High school roundup for Nov. 4, 2025: WPIAL champ Fox Chapel opens state playoff run with win

David Zakrocki and Rocco Poli scored as WPIAL champion Fox Chapel began its PIAA playoff run with a 2-1 victory over District 3 fourth-place finisher Central York (15-6-1) in the Class 4A boys soccer first round Tuesday night.

The Foxes (17-2) will meet District 1 runner-up Abington in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Allderdice 1, General McLane 0 – Santiago Carillo scored the winning goal, assisted by Luca Fuerte, as Allderdice (15-5) defeated District 10 champion General McLane (15-4-1) in the Class 3A first round. The Dragons will face WPIAL champion West Allegheny in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Beaver 9, Somerset 1 – Anthony Furda had two goals and an assist and Sam Good also scored twice to power Beaver (17-5) past Somerset (17-4) in the Class 2A first round. Shane Ebbitt had a goal and two assists, Ryan Perez added a goal and an assist and Seth Kullen, Hudson Vann and Zach Orend also scored for the Bobcats, who will take on District 10 champ Fairview in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Bentworth 3, Mercyhurst Prep 1 – Ryan Moessner scored the go-ahead goal in the second half and Adam Moessner and Blake Lusk also scored for WPIAL champion Bentworth (22-0) in a Class A first-round win over Mercyhurst Prep (14-7). The Bearcats will meet District 9 champion Brockway in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Conrad Weiser 4, Thomas Jefferson 1 – Parker Centeno had a pair of goals and Cash Stout and Owen Hunt also scored to lead District 3 champ Conrad Weiser (22-0-1) to a Class 3A first-round win. Gavin Kern scored for Thomas Jefferson (19-4-1). Conrad Weiser will meet Franklin Regional in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Fairview 7, Quaker Valley 0 – District 10 champ Fairview (21-0) blanked Quaker Valley (18-4-1) in the Class 2A first round and will meet Beaver in the quarterfinals Saturday.

OLSH 8, Bishop Caroll 0 – Aaron Callahan and Owen Minzer scored two goals apiece and Brady Hernandez, Issac Tarbuk, Wyatt Walsh and Collin Hernandez also scored to lead OLSH (18-1) to a Class A first-round win over Bishop Carroll (9-12). The Chargers will face Lancaster Mennonite in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Seneca Valley 2, McDowell 1 (OT) – Jacob Prex scored the overtime winner and Michael Pokrzywinski also scored to lead Seneca Valley (18-3) past District 10 champion McDowell (14-7) in the Class 4A first round. The Raiders will meet District 3 champ Warwick in the quarterfinals Saturday.

West Allegheny 2, York Suburban 1 – Anthony Mimna and Jenson Wolfe scored a goal apiece to lead WPIAL champion West Allegheny (15-6) past York Suburban (13-7-2) in the Class 3A first round. West A will meet Allderdice in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Winchester Thurston 6, Brockway 0 – The Bears (15-5-1) dispatched District 9 champion Brockway in the Class A first round and will meet WPIAL champ Bentworth in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Girls soccer

Bedford 2, Quaker Valley 0 – District 5 champion Bedford (19-1) shut out Quaker Valley (15-4-1) in the Class 2A first round and will take on WPIAL runner-up Burrell in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Burrell 2, Cathedral Prep 1 – McKenna Miller scored in the first half and Makiah Buchak added a goal in the second half to lead Burrell (13-7-2) past District 10 champion Cathedral Prep (18-3-1) in the Class 2A first round. Eva Wilson assisted on both goals and Leah Waldsmith made five saves for the Bucs, who will meet District 5 champion Bedford in the quarterfinals Saturday.

DuBois 4, Moon 2 – District 9 champion DuBois defeated Moon (19-3) in the Class 3A first round and will face WPIAL champ Fox Chapel in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Fox Chapel 2, Harbor Creek 0 – Emily McKee scored both goals to lead WPIAL champion Fox Chapel (20-1-1) past Harbor Creek (16-7) in a Class 3A first round win. Gemma Levy had an assist for the Foxes, who will meet DuBois in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

McConnellsburg 2, Bentworth 0 – Marin DeShong and Gemma Gordon scored to help McConnellsburg (20-2) oust WPIAL champion Bentworth (20-2-1) in the Class A first round.

