High school roundup for May 5, 2025: Shaler quiets New Castle’s bats

Haley Machajewski homered and knocked in two runs to lead Shaler to a 3-1 victory over New Castle in Section 1-5A softball Monday.
Winning pitcher Bria Bosiljevac gave up one run on two hits and fanned 14 in a complete game for the Titans (13-4, 11-1). Keara Mangieri homered for the Red Hurricanes (8-10, 5-7).
Avonworth 18, Beaver Falls 0 – Pitchers Ali Linhart and Savannah Hoffman combined to throw a three-inning no-hitter as Avonworth (13-4, 7-3) trounced Beaver Falls (1-9, 1-9) in Section 2-3A. Alexandra Eberhardt homered and knocked in three runs and Emma Obersteiner went 2 for 3 with a home run and a pair of RBIs for the Antelopes.
Blackhawk 10, Beaver 9 – Zoey Linder went 3 for 4 with five RBIs, Eva Parris tripled, doubled and knocked in two runs and Keira Rodu tripled and plated a run as Blackhawk (10-5, 8-4) beat Beaver (12-5, 7-4) in Section 3-4A. Sami Springman homered and drove in three runs and Abby Hojdila also homered and knocked in two runs for the Bobcats.
Canon-McMillan 8, Pine-Richland 4 – Addy Downey hit a grand slam and winning pitcher Brooke Bumer struck out 10 to lead Canon-McMillan (11-8, 9-7) to a Class 6A win. Kadence Merigo and Sophie Carl singled and doubled for the Big Macs. Calle Henne homered twice and Abbey Laurent doubled and homered for Pine-Richland (12-7, 9-7).
Connellsville 4, Uniontown 3 – Connellsville (12-6) scored the game-winning run on a Maggie Orndorff groundout in the sixth to edge out Uniontown (10-7) in nonsection play. Cali Leichliter and winning pitcher Kendal King each drove in a run for the Falcons. Emmaleigh Noah doubled and drove in a run for the Red Raiders.
Elizabeth Forward 5, Thomas Jefferson 3 – Aubri Cimba collected two hits and two RBIs, Addy Nigut doubled and drove in a run and Julia Johnson got the win in a nonsection victory for Elizabeth Forward (13-2). Rylee Nemchek doubled and plated two runs for Thomas Jefferson (11-6).
Forest Hills 11, Latrobe 6 – Taylor Snyder homered and Anna Spangler had two hits and four RBIs for Forest Hills in a nonsection win. Mya McHugh doubled and Sara Blossey had two hits for Latrobe (9-8).
Frazier 10, Belle Vernon 2 – Emme Travalena went 3 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs, Addison Hiles also had three hits and Grace Vaughn and Gracen Hartman each singled, tripled and knocked in a run to lead Frazier (13-2) to a nonsection win. Kaylee Sypolt homered and Paisley Hibner singled, doubled and knocked in a run for Belle Vernon (9-10).
Gateway 14, Carrick 2 – Alayna Dawson homered and knocked in two runs, Malia Clemens doubled twice and drove in a pair and Savannah Boden doubled and plated a run for Gateway (4-12) in a rout of Carrick (0-3) in nonsection play. Jayda Rose tripled and knocked in a run for the Raiders. Meghan Marsh got the win for the Gators.
Jeannette 16, Leechburg 1 – Grace Stein struck out nine in three innings, Peyton Pitzer singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Mia Sarpolis had a double and an RBI for Jeannette (11-4, 9-1) in a Section 3-A win. Addy Gardina, Ava Ferretti and Adalyn Zanotto had hits for Leechburg (7-7, 5-5).
Moon 5, Ambridge 1 – Sydney Ray knocked in a pair of runs and Katie DeMarco went 3 for 3 as Moon (7-8) scored five runs in the third and cruised to a nonsection win. Sadie Rushman plated a run for Ambridge (2-13). Abbie Warnagiris got the win for the Tigers.
