High school roundup for May 7, 2025: Pine-Richland snags share of section title

Jon Edgerly and Logan Plummer each singled and doubled as Pine-Richland pounded out 12 hits in a 12-2 Section 3-5A baseball victory over New Castle on Wednesday.

The result, coupled with Mars’ walk-off upset win over Shaler, gave the Rams a share of the section title with the Titans.

Sam Heckert drove in three runs, Luke Grana doubled and plated a pair of runs and Anthony Annichine went 2 for 3 with two RBIs for Pine-Richland (17-2, 8-2). Alex Rodgers had a hit and an RBI for the Red Hurricanes (4-15, 1-9).

Mars 6, Shaler 5 – Grady Speigle singled and came around to score on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Mars (8-10, 4-6) a walk-off Section 3-5A win. Hayden Reisinger doubled and drove in three runs and winning pitcher Braden Schmitt threw 1⅔ scoreless innings for the Fightin’ Planets. Troy Leas homered for Shaler (13-5, 8-2).

Beth-Center 11, Frazier 8 – Ashten Pinkney went 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored to lead Beth-Center (6-11, 4-8) to a Section 1-2A win. Sylan Keilbach doubled and drove in a pair for Frazier (8-9, 4-8).

Bishop Canevin 11, Steel Valley 1 – In nonsection play, Jackson Maddix went 4 for 4 with a double, triple and two RBIs as Bishop Canevin (10-6) downed Steel Valley (5-12) in six innings. Kole Olszewski picked up the win, striking out eight over four innings.

Blackhawk 10, Hopewell 4 – Dylan Smith went 3 for 3 with a home run and four RBIs to lead Blackhawk (9-5, 8-4) to the Section 1-4A win against Hopewell (5-14, 4-8). Luca Dilonardo added two hits and an RBI for Blackhawk.

Burrell 8, Eden Christian 5 – Nolan Brouwer drove in two runs as Burrell (11-8) beat Eden Christian (13-4) in a nonsection game. Brady Hull doubled twice and drove home three runs in the loss.

California 5, Chartiers-Houston 1 – In Section 1-2A, California’s Caden Monticelli gave up five hits and struck out five in his complete game win over Chartiers-Houston (7-8, 4-7). Parker Gillen drove in two runs for California (7-9, 6-5) while teammate Kaden Weston went 2 for 4. Josiah Mouschlian went 2 for 4 and drove in Chartiers-Houston’s only run.

Canon-McMillan 7, Baldwin 1 – Cayden Laskosky hit a double and home run and drove in two runs as Canon-McMillan (14-5) defeated Baldwin (9-7) in a nonsection game. M.J. Maruschak notched the complete-game win, striking out five while giving up four hits. Aiden Robinson went 2 for 2 for Baldwin.

Carmichaels 6, West Greene 1 – Jase Zdravecky threw a complete game with nine strikeouts and Brayden Andrews, Ryder Kreig and Cooper Richards each had a hit and an RBI for Carmichaels (12-4, 9-3) in a Section 1-A win. Jackson Grimes had three hits for West Greene (3-14, 2-10).

Central Catholic 6, Montour 2 – CJ Proch singled, doubled and drove in two runs and Yaniel Heredia doubled and knocked in three to lead Central Catholic (7-12) to a nonsection win over Montour (11-7).

Elizabeth Forward 10, Uniontown 0 – Winning pitcher Jacob Peterson struck out eight in five innings and helped his own cause with a double and two RBIs as Elizabeth Forward (13-3, 10-2) won in Section 2-4A. Mitchell Vuick singled, homered and drove in two runs and Charlie Nigut doubled twice for EF. Shane Kelly had two hits for Uniontown (2-15, 0-12).

Forest Hills 9, Derry 0 – Xander Richardson went 4 for 4 with three RBIs and Chase Williamson threw six scoreless innings for Forest Hills (9-3) in a nonsection win over Derry (5-9).

