High school roundup for May 13, 2025: Gateway tennis survives challenge in 1st round of states

WPIAL champion Gateway survived a challenge from District 3 third seed Manheim Township in the PIAA Class 3A boys tennis first round Tuesday, coming away with a 3-2 victory.
The Gators (13-0) swept the singles matches to finish off Manheim Township (12-3), getting straight-set wins from Adam Memije, Zidaan Hassan and Logan Memije. Gateway will face Central Bucks East in the quarterfinals Friday.
Cathedral Prep 5, South Park 0 – Freshman Bradley Ng won at No. 1 singles without losing a game to lead District 10 champ Cathedral Prep (16-3) to a Class 2A first-round win over WPIAL third-place finisher South Park (10-3).
North Allegheny 5, Allderdice 0 – WPIAL runner-up North Allegheny (16-2) won five matches in straight sets to defeat City League champ Allderdice (10-2) in the Class 3A first round. Advaita Sircar didn’t drop a game at No. 1 singles. Evan Kaufman and Srivatsev Thirumala and the doubles teams of Adhav Ramadas/Nick Scheuring and Shivum Telang/Ronit Ginde also won for the Tigers, who will meet Unionville (17-3) in the quarterfinals Friday in Hershey.
North Catholic 5, Carrick 0 – WPIAL champion North Catholic (13-2) didn’t drop a game in sweeping Carrick (7-1) of the City League in the Class 2A first round. Winners for the Trojans were Justin Garvey, Alex Weber and Alex Lopez Foubert at singles and the doubles teams of Jake Sinclair/Paddy McCabe and Brennan Lord/Jackson Schlegel. North Catholic will meet DIsgrict 3 runners-up Conrad Weiser in the quarterfinals Friday in Hershey.
Valley 5, Punxsutawney 0 – Valley (14-1) turned in a dominant performance against District 9 champion Punxsutawney (9-4) in the Class 2A first round, winning all five matches in straight sets. Landon Harclerode didn’t drop a game at No. 1 singles. Tyler Quinn and Baxter Diehm at No. 2 and No. 3 singles and the doubles teams of Jake Ervin/Josh Serena and Jackson Dameron/Maddox DeAntonio also won in straight sets. The WPIAL runner-up Vikings (14-1) will face District 1 champion Lower Moreland (14-2) in the quarterfinals Friday at Hershey Racquet Club.
Lacrosse
Indiana 6, Franklin Regional 3 – Parker Bowersox and Payne McClure had two goals each to lead No. 9 Indiana (10-8) to a Class 2A first-round win. Matthew Kukura, Cole Stackiewicz and Liam Murphy scored for No. 8 Franklin Regional (9-9). Indiana will face top-seeded South Fayette in Thursday’s quarterfinals.
Elsewhere in Class 2A boys action, No. 12 Chartiers Valley knocked off No. 5 Sewickley Academy, 7-4, No. 7 Bethel Park beat No. 10 Quaker Valley, 12-10, and No. 6 Penn-Trafford eliminated No. 11 Shaler, 13-8.
In Class 3A girls, No. 12 Norwin took out No. 5 Fox Chapel, 11-10 in overtime, No. 8 Shady SIde Academy got past No. 9 Bethel Park, 13-8, No. 7 Penn-Trafford defeated Ni. 10 Butler, 10-7, and No. 6 Peters Township dropped No. 11 North Allegheny, 15-9.
Boys volleyball
Canon-McMillan 3, Central Catholic 1 – Henry Klinar had 15 kills and Landon Paterson added 14 kills and five blocks to lead No. 7 Canon-McMillan (15-2) to a Class 3A first-round win.
Justin Peters recorded 12 kills and 28 assists, Aydin Winkelblech dished out 17 assists, Nolan Rosing had 15 digs and Jack Steele finished with five kills and six blocks for the Big Macs, who will take on No. 2 Seneca Valley in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Elsewhere in Class 3A, No. 8 Mt. Lebanon defeated No. 9 Gateway, 3-1, No. 4 Hempfield took out No. 13 Upper St. Clair, 3-1, No. 5 Pine-Richland swept No. 12 Baldwin, 3-0, and No. 3 Latrobe took care of North Hills, 3-0.
In Class 2A, No. 9 Hopewell upended No. 8 Derry, 3-1, No. 5 South Fayette swept No. 12 McKeesport, 3-0, No. 7 Thomas Jefferson finished off No. 10 Deer Lakes, 3-0, and No. 6 Mars handled No. 11 South Park, 3-0.
