High school roundup for Oct. 11, 2023: Upper St. Clair tops Peters Township in battle for 1st place

Sierra Dupre had a goal and an assist to lead Upper St. Clair to a 2-0 victory over Peters Township (13-1-2, 11-1-1) in a matchup of the top two teams in Section 2-4A girls soccer Wednesday. Maeryn Mannix also scored and Cam Friday recorded the shutout for the Panthers.

The win gives Upper St. Clair a half-game lead in the race for the section title. The Panthers (14-1, 12-1) close out their section schedule at Norwin on Monday. Peters Township (13-1-1, 11-1-1) finishes at home Monday against Hempfield.

Avonworth 7, Ambridge 0 – Fiona Mahan had a hat trick, Gianna Babusci added a pair of goals and Minah Syam and Caroline Sweeney also scored to lead Avonworth (12-1-2, 10-1) past Ambridge (3-11, 2-10) in Section 1-2A. Elena Zimmerman recorded the shutout.

Beaver 2, Quaker Valley 0 – Ana Avdellas and Marina Hahn had a goal and an assist apiece to lead Beaver (8-4-1, 6-4-1) past Quaker Valley (9-4-1, 6-4-1) in a Section 1-2A win.

Belle Vernon 5, Uniontown 0 – Grace West had a goal and two assists and Ava Scalise had two assists for Belle Vernon (7-8-1, 6-6-1) in a Section 2-3A win over Uniontown (4-11, 1-10). Kelsey Roskovich, Abby Russell, Chessa Mertz and Payton Walsh also scored for the Leopards.

Bethel Park 2, Canon McMillan 0 – Artemis Conaboy and Callee DalBon scored to lead Bethel Park (8-6-1, 7-6) to a Section 2-4A win over Canon McMillan (7-6-2, 7-4-2).

Butler 1, Fox Chapel 1 – Madison Rose scored for Butler (9-6-1, 7-5-1) in a Section 1-4A draw with Fox Chapel (9-4-2, 7-4-2).

Chartiers-Houston 3, Bentworth 1 – Amelia Brose had a pair of goals and Ava Capozzoli also scored to lead Chartiers-Houston (12-4, 9-3) to a Section 2-A win. Cassidy Sicchitano scored for Bentworth (7-7-1, 4-6-1).

Deer Lakes 14, Valley 0 – Claire Cacurak and Bryanna Simonetti each had a hat trick and Payton Yeager added two goals for Deer Lakes (8-6-2, 5-4) in a Section 2-2A win over Valley (1-10-1, 0-9).

Freeport 1, Knoch 0 – Camryn Woods scored the winning goal to lead Freeport past Knoch (8-5-2, 5-3-1) in Section 2-2A, clinching the section championship for the Yellowjackets (11-1-1, 8-1-1). Alyssa Alcorn recorded the shutout.

Latrobe 5, Penn-Trafford 0 – Annalyse Bauer and Robin Reilly had two goals apiece and Regan Reilly also scored to lead Latrobe (11-2, 9-2) past Penn-Trafford (11-5, 6-5) in a Section 3-3A win. Corinne Brunetto recorded the shutout.

Ligonier Valley 4, East Allegheny 0 – Ella Pierce scored two goals and Sophia Carns and Jorja Vaniel added a goal apiece for Ligonier Valley (1-15, 1-9) in a Section 3-2A win over East Allegheny (2-10, 1-9).

Mars 9, Kiski Area 0 – Addi Girdwood had a goal and three assists and Jenna Caringola and Bre Goerl each added a goal and an assist for Mars (13-0, 11-0) in a Section 1-3A win over Kiski Area (7-8-2, 5-4-2). Kate McEnroe, Lily Goodworth and Madi Hickinbottom combined on the shutout. Kayleigh Clark, Ainsley Ray, Brynn Ramsey, Lily Wolf, Maeve O’Leary and Cori Sprauge also scored.

Mt. Lebanon 1, Norwin 0 – Tessa Peer scored the decisive goal as Mt. Lebanon (9-6-2, 7-5-2) got past Norwin (3-12, 3-9) in Section 1-4A.

Mt. Pleasant 6, Southmoreland 0 – Maggie Piper had a hat trick and Laurel Rummel recorded the shutout as Mt. Pleasant (13-2, 9-0) blanked Southmoreland (9-4, 8-2) in a matchup of the top two teams in Section 3-2A. Morgan Gesinski had two goals and Maddie Barrick also scored.

North Allegheny 8, Allderdice 0 – Abigail Stager, Gracie Strzempek and Jadyn Coy scored two goals apiece to lead North Allegheny (16-0, 13-0) past Allderdice (4-10, 3-10) in Section 1-4A.