Northern Garrett (Md.) 10, Albert Gallatin 0 – Alex Fike went 2 for 3 with a double while winning pitcher Bailey Champlin struck out six as Northern Garrett shut out Albert Gallatin (4-12) in nonsection play. Jenna Myers, Kylee Augustine, Hannah Dunham and Ellie Seese all had a single for the Colonials.
Norwin 8, North Hills 4 – Miley Harrison singled and doubled twice and Addison Grimes and Diem Wardzinski each had a double and two RBIs to help Norwin (7-11) to a nonsection win. Isabella Deering and Makenna Black also doubled and drove in a run for the Knights. Abigail Sutton had three hits, including a homer, and three RBIs for North Hills (14-4).
Quaker Valley 10, New Brighton 2 – Keira Myers and Leah Weisser each drove in two runs while Addison Davis picked up a win as Quaker Valley (4-10) defeated New Brighton (5-11) in nonsection play. Sundi Fazio went 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs for the Lions. Olivia Hoose doubled and drove in a run for the Quakers.
Penn-Trafford 3, Franklin Regional 2 – Cameron Ponko hit a two-run homer and Kylie Anthony hit a solo shot in a three-run third inning to lead Penn-Trafford (16-1, 12-0) in a matchup of top teams in Section 2-5A. Winning pitcher Allyson Paulone struck out eight. Toryn Fulton tripled and Adrianna Martz and Ava Rhoten drove in runs for Franklin Regional (13-6, 9-3).
Plum 10, Burrell 0 – Sydney Pici went 2 for 2 with a home run and four RBIs and Danielle Pici went 2 for 3 with a homer to lead Plum (13-5) to a nonsection win. Mackenzie Marotta threw a five-inning, three-hit shutout for the Mustangs. Bella Stewart and Pyper Ferres doubled for Burrell (7-13).
Seneca Valley 11, Butler 4 – Abby Kalkowski went 3 for 4 with a pair of home runs, a double and five RBIs and winning pitcher Lexie Hames gave up one hit and struck out 10 in 4⅔ innings as Seneca Valley (15-2, 13-2) cruised to a Section 1-6A win against Butler (3-16, 3-13). Paige Volz homered and drove in two for the Raiders. Shylee Karenbauer doubled and knocked in three for the Golden Tornado.
Sewickley Academy 15, Cornell 2 – Winning pitcher Charlotte Andrews struck out 12 while also doubling and knocking in a run to help power Sewickley Academy (10-3, 7-2) to a Section 1-A win over Cornell (5-7, 2-6). Gabby Edmunds hit a solo home run and Sophie Crichton doubled and drove in two runs for the Panthers.
South Allegheny 15, Brentwood 0 – Sydney Gordon knocked in three runs while Cameran Colecchi and Aubrey Pacewicz each brought home two as South Allegheny (14-2, 10-0) blanked Brentwood (6-7, 4-5) in Section 2-2A. Carma Coberly had the only hit for the Spartans. Winning pitcher Carrera Conley fanned five in five innings for the Gladiators.
South Side 16, Rochester 1 – Karis Dunham homered and knocked in two runs, Madison Morrow doubled and plated a pair of runs and Halina Matijevich had an RBI as South Side (9-7, 6-3) rolled to a Section 1-A win over Rochester (1-14, 0-10). Pitcher Maya Ringhoff got the win for South Side.
Southmoreland 4, Trinity 3 – Makayla Etling drove in the game-winning run on a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning as Southmoreland (9-6) held on for a nonsection win. Riley Puckey knocked in a pair of runs and winning pitcher Zoey Murphy doubled for the Scotties. Gabriella Humphreys homered and drove in two runs for Trinity (10-9).