Freeport 12, Southmoreland 0; Freeport 10, Southmoreland 0 – Freeport (12-6, 8-4) pitched two shutouts in a doubleheader sweep of Southmoreland (1-16, 0-12) in Section 3-3A. In the first game, Gage Blystone struck out eight in five innings and Kason Barker went 3 for 4 with three RBIs for the Yellowjackets. In the second game, Owen Westendorf struck out six in six innings and Michael Hanz went 4 for 4 with two doubles and two RBIs for Freeport. Grey Moyer had two hits for Southmoreland.

Greensburg Central Catholic 16, Mapletown 0 – Nick O’Mahoney and Michael Kiss combined on a three-inning shutout and Stephen Kochis went 2 for 2 with a double to help Greensburg Central Catholic (14-2, 11-1) past Mapletown (2-14, 0-12) in Section 1-A. Sean Walker tripled and Ian Shipley and Bobby Smithnosky doubled for the Centurions.

Hampton 6, Central Valley 5 – Nate Constantakis hit a walk-off double as Hampton (5-13, 4-8) picked up the Section 1-4A win against Central Valley (10-9, 7-5). Hampton trailed by three heading into the bottom of the seventh. Nathan Angelo went 2 for 3 with an RBI for Central Valley.

Indiana 8, Butler 1 – Ethan Shank and Caden Force had a double and two RBIs each as Indiana (18-1) beat Butler (10-8) in a nonsection game. Five Indiana pitchers combined for the three-hitter.

Jefferson-Morgan 8, Jeannette 1 – John Woodward and Brenton Barnhart had two hits and two RBIs each as Jefferson-Morgan (13-3, 9-3) beat Jeannette (8-10, 5-7) in Section 1-A play. Jayden Kennedy had two hits for Jeannette.

Kiski Area 11, Penn Hills 1; Kiski Area 11, Penn Hills 1 – Kiski Area (4-13, 3-9) swept Penn Hills (0-16, 0-12) in a Section 1-5A doubleheader. In the first game, John DeLuca had two singles, a triple and three RBIs and Andrew Varner doubled and drove in a pair for the Cavaliers. Gavin Tierney singled and doubled for Penn Hills. In the second game, Zach Held singled, doubled and drove in two runs and winning pitcher Johnny Walker struck out for six in five innings for Kiski Area. Anthony Sipple tripled for Penn Hills.

Laurel 16, Northgate 0; Laurel 11, Northgate 1 – Laurel (8-10, 7-5) swept Northgate (4-14, 2-10) in a Section 2-2A doubleheader. In Game 1, Kolton Carlson went 3 for 3 with a double and five RBIs while winning pitcher Luca Santini gave up one hit and struck out eight in four shutout innings for the Spartans. Nick Rawlings had the only hit for the Flames. In Game 2, Carlson smacked a triple and once again drove in five runs while starter RJ Kissick went five innings, allowed one run on three hits and fanned seven to pick up the win for the Spartans. Billy Hurley knocked in the lone run for the Flames.

Leechburg 18, Summit Academy 0; Leechburg 18, Summit Academy 3 – Leechburg (15-2, 14-0) swept Summit Academy (0-15, 0-14) in Section 2-A. Leechburg scored 18 runs over three innings in Game 1. Mason Bertino went 4 for 4 with four RBIs while Jake Cummings went 3 for 3 and drove in three runs. In Game 2, Dylan Whitlinger went 3 for 4 and drove home five runs while Cummings again went 3 for 3 with two RBIs.

Ligonier Valley 4, Mt. Pleasant 2 – Noah Knupp had two hits and two RBIs and winning pitcher Austin Harr struck out eight for Ligonier Valley (9-7, 7-4) in a Section 3-3A win. Jake Petalino, Tyler Smith and Owen Smith had two hits each for the Rams. Sonny Marne had two hits for Mt. Pleasant (12-5, 8-3).

