High school roundup for Nov. 5, 2024: WPIAL champion Moon boys pull out 1st-round win

Aedan Costa and Billy Sprott scored to lead WPIAL champion Moon (23-0) to a 2-1 victory over Lampeter-Strasburg (16-3-3) in PIAA Class 3A first-round boys soccer Tuesday. The Tigers will meet Allderdice in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Allderdice 1, General McLane 0 – Ethan Voight-Cherna scored for Allderdice (14-4-1) in a Class 3A first-round win over General McLane (16-4). Hari Arunachalam preserved the shutout for the Dragons, who will face Moon in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Avonworth 6, Bedford 1 – Cody Cwynar had two goals and an assist and Rowan Carmichael also scored twice to lead Avonworth (18-3-2) past Bedford (14-4-3) in the Class 2A first round. Calder Mahan also scored, Alex Hayes added a goal and Nathan Kline had two assists for the ‘Lopes, who will meet Fairview in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Bentworth 1, Westmont Hilltop 0 – Adam Moessner scored the winning goal in the first half, assisted by Aiden McMurray, to lead WPIAL champion Bentworth (20-0) past District 6 champ Westmont Hilltop (12-9) in the Class A first round. Bentworth will meet District 10 champion Mercyhurst Prep in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Cathedral Prep 3, South Park 1 – District 10 runner-up Cathedral Prep (16-6) defeated WPIAL champion South Park (20-1-2) in the Class 2A first round.

Conrad Weiser 4, Mars 0 – Gavin Rapp scored a hat trick to lead Conrad Weiser (22-1) past Mars (16-3-4) in the Class 3A first round.

Fairview 6, Deer Lakes 0 – Jackson Chiocco scored a hat trick to lead District 10 champion Fairview (20-2) past Deer Lakes (18-4-1) in the Class 2A first round.

Mercyhurst Prep 2, Eden Christian 1 – Adam Dahl scored twice in a two-minute span, with one of the goals on a penalty kick, as Mercyhurst Prep (16-6) defeated Eden Christian (11-8-2) in the Class A first round.

OLSH 1, Brockway 0 – Luke Wrabley scored to lead OLSH (16-3) past Brockway (12-7-1) in a Class A first-round win. The Chargers will meet McConnellsburg in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Plum 1, McDowell 0 (SO) – Chase Eber made a diving save in the seventh round of the shootout to lift WPIAL runner-up Plum (18-1-3) past McDowell (16-5) on penalty kicks. Gage Adinolfi, Bryce Bobich, Andy Strasser, Christian Alter and Noah Smith converted their attempts in the shootout, which Plum won 5-4. The Mustangs will face District 3 champ Cumberland Valley in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Girls soccer

Cathedral Prep 1, Burrell 0 – Jordyn DiRaimo scored and Jordan Senz recorded the shutout to lead District 10 champ Cathedral Prep (18-2-1) past Burrell (14-7-1) in the Class 2A first round.

Central Dauphin 3, Peters Township 2 (SO) – Julia Spergel scored a pair of goals as Peters Township (19-1-1) rallied from a two-goal deficit but lost 5-3 in a penalty kick shootout in the Class 4A first round. Kayden Williams scored twice for Central Dauphin (16-3-1).

Fox Chapel 5, Hollidaysburg 1 – Emily McKee, Paige Soloman, Taylor Wilkinson, Maddie Grimsley and Alyssa Quackenbush scored to lead Fox Chapel (19-4) past Hollidaysburg (15-5-1) in a Class 3A first-round win. The Foxes will face Lower Dauphin in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Karns City 2, Winchester Thurston 1 (OT) – District 9 champion Karns City (17-4) defeated Winchester Thurston (15-7) in the Class A first round. Meredith Snyder scored for the Bears.

Mars 5, Harbor Creek 0 – The Fightin’ Planets (19-3) rolled past District 10 champion Harbor Creek (12-8) in the Class 3A first round. Mars will meet WPIAL champ South Fayette in the quarterfinals Saturday.