West Mifflin 9, Bethel Park 0 – Winning pitcher Rylie Dobnak struck out 13 while Mia Bey tripled and knocked in two runs and Kaleigh Tatters and Caleigh Ignat each drove in a run as West Mifflin (12-6) shut out Bethel Park (9-8) in a nonsection matchup.
Western Beaver 5, Central Valley 4 – Winning pitcher Izzie Lefebvre homered, doubled and had three RBIs and Kaetlin Caylao smacked a solo homer to lead Western Beaver (5-11, 4-7) past Central Valley (6-8, 4-7) in Section 3-4A. Aubrey Grater and London Banks each drove in a run for the Warriors.

Allderdice 8, Bishop Canevin 3 – Satyan Chickering singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Zack Shook had a double and two RBIs for Allderdice (12-6) in a nonsection win. Aaryn Edwards had two hits and a run scored for Bishop Canevin (9-6).
Beaver 2, North Catholic 1 – Tyler Kisling went 3 for 3 and Ty Butler got the win as Beaver (11-6, 8-3) held on to beat North Catholic (7-7, 4-7) in Section 1-4A. Matthew Madonna and Owen Beatrice each doubled for the Trojans.
Belle Vernon 6, West Mifflin 2 – Parker Lind struck out 13 in a complete game, Lucas Judy singled and drove in a pair of runs and Zach Plymire had a single and an RBI to help Belle Vernon (13-3, 9-2) to a Section 2-4A win. Jayvon Thompson singled and knocked in a run for West Mifflin (14-5, 9-2).
Blackhawk 7, Hopewell 2 – Dylan Smith homered and drove in two runs, Connor Welsh doubled and knocked in three and winning pitcher Carter Davis struck out eight in four innings to send Blackhawk (8-5, 7-4) to a Section 1-4A win. Charles Smetana singled and drove in a run for Hopewell (5-13, 4-7).
Carmichaels 2, West Greene 0 – Brayden Andrews and Robbie Wilson-Jones each drove in a run while winning pitcher Colin Andrews struck out seven in a complete game shutout for Carmichaels (11-4, 8-3) against West Greene (3-13, 2-9) in Section 1-A. Will Shipman and Xavier Lucey each had two hits for the Pioneers.
Central Catholic 6, Louisville 3 – CJ Proch doubled and knocked in three runs, Landon Greene doubled and brought home a run and Liam Pekarsky got the win for Central Catholic (6-11) in a nonsection defeat of Louisville.
Central Valley 1, Hampton 0 – Daniel McIntosh threw a complete-game, four-hit shutout with eight strikeouts and Nathan Angelo drove in the game’s lone run as Central Valley (10-8, 7-4) defeated Hampton (4-13, 3-8) in Section 1-4A. Will Ciucci doubled and scored for the Warriors.
Connellsville 5, Gateway 1 – Keegan Lott doubled and knocked in two runs, Noah Zawisian had two hits and an RBI and Ethan Porreca picked up a win for Connellsville (11-5, 6-4) in a Section 4-5A victory over Gateway (6-13, 2-8). Roman Jennings plated a run for the Gators.
Deer Lakes 2, Yough 0 – Anthony Smith threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts to power Deer Lakes (8-6, 7-4) to a Section 3-3A victory. Smith and Ben Shurina drove in runs for the Lancers. Hard-luck losing pitcher Aidan Shaffer gave up two runs, one earned, on four hits in six innings.
Eden Christian 16, Steel Valley 2 – Winning pitcher Noah Emswiler went 3 for 3 with a triple and an RBI while striking out eight and allowing two runs, one earned, on one hit to lead Eden Christian (13-3) to a nonsection win. Christian Watkins doubled and had four RBIs while Bardy Hull and Josh Tilden each drove in two runs for the Warriors. Daevon Gaynor had the only hit for Steel Valley (5-11).
