High school roundup for Oct. 10, 2018: Butler boys upset No. 1 Seneca Valley

Tate Mohney tallied two goals to lift Butler to a 2-1 victory over top-ranked Seneca Valley in a Section 1-4A boys soccer game Thursday.
Butler (9-4-1, 8-4-1) avenged a 1-0 loss to the Raiders from Sept. 20.
Seneca Valley (13-2-1, 11-2-1) suffered its second section loss of the season but still holds the top spot in the Section 1 standings.
Ringgold 1, Laurel Highlands 0 (OT) — Mason Fabean scored with 2:14 left in the first overtime as Ringgold (11-6, 10-2) won the Section 3-3A title.
Thomas Jefferson 3, West Mifflin 1 — AJ Meshanko scored his 16 th goal of the season and Preston Lutz netted his 13 th as Thomas Jefferson (11-4-1, 8-3-1) won in Section 4-3A.
Charleroi 14, Washington 3 — Cullen Woytovich had three goals, and Nick Laskey and Phill Banks each had two as Charleroi (14-0, 11-0) won in Section 3-2A.
Serra Catholic 7, Geibel 1 — Chris Salemi had two goals as Serra Catholic (9-4, 6-4) won a Section 2-A game.
Bishop Canevin 1, Chartiers-Houston 0 — Jack Staley scored to lead Bishop Canevin (7-4-2, 5-2-2) to a Section 4-A win.
Latrobe 3, Hempfield 1 — Marshall Kalning scored twice as Latrobe won a Section 3-4A game.
Nolan Agostoni added a goal for the Wildcats (9-6-1, 9-5-1), who are 3-0-1 over the past week and clinched a WPIAL playoff berth. That unbeaten run followed four straight losses.
Belle Vernon 6, Albert Gallatin 1 — Markello Apodiakos scored four goals to guide Belle Vernon (10-5-1, 7-3-1) to a 3-3A victory. Apodiakos became the program’s all-time leader in points with 202. He passed Mike Posey (1989), who had 200.
Mt. Pleasant 5, Derry 0 — Sam Napper scored twice, and Brandon Van Dyke, Lucas Tohey and Caleb Pfeifer also had goals as Mt. Pleasant (10-4, 8-3) captured a Section 2-2A victory.
Shane Piper made four saves to secure the shutout.
Southmoreland 8, Yough 0 — Noah Kinter had three goals and three assists to guide Southmoreland (8-7, 8-4) to a Section 3-2A victory. Brett Glowacki added two goals and three assists for the Scotties.
Franklin Regional 2, Montour 1 — Auston Kranick and Justin LeDonne scored to lead Class 3A No. 2 Franklin Regional (13-0-1) to a nonsection win.
Deer Lakes 7, Freeport 0 — Deer Lakes completed an unbeaten section record in dominant fashion.
Ryan Butler scored twice, leading a strong team offensive effort as Class AA No. 2 Deer Lakes earned a win over Freeport (8-9, 6-6) in a Section 2 game.
Nick Caro recorded one goal and one assist. A.J. Dorman, Ryan Rodgers, Tristian Hineman and Mike Rothrauff scored one goal each for Deer Lakes (14-0-1, 11-0-1).
Fox Chapel 0, Central Catholic 0 – Clayton Humbert made six saves as Fox Chapel (11-6-1, 8-5-1) clinched a WPIAL playoff berth with a Section 1-4A draw against Central Catholic (4-9-2, 3-8-2).
Plum 4, Penn Hills 0 — The Mustangs (10-6, 9-5) clinched a WPIAL playoff berth with a Section 3-4A victory over Penn Hills (2-14, 1-11).
Burrell 5, Valley 3 — Jake Guerrini had a hat trick and one assist to help Burrell (5-7-2, 5-6) top Valley (0-12, 0-10) in a Section 2-AA game. Layne Seskey had two goals and an assist for the Bucs. Kody Kirkwood scored twice for Valley and Michael Odrey had a goal.
Springdale 2, Riverview 0 — Michael Mitchell and Liam Dale scored for Springdale (10-2-1, 9-1-1) in a Section 3-A win over Riverview (4-9, 3-8). Ephraim Duku and Sammy Rzeszotarski had assists for the Dynamos. Mike Zolnierczyk made two saves to record his ninth shutout.