North Catholic 8, Central Valley 0 – Simone Sharpless collected three goals and two assists to lead North Catholic (12-2, 10-1) past Central Valley (4-11-1, 4-7) in Section 1-2A. Kenzie DeBlassio and Lily Karsman each had a goal and an assist and Maria Pasquinelli, Kathleen Virostek and Peedy Mealie also scored. Rylee Kumer, Brooke Lehman and Sami Smallwood combined on the shutout.

Pine-Richland 4, North Hills 0 – Molly Baker, Rylee Ulanowicz, Abby Satina and Lily DeJesus scored for Pine-Richland (5-9, 5-7) in a Section 1-4A win over North Hills (0-15, 0-13).

Seneca Valley 10, Shaler 0 – Ayla Ward scored four goals and Kailee George and Lexi Shattahi added two goals apiece as Seneca Valley (12-1-1, 10-1-1) beat Shaler (6-9, 3-9) in Section 1-4A. Karly Majeski and Bella Gianfrancesco also scored.

Seton LaSalle 10, Serra Catholic 1 – Catie Kozel had a hat trick and Sydney Towers and Sydney Morgan added two goals apiece for Seton LaSalle (8-7, 5-6) in a Section 1-A win over Serra Catholic (4-8-1, 3-8-1). Regan Mazur, Angelina McGrath and Brynlee Robinson also scored for the Rebels.

South Park 5, Keystone Oaks 0 – Ella Voyten scored two goals and Brooke Paylo, Alicia Riberich and Mady Serechin added a goal apiece to lead South Park (12-3, 10-0) to a Section 4-2A win over Keystone Oaks (9-6-1, 5-4-1).

Springdale 8, Jeannette 0 – Briana Ross had two goals and two assists to lead Springdale (11-1, 9-1) past Jeannette (1-12-1, 0-11) in Section 1-A. Makenna Haas had a goal and an assist and Molly Hurley, Addalynn Richards, Kai Williams and Ariana Caltagarone also scored.

Woodland Hills 1, Yough 0 – Annabel Johnson scored the winning goal, assisted by Emma Reyes, and Izzy Wilson preserved the shutout as Woodland Hills (7-6, 6-4) defeated Yough (5-13, 4-6) in Section 3-2A.

Boys soccer

Carlynton 8, Brentwood 0 – Connor Hart had a hat trick and Hamza Alezzo added two goals for Carlynton (9-6, 6-4) in a Section 4-A win over Brentwood (2-11, 1-9). Wilson Choate, Mateo Carrasco and Jermy Garcia-Criollo also scored for the Cougars.

North Catholic 2, Indiana 0 – Gabe Nonino and Justin Garvey scored and Drew Schedlbauer recorded the shutout as North Catholic (8-6, 7-3) beat Indiana (4-10-1, 4-7) in Section 1-3A.

Field hockey

Peters Township 4, Norwin 0 – Isabella Elm, Ella Liebscher, Makayla Ferris and Brooklyn Grau scored for Peters Township in a Section 3A win.

Girls volleyball

Knoch 3, Ambridge 0 – Sabrina Schlott had seven kills for Knoch in a Section 4-3A over Ambridge.

Laurel Highlands 3, Elizabeth Forward 2 – Alexandra Mattey had 13 kills and 17 digs and Ayrianna Sumpter added nine kills and two blocks for Laurel Highlands in a Section 3-3A win. Sara Reed had 26 assists and nine digs and Jayna Fabery recorded 13 digs and three kills.

Mapletown 3, Jefferson-Morgan 0 – Miranda Wise had nine kills and Treslee Weston had eight kills for Mapletown in a Section 2-A win over Jefferson-Morgan. Bailey Rafferty had 24 assists and eight aces and Rowen Eisminger had six kills and six digs for the Maples.

Girls tennis

Class 3A – Cami Fisher, Lily Sierka and Katie Peterson swept the singles matches as top-seeded Bethel Park moved into the WPIAL semifinals with a 4-1 victory over No. 9 Upper St. Clair. Emma Smith and Mackenzie Smock also won at No. 1 doubles for the Black Hawks. The team of Anna Engelman and Hannah Del won for Upper St. Clair.

Bethel Park will meet No. 4 Shady Side Academy in Friday’s semifinals. The Bulldogs swept No. 5 Fox Chapel, 5-0.

In the other semifinal, No. 2 North Allegheny will face No. 3 Mt. Lebanon. The Tigers beat No. 7 Pine-Richland, 4-1, and the Blue Devils blanked No. 6 Franklin Regional, 5-0.