Elizabeth Forward 12, Uniontown 0 – Cy Herchelroath struck out 13 as he tossed a no-hitter while slugging a home run and driving in three to power Elizabeth Forward (12-3, 9-2) to a Section 2-4A win over Uniontown (2-14, 0-11). Charlie Nigut, AJ Grese and Jacob Williams each plated two runs for the Warriors.
Fox Chapel 4, West Allegheny 2 – Jeremy Haigh doubled, homered and pitched 6⅔ innings, allowing two unearned runs on six hits, to lead Fox Chapel (13-4, 6-3) to a Section 3-5A win. Kris Bandurski had two hits and an RBI and Tristan Blum got the final out to earn a save for the Foxes. Mason Gass singled and drove in a run for West Allegheny (7-10, 2-7).
Frazier 6, Beth-Center 1 – Chase Fulmer homered, doubled and knocked in three runs to back winning pitcher Brant Alekson for Frazier (8-8, 4-7) in a Section 1-2A contest against Beth-Center (5-11, 3-8). Jackson Nopwaskey and Lorenzo Brown each doubled for the Bulldogs.
Freedom 1, Shenango 0 – Mason O’Donnell drove in the game’s only run while Boden Hilliard gave up three hits in 5⅓ scoreless innings for the win and Xavier Robbins struck out two in 1⅔ innings for the save as Freedom (10-6, 7-3) blanked Shenango (12-5, 8-3) in Section 2-2A. Sam Patton had two hits while Joey Campoli struck out 10 in six innings for the Wildcats.
Indiana 2, Armstrong 1 – Winning pitcher Caden Force surrendered one unearned run on one hit and struck out six while Greg Minninck tossed three innings of relief and struck out seven to power Indiana (17-1) to a nonsection win. Nick Kinter doubled and knocked in the lone run for Armstrong (7-12). Ethan Shank doubled for the Indians, who scored twice in the first inning.
Mohawk 8, Ambridge 1 – Vinny Pezzuolo tripled twice, doubled and brought home four runs and Drew Wrona went 2 for 4 with an RBI as Mohawk (9-8) downed Ambridge (8-9) in nonsection play. Winning pitcher Briar Crawford struck out 10 for the Warriors.
Montour 11, Ellwood City 1 – Zander Stern went 2 for 2 with a pair of RBIs, Quinn Dalverny also knocked in two runs and Dalton Young plated a run as Montour (11-6) defeated Ellwood City (14-5) in a nonsection contest. Sam Landis doubled and drove in a run for the Wolverines. Cyprian Slifkey picked up a win for the Spartans.
Neshannock 11, New Brighton 1 – Adam Rickel homered and knocked in three runs while pitcher Jake Rynd got the win as Neshannock (12-4, 8-3) crushed New Brighton (9-7, 7-4) in Section 2-2A. Brock Budacki tripled for the Lions.
Pine-Richland 3, New Castle 0 – Logan Plummer and Thomas Kapanowksi each drove in a run while winning pitcher Keegan Deihl gave up one hit and struck out eight in 6⅔ shutout innings as Pine-Richland (16-2, 7-2) bested New Castle (4-14, 1-8) in Section 3-5A. Angelo DeSalvo had the only hit for the Red Hurricanes.
Quaker Valley 5, Obama Academy 1 – Kolton Johnson collected two hits and two RBIs and Braylon Johnson doubled while Oscar Roig picked up a win as Quaker Valley (11-6) defeated Obama Academy (8-3) in nonsection play.
Ringgold 4, Laurel Highlands 0 – Anthony Koziel, Jimmy Nash and Ashton Mincin combined on a four-hit shutout and Alex Kolano doubled and drove in a run to lead Ringgold (8-9, 6-5) past Laurel Highlands (3-12, 2-9) in Section 2-4A.
Rochester 3, Aquinas Academy 2 – Cole Poplin drove in a run as Rochester (7-7, 6-7) came back from a two-run deficit and scored three runs in the top of the seventh to beat Aquinas Academy (4-11, 4-9) in Section 2-A. Devin Woodley earned the win for the Rams.