Kiski Area 1, Indiana 0 — Greg Paes’ goal in the 26th minute provided all the offense Kiski Area needed to defeat Indiana (7-9, 7-6) in Section 1-AAA play. Campbell Curry assisted on the goal. Nicholas Smith recorded two saves for Kiski Area (9-6-1, 8-5).
Highlands 1, Armstrong 0 — Gabe Norris scored for Highlands (6-10, 5-8) in a Section 1-AAA win over Armstrong (0-17, 0-14). Game Anthony made two saves in goal for the Golden Rams.
Girls soccer
Springdale 3, Shady Side Academy 1 — Jaden Domaratz scored two goals, including the go-ahead score with five minutes remaining, as the Dynamos (8-6, 6-4) rallied for a Section 1-A win over No. 2 Shady Side Academy (8-2, 7-2). Miranda Shock had the game-tying goal in the first half for Springdale, Sydni Henley had three assists and Rylie Patterson made eight saves.
Penn-Trafford 4, Hempfield 3 — Emma Rain scored twice, and Kiley Dugan and Jordan Lawrence each added goals as Penn-Trafford (12-3, 10-1) won a Section 3-4A game over Hempfield (4-7, 4-6). Dugan, Lawrence, Alexis Garia and Sarah Nguyen had assists. Megan Giesey made nine saves.
Freeport 6, Greensburg-Salem 1 — Carlie Giori and Sidney Shemanski each had two goals and two assists for Freeport (9-5-2) in a nonsection win over Greensburg Salem (6-9-1).
Bishop Canevin 3, Vincentian Academy 1 — Lauren Kirsch had two goals for Bishop Canevin (8-3-1, 7-3) in a Section 4-A win.
Girls tennis
Derry 4, Neshannock 1 — Derry earned a WPIAL Class AA first-round victory on Thursday and will play the winner of Greensburg Salem and North Catholic in Monday’s quarterfinals. Amber Sterrett and Leah Perry won singles matches for the Trojans.
Greensburg Central Catholic 5, Avella 0 — Anna Vitale, Erin Schulte and Claire Hacker all won singles matches in straight sets to lead Greensburg Central Catholic (12-1) to a WPIAL Class AA first-round victory.
Katie Szekely/Ellie Losey and Isabell Derubeis/Juliette Steffensen won doubles matches for the Centurions, who will play the winner of Beaver and Mt. Pleasant in Monday’s quarterfinals.
Sewickley Academy 5, Southmoreland 0 — Evelyn Safar, Simran Bedi and Christina Walton won singles matches to guide top-seeded Sewickley Academy to a WPIAL Class AA first-round win over Southmoreland.
Cross country
At the MAC championship at Brush Creek Park, Mars’ Zachary Leachman finished first in 17 minutes, 18 seconds. In the girls race, Moon’s Mia Cochran crossed the finish line first in 20:11. Moon won the girls team title, while New Castle claimed the boys title.
Girls volleyball
Leechburg 3, Riverview 2 — Brenna Callahan recorded 17 kills, seven digs and two aces to help Leechburg (11-3, 9-3) top Riverview (6-6) in a Section 4-A match. Bev Stearman had five kills and three blocks and Ashley Grine finished with four kills and three aces for the Blue Devils.
Freeport 3, Burrell 0 — Isabella Russo had nine kills and three blocks to help Class AA No. 1 Freeport (11-2, 10-0) secure its 15 th consecutive section championship with a Section 5 win over Burrell (6-5, 5-5). Lauren Lampus added nine kills and four aces and Maddie Clark had 18 assists. Reghan Kennedy had 15 digs and Anna Novak recorded six kills for Burrell.
Deer Lakes 3, Apollo-Ridge 0 — Lydia Fink recorded four kills, 11 service points and seven aces in the Lancers’ Section 5-AA win over Apollo-Ridge. Chrissy Saldimarco recorded 14 service points and four aces, and Alexis Sutch added five blocks for Deer Lakes (8-5, 8-3).
Knoch 3, Ambridge 0 — Kenzie Kerkan recorded 14 service points and 19 digs as Class AAA No. 1 Knoch cruised to a Section 4 win. Skylar Burkett recorded 13 kills and 10 service points, Hannah Rowe added 10 kills and Kennedy Christy recorded nine kills for Knoch (15-0, 12-0).