North Catholic 2, Bedford 1 (OT) – Julia Siket’s second goal of the game was the overtime winner with five seconds left to lead North Catholic (17-4) past District 5 champ Bedford (18-1-1) in the Class 2A first round. North Catholic will meet District 10 champ Cathedral Prep in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Quaker Valley 2, Fort LeBoeuf 0 – Maddie Gatehouse and Annabel Miko scored to lead Quaker Valley (18-2-2) past Fort LeBoeuf (14-6) in a Class 2A first-round win. The Quakers will face Trinity Camp Hill in the quarterfinals Saturday.

Seneca Valley 6, Altoona 1 – Ashlee Libby scored three goals in the first 20 minutes to lead Seneca Valley (15-3-2) past Altoona (15-6) in a Class 4A first-round win. Maddie Marcotte, Bella Gianfranceso and Cassie Leonard also scored for the Raiders, who will face Conestoga in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Seton LaSalle 2, McConnellsburg 1 (OT) – Sydney Morgan scored the overtime winner to lead Seton LaSalle (16-3-2) past McConnellsburg (19-3-1) in the Class A first round. Angelina McGrath also scored for the Rebels, who will face Karns City in the quarterfinals Saturday.

South Fayette 5, DuBois 0 – Gabriella Bienecke led South Fayette (20-3) with three goals in a Class 3A first-round win over DuBois (17-4). Mia Patel and Emma Ferrari also scored for the Lions, who will meet Mars in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

Field hockey

Mechanicsburg 2, Pine-Richland 0 – Libby Olivetti and Mary Olivetti scored to lead Mechanicsburg (17-5-1) past WPIAL champion Pine-Richland (20-1) in the Class 3A first round.

In other first-round matchups, WPIAL Class 2A champ Peters Township lost 5-0 to Hershey and Class A champ Shady Side Academy lost 5-0 to Trinity Camp Hill.

Girls volleyball

Frazier 3, Saegertown 2 – Addison Schultz had 16 kills and eight blocks and Maddie Salisbury had 12 kills and 13 service points to lead Frazier (16-4) to a Class A first-round win over Saegertown (12-5). Gracen Hartman handed out 47 assists, Addison Hiles added 32 digs and Grace Vaughn recorded 10 kills for the Commodores, who will meet District 9 champ Clarion in the quarterfinals Saturday. Clarion defeated Eden Christian Academy, 3-1, Tuesday.

In Class 2A, Southmoreland defeated North Star, 3-2, Quaker Valley lost 3-2 to Cathedral Prep, Hopewell lost 3-0 to Richland and Neshannock lost 3-0 to Corry.

Mars 3, Central Mountain 0 – Cecilia Christy, Rylee Wooldridge, Ella Nicotra, Lily Javor and Hailey Duker combined for 37 kills and Gabi Weidemann dished out 32 assists to lead WPIAL champion Mars (19-4) to a Class 3A first-round win. The Fightin’ Planets will meet Hampton in Saturday’s quarterfinals.

The Talbots defeated Meadville, 3-2, and elsewhere in Class 3A, Beaver beat DuBois, 3-1.

In Class 4A, North Allegheny swept Manheim Township, 3-0, and North Catholic lost 3-2 to State College.

Hockey

Chartiers Valley 4, Blackhawk 0 – Noah Callendar scored twice, Gavin Waldron and Ryan Kumpf each added a goal and Tyler Held doled out three assists to lead Chartiers Valley (6-0) past Blackhawk (3-1) in Class A. Matt Colberg made 12 saves to earn the shutout.

McDowell 3, Plum 2 – Dylan Payne, Wendell Natividad and Harrison Parra scored to lead McDowell (3-4) to a Class A win. Joey Massarelli scored twice for Plum (1-5).

Seneca Valley 7, Franklin Regional 3 – Braden Moran scored twice and Andrew Malichky had a goal and two assists to lead Seneca Valley (5-0) to a Class 3A win. Max Williams had a goal and an assist for Franklin Regional (3-3).