North Catholic 3, Beaver 0 – Winning pitcher Caden Williams gave up five hits and fanned eight in a complete-game shutout to lead North Catholic (8-7, 5-7) to a Section 1-4A win. Landon Eifler doubled and drove in a pair of runs and Owen Beatrice doubled and brought home a run for the Trojans. Maddox Tanner doubled for Beaver (11-7, 8-4).

OLSH 4, Riverview 3 – Gino Williams doubled and drove in a run and Iseia Schulz had two hits and an RBI to send OLSH (13-6, 11-1) to a Section 3-2A win. Eli DeVita had two hits and Miles Duncan had two RBIs for Riverview (12-5, 9-3).

Penn-Trafford 5, Franklin Regional 3 – Aiden Drotos delivered a single, double and three RBIs and Ethan Septak had two hits and drove in a run for Penn-Trafford (14-5, 10-2) in Section 1-5A. Luke Williams singled, doubled and knocked in two runs for Franklin Regional (10-7, 6-6).

Peters Township 11, South Fayette 8 – Jackson Stocker smashed a two-run tie-breaking home run in the top of the eighth to lead Peters Township (13-6, 8-4) to a Section 2-5A win over South Fayette (9-9, 5-7). Stocker finished with three RBIs while winning pitcher Michael Alspaugh tripled, doubled twice and knocked in three runs and James Tygard plated a pair of runs for the Indians. Chaz Kosko and Cody Bungert each drove in a run for the Lions.

Quaker Valley 10, Sto-Rox 0 – Ryan Finamore went 3 for 3 with three RBIs as Quaker Valley (12-6, 6-4) shut out Sto-Rox (0-13, 0-9) in a five-inning Section 1-3A game. Henry Zupanc went 2 for 2 with a triple and an RBI.

Ringgold 6, Laurel Highlands 0 – Tyler Fisher struck out seven while giving up one hit over five scoreless innings as Ringgold (9-9, 7-5) picked up the Section 2-4A win over Laurel Highlands (3-13, 2-10). Sam Allen went 2 for 4 and drove in three runs in the win.

Rochester 3, Aquinas Academy 2 – In Section 2-A, Cameron Janectic drove home the winning run on a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the ninth as Rochester (8-7, 7-7) beat Aquinas Academy (4-12, 4-10). Jett Williams went 2 for 4 with a solo home run for Rochester while picking up the win in relief, striking out three in 1⅔ innings.

Shenango 5, Freedom 4 – Shenango (13-5, 9-3) edged out Freedom (10-7, 7-4) in Section 2-2A off a walk-off RBI single by Nate Deem in the eighth inning. Deem finished his day with a pair of RBIs while Joey Campoli doubled and knocked in a run and Trey Ross got the win for the Wildcats. Boden Hilliard doubled and plated a run for the Bulldogs.

Springdale 10, Carlynton 3; Springdale 11, Carlynton 6 – Springdale (4-10, 3-9) swept a pair of Section 3-2A games from Carlynton (2-14, 0-11). In the first game, Joey Loebig went 3 for 3 with a double and four RBIs and Noah Robbins added two hits and one RBI for Springdale. In the second game, Andrew Redman singled and tripled and Loebig had two hits and two RBIs for the Dynamos. Tyler Henrich doubled and drove in two runs for the Cougars.

Upper St. Clair 7, Chartiers Valley 2 – In the second game of a doubleheader, Josh Burlingame doubled and knocked in two runs and Noah Wilson struck out 10 in a complete game win for Upper St. Clair (11-6, 7-5). John Papariella brought home two runs Chartiers Valley (6-13, 3-9).

Charleroi 2, Waynesburg 1; Waynesburg 11, Charleroi 2 – Waynesburg (15-3, 11-1) split a Section 4-3A doubleheader with Charleroi (10-6, 8-4). In the first game, Brock Henderson hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning for the Cougars. Jacob Gelder pitched all eight innings for the win, giving up five hits while striking out 10. In Game 2, Alex VanSickle went 4 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs for Waynesburg. Tyler Groves and Jake Stephenson added two hits and two RBIs each for the Raiders.

