaylee Smolko singled and doubled for the Highlanders (13-6).

Beaver 8, Belle Vernon 1 – Sami Springman went 2 for 2 with a double and RBI and Bella Marino hit two singles and drove in a run to lead No. 6 Beaver (14-5) to a Class 4A first-round win. Kenzie Springer, Olivia Peabody, Abby Hojdila, Rhiannon Rabassi and Cali Coups all singled and drove in a run for the Bobcats, who will face No. 3 Knoch in the quarterfinals. Lauren VanDivner singled and drove in a run and Mailey Hayes, Kaylee Sypolt, Katie Sokol, Mia Zubovic had hits for No. 11 Belle Vernon (9-12).

Blackhawk 14, Western Beaver 4 – Kylie Prisuta went 2 for 3 with a double, home run and three RBIs, Mia Yenges had a double and four RBIs and Eva Parris hit three doubles for No. 5 Blackhawk (12-5) in a Class 4A first-round win. Bella Colatriano and Izzie Lefebvre homered for No. 12 Western Beaver (6-13). The Cougars will face No. 4 West Mifflin in the quarterfinals.

Indiana 3, Uniontown 2 – Anna Carnavale went 2 for 3 with an RBI and Maggie Cunningham singled and drove in a run to lead No. 7 Indiana (10-11) to a Class 4A first-round win. Alivia Noah and Emmaleigh Noah hit two singles apiece for No. 10 Uniontown (10-9). Winning pitcher Samantha Martin struck out 12 and Sophia Boyer also drove in a run for the Indians, who will face No. 2 Hampton in the quarterfinals.

Shaler 8, Connellsville 0 – No. 2 Shaler (15-4) opened the playoffs with a bang thanks to marquee performances from Bria Bosilijevac and Jayla Antomachi. Bosilijevac threw a no-hitter and struck out 16 and Antomachi hit a grand slam and a three-run homer to key a Class 5A first-round win over No. 15 Connellsville (12-7). Emily Spears also singled and drove in a run for the Titans, who will meet No. 10 Trinity in the quarterfinals.

Thomas Jefferson 1, Armstrong 0 – Morgan Alisesky hit an RBI single in the fourth inning and Aubrey Shaffer threw a six-hit shutout with six strikeouts to lead No. 6 Thomas Jefferson (13-6) to a Class 5A first-round win. Natalie Ziegler doubled for No. 11 Armstrong (13-8). The Jaguars will face No. 3 West Allegheny in the quarterfinals.

Trinity 7, South Fayette 0 – Maddie Ray threw a two-hit shutout with three strikeouts to lead No. 10 Trinity (12-9) to a Class 5A first-round win. Ally Krenzelak went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and Hanna Suhoski had a double and an RBI for the Hillers, who will meet No. 2 Shaler in the quarterfinals. Liv Bonacci hit a double and Maddie Cavenaugh singled for No. 7 South Fayette (13-7).

West Allegheny 8, Latrobe 3 – Ava Henke and Katelyn Cook homered to lead No. 3 West Allegheny (15-4) to a Class 5A first-round win. Maddie Munchinski went 3 for 4 and Miley Williams doubled for Latrobe (10-9), which took a 2-0 lead into the third inning. Irena Santoro and Savanna Benish singled and doubled for the Indians (15-4), who took control with four-run innings in the third and fifth. West Allegheny will meet No. 6 Thomas Jefferson in the quarterfinals.

West Mifflin 9, North Catholic 6 – Rylie Dobnak hit the go-ahead RBI single and Aubrey Jaskulski and Bella Simak both walked with the bases loaded to key a tie-breaking, three-run sixth inning for No. 4 West Mifflin (14-6) in a Class 4A first-round win. Alana McEnaney hit a home run and Mary Kotwica doubled for No. 13 North Catholic (8-9). Mia Bey tripled and drove in three runs for the Titans, who will face No. 5 Blackhawk in the quarterfinals.

Baseball

Carrick 3, Obama Academy 1 – Eli Wittman threw a complete-game four-hitter with 10 strikeouts to lead Carrick (9-6) to a win in the City League championship game. Wittman and Brayden Fisher each had two hits and Lucas Geiger and Blake Andrews singled and drove in a run apiece for the Raiders. Roman Gray singled and scored for Obama Academy (9-5).

Keystone Oaks 5, South Allegheny 2 – Ian Bickel went 3 for 4 with an RBI and Anthony Liebro had two singles and an RBI for No. 18 Keystone Oaks (9-9) in a Class 3A win. Caleb Jackowski went 2 for 3 with a double for No. 15 South Allegheny (7-10). The Eagles will meet No. 2 Avonworth in the first round Tuesday.

Shady Side Academy 7, McGuffey 4 – Brady Trischler and Charlie Wanless singled and doubled and Brian Firman and Michael Bogdanovich drove in two runs apiece to lead No. 16 Shady Side Academy (8-13) to a Class 3A win. Sam Stout doubled and drove in two runs and Lincoln Johnson doubled for No. 17 McGuffey (10-10). The Bulldogs will face No. 1 Riverside in the first round Tuesday.

Girls lacrosse

Quaker Valley 12, Indiana 3 – Alexa Westwood had five goals and an assist and Lucy Roig scored four times to lead No. 7 Quaker Valley (9-4) to a Class 2A first-round win over No. 10 Indiana (10-6). Kate Miller had a goal and three assists, Lily Millet added a goal and an assist and Emily Reiner made five saves for the Quakers, who will take on No. 2 Seton LaSalle in the quarterfinals Wednesday.

In other first-round games Monday, No. 8 Oakland Catholic defeated No. 8 Franklin Regional, 11-9, No. 5 Hampton took care of No. 12 Trinity, 12-1, and No. 6 South Fayette outscored No. 11 Sewickley Academy 21-4.