Serra Catholic 15, Sewickley Academy 0 – Winning pitcher Jake Anderson struck out four on his way to a four-inning perfect game as Serra Catholic (14-3, 7-2) thumped Sewickley Academy (4-10. 3-5) in Section 3-A. Jake Holmes homered, doubled and drove in three while Tyler Skaggs went 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and six RBIs for the Eagles.
Shady Side Academy 2, Burrell 1 – Cooper Soren threw a complete game, giving up one run on two hits with six strikeouts, to lead Shady Side Academy (7-12) to a nonsection win. Michael Bogdanovich singled and doubled for the Bulldogs. Adam Wass drove in a run for Burrell (9-8).
South Side 14, Brentwood 0 – Jake Ziegler went 3 for 4 with a pair of home runs and two RBIs and Tyler Staab was 3 for 3 with an RBI as South Side (9-5, 7-3) blanked Brentwood (5-12, 3-8) in Section 3-2A. Andrew Corfield, Ryder Goe and Carter Wilson each collected two hits for the Rams.
Thomas Jefferson 4, Norwin 2 – Luke Kosko had three hits, including a double, and winning pitcher Damian Bosco had two hits and an RBI to lead Thomas Jefferson (13-4) to a nonsection win. Nate Silberman singled, doubled and drove in a run for Norwin (12-8).
Western Beaver 12, St. Joseph 2; Western Beaver 13, St. Joseph 1 – Western Beaver (13-4, 12-2) swept a Section 2-A doubleheader from St. Joseph (2-13, 2-12). In the first game, August Licthner, Christian Stefankis and Logan Beercook each had a double and two RBIs for the Golden Beavers. Elliott Szalla and Luke Hill drove in runs for the Spartans. In the second game, Stefankis doubled and tripled, Benji Valdez had three hits and three RBIs and Vinny Ross had two hits and two RBIs for Western Beaver. Gabe Maltese had two hits and drove in a run for St. Joseph.
Boys volleyball
Derry 3, Bishop Guilfoyle 0 – Duke Klapchar had nine kills, 10 digs and and three aces and Caden Marsh also recorded nine kills to lead Derry to a nonsection win.
Boys lacrosse
Hempfield 13, West Allegheny 0 – Maddyn Bompiani and Mats Mertz each scored four goals, while Austin Taylor scored a pair of goals to lead Hempfield (4-9) to a nonsection win against West Allegheny (2-9). Austin Yurek and Colby Herron each tacked on a goal for the Spartans. Joey Domonkos and Parker Cernuska combined on the second shutout in Hempfield’s program history.
Girls lacrosse
Hampton 8, Butler 7 – Lizzy Saponsky scored four goals to lead Hampton to a nonsection win.
Hempfield 19, West Allegheny 1 – Charlotte Auckerman and Abigail Wynert had hat trick and Gianna Novotney and Gabrielle Hayden added two goals apiece to lead Hempfield to a nonsection victory.
Latrobe 14, Yough 13 – Nina Scalise scored five goals, Allyson Merchant and Aliza Yeager added three goals each and Erin Ulewicz made five saves to lead Latrobe to a nonsection win.
Pine-Richland 16, South Fayette 4 – Mallory Boivin scored five goals and had two assists, Mada Mill scored a hat trick and had a pair of assists and Cate Gentille recorded a hat trick as Pine-Richland (15-2) cruised to a nonsection win over South Fayette (11-6). Claire Mills had two goals and Kendyll Jerry added two assists for the Rams.
Quaker Valley 10, Sewickley Academy 1 – Lucy Roig had three goals and an assist, Kate Miller added two goals and two assists and Alexa Westwood collected a goal and four assists for Quaker Valley in a Section 2-2A win. Mia Floro scored twice, Meredith Fallgren had a goal and two assists and Emily Reiner made four saves for the Quakers.