Winchester Thurston 13, Union 4 – Sam McComb went 3 for 4 with a double, home run and three RBIs as Winchester Thurston (11-5, 10-4) beat Union (7-9, 7-7) in a Section 2-A game. Sam Hammons went 2 for 5 for Winchester Thurston, driving in three runs.

Softball

Avonworth 6, South Fayette 4 – Emma Obersteiner belted a walk-off, three-run homer to lift Avonworth (14-4) over South Fayette (12-6) in a nonsection game. Obersteiner had four RBIs. Maddie Cavenaugh homered and drove in two runs for South Fayette.

Bentworth 2, West Greene 1 – In nonsection play, Sofia Gaussa walked with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh to force home the winning run as Bentworth (8-9) defeated West Greene (13-3). Willow Eckels picked up the complete-game win, giving up four hits while striking out three. Marissa Tharp went 2 for 3 for West Greene.

Chartiers Valley 2, Hampton 1 – In the bottom of the eighth, Kaitlyn Truong laid down a bunt that scored Lily Duffill from third base and lifted Chartiers Valley (17-1) to a walk-off nonsection win over Hampton (14-4). Annabelle Helt drove in a run and winning pitcher Delaney O’Connor gave up one run on seven hits in eight innings. Jenna Backus drove in the lone Talbots run.

Chartiers-Houston 2, Union 1 – Meadow Ferri singled home the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as Chartiers-Houston (17-1) defeated Union (16-2) in nonsection play. Meadow Ferri pitched all nine innings for Chartiers-Houston, striking out 16 and giving up four hits.

Cornell 12, Bishop Canevin 5 – Kathleen Wegley had two hits and five RBIs and Samantha Melius doubled and drove in three runs to pace Cornell (7-7, 4-6) to a Section 1-A win. Emma Ambriz and winning pitcher McKenna Griffith each drove in a run for the Raiders. Ava Washington doubled and plated a run for Bishop Canevin (3-10, 2-8). Cornell also won the second game of the doubleheader, 14-13, to clinch a playoff spot.

Elizabeth Forward 15, Ringgold 3 – In five innings, Aubri Cimba, Hannah Evans, Julia Johnson and Sophie Pasinsky all homered as Elizabeth Forward (14-2, 11-1) downed Ringgold (0-18, 0-12) in Section 2-4A. Evans and Johnson had three RBIs each while Cimba and Pasinsky each drove home two runs.

Greensburg Salem 5, Freeport 0 – Alle Scarpa threw a three-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts, including the 400th of her career, and no walks as Greensburg Salem (11-5, 7-5) defeated Freeport (4-12, 1-10) in Section 1-4A. Hannah Olbeter doubled and drove in three runs for the Golden Lions. Grace Palko singled and doubled for the Yellowjackets.

Hickory 4, Ellwood City 2 – A.J. Jarzab struck out 18 as Hickory beat Ellwood City (10-8) in nonsection play. Olivia Schneider homered and had two RBIs for Hickory while Amber McQuiston hit a home run and drove in both Ellwood City runs.

Indiana 7, Derry 2 – Julia Antonacci singled, doubled and drove in three runs and Rylin Blystone had a single, double and two RBIs to help Indiana (9-10, 8-4) to a Section 1-4A win. Kali Henigin singled and doubled and Callie Krause drove in two runs for Derry (10-5, 8-4).

Latrobe 10, Kiski Area 0 – Mya McHugh threw a three-hit, six-inning shutout with 11 strikeouts and went 3 for 3 with two RBIs to send Latrobe (10-8, 7-5) past Kiski Area (5-12, 4-8) in Section 2-5A. Miley Williams had two hits and two RBIs for the Wildcats. Aubrey West singled and doubled for the Cavaliers.