North Allegheny 5, Penn Manor 0 – Kieran Shannon scored a pair of goals and Jordan Beemer and Kayla Schwerin combined on the shutout as North Allegheny (18-3-2) cruised past Penn Manor (13-5-2) in the Class 4A first round. Emma Schupansky, Avery Ruffus and Averie Bierker also scored for the Tigers, who will take on Downingtown West in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Seneca Valley 2, McDowell 1 – Cassie Leonard scored the go-ahead goal midway through the second half and Maddie Marcotte also scored to lead Seneca Valley (13-4-2) past District 10 champ McDowell (15-7) in the Class 4A first round. The Raiders will take on CB East in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Sewickley Academy 2, Karns City 1 – WPIAL runner-up Sewickley Academy (19-3) got past District 9 champ Karns City in the Class A first round and will meet Springdale in the quarterfinals Saturday.

South Fayette 5, Hollidaysburg 0 – Silvi Rossi and Lily Chiapetta scored two goals apiece and Mia Deramo added one to lead South Fayette (19-2-1) past Hollidaysburg (13-6-1) in the Class 3A first round. The Lions will face Cocalico in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Springdale 2, Windber 1 (OT) – Adele Walters-Vrabel scored the game-winning goal in the first minute of overtime to send Springdale to a Class A first-round win. Ainsley Wade had a goal and an assist and Tessa Derringer also dished out an assist for the Dynamos (14-2-1), who will face WPIAL runner-up Sewickley Academy in the quarterfinals Saturday. Kaylie Gay scored to give Windber (17-5) a 1-0 lead in the first half.

Girls volleyball

Beaver 3, DuBois 0 – Kailyn Connelly led with 14 kills and three aces, Jaedyn Brown followed with 10 kills and Kayden Blinn added 31 assists, three kills and nine aces for Beaver (22-1) in a Class 3A first-round win over DuBois (19-3). Aubrey Bumblis also had 16 digs and five assists for the Bobcats, who will meet Mars in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Frazier 3 Elk County 1 – Maddy Salisbury had 22 kills and six blocks, Addison Schultz added 11 kills and six blocks and Allie Monack also had 11 kills for Frazier (15-4) in a Class A first-round win over Elk County Catholic (14-4). Morgan Fisher dished out 33 assists, Grace Polkabla and Addison Hiles each had 13 digs and Mia West chipped in six kills and five blocks for the Commodores, who will meet Maplewood in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Mars 3, Warren 0 – Rylee Wooldridge led with 15 kills and 12 digs, Cecilia Christy followed with nine kills and Gabi Weidemann added 34 assists and 10 digs for Mars (18-5) in a Class 3A first round win over Warren (18-1). The Planets will face Beaver in the quarterfinals on Saturday.

In other PIAA volleyball action Tuesday, the WPIAL’s two entries in the Class 4A field, Pine-Richland and Peters Township, moved on. The Rams (15-6) swept State College (14-2), 3-0, and Peters (17-3) defeated Manheim Township (18-4), 3-1.

In Class 3A, WPIAL runner-up Oakland Catholic (21-2) swept Hollidaysburg (19-3), 3-0.

In Class 2A, Cinderella WPIAL champ Avonworth (17-6) swept Cathedral Prep (15-7), 3-0, but Hopewell (18-3) lost 3-1 to Bald Eagle Area (21-3) and Waynesburg (21-2) fell 3-0 to Corry (19-0).

In Class A, WPIAL champ Eden Christian (17-4) beat Clarion (12-7), 3-1, and Serra Catholic (14-7) fell 3-0 to Maplewood (20-2).

Field hockey

Hershey 2, Fox Chapel 0 – Taryn Valoczki and Kylie Hummer scored to lead Hershey (13-8-1) past WPIAL champion Fox Chapel (13-4-3) in the Class 2A first round.

In other PIAA first-round matches, Class 3A WPIAL champ Pine-Richland (17-4) lost 5-0 to Lower Dauphin (17-4-1) and Class A champ Shady Side Academy (17-3-1) lost 2-0 to Camp Hill (19-4).

Hockey

Bethel Park 5, Bishop McCort 2 – Kai Decker scored a hat trick, Peter Velisaris added a goal and two assists and Dylan Hartman had a goal and an assist to lead Bethel Park (3-2-1) to a Class 2A win. Zakhar Bryndin had a goal and an assist for Bishop McCort (4-2).

Latrobe 7, Wheeling Park 6 (SO) – Josh Matthews had a hat trick and added an assist and Landon Mainey finished with a goal and three assists to lead Latrobe (3-2-1) to a shootout win in Class 2A. Jaxson Kettering had a goal and two assists and Preston Miller also scored for Latrobe. Luke Simonetti had two goals and two assists for Wheeling Park (0-2-2).

Norwin 4, Cathedral Prep 3 – Parker Toth scored two goals and Brody Boban and Josh Toth added a goal apiece to lead Norwin (1-4-1) to a Class 2A win. Vinny Scalise scored two goals for Cathedral Prep (1-2-1).
