High school roundup for Nov. 2, 2024: Jaivin Peel powers Western Beaver in playoff win

Jaivin Peel threw for five touchdowns and ran for another to lead No. 5 Western Beaver to a 41-6 victory over No. 12 Carlynton in a WPIAL Class 2A first-round playoff game Saturday.

Chris Kirkland caught three of Peel’s touchdown passes, including a 12-yarder to start the scoring, a 55-yarder to make it 21-0 and a 93-yarder to make it 35-0 at halftime.

Wyatt Sparbanie and Jadon Bishop also had touchdown catches for the Golden Beavers (8-2), who will face No. 4 Steel Valley at 7 p.m. Friday at Moon in the quarterfinals. Devonte Dean scored on a 5-yard run for the Cougars (6-5).

University Prep 38, Punxsutawney 26 – Xair Stevenson gave University Prep the lead for good with an 80-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, beating Punxsutawney (5-6) in a Class 4A District 8-9 subregional. USO (4-5) will meet Clearfield in the subregional finals next Friday.

Stevenson also scored on a 42-yard run for University Prep. Zion Hauser had a 24-yard touchdown catch from Daimere Adair, an 80-yard TD catch from Amir Pollard on a double pass and a game-sealing interception return for a touchdown.

Maddox Hetrick had a touchdown run, a touchdown pass and an interception return for a touchdown for Punxsutawney.

Girls volleyball

Hampton 3, Freeport 0 – At Peters Township, Hampton (14-6) defeated Freeport (12-5) to claim third place in Class 3A and the WPIAL’s final spot in the PIAA field. Set scores were 26-24, 25-20, 25-23.