Laurel Highlands 2, Albert Gallatin 0 – Winning pitcher Payton Senge struck out 12 as Payton Rambo doubled and Emelia Cavaliere tripled to lead Laurel Highlands (8-11) to a nonsection win. Jenna Myers, Aurora Clark and Kylee Augustine each had a hit for Albert Gallatin (4-13).

Leechburg 17, St. Joseph 0 – Madison Wetzel went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs, Danica Sopcak went 3 for 3 with a triple and two RBIs and Adalyn Zanotto went 2 for 2 with two doubles and three RBIs to lead Leechburg (8-8, 6-6) to a Section 3-A win. Trinity Kimble threw a three-inning, one-hit shutout. Emma Blackburn had the hit for St. Joseph (0-9, 0-7).

McKeesport 12, Gateway 5 – Jessica Miller went 5 for 5 with a home run and two RBIs and Winter Germany singled, tripled and drove home five runs as McKeesport (3-11, 2-10) beat Gateway (4-13, 0-12) in a Section 2-5A game. Ryenn Thomas and Maggie Badstibner each went 3 for 5 with an RBI.

Mohawk 4, Sharpsville 3 – Alivia Hare homered and drove in two runs as Mohawk (13-5) beat Sharpsville in nonsection play. Mohawk’s Addy Moskal and Gianna Pezzuolo each went 2 for 3 with an RBI.

Monessen 19, Leechburg 2 – Grace Klingenpeel went 3 for 4 with two grand slams and nine RBIs to lead Monessen (6-8, 6-6) to a Section 3-A win. Bailey Kopper, Amirra Brewer and Bry’Aunna Cook each drove in two runs for the Greyhounds. Adalyn Zanotto had a double and an RBI for Leechburg (7-8, 5-6).

Monessen 17, St. Joseph 2 – Joey Hurst singled, doubled and drove in four runs as Monessen (6-8, 6-6) clinched a playoff berth in Section 3-A with its second win of the day. Chloe Damico singled and knocked in two runs for St. Joseph (0-9, 0-7).

Montour 12, Mars 1 – Shania Cope doubled and drove in four runs, Caylee Moser and Danielle Terpack drove in two runs apiece and Gabby McDowell got the win as Montour (4-12) rolled to a nonsection victory. Sophia Soltis tripled and knocked in a run for Mars (3-17). Emmy Ellis had a double and an RBI for the Spartans.

Moon 8, Quaker Valley 1 – Winning pitcher Katie DeMarco gave up a run on five hits and fanned 13 in six innings while going 3 for 3 with an RBI and Macy Trost and Cami Chambers each plated two runs to lead Moon (8-8) to a nonsection win against Quaker Valley (4-11). Olivia Hoose knocked in the only run for the Quakers.

Mt. Pleasant 9, Uniontown 5 – Ella Alakson and Layla Gratzinger had two hits and three RBIs each as Mt. Pleasant (11-5) scored seven runs in the sixth inning to rally past Uniontown (10-8) in a nonsection game. Alexa Budner was 2 for 3 for Uniontown.

North Hills 16, Penn Hills 0 – Kassidy Hemmingway had two hits and four RBIs as North Hills (15-4, 10-2) downed Penn Hills (2-16, 0-12) in three innings in Section 1-5A. Addyson Wrigley went 3 for 3 with a double, home run and two RBIs.

Oakland Catholic 7, Ringgold 6 – Kennedy Waffensmith’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Oakland Catholic (3-11, 2-10) the Section 2-4A win against Ringgold (0-17, 0-11). Cheyenne Lamont went 3 for 3 with two doubles and two RBIs for Ringgold.

Seton LaSalle 13, Burgettstown 2 – Layla Chapman went 4 for 4 with four RBIs as Seton LaSalle (7-5, 6-3) picked up the five-inning Section 2-3A win. Meadow Kennard went 3 for 3 and drove home three runs for Seton LaSalle. Alice Kubatka went 2 for 3 and drove in both runs for Burgettstown (7-9, 4-6).

Seton LaSalle 8, OLSH 3 – Gianna Ferrieri went 3 for 3 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs and picked up the win on the mound, striking out four in 6⅓ innings, as Seton LaSalle (8-5, 7-3) picked up its second win of the day by beating OLSH (9-6. 7-3) in a Section 2-3A game. Layla Chapman 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs for Seton LaSalle, finishing the day 6 for 8 with six RBIs. Leann Walzer and Mya Eshenbaugh each hit solo home runs for OLSH.

Shady Side Academy 17, Ellis School 7 – In a six-inning nonsection game, Elianna Chachula went 3 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs as Shady Side Academy (4-8) defeated Ellis School (0-12). Becca Schriver went 3 for 4 with an RBI for Shady Side Academy while teammate Monique-Claire Fosung drove in three runs. Elyse Brennan had two hits and an RBI for Ellis School.

Shaler 5, Knoch 0 – Taylor London threw a complete-game two-hitter with seven strikeouts to lead Shaler (14-4) to a nonsection win. Jayla Antomachi singled, doubled and homered and Addy Aleski doubled and plated a pair for the Titans. Emersyn Jones and Alena Tekely had hits for Knoch (17-3).

South Park 6, Baldwin 4 – Emma Hays went 2 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs as South Park (18-0) beat Baldwin (13-5) in a nonsection game. Sydney Sekely pitched all eight innings for South Park, striking out 15. Gabby Jaquay went 2 for 4 and drove in a run for Baldwin.

Thomas Jefferson 13, Albert Gallatin 2 – Morgan Alisesky doubled, homered and drove in five runs to lead Thomas Jefferson (12-6, 10-2) to the five-inning Section 4-5A win over Albert Gallatin (3-14, 1-11). Adalina Bracco added a double and three RBIs.

Upper St. Clair 7, Mt. Lebanon 1 – Winning pitcher Brooklyn Kemp surrendered one run on four hits and struck out six while going 2 for 4 at the dish with a triple and two RBI to power Upper St. Clair (9-8) to a nonsection win. Olivia Park had an RBI for Mt. Lebanon (6-14). Nora Stutzman collected three hits for the Panthers.

Washington 11, California 10 – Zkyiah Hines went 3 for 5 with a triple and three RBIs and Mayaja Lee went 3 for 4 with a double and two RBIs to lead Washington (5-8, 1-8) to a Section 4-2A victory. Avery Filby doubled, homered and drove in three runs for California (2-12, 0-9).

Western Beaver 6, North Catholic 2 – Elizabeth Squicquero drove in a pair of runs, Carleigh Smith doubled and knocked in a run, and Izzie Lefebvre picked up a win as Western Beaver (6-11, 5-7) defeated North Catholic (8-8, 5-7) in Section 3-4A. Clare Kotwica doubled and plated a run for the Trojans.

Yough 4, South Allegheny 0 – Jaidyn Vay threw a five-hit shutout with five strikeouts to send Yough (7-9) to a nonsection win. Kiersten Odelli had two hits and an RBI and Brooke Kowalski had a hit and two RBIs for the Cougars. Cameran Colecchi had two hits for South Allegheny (14-3).

Boys lacrosse

Hempfield 16, Plum 1 – Evan Saltzgiver scored six goals and Tyler Gradich and Frank Somers added two goals apiece to lead Hempfield to a Section 1-3A win.

Girls lacrosse

Hempfield 21, Greensburg Salem 3 – Samantha Reilly collected six goals and two assists, Angelina Reese had five goals and four assists and Charlotte Auckerman added four goals and an assist to lead Hempfield to a nonsection win.

Quaker Valley 14, North Allegheny 3 – Lucy Roig scored seven goals, Alexa Westwood collected three goals and three assists and Emily Reiner made 10 saves to lead Quaker Valley to a nonsection win.
